Global Housekeepers, Mary Arp May 1993

Global Housekeepers, Mary Arp

Theses

It all began with a small, clipped image from a 1940' s Good Housekeeping magazine. There she was: a two inch tall housewife, prim in both her apron and hair style. Her arms were extended: one for balance and one with a cloth for cleaning. I took this "cleaning woman" image to Kinko ' s , the 24 -hour copy center where I spend too much time. There, I made successive photocopies and enlargements until I had a stack of grainy, obviously mechanically reproduced "drawings". Back in the studio, with a 4B charcoal pencil and paper, I vigorously drew backgrounds …

Design Of A Hardware Efficient Key Generation Algorithm With A Vhdl Implementation, James A. Goeke May 1993

Design Of A Hardware Efficient Key Generation Algorithm With A Vhdl Implementation, James A. Goeke

Theses

The design and implementation of a key-generation algorithm will be discussed. The steps in the procedure consist of choosing a baseline algorithm for comparison, designing a new algorithm, testing and comparing the algorithms using C language programs, and then implementing the new algorithm using VHDL. The final result of testing the algorithm implemented in VHDL will be compared to the original results obtained from the C program implementing the new algorithm. C language programs of the chosen algorithms will be developed to verify their similarity and functionality. The results will be used to decide if the new algorithm selected for …

Optical Signal Processing And Real World Applications, Patrick Naulleau May 1993

Optical Signal Processing And Real World Applications, Patrick Naulleau

Theses

It is common to want to correct signals that have been corrupted by wideband dispersion. If the dispersion is caused by a system whose transfer function has a flat amplitude function and a nonlinear phase function, such as is the case with a ltig periodic antenna, the signal can be corrected via a matched filter. In this paper various optical implementations of the matched filter, including one and two dimensional systems, are investigated. The 2D Fourier Filter, along with several simplifications, demonstrating its power, are simulated. The optical implementations of these systems are also discussed. The problem of phase detection …

An Investigation On Bubble Departure In Subcooled Flow Boiling, Brian J. Stumm May 1993

An Investigation On Bubble Departure In Subcooled Flow Boiling, Brian J. Stumm

Theses

A summary of the major theoretical models available for departure diameter prediction in sub-cooled flow boiling is presented. A new model is developed to predict the forces acting on a bubble at the instance of departure by introducing a control volume approach for the front and the rear halves of the bubble. The predictions from the model are compared with experimental data obtained in the Thermal Analysis Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Rochester Institute of Technology. Two competing mechanisms are identified as being responsible for bubble departure. To obtain clear evidence of the dominate mechanism, high speed photography …

An Uncertainty Analysis Of A Color Tolerance Database, Mitchell Balonon-Rosen Apr 1993

An Uncertainty Analysis Of A Color Tolerance Database, Mitchell Balonon-Rosen

Theses

A database designed to develop, evaluate and compare color-difference formulae, particularly for use within the suprathreshold industrial-sized range, so named for its importance in many commercial transactions, has been under development at the Munsell Color Science Laboratory. The database consists of two independent data sets, previously published. The sets and the experimental conditions under which they were derived were analyzed to determine the appropriateness of pooling the data. The earlier of the two studies had associated statistics which indicated a population of highly precise observers. The latter study's population displayed a significantly greater level of uncertainty. The current work concluded …

Perkins Green Iii: Proposed Married And Graduate Student Housing, Chou-Tein Lin Apr 1993

Perkins Green Iii: Proposed Married And Graduate Student Housing, Chou-Tein Lin

Theses

When I first came to Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) to study in the graduate program, I settled in an apartment supported by the school, because I was a new-comer and knew nothing about the surroundings. Racquet Club, a housing complex five minutes from school, is a 307-unit-townhouse-apartment, student housing area with three tennis courts and one large grass slope as its open space. I was very satisfied by this beautiful scene and thought it would be a good place to live and study. Later, however, I found sometimes, especially on weekends, there was too much noise from parties taking …

A Study Of The Use Of A Manual In The Training Of Operators Of Harris Pagination Systems, Mark Mulik

Theses

This thesis focuses on the effectiveness of a selfguided training manual for use by beginners of the Harris Page Layout System. The problem was to prove that this manual, titled A Beginner' s Guide to Harris Pagination Systems and written in conjunction with this study, is an effective instructional tool. Two groups of beginning users of the Harris Page Layout System were used for testing the effectiveness of the manual. The members of the control group were taught the system by an instructor, while the members of the experimental group were taught the system by the aforementioned training manual. Both …

The Effect Of Flashing In Reducing The Tonal Range Of A Transparency For Photomechanical Reproduction, Bader N. Al-Hajji Apr 1993

The Effect Of Flashing In Reducing The Tonal Range Of A Transparency For Photomechanical Reproduction, Bader N. Al-Hajji

Theses

Photographic processing and lithographic printing reproduction are two different processes. In photography, the transparency reproduces the original scene in continuous tone. Whereas, in lithographic printing, the reproduction is a result of an all-or-nothing process. A transparency may have a tonal range that exceeds the range that can be reproduced in lithographic printing. So tone compression is performed on transparencies that exceed the tonal range for printing. Avoiding tone compression during lithographic production results in considerable savings in cost and time. One of the methods to reduce tonal range is for the photographer to understand the relationship between emulsion flashing and …

Conversion Of Solid Ink Density And Dot Gain Specifications Into Colorimetric Specifications, Theera Tangvichachan Apr 1993

Conversion Of Solid Ink Density And Dot Gain Specifications Into Colorimetric Specifications, Theera Tangvichachan

Theses

With the advent of the spectrophotometer as an alternative to the densitometer for pressroom applications, it becomes desirable to use a single three-color overprint halftone gray patch for controlling color on the press. As a consequence, the need for new specifications in colorimetric units, rather than SID and dot gain units, arises. The purpose of this study was to conduct a mathematical conversion of the traditional SID and dot gain specifications into the colorimetric specifications, in terms of the CIELAB coordinates. The FIPP dot gain and SID specifications were applied to the gray patch contained in the Gretag CMS3 color …

A Laboratory Study Of Ink Splitting Forces At Different Film Thicknesses And An Investigation Of The Stefan Equation, Tso-Pei Hsieh Apr 1993

A Laboratory Study Of Ink Splitting Forces At Different Film Thicknesses And An Investigation Of The Stefan Equation, Tso-Pei Hsieh

Theses

Ink tack is a term used by printers to describe the force required to split an ink film. Such film splitting is influenced by rheological and adhesive properties as well as the internal cohesion of ink. Furthermore, the concept of ink tack in printing is associated with the forces or energy developed in the splitting of ink film at the exit of a printing nip. Stefan studied the forces required to split a thin film. He found that the force required to split a thin film is inversely proportional to the cube of the thickness of that film. This association …

The Effects Of Fluctuations In Solid Ink Density On Color Variation For Conventional And Grey Component Replacement Separations When Printing Process Color On Newsprint, Eric Matthew Pawlow Apr 1993

The Effects Of Fluctuations In Solid Ink Density On Color Variation For Conventional And Grey Component Replacement Separations When Printing Process Color On Newsprint, Eric Matthew Pawlow

Theses

A color separation technique known as Gray Component Replacement, or GCR has been an option available to high-end drum scanner operators for the past eight years. Recently, GCR has been made available by lower-end color system vendors as well. GCR consists of removing the least predominant process color ink in a unit area, reducing the remaining colored inks by the same amount and replacing the "gray component" of the color with black ink. One of the reported benefits of the GCR technique is that more consistency can be realized during a pressrun. If this is in fact true, the first …

Monolithic Silicon Opto-Electro-Mechanical Light Modulator, Ching-Horng Wu Mar 1993

Monolithic Silicon Opto-Electro-Mechanical Light Modulator, Ching-Horng Wu

Theses

A Fabry-Perot light beam modulator of the reflection-type has been designed with process and performance parameters optimized. This design takes advantage of the economies of surface micromaching using silicon substrates and selected thin films. High performance with a low drive voltage are achieved using electrostatic actuation of a thin polysilicon diaphragm. The diaphragm is a novel corrugated structure which has maximum compliance and maintains planarity during actuation. In addition, the corrugationsuspension used provides an improved linearity of amplitude modulation response as a function of the actuation voltage.

A preliminary version of this device has been fabricated through a contract foundry …

Influence Of Ink Sequence On Color's Hue And Saturation In Four Color Halftone Screen Printing, Aristotelis Platon Bougàs Mar 1993

Influence Of Ink Sequence On Color's Hue And Saturation In Four Color Halftone Screen Printing, Aristotelis Platon Bougàs

Theses

The screen printing process has been the least understood and studied versus other imaging methods in the graphic arts industry. As equipment configurations improve and a continuous technological development and need for high quality output persists, this fascinating process becomes increasingly popular in several end-use applications. Such as in packaging, labeling, durable graphic films printing and even short run large format halftone graphics. There is a serious need for further deep scientific analysis of the process and its variables. One of the poorly investigated sides of the four color screen printing is the effect that ink placement has to the …

Business Forms Industry's Response To Edi And Electronic Substitutes, Michael J. Hill

Theses

This project has two primary objectives. Both objectives will be achieved through research of current data and the creation, distribution and analysis of a business forms industry survey. The first objective was to draw attention to the growing demand for electronic substitutes for traditional printed business forms, and educate the business forms industry about the biggest threat and opportunity of these technologies, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). This was accomplished by outlining the technology and processes of EDI and describing the various benefits of EDI over traditional printed business forms systems. Such educational descriptions and analysis were necessary due to the …

Simulation Of A Morphological Image Processor Using Vhdl - Part I: Mathematical Components, Wei-Chun Chen Feb 1993

Simulation Of A Morphological Image Processor Using Vhdl - Part I: Mathematical Components, Wei-Chun Chen

Theses

Very high speed integrated circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) is utilized in this project to model a Morphological Image Processor (MIP) Array. Both behavioral and structural models have been established at the system level, and the simulation results from both models are consistent with each other. The successful implementation of the models accomplishes our original goal to document the MIP with VHDL. It is observed from the project that VHDL is a powerful language. It is flexible since it can be used to model any level of a system independent of the technology.

Computer Aided Manufacturing For Production Environment, Biren K. Parikh Jan 1993

Computer Aided Manufacturing For Production Environment, Biren K. Parikh

Theses

Investments in new technology like Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) increased in the past few years because of the foreign competition in the world market as well as on the home ground. Improper investment in CAM and CIM resulted in the "Islands of Automation" instead of an integrated system. These "Islands of Automation" have created new problems for production planning and factory communication.

The objective of the thesis is to develop the methodology to selection and implementation of the CAM system in the production environment. It is to be noted that a CAM system is part of the overall CIM implementation, …

Entrance Effects For Short Catalytic Combustion Monoliths, Dong Dai Jan 1993

Entrance Effects For Short Catalytic Combustion Monoliths, Dong Dai

Theses

Catalytic combustion/incineration is becoming increasingly important in modern industrial processes. This thesis work investigates the importance of heat and mass transfer entrance effects in short catalytic combustion monoliths, and includes these effects in an engineering model. Consideration is limited to laminar-flow heat and mass transfer in a circular tube, in which Prandtl number is close to unity, as is the case for air. Thermal, mass and velocity boundary layer growths are considered with inlet conditions assumed uniform at a monolith bed entrance. Conservation equations are solved assuming laminar, steady-state flow, with constant wall temperature, and negligible axial diffusion of heat …

A Planning Model For Intermodal Auto-Rail Transportation Assignment, Daniel Disario Jan 1993

A Planning Model For Intermodal Auto-Rail Transportation Assignment, Daniel Disario

Theses

This thesis presents a planning model for assigning trips in a corridor served by highways and commuter rail. The underlying assumption is that commuters will choose a mode (or a combination of modes) connecting the origin and destination in a way that will either minimize their individual travel times and costs (the user equilibrium principle) or minimize total system travel time and cost (system optimal principle). The model is structured as a mathematical program with a non-linear objective function and linear constraints.

The model was applied to a case study of the Raritan Valley Corridor located in Northern New Jersey. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Lpcvd Boron Nitride Films For X-Ray Lithography, Wen-Pin Kuo Jan 1993

Synthesis And Characterization Of Lpcvd Boron Nitride Films For X-Ray Lithography, Wen-Pin Kuo

Theses

Boron nitride thin films were deposited on silicon and fused quartz substrates using ammonia and the liquid precursor borane-triethylamine complex (TEAB) by low pressure chemical vapor deposition over a temperature range of 300-850°C, a pressure range of 0.21-0.6 torr, and an ammonia flow rate range of 0-740 sccm. An increased in the nitrogen content in the film due to the addition of ammonia flow resulted in a pronounced improvement in the optical transmission, an increase in the film uniformity and a decrease in the depletion effect. IR spectra of the films showed an asymmetrical wide band centered around 1400 cm …

Reverse Engineering : An Evaluation Of Contact Technology And Application In Manufacturing Systems, Shailesh V. Jadhav Jan 1993

Reverse Engineering : An Evaluation Of Contact Technology And Application In Manufacturing Systems, Shailesh V. Jadhav

Theses

There are many instances where one-of-a-kind parts, such as prototypes or custom-built parts, need to be reproduced. When a Computer Aided Design (CAD) of an existing part is not available, reverse engineering is involved in recreation of such part. Currently, geometric measurements from the surface of a prototype are extracted manually and sent to a CAD system. It is typically time consuming, tedious, and potentially a source of error. This study outlines a methodology, for the development of a CAD model, rapid prototype, and subsequently manufacturing of the part. The method developed uses a contact technique to extract 2-D or …

Modal Control Of Flexible Beam Using Smart Mateirals, Sujata Mallepalle Jan 1993

Modal Control Of Flexible Beam Using Smart Mateirals, Sujata Mallepalle

Theses

In this work, the dynamics and control aspects of a vibrating flexible beam using modal analysis are studied. To damp the vibrations of the system, the vibrations of each mode has to he controlled, which can he done if we know the individual mode shape. and the resonance frequency. These quantities can be derived mathematically or measured experimentally with a spectrum analyzer. Individual modal velocities can be computed by integration of the product of beam velocity and the mode shape, over the interval of beam length. The integration is carried out using numerical methods. The necessary discrete ordinates are obtained …

Performance Analysis Of Pyramid Mapping Algorithms For The Hypercube, Jing-Chiou Liou Jan 1993

Performance Analysis Of Pyramid Mapping Algorithms For The Hypercube, Jing-Chiou Liou

Theses

Comparative performance analysis of algorithms that map pyramids and multilevel structures onto the hypercube are presented. The pyramid structure is appropriate for low-level and intermediate-level computer vision algorithms. It is not only efficient for the support of both local and global operations but also capable of supporting the implementation of multilevel solvers. Nevertheless, pyramids lack the capability of efficient implementation of the majority of scientific algorithms and their cost may become unacceptably high. On a different horizon, hypercube machines have widely been used in the field of parallel computing due to their small diameter, high degree of fault tolerance, and …
