Current Requirements By Electro Hydrodynamic Filter Systems Under Shipboard Operation Conditions, Ravi Shankar Attri May 2002

Current Requirements By Electro Hydrodynamic Filter Systems Under Shipboard Operation Conditions, Ravi Shankar Attri

Theses

An experimental study was performed to determine the current required by an ElectroHydrodynamic (EHD) filter system to clean contaminants from Diesel Engine Lubrication Oil under normal shipboard operation conditions. The amount of current at a set predetermined voltage, which together means Power, was needed in order to anticipate the power required to perform a Shipboard Site Test Evaluation of the EHD filter.

The filter uses the effect of dielectrophoresis to separate contaminants from the lubrication oil. The filter operates at two thousand volts (2KV ac-rms) and thus requires substantial current to energize its electrodes. This type of Power is not …

Another integrated concept of programmable automation that is discussed is the use of two feasibility approaches towards modeling and controlling FMS operations; the most commonly used is programmable logic controllers (PLC), and the other one, which has not yet implemented in many industrial applications is Petri Net controllers (PN). This latter method is a unique powerful technique to …

Determination Of Phase Composition Of Sputtered Tantalum On Steel Substrates By Resistivity Measurements, Younes Abbassi May 2002

Determination Of Phase Composition Of Sputtered Tantalum On Steel Substrates By Resistivity Measurements, Younes Abbassi

Theses

The objective of this thesis was to develop a method of distinguishing between alpha and beta phases of tantalum films on steel substrates, using the four-point probe resistivity measurements. While there is a large difference between resistivities of the two Ta phases, the problem is challenging because the measurements are influenced by the low resistivity of steel.

For reference, the resistivity measurements of tantalum coatings (1-20 μm) on silicon and silicon dioxide substrates were conducted first. The measured resistivities were related to the crystallographic phase composition of Ta, which has lower resistivity in bcc form, α-phase, (13.5 to 42 μΩcm), …

Sustainable Agriculture : Pragmatism, Distinctions On Artifacts And The Role Of The Land Ethic, Dustin Mulvaney May 2002

Sustainable Agriculture : Pragmatism, Distinctions On Artifacts And The Role Of The Land Ethic, Dustin Mulvaney

Theses

This thesis will explore the ethical dimensions of global agriculture from the productionist paradigm to the land ethic in the context of the sustainable agriculture promoted in the fair trade, shade grown, and organic coffee movements. Much of the sustainable development debate in the environmental ethics literature has centered on justifications (from anthropocentric and nonanthropocentric worldviews) for preserving nature. Since agriculture is an artifact of human sedentary civilization, traditional nonanthropocentric arguments do not suffice because of the tendency to focus exclusively on natural systems. Building on the work of Katz's "Pragmatic ReConsideration" and Light's "methodological pragmatism," the role of anthropocentric …

Absorption behavior of CO2 was studied in different hollow fiber membrane modules fabricated using Celgard (polypropylene) and poly(4-methylpentene-1) microporous hollow fibers. Pure water, aqueous solutions of poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer of generation zero and monoethanolamine (MEA) were used as the absorbent; the absorbent solution flowed through the fiber bore, the gas mixture of C02 and N2 flowed countercurrently on the shell side. The system consisted of absorption in one module and stripping with Helium in another module of the same fibers. The absorption characteristics of the dendrimer solution and the MEA solution were studied in the modules built of Celgard …

Development Of A Method To Examine Shear Stress On Cardiomyocytes, Dhawal Desai May 2002

Development Of A Method To Examine Shear Stress On Cardiomyocytes, Dhawal Desai

Theses

Cardiac hypertrophy is the remodeling or enlargement of the heart exhibited by individuals suffering from heart disease. Cardiac hypertrophy involves two mechanisms, mechanical stresses and humoral changes in the cardiac tissue. One such humoral change involves the Renin Angiotensin System (RAS). The primary fimction of RAS is maintenance of hemodynamics of the body mediated through an effector protein, Angiotensin 11. However, RAS has been shown to play a significant role in the pathophysiology of the heart; contributing to hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial infarction. RAS acts through binding of Angiotensin 11 at its receptors. The two forms of Angiotensin 11 …

Teachers were asked about the fairness of the exams, the amount of time spent teaching to exams, and how they perceived the exams as impacting school drop-out rate. Results indicated that teachers believed that the new requirements had …

How Substance Abuse Affects Sibling Relationships: A Qualitative Study, Kellee Garney May 2002

How Substance Abuse Affects Sibling Relationships: A Qualitative Study, Kellee Garney

Theses

The purpose of this research was to gain an understanding of the sibling relationship when one sibling abuses drugs and/or alcohol. It was hypothesized that a sibling relationship with a substance-abusing sibling would have lower levels of closeness and trust than non-substance abusing sibling relationships. Nineteen young adults aged 19-47 were interviewed regarding their perceptions of the sibling relationship. Nine participants had a sibling they perceived as abusing drugs or alcohol, 1 participant was a substance abuser with a non-abusing sibling, and 9 participants had a non-substance abusing sibling. The sample was not randomly selected with participants recruited from Rochester …

Study Of Aberrations Of Stepper Lenses In-Situ Using Phase Shifting Point Diffraction Interferometry, P. Venkataraman May 2002

Study Of Aberrations Of Stepper Lenses In-Situ Using Phase Shifting Point Diffraction Interferometry, P. Venkataraman

Theses

Stepper lenses are tested by the lens manufacturer using various interferometric methods like phase measurement interferometry (PMI), before they are assembled onto the stepper or scanner. Once the system is set up, there are a few methods to study the lens aberrations in-situ using interferometry. The methods currently used are direct ones like direct aerial image measurement (DAIM) or indirect ones in which images of lines and spaces are formed in the photoresist and the aberrations inferred from scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of these. We propose using phase shifting point diffraction interferometry (PSPDI) for the purpose of measuring aberrations …

Automatic Indoor/Outdoor Scene Classification, Navid Serrano May 2002

Automatic Indoor/Outdoor Scene Classification, Navid Serrano

Theses

The advent and wide acceptance of digital imaging technology has motivated an upsurge in research focused on managing the ever-growing number of digital images. Current research in image manipulation represents a general shift in the field of computer vision from traditional image analysis based on low-level features (e.g. color and texture) to semantic scene understanding based on high-level features (e.g. grass and sky). One particular area of investigation is scene categorization, where the organization of a large number of images is treated as a classification problem. Generally, the classification involves mapping a set of traditional low-level features to semantically meaningful …

Dependence Of Vco Jitter On Coupled Noise, Harikrishna Parthasarathy May 2002

Dependence Of Vco Jitter On Coupled Noise, Harikrishna Parthasarathy

Theses

In mixed signal systems, the Phase Locked Loop (PLL) forms an integral part of the clock distribution scheme. The PLL is used to generate a local clock frequency, which is much higher than the external clock. The performance of a PLL is greatly influenced by the Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO). Any nonlinearity introduced by the VCO affects the synchronization between operation of on-chip circuitry and the external components. The jitter or phase noise of a VCO is the most important non-ideality. Phase noise or jitter becomes critical as system frequency increases. The source of timing error maybe due to various …

Effectiveness Of Opc For Systems Integration In The Process Control Information Architecture, Philips Zachariah May 2002

Effectiveness Of Opc For Systems Integration In The Process Control Information Architecture, Philips Zachariah

Theses

A Process is defined as the progression to some particular end or objective through a logical and orderly sequence of events. Various devices (e.g., actuators, limit switches, motors, sensors, etc.) play a significant role in making sure that the process attains its objective (e.g., maintaining the furnace temperature within an acceptable limit). To do these things effectively, manufacturers need to access data from the plant floor or devices and integrate those into their control applications, which maybe one of the "off the shelf tools such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Distributed Control System (DCS), or Programmable Logic Controllers …

Power Distribution Design For High-Density Packages, Ghanshyam Nayak May 2002

Power Distribution Design For High-Density Packages, Ghanshyam Nayak

Theses

This thesis describes the design of a high-density power distribution system. Properties of impedances of power distribution systems are examined. Impedances are classified as self and trans-impedances. These properties are then used to save simulation time, which is a big factor for power distribution system design. Time domain models are extracted for the test cases. A novel 2D-3D technique of placing decoupling capacitors is demonstrated that is based on the effectiveness of the capacitor at that location. The power distribution system acts as a cavity resonator supporting discrete modes that vary with distance. Each capacitor is placed at the physical …

Analysis Of H/W & S/W Techniques For Data Reduction In High Speed Digital Image Processing, Paul Desanctis May 2002

Analysis Of H/W & S/W Techniques For Data Reduction In High Speed Digital Image Processing, Paul Desanctis

Theses

With the widespread utilization of charge-coupled-devices, there is much interest in methods to efficiently process images. The processing, manipulation, and storage of photographic quality digital images place significant demands on today's computers. Even with today's high performance bus structure and real-time operating systems, manipulating full resolution image data may quickly overwhelm computer hardware and software. In response to this, data reduction techniques have been developed to aid in resolving this problem. Two common data reduction techniques include data sub-sampling and data averaging. Data sub-sampling approach is simplistic in nature and perhaps easiest to implement in both hardware and/or software. This …
