Sampling Systems Matched To Input Processes And Image Classes, Ajit Bopardikar May 2000

Sampling Systems Matched To Input Processes And Image Classes, Ajit Bopardikar

Theses

This dissertation investigates sampling and reconstruction of wide sense stationary (WSS) random processes from their sample "random variables". In this context, two types of sampling systems are studied, namely, interpolation and approximation sampling systems. We aim to determine the properties of the filters in these systems that minimize the mean squared error between the input process and the process reconstructed from its samples. More specifically, for the interpolation sampling system we seek and obtain a closed form expression for an interpolation filter that is optimal in this sense. Likewise, for the approximation sampling system we derive a closed form expression …

Atomic Oxygen Resistant Zr Pendent Polyimide Based On 1,3-Aminophenoxybenzene, Derek Chow

Theses

We wish to evaluate Zr pendent aromatic polyimides based on oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), 1,3-aminophenoxybenzene (APB) and mellitic dianhydride (MADA) as atomic oxygen resistant materials. Eight poly(amic acid) solutions in Nmethylpyrrolidone (NMP) with different anhydrides ratios were synthesized, and four of the eight poly(amic) acids allowed to react with the complex (4-amino-N,N '- disalicylidene- l,2-phenylenediaminato)(N.N '-disalicylidene- 1,2- phenylenediaminato)zirconium(IV), Zr(adsp)(dsp), in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC). The resulting non-pendent polyamic acids and Zr pendent polyamic acids were cast onto glass substrate followed by thermal imidization. Characterization of polyamic acids and polyimides were accomplished by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), …

Global Optimization: Techniques And Applications, Nathan Cahill May 2000

Global Optimization: Techniques And Applications, Nathan Cahill

Theses

Optimization problems arise in a wide variety of scientific disciplines. In many practical problems, a global optimum is desired, yet the objective function has multiple local optima. A number of techniques aimed at solving the global optimization problem have emerged in the last 30 years of research. This thesis first reviews techniques for local optimization and then discusses many of the stochastic and deterministic methods for global optimization that are in use today. Finally, this thesis shows how to apply global optimization techniques to two practical problems: the image segmentation problem (from imaging science) and the 3-D registration problem (from …

Evaluation Of Bispectral Spectrophotometry For Accurate Colorimetry Of Printing Materials, Sergio Gonzalez May 2000

Evaluation Of Bispectral Spectrophotometry For Accurate Colorimetry Of Printing Materials, Sergio Gonzalez

Theses

During recent years the need for accurate color measurements has been increasing. One of the most wide spread techniques to measure color is based on spectrophotometric measurements. However, when dealing with hardcopy materials (paper and inks) that contain fluorescent components, the color measurements become questionable. Conventional spectrophotometers measure total radiance factors of fluorescent materials for the light source within the instrument. Such measurements cannot be used to obtain accurate colorimetry for other illuminants or sources. On the other hand using bispectral methods, which measure reflected and fluorescent spectral radiance factors as a function of incident wavelength, produces illuminant independent data …

Lead Exposure And Physiological Enzymes Among Industrial Versus Non-Industrial Workers In Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates., Fatima Rashid Mattar Said Al-Neamy

Theses

Lead, which is considered to be as a toxic metal without any useful physiological or biochemical function in human body was widely used since the evolution of the industrialized era as a chemical part of much machinery and commodities. Lead containing gasoline, lead paints, lead-soldered cans, lead-glazed earthenware and tobacco are examples of sources of lead. Therefore, lead continues to be a significant public health concern globally.

Nowadays it is particularly impossible to find a person with blood lead level lower than 0.48μmol/L (100 μg/ dL) especially in city areas. Changes in neurobehavioral, cardiovascular, hematological, and renal functions are found …

Discovering The Mill, Jacob Roesch

Theses

The artist describes his thesis work, which consists of 9 oil paintings. A windmill structure is a central theme running throughout the works. The artist explains his reasons for choosing this theme and how it unifies the thesis paintings. The idea sprang from the artist's consideration of an old windmill; a functional item without function. Thus, the windmill became a central symbolic figure in the paintings.

Evil I, Jason Donati Mar 2000

Evil I, Jason Donati

Theses

For the first time, my motivation in the creation of animation wasn't simply to fulfill a class assignment or get a job. Although these issues were still part of the equation, they were not the reason for spending countless hours hunched over and squinting at a computer monitor. I had reached a point with my previous film, "Head Quarters"(Donati, 1), where I no longer felt as if I had something to prove. I was secure with my skills as a computer animator, and could see beyond the technical aspects of my craft focusing more on a personal style and voice. …

An Evaluation Of Split Halftone Cell Screening Technology, Karin Franz Feb 2000

An Evaluation Of Split Halftone Cell Screening Technology, Karin Franz

Theses

Split Halftone Cell Technology is a specific set of PostScript codes that describes to an printing device, how to break down image information. This technology splits the traditional halftone cell in half twice thus yielding four quadrants. Where once there was one halftone dot there are now four dots occupying the same area. It is hypothesized that this technology should enhance the resolution of a target piece twofold, because the halftone dots ultimately determine detail and gray levels. With the use of special software, this new screening technique was used on a fixed resolution imagesetter device to output several test …
