Colorimetric Tolerances Of Various Digital Image Displays, Jason Gibson

Theses

Visual experiments on four displays (two LCD, one CRT and hardcopy) were conducted to determine colorimetric tolerances of images systematically altered via three different transfer curves. The curves used were: Sigmoidal compression in L*, linear reduction in C*, and additive rotations in hab. More than 30 observers judged the detectability of these alterations on three pictorial images for each display. Standard probit analysis was then used to determine the detection thresholds for the alterations. It was found that the detection thresholds on LCD's were similar or lower than for the CRT's in this type of experiment. Summarizing pixel-by-pixel image differences …

Over the past years, it has become clear that genetic factors are of crucial importance in colorectal tumorigenesis. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is responsible of developing numerous colorectal cancers cases by causing mutations in the germline in adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) genes.

Colon cancer is considered the second most frequent cause of death in most of the Western countries. Colonic cancer is common in women and rectal in men. It arise in adenomatous …

Elements And Principles: Experiencing Design Principles Through Interactivity, Niramon Wongsirisup Nov 2001

Elements And Principles: Experiencing Design Principles Through Interactivity, Niramon Wongsirisup

Theses

A designer is a practical person who confronts visual assignments with a process of visual creation. The creative process is used to solve practical problems that occur in any design assignment. However, before one is ready to solve any problem, one must understand the depth and range of their design language. If one's understanding of design is limited, then the range of possible solutions to a problem will be limited. My thesis aims to broaden and enrich a vocabulary of design through the study of its essential elements and principles. If we familiarize ourselves with a multitude of books, we …

An Interactive Journey: Creative Development For Young Children, Nattawan Wanglee Nov 2001

An Interactive Journey: Creative Development For Young Children, Nattawan Wanglee

Theses

Creativity begins in infancy and can be developed when children grow up. Young children are at their peak of creative functioning, which declines with age. They are unique individuals and are highly imaginative. Creativity and imagination are strongly related. Even though all children are capable of creativity, the potential to create remains dormant without practice. Creativity requires practice to flourish. Therefore, creativity plays an important role as much as knowledge does. To educate children, creativity also needs to be paid attention too. Children should be encouraged to represent their world creatively by allowing them to choose what they want to …

Study Of Tantalum Nitride Diffusion Barrier Films For Coppper Interconnect Technology, Deepa Gazula Oct 2001

Study Of Tantalum Nitride Diffusion Barrier Films For Coppper Interconnect Technology, Deepa Gazula

Theses

As technology progressed to ultra - large scale integration leading to smaller and smaller devices, there are continuous challenges in the fields of materials, processes and circuit designs. Copper is the interconnect material of choice because of its low electrical resistivity and high electromigration resistance. However, copper is quite mobile in silicon at elevated temperatures. Therefore, to prevent the diffusion of copper into silicon, a diffusion barrier layer that has fewer grain boundaries, good adhesion to Si and Si02, high thermal and electrical stability with respect to Cu is necessary. Tantalum nitride compounds have been investigated as potential barrier materials. …

A Very Low Bit-Rate Speech Recognition System, Matthew Baecher Oct 2001

A Very Low Bit-Rate Speech Recognition System, Matthew Baecher

Theses

When using extracted speech feature coefficients for speech synthesis, quantization is considered a lossy compression scheme. The data being compressed cannot be recovered or reconstructed exactly. However, in a speech recognition system for command and control purposes, a certain amount of quantization can be allowed, with comparable results. In some cases, quantization even serves to "close the gaps" between the coefficients of the incoming speech signal and those of the templates. Since the coefficients are not being used to reconstruct the signal, a very coarse quantization can be used, enabling a very low bit-rate transmission with very good recognition results. …

Experimental And Analytical Investigation Of A Passive Remote Electromechanical Dynamic Absorber, Todd Nichols Oct 2001

Experimental And Analytical Investigation Of A Passive Remote Electromechanical Dynamic Absorber, Todd Nichols

Theses

For this thesis a new concept, the Passive Remote Electromechanical Dynamic Absorber (RDA) is investigated. The current design utilizes piezoelectric elements to convert the mechanical strain energy of a parent system into electrical energy, which is fed into the RDA. The RDA similarly uses piezoelectric elements to convert the applied electrical energy into mechanical self-excitation. A lumped-system model of the coupled system is developed, accounting for the stiffness and mass of both the parent and RDA systems, along with a coupling stiffness term. Additionally, a coupled-system finite element model, developed in Ansys/multiphysics to include a three dimensional representation of the …
