A number of potential methods for the production of multiple light beams for long- path differential absorption spectroscopy have been considered and analysed. The system deemed most suitable has been designed, constructed and tested over two adjacent measurement paths.

The system was built in Cork Institute of Technology to the west of Cork City, Ireland during the period 2000 - 2004. The system has been tested during the winter period of 2003/2004 and ambient concentrations of SO2 and NO2 have been measured and are reported. Ground-source heat pump technology is currently undergoing rapid growth in Ireland. Three aspects of ground-source heat pumps have been studied in this thesis. The market expansion taking place in Ireland, heat transfer from the soil to the pipe of a ground- source heat pump collector, and the design of an innovative sub-slab ground-source heat pump system.

Initial investigations into the use of ground-source heat pumps in Ireland revealed surprising growth in the use of the technology. There have been approximately 1500 systems installed mainly since 2000. The ground-source heat pump market in Ireland has an estimated annual growth rate of …

This research presents the work involved in developing a speech-enabled e-Learning prototype for use in literacy tutoring. As the main objective was to develop an interface for literacy learning, initial research concentrated on establishing a framework for literacy e-Leaming through the use of speech technology. Requirements for best practice e-Learning and the relevance of learning theories to an e-Learning application were also investigated. The technologies to facilitate this, such as text to speech technologies and mark-up languages, were addressed during the implementation of speech-enabled prototypes. This work is primarily concerned with the synthesis and characterisation of di and triiron carbonyl cluster derivatives which contain sulphur and phosphine ligands.

The first chapter is a review of the literature of such complexes. Included are diiron carbonyl clusters which contain phosphine ligands, those which contain sulphur, and those that contain phosphine and sulphur ligands. Triiron carbonyl clusters which contain phosphine ligands, sulphur ligands and both are also discussed.

This study describes firstly, the assembly of a collection of a varied spectrum of staphylococci which can be used to test the efficacy of bacteriophages for the biocontrol of problematic members of this genus. The collection assembled includes a variety of multi-antibiotic resistant MRSA (methicillin resistant S. aureus) strains, hVRSA (hetero vancomycin resistant S. aureus), VRSA and also teicoplenin resistant isolates. It also included a broad range of species of coagulase-negative {non-aureus) staphylococci including S. caprea, S. haemolyticus, S. saprophyticus, S. epidermidis, S. chromogenes, S. capitis, S. hominins and S. hyicus. This thesis aims to provide a novel framework for a multiagent system implementation. The major feature of the proposed architecture is the introduction of the biological concept of hormones. The hormones are passed via the communication network to convey limited global system state knowledge. The agents' response to a hormone is interpreted depending on its own local agent state. This research investigates the performance of avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays that were designed, fabricated, and tested at Rochester Institute of Technology. The APD devices, based on the "reach-through" structure, were designed with various array sizes and dimensions in order to investigate the optimal design. An explanation of the operating principle and device theory is presented, along with the testing methods used in determining the performance of the APD arrays. The results and the reasons behind the performance of the devices are discussed. Suggestions and solutions to problems found are presented as a guide for any future research.

The current study addresses theft of copyrighted music files on the Internet and the perceived effects of media reports surrounding lawsuits brought against individual music file sharers in September, 2003. Professors in several undergraduate communication classes at the Rochester Institute of Technology collected survey responses from 157 participants. Participants were asked to respond to questions related to perceived effect of these news reports on themselves and on others about lawsuits filed by the RIAA against music file sharers. Traditionally, synthetic imagery has been constructed to simulate images captured with low resolution, nadir-viewing sensors. Advances in sensor design have driven a need to simulate scenes not only at higher resolutions but also from oblique view angles. The effects of five experimental parameters in pulsed laser vaporization (PLV) synthesis of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were examined. Parameters investigated include the laser beam raster pattern, reactor chamber temperature, graphite particle size in the target, reactor chamber configuration, and incident laser beam power density. The type and quality of resultant SWNTs synthesized were strongly influenced by altering these experimental conditions. For many years, educators have researched the correlation between student achievement and instructional time. In this study, allocated time, engaged time, and academic learning time will be researched at Walt Disney Elementary in Marceline, Missouri. Through research studies, teacher surveys, and building schedules, the researcher will conclude aspects needed to improve instructional time and student achievement at Walt Disney Elementary.
