Deep Structures Wet Etched Into Lithium Niobate Using A Physical Mask, Andrew Randles Jan 2002

Deep Structures Wet Etched Into Lithium Niobate Using A Physical Mask, Andrew Randles

Theses

The present work is an investigation and characterization of a new technique for etching and masking Lithium niobate (LiNb03) to realize high aspect ratio trenches. LiNb03 is a single crystal optically clear (from 350 nm to 5 micometer wavelength), piezoelectric material. It is also inert to most reactants and has a high curie temperature (the temperature that a material loses its piezoelectric effect). These properties allow LiNb03 to be used as a sensor or actuator in harsh environments. To realize this actuator/sensor a multilevel lithium niobate deep etching technique is currently unavailable. The present work uses a chrome gold mask …

Experimental Evaluation Of Impulse Turbine Designs For Chain Testing Systems, Aaron Donlon Jan 2002

Experimental Evaluation Of Impulse Turbine Designs For Chain Testing Systems, Aaron Donlon

Theses

There are several ways to test automotive timing chains for wear in a laboratory environment. One novel method proposed by Borg-Warner Morse TEC uses fluid jets striking an impeller blade. The momentum of the oil striking and deflected by the impeller blade is used to produce a torque. This torque is transmitted to the system through the timing chain. A previous theoretical design study (conducted elsewhere) evaluated some of the design factors as they related to machine performance and ultimately to the torque loads applied to the chain. From this theoretical study came the design for two novel bucket and …

Theses

The environmental damage and global change caused by wildfires are fast becoming issues of local, regional and global concern. Remote sensing techniques are an ideal tool to use for monitoring these threats. Unfortunately, most existing satellites were built for other purposes and are less than ideal for the problems associated with detecting, assessing and monitoring fires. This thesis examines the phenomenology of fires and rank orders several non-traditional detection strategies that have the promise of being more cost effective and less susceptible to false alarms than existing satellite systems and algorithms. The possibility of detecting fires with multi-band "color" measurements …

Elastic Ladar Modeling For Synthetic Imaging Applications, Robin Burton Jan 2002

Elastic Ladar Modeling For Synthetic Imaging Applications, Robin Burton

Theses

The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model was developed to create synthetic images of remotely sensed scenes (Schott et al. 1999). It is a quantitative model based on first principles that calculates the radiance reaching the sensor from the visible region of the spectrum through to the long-wave. DIRSIG generates a very accurate representation of what a sensor would see by modeling all processes involved in the imaging chain. Currently, DIRSIG only models light from passive sources such as the sun, blackbody radiation due to the temperature of an object, and local incoherent illuminants. Active systems allow …

Modeling And Fabrication Of Optically Resonant Periodic Structures, Charles Faisst Jr. Jan 2002

Modeling And Fabrication Of Optically Resonant Periodic Structures, Charles Faisst Jr.

Theses

Optically resonant periodic electrode (ORPEL) structures developed for use as an optical modulator at telecommunication wavelengths using standard microelectronic processes have been successfully fabricated. These structures combine passive optical components (i.e. waveguides, diffraction gratings) with optical and/or electrical excitation, which alters the optical properties of the device. Although the electro-optical effect in silicon is weak in comparison to HI-V materials, a change in the free carrier concentration will cause a change in the effective index of refraction, and can alter the resonance wavelength. Optical test results have demonstrated resonance near 1550 nm on devices with grating pitches ranging from 0.68 …

Analysis Of The Droplet Size Reduction In A Pmdi To The Addition Of A Turbulence Generating Nozzle, Michael Medlar Jan 2002

Analysis Of The Droplet Size Reduction In A Pmdi To The Addition Of A Turbulence Generating Nozzle, Michael Medlar

Theses

Pharmaceutical inhalation aerosol technology has become an important therapy for the treatment of both respiratory and non-respiratory illness. Targeting therapeutic aerosols to the small airways of the lung can effectively treat many of these diseases. Delivery of the therapeutic agent directly to the site of action, for cases involving respiratory diseases, ensures an adequate therapeutic level of the drug is reached, without leading to side effects due to high systemic concentrations. For non-respiratory diseases, the periphery of the lung offers enormous surface area (approximately 100m2) for rapid absorption into circulation. In either case, the appropriate spray characteristics (0.5 um

Analyzing The Costs/Tradeoffs Involved Between Layer 2, Layer 3, Layer 4 And Layer 5 Switching, Gautam Kapur Jan 2002

Analyzing The Costs/Tradeoffs Involved Between Layer 2, Layer 3, Layer 4 And Layer 5 Switching, Gautam Kapur

Theses

The switching function was primarily entrusted to Layer 2 of the OSI model, i.e. the Data Link Layer. A Layer 2 switch performs forwarding decisions by analyzing the MAC (Media Access Control) address of the destination segment in the frame. The Layer 2 switch checks for the destination address and transmits the packet to the appropriate segment if the address is present in its table of known destinations. If the entry for that address is not present, the switch then forwards the packet to all segments except the one on which it came from. This is known as flooding. When …

Derivation Of The Required Elements For A Definition Of The Term Middleware, Maya Mathew Jan 2002

Derivation Of The Required Elements For A Definition Of The Term Middleware, Maya Mathew

Theses

Thirteen contemporary definitions of Middleware were analyzed. The definitions agree that any software that can do the following should be classified as Middleware (1) provide service that provides transparent application-to-application interaction across the network, (2) act as a service provider for distributed applications, and (3) provide services that are primarily used by distributed applications (e.g., RPCs, ORBs, Directories, name-resolution services, etc.) Most definitions agree that Middleware is that level of software required to achieve platform, location, and network transparency. There is some discrepancy about the OSI levels at which middleware operates. The majority of definitions limit it to levels 5, …
