Design And Fabrication Of A Miniature Pressure Sensor Head Using Direct Bonded Ultra-Thin Silicon Wafers, Chad Eugene Statler May 1996

Design And Fabrication Of A Miniature Pressure Sensor Head Using Direct Bonded Ultra-Thin Silicon Wafers, Chad Eugene Statler

Theses

A miniature pressure sensor head is designed and fabricated using an ultra-thin silicon membrane directly bonded to an excimer laser micromachined substrate. The pressure sensor head has its intended implementation as part of an optically interrogated device with sensitivity to pressures ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 MPa. The pressure range design is shown to be easily adjusted by tailoring the thickness of the membrane wafer. The fabrication process features numerous advantages over existing pressure sensor construction technology including a maskless procedure and no chemical etching or mechanical thinning necessary to form the membrane after bonding. An optic lever is constructed …

Simple Fast Vector Quantization Of The Line Spectral Frequencies, Jin Zhou May 1996

Simple Fast Vector Quantization Of The Line Spectral Frequencies, Jin Zhou

Theses

Speech coding has been of interest to communication specialists for years. A number of technologies for describing and transmitting the speech spectral envelope have been studied. Among them, the Vector Quantization (VQ) of Line Spectral Frequencies (LSF) is receiving more attention because of its good rate-distortion performance. Typically, about 30 bits are assigned to code 10-dimensional LSF vectors with a resulting spectral distortion of less than ldB. However, 30-bit full-search VQ is totally impractical in terms of both computational complexity and memory space. Various standard suboptimal, low-complexity VQ techniques have been used for coding the LSF's in the literature. The …

Sub-Micron Pmos Transistor Using Electron Beam Lithography, Mark Klare May 1996

Sub-Micron Pmos Transistor Using Electron Beam Lithography, Mark Klare

Theses

The design, simulation, fabrication and testing of .75um PMOS transistors is studied in this work. The process uses Direct Write Electron Beam Lithography for all lithography steps. The process is matched for the tool set at The Rochester Institute of Technology and their accompanying process hurdles. As of the beginning of this work, there had been no work done on obtaining a sub-micron transistor due to limitations in the optical lithography tools available at The Rochester Institute of Technology. A process flow that is robust, but as efficient as possible is used to obtain a working sub-micron PMOS transistor.

Tashlich - "And You Shall Cast", Rachel Kanter May 1996

Tashlich - "And You Shall Cast", Rachel Kanter

Theses

Art is my means of communication. It is a visual statement of my conscience and soul. Clay is the medium I use, to help me create my statement. I use it as my visual typewriter. It is how I speak without writing, and communicate to people through their eyes. Clay is an extension of my mind and hands. The development of the initial idea, to the actual work of art, happens naturally when I use clay. It enables my ideas to become dimensional realities. The following thesis is a documentation of the process I used, from the preliminary thoughts, to …

Graphical Visualization Of Control System Performance, Jeffrey Marx May 1996

Graphical Visualization Of Control System Performance, Jeffrey Marx

Theses

University courses on control system design have traditionally relied on the root locus approach to predict transient system output. However, the increasing speed of personal computers has made it practical to design control systems by simulating their time and frequency responses. This thesis presents an interactive Matlab program for control system analysis and design. The system is defined in Simulink with a user-specified gain parameter of variable magnitude. The gain parameter is automatically varied by the program within user-specified bounds. Several surface and performance plots are produced which describe system time-domain and frequency-domain performance. The system root locus is also …

Theses

Capturing and reproducing black and white images are common problems for high quality print reproduction. This study compared the monotone reproduction quality of the Kodak Photo CD Master technology to the standard methods currently being employed using high resolution scanners such as the Agfa Horizon Scanner and the Optronics ColorGetter II. The Kodak Photo CD Master and the Optronics ColorGetter II were used to scan the original 35mm black and white film negatives. The negatives selected represent the various tonal ranges encountered by professional photographers. High key and low key images were included in the selection since these are the …

Facsimile Reproductions Of Art With The Use Of A Digital Camera System, Jamisen Gingerelli May 1996

Facsimile Reproductions Of Art With The Use Of A Digital Camera System, Jamisen Gingerelli

Theses

Reproductions of original works of art have played a major role in the existence and growth of the graphic arts over the centuries. The one concept that has not changed over time is the difficulty in reproducing art that is true to the original. Using a high-end scanning system is one known method that is able to achieve high quality reproductions. However, it has several limitations. The purpose of this research was to verify that a digital camera system combined with color separation software can be used as an alternative technique to create facsimile reproductions of art. Five pieces of …

Investigation Into The Capturing, Manipulating, Calibrating And Outputting Of Black And White Images On A Xerox Docutech, Sebastian Schwarz

Theses

It is the purpose of this investigation to determine whether or not the output quality of black and white images on a Xerox Docutech can be enhanced. The Docutech is a black and white digital printing device. In times of a growing demand for on-demand printing and publishing, the Docutech not only has to reproduce text and graphics properly but also has to cope with the increasing task of rendering images. Although there are multiple options to improve the output quality, this project focuses on the impact of image capturing on the output. As a result of this investigation, a …

An Investigation Into The Cost Justification Of Computer-To-Plate Systems, Jessica Murphey May 1996

An Investigation Into The Cost Justification Of Computer-To-Plate Systems, Jessica Murphey

Theses

In the history of technological development, it is usually the case that the technology is available before mankind understands the full potential of its use. Thus it should come as no surprise that CTP (Computer-to Plate) technology is currently waiting for its advantages to be exploited by the graphic arts' market. This was evidenced by the heavy saturation of platesetters presented at DRUPA 1995 (the largest printing trade show in the world), which demonstrated that CTP is no longer a research and development experiment but a marketplace reality and the topic of considerable discussion. Surprisingly, the response of the printing …

Modeling Of The Radiometric Characteristics Of A Simulated Fluorescent Imager, Alexander Granica May 1996

Modeling Of The Radiometric Characteristics Of A Simulated Fluorescent Imager, Alexander Granica

Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether changes in stimulated plant fluorescence could be detected by a remote sensing system. By measuring the changes in fluorescent signal the health status of vegetation can be determined. The plant condition can be assessed by viewing the ratio 690 nm/ 730 nm from the fluorescent spectra at the leaf level. The question is whether the change in fluorescent spectra (change in the ratio) can be seen at a remote location. In order to address this question a theoretical scenario was developed and the expected signal at a remote location was determined …

Physical Attractiveness In Learning Disabled And Non Learning Disabled Fourth And Fifth Graders, Kenneth Gerald Solomon May 1996

Physical Attractiveness In Learning Disabled And Non Learning Disabled Fourth And Fifth Graders, Kenneth Gerald Solomon

Theses

The differences in subjective perceptions of physical attractiveness of learning disabled (LD) and non learning disabled (NLD) children were investigated. Three hundred and seventy-seven fourth and fifth grade students self-rated their appearance using the Body-Esteem Scales (Mendelson, B. K. & White, D.R., 1982). Thirty-six NLD males and females were randomly selected to match the number of LD children in both grades. (An ANOV A was used to calculate the differences in the means of the two groups.) Although the results did not reveal a statistically significant difference between the groups, a difference did occur indicating more negative perception of attractiveness …

The Colorimetric Characterization Of Crt-Based Digital Film Recorders, Helen Hae-Kyung Shin May 1996

The Colorimetric Characterization Of Crt-Based Digital Film Recorders, Helen Hae-Kyung Shin

Theses

Digital film recorders play a key role bridging digital imagery and photographic media. The purpose of this research was to characterize the relationship between digital drive signals controlling the exposure of positive 35mm film and the spectral transmittance of the processed film. First, the Beer-Bouger law was verified relating dye concentration and spectral transmittance. Second, an empirical nonlinear relationship was found between status A densities and dye concentration to facilitate the conversion from integral to analytical density alleviating the need for spectral transmittance measurements. Third, the relationship was found between digital drive signals and integral density. This complex relationship modeled …

Digital Halftoning Using Fibonacci-Like Sequence Pertubation And Using Vision-Models In Different Color Spaces, Huanzhao Zeng May 1996

Digital Halftoning Using Fibonacci-Like Sequence Pertubation And Using Vision-Models In Different Color Spaces, Huanzhao Zeng

Theses

A disadvantage in error diffusion is that it creates objectionable texture patterns at certain gray levels. An approach, threshold perturbation by Fibonacci-like sequences, was studied. This process is simpler than applying a vision model and it also decreases the visible patterns in error diffusion. Vector error diffusion guarantees minimum color distance in binarization provided that a uniform color space is used. Four color spaces were studied in this research. It was found that vector error diffusion in two linear color spaces made no reduction in the quality of halftoning compared with that in CIEL*a*b* or CIEL*u*v* color spaces. A luminance …

Burnout is the state of being emotionally and physically fatigued by some aspect of one's work leading to the loss of efficiency and productivity. Those employed in the helping profession are uniquely susceptible to burnout as the trials and tribulations of their clients confront them each day. Presented here is research into the possible causes of burnout. The purpose of this study was to determine if levels of burnout correlated with the number of months an individual had worked at the same agency. Burnout was measured on the three subscales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal …

Visual Determination Of Hue Suprathreshold Tolerances, Yue Qiao May 1996

Visual Determination Of Hue Suprathreshold Tolerances, Yue Qiao

Theses

A visual experiment was performed to generate suprathreshold tolerances sampling the direction of CIELAB hue, thereby extending the RIT-Dupont dataset. Thirty nine color centers including three complete hue circles at different lightness or chroma levels and three CIE recommended colors (red, green, blue) were evaluated for hue discrimination. Forty five observers participated in the pass/fail experiments. A total of 32,226 visual observations were made. The statistical method, logit analysis with 3-dimensional normit function, was used to determine the hue discrimination suprathreshold for each color center. The results indicated that the hue discrimination suprathresholds of observers varied with hue angle. The …

Visual-Based Error Diffusion For Printers, Zhenping Bu May 1996

Visual-Based Error Diffusion For Printers, Zhenping Bu

Theses

An approach for halftoning is presented that incorporates a printer model and also explicitly uses the human visual model. Conventional methods, such as clustered-dot screening or dispersed-dot screening, do not solve the gray-level distortion of printers and just implicitly use the eye as a lowpass filter. Error diffusion accounts for errors when processing subsequent pixels to minimize the overall mean-square errors. Recently developed "model-based" halftoning technique eliminates the effect of printer luminance distortion, but this method does not consider the filtering action of the eye, that is, some artifacts of standard error diffusion still exist when the printing resolution and …

The Dilemma For American Business Regarding Health Care Reform, Joseph A. Cernik May 1996

The Dilemma For American Business Regarding Health Care Reform, Joseph A. Cernik

Theses

Businesses of all sizes will have to work together to adequately address controlling their health care costs. At the present time, large corporations have options available to them to control their health care costs, but these options will not be sufficient in the long-term. Since smaller businesses are increasingly declining to provide health insurance to their employees, the result is the growth of the working uninsured who will become a problem that cannot easily be contained and will affect the ability of large corporations to address their health care costs. The dilemma that American business faces is the need to …
