The world of electronic publishing changes quickly, and CD-ROM is the latest technology. Many electronic publishers are getting involved in what is called CD-ROM publishing (also called Optical publishing). CD-ROM means Compact-Disc Read Only Memory. CD-ROM publishing changes the way information is presented, searched, retrieved, and distributed. Electronic publishing takes on a whole new identity with CD-ROMs. The computer screen now replaces hard copy as the viewing medium. This is why CD-ROMs are called the "new CD-ROMs allow the user to deal with dynamic and "moving" images in lieu of static ones. The technology promotes the fact that CD-ROM applications …

Software programs have brought about significant changes in computer technology. There once was a time when most software programs were only capable of handling very few typo graphic styles and design applications. Graphic importation wasn't even heard of. But today, there are numerous software programs that are capable of handling unlimited design styles, such color, text wrapping, rotation, and even graphic importation and exportation. Ami Pro is one of those software programs. Ami Pro is a powerful and "user-friendly" software program that was developed by the Lotus Development Corporation for MS DOS Windows. It is primarily used to serve the …

A Gender Specific Interactive Project To Promote Bilingual Literacy In American Sign Language And Written English, Catherine Stotts

Theses

What do young adults (age 12-18) think entertainment consists of? Is it movies, television, computer games, video tapes, multi-media products? What about books, are books considered entertainment? Because interactive multi-media can incorporate text, sound, music, animation, Quicktime movies and allows user interaction, books have become a neglected part of the entertainment market. Even though multi-media can be highly interactive, reading books is highly interactive too. The readers must use their imagination to construct the many images, sounds, and moods of the book. There is the concern that people really don't know how to read. A vast majority of these multi-media …

Theses

The performance of liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooled digital scientific instrumentation camera incorporating a large format (512 x 512, 2 0.3 mm diagonal) Charge Injection Device (CID) imager which was fabricated by CIDTEC for use in low-light imaging applications is described in this thesis. The LN2 cooled camera outputs 14 -bit digital pixel data which can be read out randomly and non-destructively from individual pixels, multiple sub-arrays, or from the entire imager. CID's have the unique capability to skim accumulated pixel charge and/or non-destructively read pixel information, enabling the system user to monitor events and dynamically adapt application exposure in real-time …

An Investigation Of Amplitude & Frequency Modulated Screening On Dot Gain And Variability, Kelly Laughlin May 1994

An Investigation Of Amplitude & Frequency Modulated Screening On Dot Gain And Variability, Kelly Laughlin

Theses

This study examines the effect of screening on dot gain and variability. Essentially two hypotheses are examined: first that as screen ruling is increased, the level of dot gain is increased; and second that as screen ruling is increased the level of variability is increased. These predictions are also applied to stochastic or frequency modulated screens which are presumed to behave as very screens due to their fine dot structure. A mathematical model referred to as the border zone is proposed to describe the nature of the gain and the variability for each of the screening systems. The hypotheses were …

A Study On The Effects Of Dot Gain, Print Contrast And Tone Reproduction As It Relates To Increased Solid Ink Density On Stochastically Screened Images Versus Conventionally Screened Images, Justine E. Adamcewicz May 1994

A Study On The Effects Of Dot Gain, Print Contrast And Tone Reproduction As It Relates To Increased Solid Ink Density On Stochastically Screened Images Versus Conventionally Screened Images, Justine E. Adamcewicz

Theses

Through the evolution of technology both print and process have become more predictable and reliable. As a result, innovations in the press and plate coating technologies along with imaging software technologies have challenged the way we view print. With lithography being the predominant printing process, printers now have to find ways to differentiate themselves from others especially in the color reproduction arena. For years, traditional halftoning methods have reproduced original continuous tone images with success. Today, however, the once accepted rosette is now being challenged by a new technology that does away with conventional screen rulings and dot patterns. This …

Comparing Color Appearance Models Using Pictorial Images, Taek Gyu Kim

Theses

Eight different color appearance models were tested using pictorial images. A psychophysical paired comparison experiment was performed where 30 color-normal observers judged reference and test images via successive-Ganzfeld haploscopic viewing such that each eye maintained constant chromatic adaptation and inter-ocular interactions were minimized. It was found that models based on von Kries had best performance, specifically CIELAB, HUNT, RLAB, and von Kries.

A High Speed 16-Bit Risc Processor Chip, Wan-Fu Chen May 1994

A High Speed 16-Bit Risc Processor Chip, Wan-Fu Chen

Theses

The goal of this thesis is to design and simulate a high speed 16-bit processor chip by using RISC architecture. The high computing speed is achieved by employing a more effective four-stage pipeline. This processor executes every instruction in one clock cycle, and it won't have any delay of executing instructions when it executes Jump, Condition Jump, Call, and Return instructions. Its computing speed is 4 times faster than the speed of the Berkeley RISC II's for the 8-MHz clock. The design includes the main architectural features of the RISC: the 4-stage pipeline, the thirty-two 8-bit register bank, the 16-bit …

Kinematic Analysis And Synthesis Of Four-Bar Mechanisms For Straight Line Coupler Curves, Arun K. Natesan May 1994

Kinematic Analysis And Synthesis Of Four-Bar Mechanisms For Straight Line Coupler Curves, Arun K. Natesan

Theses

Mechanisms are means of power transmission as well as motion transformers. A fourbar mechanism consists mainly of four planar links connected with four revolute joints. The input is usually given as rotary motion of a link and output can be obtained from the motion of another link or a coupler point. Straight line motion from a four bar linkages has been used in several ways as in a dwell mechanism and as a linkage to vehicle suspension. This paper studies the straight line motion obtained from planar four-bar mechanisms and optimizes the design to produce the maximized straight line portion …

On Issues Of Equalization With The Decorrelation Algorithm : Fast Converging Structures And Finite-Precision, Andrew James Bateman May 1994

On Issues Of Equalization With The Decorrelation Algorithm : Fast Converging Structures And Finite-Precision, Andrew James Bateman

Theses

To increase the rate of convergence of the blind, adaptive, decision feedback equalizer based on the decorrelation criterion, structures have been proposed which dramatically increase the complexity of the equalizer. The complexity of an algorithm has a direct bearing on the cost of implementing the algorithm in either hardware or software. In this thesis, more computationally efficient structures, based on the fast transversal filter and lattice algorithms, are proposed for the decorrelation algorithm which maintain the high rate of convergence of the more complex algorithms. Furthermore, the performance of the decorrelation algorithm in a finite-precision environment will be studied and …

Characterization Of Dc Reactive Sputtered Indium Tin Oxide Thin Films, Philip Infante Apr 1994

Characterization Of Dc Reactive Sputtered Indium Tin Oxide Thin Films, Philip Infante

Theses

Indium tin oxide (ITO), sometimes referred to as tin doped indium oxide, is a widely used transparent conductor due to its ability to offer higher conductance and better etch ability over other transparent conductors. ITO has been utilized as transparent electrodes in liquid crystal displays and heterojunction solar cells, as transparent heat reflecting films, as the sensing medium in gas sensors, and in optoelectronic device applications. In general, these films are characterized by high transparency in the visible spectra, high reflectance in the IR and absorption in the UV regions, and near metallic conductivity. Although the desired characteristics of the …

Characterization Of The Radiometric Performance Of An Ir Scene Projector, Gary Ralph Apr 1994

Characterization Of The Radiometric Performance Of An Ir Scene Projector, Gary Ralph

Theses

A quantitative evaluation of a self-emitting far IR scene simulator is performed. The simulation system is comprised of a white-light source, spatial light modulator, optics, and a visible-to-infrared transducer. The performance was evaluated by measuring the MTFs of the system and sub-components and the thermal contrast. An attempt to correct variations in the radiometric response across the scene is done by modifying pixel values. Additionally, the effect of cooling the infrared transducer on the thermal contrast is investigated. Results are compared to a previous system which used a coherent light source.

Characterization Of Spatial Texture For Use In Segmentation Of Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery, Eleni J. Paliouras

Theses

This study examined the use of textural analysis to assist in the segmentation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. A previous study, which dealt with imagery collected passively by electro-optical systems in the visible and infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, tested a method of identifying optimal subsets of texture features from a large pool of possibilities. Three new features were added to this pool and tested against the others to determine their specific utility in the segmentation of SAR imagery. Their value is demonstrated by consistent appearance in optimal subsets of texture features, and by their contribution of up …

Design, Graphic Arts, And Environment, Sondra Zalewski Mar 1994

Theses

The environment draws great attention today from many people and businesses. Some companies are beginning to play off these concerns in their marketing approach, while others dodge the topic at all turns. While many people feel we have serious environmental problems, others do not. It is a subject with which everyone is, perhaps, too hasty in their judgment. This thesis project encourages behavioral awareness and provides information from a multitude of sources so that a practical, rather than radical, view may develop. Information surrounding issues about the environment appear in many diverse publications. The sources of information, as well as …
