A Computational Approach To Arteriolar Bifurcations: Evaluation Of Factors Influencing Predicted Wall Shear Stress, Charles Robinson

Theses

Recent studies of blood flow regulation at the microcirculatory level have linked the physical characteristics of the arteriolar bifurcations and the physiology of the flow through them to the autoregulatory mechanisms exhibited by the endothelial cell lining. Research in this area is decomposed to the following two components: understanding the biochemical activity that takes place at the cellular level as a result of flow-induced stimulation and characterizing the physical flow behavior causing the stimulation. The following study develops the currently accepted method of characterizing the physical flow behavior, in the form of wall shear stress, through computational analysis. The goal …

Sitting On The Rail: The Westralian Worker's Response To Wartime Issues, Robert P. Corr

Theses

The Westralian Worker occupies a privileged place in Western Australia's labour history, as the working class movement's official organ. This study seeks to understand how the paper dealt with its conflicting roles as reflector and projector of labour movement opinion - the observer-agent dichotomy. It does so by analysing the Worker's response to some of the major issues facing labour during World War I. The peace movement, anti-German attitudes, the persecution of the IWW, and the conscription debates are considered. It will be argued that the Worker attempted to accommodate a wide range of views, but as organised labour's divisions …

Nanocomposites with poly (3-MT) were synthesized by using different weight percentages of functionalized nanotubes during synthesis while those with other polymers were prepared using 30 mg of nanotubes. A nanocomposite of poly (3-MT) with nonfunctionalized nanotubes and a physical mixture of poly (3-MT) and functionalized nanotubes was also prepared. The above nanocomposites were characterized by using techniques such as FTIR, UV-visible spectroscopy and TGA. These techniques were used to show the difference between the nanocomposites …

Development Of A Technique To Measure The Mtf Of A Transducer Used In An Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner, Laura Blair Jan 2003

Development Of A Technique To Measure The Mtf Of A Transducer Used In An Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner, Laura Blair

Theses

Beam characteristics of a transducer play a major role in defining the resolution of any ultrasound imaging system. Direct experimental estimation of the beam profile is often desirable, however, one has to carefully correct for effects that are attributed to the measurement process itself. We report here our experience of using a measurement technique developed for circular disk focused transducers. When the anticipated beam size is much smaller than 0.5 mm the use of a hydrophone to scan the monochromatic beam is not adequate. A more suitable approach is to make a measurement in pulse-echo mode using a thin (125 …

A Two-Step Approach Bayesian Network Model Selection, Michael John Kane Jan 2003

A Two-Step Approach Bayesian Network Model Selection, Michael John Kane

Theses

It is often desirable to show relationships between unstructured, potentially related data elements, or features, composing a knowledge database (KD). By understanding the interaction between these elements, we may gain insight into the underlying process from which the KD is derived, and as a result, we can often model the process. Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) in particular, are adept at modeling knowledge databases for two reasons. The first is that BBNs give a structural representation of data elements through a directed acyclic graph (DAG). This ability may make BBNs invaluable in areas such as data mining, where statistical relationships between …

Filter Selection For Spectral Estimation Using A Trichrmatic Camera, David C. Day Jan 2003

Filter Selection For Spectral Estimation Using A Trichrmatic Camera, David C. Day

Theses

Current imaging practices are based on exploiting metamerism to record and reproduce images. As a result, the data obtained in these images are dependent on the viewing conditions and the observer. While these methods produce acceptable results for day to day use, they often do not exhibit the type of accuracy and control required for scientific purposes such as art conservation. As a solution, many research institutions are now advocating the use of multispectral imaging to record the objects fundamental spectral properties to remove the data's dependency on the observer and viewing environment. The research described in this thesis involved …

Near-Lossless Bitonal Image Compression System, Jeremy Pyle Jan 2003

Near-Lossless Bitonal Image Compression System, Jeremy Pyle

Theses

The main purpose of this thesis is to develop an efficient near-lossless bitonal compression algorithm and to implement that algorithm on a hardware platform. The current methods for compression of bitonal images include the JBIG and JBIG2 algorithms, however both JBIG and JBIG2 have their disadvantages. Both of these algorithms are covered by patents filed by IBM, making them costly to implement commercially. Also, JBIG only provides means for lossless compression while JBIG2 provides lossy methods only for document-type images. For these reasons a new method for introducing loss and controlling this loss to sustain quality is developed. The lossless …
