An Investigation Of The Potential Mobility Of Gold Ions In Core/Shell Silver Bromide Emulsions, Thomas Scarsella
An Investigation Of The Potential Mobility Of Gold Ions In Core/Shell Silver Bromide Emulsions, Thomas Scarsella
Theses
The degree to which non-localized gold ions migrate to the surface from the core of a silver bromide core/shell octahedral emulsion in the absence of sulfur sensitization is investigated. An octahedral core emulsion is precipitated in an oxidized gelatin environment, sensitized with gold, and covered with an additional layer of silver bromide. It was postulated that the migration of gold might be detected by a significant increase in the surface speed of the emulsion due to the catalytic enhancement of latent image formation typified by gold, and an increase in the tendency of the system to form developable sites on …
Colorimetric Tolerances Of Digital Images, Mike Stokes
Colorimetric Tolerances Of Digital Images, Mike Stokes
Theses
An environment to derive colorimetric tolerances of images was established and an experiment using this new environment was performed. This environment allows for images to be digitally captured, colorimetrically manipulated, displayed, observed, and statistically evaluated. The visual experiment measured perceptibility and acceptability colorimetric tolerances for images using paired comparison techniques. Thirty-two observers judged six typical photographic scenes displayed on a high resolution color monitor. These scenes were manipulated using ten linear and nonlinear functions in the CIELAB dimensions of lightness, chroma, and hue angle. The tolerances were determined using probit analysis. It was found that scene content did not significantly …

A Parameterized Cmos Standard Cell Library And A Full 8-Bit Grey Scale Morphological Array Processor, Lawrence H. Rubin
Theses
The creation of a parameterized, full custom CMOS VLSI design library is discussed. This library consists of a schematic component library that is integrated with both logic and circuit level simulators, as well as a corresponding layout cell library that is integrated with automatic place-and-route tools as well as several layout verification tools. The library enabled the design and implementation of a Morphological Array Processor (MAP). This VLSI chip fully implements the morphological operations of erosion and dilation using a 7x7 matrix. It will operate on a 512x512 image in real time (60 images per second). The chip is designed …

Thermal Stresses In Closed Spherical Shells, Frank W. Keene
Thermal Stresses In Closed Spherical Shells, Frank W. Keene
Theses
The purpose of this work is to discuss thermal stresses in closed spherical shells. This effort is further limited to linear thermoelastic stresses in "thin" shells. The basic concepts associated with three-dimensional continuum mechanics are presented in both direct and general tensor notation. The three-dimensional equations are reduced to the two-dimensional equations of shells under going finite displacements. These are subsequently reduced to those pertaining to spherical shells. A review of the recent literature associated with thermal stresses in spherical shells is included. An appendix is provided which reviews some of the basic elements of general tensors.

Substitution Of The Statistical Range For The Variance In Two Local Noise Smoothing Algorithms, Marc R. Lapointe
Substitution Of The Statistical Range For The Variance In Two Local Noise Smoothing Algorithms, Marc R. Lapointe
Theses
The statistical range was substituted for the variance in local noise smoothing algorithms proposed by Tomita and Tsuji, and by Nagao and Matsuyama in order to reduce computer processing time. Images of low, medium, and high information content were corrupted by two levels of combined additive and multiplicative noise and were processed by the original and modified algorithms for both the uncorrelated and correlated noise cases. A subjective paired comparison was performed on the resulting images based on four evaluation criteria, and a normalization of the data between observers as well as hypothesis testing were carried out. Under the conditions …
Adaption And Application Of Morphological Pseudoconvolutions To Scanning Tunneling And Atomic Force Microscopy, Andrew D. Weisman
Adaption And Application Of Morphological Pseudoconvolutions To Scanning Tunneling And Atomic Force Microscopy, Andrew D. Weisman
Theses
A recently developed class of digital filters known as morphological pseudoconvolutions are adapted and applied to Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) images. These filters are shown to outperform, both visually and in the mean square error sense, previously introduced Wiener filtering techniques. The filters are compared on typical STM/AFM images, using both modeled and actual data. The technique is general, and is shown to perform very well on many types of STM and AFM images.
Generating Just Temperament With Ideal Rate Multiplication, Andrew C. Moore
Generating Just Temperament With Ideal Rate Multiplication, Andrew C. Moore
Theses
I have developed a new rate multiplication method. I call it ideal because the quality of the frequency approximation that it makes is maximized, and it extends the range of its frequency scaling factor to all the rational numbers between zero and one. In addition, each input control code produces a unique output frequency. The input code is necessarily not straight binary, so the circuit is not pin compatible with other rate multipliers. I designed the ideal rate multiplier as a method for easily producing just tempered musical intervals. Even a three bit ideal rate multiplier produces many recognizable musical …
Passionate Hours, Douglas E. Taylor
Passionate Hours, Douglas E. Taylor
Theses
This is the written document to accompany the thesis project Passionate Hours (ill. 11). The project consists of five paintings arranged into a U-shaped configuration with one large panel in the center and two smaller panels on each side. The paintings are predominantly in primary colors and depict scenes from the Passion of Christ interspersed with scenes from the Old Testament. The panels present a nightmarish vision due to the expressive style with which I painted the figures. In the following pages, I will explain the meaning of the paintings, the theology behind the them, and the process of their …

A second hypothesis was that students who were developmentally at higher levels would be able to achieve better on weekly spelIing tests.
Procedures
In this study the spelling achievement of thirty-six first graders …
Simulation Study Of Signal Coupling For Monolithic Gaas 8-12 Micron Direct Injection Mqw Image Sensor, Lei Zhang
Theses
The simulation of signal coupling for a single pixel of a monolithic 8-12 micron GaAs/A1GaAs direct injection MQW infrared image sensor with 100% fill factor has been performed by using PISCES-IIB and PSPICE simulators. A vertical structure with the readout circuit built on the back of MQW was adopted for simulations. Both the static and transient characteristics were analyzed by simulation. The simulation was used to verify the doping profiles and device parameters for the n-GaAs MESFETs used in the read-out circuit.
The simulation result is as follow:
(1) A 900A thick p-GaAs (p=1016/cm3) substrate for GaAs MESFETs …
A Comparative Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Zero-Order, First-Order And Monod Kinetic Models In Representing Raw Aerobic Biodegradation Data, Andrew I. Bakun
A Comparative Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Zero-Order, First-Order And Monod Kinetic Models In Representing Raw Aerobic Biodegradation Data, Andrew I. Bakun
Theses
A total of 148 raw aerobic biodegradation data sets from batch and continuous stirred-tank reactors were extracted from the open literature and previous NJIT MS theses. Kinetic analysis of each of these data sets was performed with respect to the following commonly used empirical models: (1) zero-order, (2) first-order, and (3) Monod. Two constant-biomass versions of each model were evaluated; one in which So (i.e., the boundary condition for substrate concentration at time equal to zero) was assumed to be equal to the measured value of the initial substrate concentration and the other in which So was treated as a …

Computerized Machine Knitting And Felted-Knits, Marie Scheponick
Computerized Machine Knitting And Felted-Knits, Marie Scheponick
Theses
Continuously being drawn to the limitless variety of textures available in fabrics, especially knits, was a motivating factor and inspiration to begin this study. From the narrowest perspective of the thesis conception a goal was to create a fabric unique to the marketplace. There were three major qualities, among others, that were sought. It was to possess different layers of texture, display the sensitivity the designer had for the utilized fibers, and potential for mass production after some modifications. Over months of research, which preceded an official beginning to thesis work, there was a continuous flow of tiny samples from …
Color Variation Of The Gray Balance Target As Related To Color Misregistration In Multi-Angle Halftone Color Printing, Tuo Wu
Theses
This study was to investigate how color variation of a gray balance target was related to color misregistration in the multi-angle halftone color printing process. The dot overlap ping patterns of a gray balance target with 25%, 50% and 75% screen period off-register conditions were simulated on computer; the Neugebauer fractional areas from the ran domly selected thirty-one unit areas were calculated through the application of CAD pro grams and programing. The n-modified Neugebauer equations were then used to predict the colors of the targets and color differences between them. In order to verify the theo retical findings, an experimental …
Image Coding Using Wavelet Transform And Adaptive Block Truncation Coding, Thanit Chaiyaboonthanit
Image Coding Using Wavelet Transform And Adaptive Block Truncation Coding, Thanit Chaiyaboonthanit
Theses
This thesis presents a new image coding using wavelet transform and adaptive block truncation coding. Images are first pre-processed by the wavelet transform and then coded by the adaptive block truncation coding. Algorithms for both monochrome and color images are proposed and experimentally studied. The adaptive block truncation coding is also modified to achieve better performance. For coding monochrome images at the bit-rate region between 0.8 to 1.2 bits/pixel, the performance of the new coding is comparable to the ones of subband codings and other image codings using the wavelet transform; however, the new coding offers less computational load. The …
An Investigation Into The Asymmetric Synthesis Of Imidazolinones Via Reaction Of Chiral Alpha-Amino Acid Esters With Nitrils, Franklin A. Del Vecchio
An Investigation Into The Asymmetric Synthesis Of Imidazolinones Via Reaction Of Chiral Alpha-Amino Acid Esters With Nitrils, Franklin A. Del Vecchio
Theses
The objective of this investigation was to develop a new synthetic method for the asymmetric synthesis of imidazolinones. This method involved an addition-cyclization reaction of an optically pure alpha-amino acid ester and a nitrile. While imidazolinones have been synthesized by other means, this synthetic route has the advantage of producing an enantiomerically pure heterocycle. Furthermore, the wide variety of amino acids and nitriles available could produce an extensive series of imidazolinone derivatives whose potential for therapeutic uses could be explored. The first step in this reaction involved the amino addition of an a-amino acid ester to a nitrile to give …
Visual Determination Of Industrial Color-Difference Tolerances Using Probit Analysis, Gregory Snyder
Visual Determination Of Industrial Color-Difference Tolerances Using Probit Analysis, Gregory Snyder
Theses
A perceptibility study was conducted to visually determine the median tolerance values of 45 color-difference vectors in CIELAB color space using surface mode viewing of paint samples. Nine different color centers, each compris ing five color vectors, were employed to collect a superthreshold dataset. Fifty color-normal observers made quantal judgements under simulated Dg^ illuminant regarding the magnitude of color-difference pairs based on comparisons to a near-neutral color-difference anchor pair. Probit analysis was applied to the response frequencies for each vector to estimate the parameters of the distribution and the median tolerance values. Results indicated the probit adequately models the response …
Effect Of Dietary Lipids On Rat Alveolar Macrophage Function, Sangeeta R. Mehta
Effect Of Dietary Lipids On Rat Alveolar Macrophage Function, Sangeeta R. Mehta
Theses
An in vitro assay has been developed to measure bacterial uptake by rat alveolar macrophages. The assay is used to study the effect of a diet rich in high omega-6 linoleic acid on the phagocytic response of the macrophages obtained from young and old rats. Within the range of diets studied, no significant difference (p<0.05) is observed in the phagocytic capability of macrophages from young rats. Significant difference is observed between diet groups for the old rats (p<0.05), with the group on a fat-rich diet showing suppressed phagocytic response. Significant difference is also found between age groups for the same diet (p<0.05), older animals showing suppressed response.

Development Of A Classification And Coding System For Computer-Aided Process Planning, Shilpan K. Patel
Development Of A Classification And Coding System For Computer-Aided Process Planning, Shilpan K. Patel
Theses
The chore of this work was to develop a Group Technology Classification Code which can represent the full gamut of simple, rotational parts. The automated coding plan is developed to alleviate the endeavor of the process planner to plan the tasks related to the manufacturing of a specific part. The 15 digits were devised from the Japanese KK-3 Classification and Coding system. The KK-3 System contains 21 digits. Our aim is to minimize the code length, and concurrently to eliminate the redundancies. As a result, a 15 digit G.T. Code is created. The proposed plan also generates the operation logic …
Task Scheduling For Fms Based On Genetic Algorithm, Hung-Yuan Li
Task Scheduling For Fms Based On Genetic Algorithm, Hung-Yuan Li
Theses
A Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) consisting of p automated guided vehicles (AGV's), m workstations and n tasks is studied. The main problem investigated in this thesis is to find an optimal or suboptimal task scheduling for p AGV's among m workstations to complete n tasks.
An efficient approach based on genetic algorithms has been designed and implemented to solve the problem of task scheduling for a FMS. Near-optimal, or even optimal, task scheduling is accomplished by genetic algorithms. Simulation results on the algorithm are also discussed.
