Gas-Phase Surface Oxidation And Chlorination Of Carbon Nanotubes, Luciana C. Oliveira Aug 2009

Gas-Phase Surface Oxidation And Chlorination Of Carbon Nanotubes, Luciana C. Oliveira

Theses

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have many desirable bulk properties, such as, very good mechanical strength, high thermal stability, and excellent electric conductance for potential use in a variety of applications. However, their surfaces often require modification in order to achieve functionality. An important first step in the adhesion to the nanotubes is often surface oxidation. To control the metallic and semiconducting properties of CNTs, electron withdrawing halogen atoms are usually covalently bonded to the surface. In this present Thesis, single-walled CNTs (SWCNT) powder and multi-walled CNTs (MWCNT) paper were modified with gaseous oxygen and chlorine atoms. The following investigations were performed: …

Classifying The Fire Regime Condition Class For Upland Oak-Hickory Forests, Paul David Tikusis Aug 2009

Classifying The Fire Regime Condition Class For Upland Oak-Hickory Forests, Paul David Tikusis

Theses

Several reports of widespread establishment of mesophytic vegetation within oak-hickory upland forests have been documented throughout the Central Hardwoods Region. Previous studies suggest deviations from historic disturbance regimes may be a primary driver of vegetation change, necessitating the use of Fire Regime Condition Class (FRCC) guidelines to measure changes in forest structure. Current parameters of forest structure and fuel loading were assessed within mature oak-hickory uplands throughout the ecological subsections of the Shawnee National Forest, including the Greater Shawnee Hills, Lesser Shawnee Hills, Cretaceous Hills, and the Illinois Ozarks. Present species importance values and forest structure were compared with reference …

Telemedicine Patient Identification With Rfid; An Embedded Approach, Onder Aksoy Jul 2009

Telemedicine Patient Identification With Rfid; An Embedded Approach, Onder Aksoy

Theses

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has potential for application in the new field of telemedicine, as the use of radio waves offers advantages over traditional optical technology such as bar codes. Radio waves are not limited by line of sight, they can penetrate objects and communicate in a wireless fashion. However, the same advantage is also the inherent weakness, as radio waves are susceptible to attack. Ongoing efforts have identified forward secure chain hashing as a viable security protocol for RFID authentication. Today's typical RFID communications take place with the "host-reader-tag" arrangement where the computational requirements are performed by a back …

Are All Universals Instantiated?, Lawrence Joseph Rosenberger Jul 2009

Are All Universals Instantiated?, Lawrence Joseph Rosenberger

Theses

In contemporary metaphysics the struggle between realism and nominalism is apparent and important, but it tends to overshadow the struggle within realism itself. As a realist, D.M. Armstrong is very aware of this internal struggle and forms a theory of universals at the heart of this issue. His theory is based on the naturalistic notion that the physical universe is all that there is. This naturalism leads him to formulate the Principle of Instantiation, stating that all universals must be instantiated in a particular. That is, there can be no universals that are uninstantiated and thus reside in what has …

Epistemic Modals And Contextual Projection, Jeffrey Joseph Dauer Jul 2009

Epistemic Modals And Contextual Projection, Jeffrey Joseph Dauer

Theses

The last few years have seen a growing interest in the semantic analysis of epistemic modal claims. By my lights, the most appealing analysis of epistemic modals is the relativistic approach. However, in their paper, “CIA Leaks”, Kai von Fintel and Anthony Gillies present some problems they think the relativistic approach must explain. I aim to defend a variation on the relativistic analysis of epistemic modals. I argue that when we determine the truth-value of sentences containing epistemic modals, we are free to evaluate modal claims from contexts other than the standard context of utterance. This freedom to evaluate the …

The Dispute Between The Creek Nation And The State Of Georgia: United States Diplomacy In The Formation Of The Federal Union, 1784-1790, Michael William Beatty

Theses

During George Washington's first presidential term, Federal authorities faced the challenging task of defining what the new republic meant to themselves, their constituents and diverse populations on both sides of the United States's border with the Indian nations. The Constitution of 1787 had created a plan for government; the task of Federal officials was to make that plan a concrete reality, in the face of opposition from entrenched political and economic interests that neither trusted nor favored the new government in New York City. The most pressing domestic task facing the new government was to define the relationship between the …

An Optimization Approach To Plant-Controller Co-Design, Jared S. Russell Jul 2009

An Optimization Approach To Plant-Controller Co-Design, Jared S. Russell

Theses

Improving the behavior of a controlled mechanical device is traditionally accomplished by manipulating the parameters of the control system in isolation. If permitted, a better solution can be achieved by including the physical attributes of the mechanical structure as optimization variables. However, this expansion of the search space increases the importance of properly formulating the optimization problem to avoid undesirable behavior. Some modern (e.g. H∞) methods can be used to simultaneously optimize dynamic performance and robustness, but they require high levels of understanding and do not handle nonlinearities and arbitrary optimization constraints without additional augmentation. This work proposes and applies …

Absence Of Freight Transportation Plans In State And County Emergency Operations Plans, Christine Brown Jul 2009

Absence Of Freight Transportation Plans In State And County Emergency Operations Plans, Christine Brown

Theses

Natural disasters have the ability to disrupt structured systems in the United States, such as transportation systems and freight routes. When a natural disaster occurs, freight is forced to reroute around the effected areas. Rerouting slows recovery efforts, as well as normal transportation of goods within the United States. Therefore, natural disasters, with respect to freight routes, have widespread impacts and the possibility for acute hardship in disaster-prone areas. This thesis examines how comprehensive state and local level emergency operations plans are with respect to freight transportation rerouting following a natural disaster. Coastal cities can modify freight routes and this …

Alkali Activated Aerogels, Forrest R. Svingala Jun 2009

Alkali Activated Aerogels, Forrest R. Svingala

Theses

Clay aerogels are unique materials formed through the sublimation drying of aluminosilicate clay hydrogels. Aerogels have been an area of increased research interest in the past decade due to their very low density, high surface area/porosity, and very low thermal conductivity. Significant efforts have been made to increase the mechanical strength and moisture resistance of these materials through the incorporation of both organic polymers and fiber reinforcement. Aluminosilicates can also be alkali activated, producing a highly crosslinked 3D network polymer with generally excellent mechanical strength and chemical resistance, but with high density. This work presents a preliminary investigation into the …

The relatively low cost per print and the ability to incorporate color management makes inkjet technology a potential candidate also for use as a proofer for these requirements. Existing software and patents on halftone inkjet proofing were analyzed. A test form was designed to test the proofing models for screening, screen angle, and screen …

Phenomenally Happy: An Examination Of The Ways Heidegger Can Critique And Support Positive Psychology, Samantha Crow Jun 2009

Phenomenally Happy: An Examination Of The Ways Heidegger Can Critique And Support Positive Psychology, Samantha Crow

Theses

This thesis argues that Positive Psychology, one of the newest branches of Psychology, conforms to sets of ideas about the human person which have been accepted from within the Western philosophical and scientific traditions, and that these ideas obstruct its dual ambitions to provide a balance to the weakness model in Psychology and to enhance human flourishing, since these require a comprehensive account of the human person. Heidegger’s work is nominated as a likely source of remedy, for three key reasons: Both systems of thought share superficial similarities which provide the basis for the clarification and development of key ideas …

Limiting Transportation Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The Role Of System Interactions On Policy Portfolio Effectiveness, Matthew Stepp Jun 2009

Limiting Transportation Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The Role Of System Interactions On Policy Portfolio Effectiveness, Matthew Stepp

Theses

Significant cuts in global greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions have been called for by numerous experts and science organizations to avert the negative effects of climate change. Light duty vehicles (LDVs) will play an important role in any new reduction policy due to their daily use, citizen reliance, and significant consumption of fossil fuels. Unfortunately, a single policy aimed at LDVs and one that results in the necessary reductions in a politically acceptable manner may not be possible. Instead, a policy portfolio approach may be needed. Implementing multiple policy mechanisms via a policy portfolio may create system effects that either reduce …

Investigation Of Atmospheric Microplasma Jet For Nanofabrication, Konstantin Yurchenko Jun 2009

Investigation Of Atmospheric Microplasma Jet For Nanofabrication, Konstantin Yurchenko

Theses

The last decade has seen an immense amount of research exploring advanced nanofabrication techniques. Many efforts on this front have moved closer to realization of industrially viable nanofabrication, i.e. nanomanufacturing. Plasma-assisted processes have proven to be particularly suitable for nanofabrication due to a non-equilibrium condition that offers high concentration of chemically reactive species at low gas temperatures. Recently, cost-effective atmospheric plasma technologies have been a subject of intense research. The possibility of producing plasma environments at atmospheric pressure similar to those found at low-pressure offer additional advantages for industrial implementation of nanofabrication processes and surface treatment. Atmospheric pressure equates to …

Optimizing Scalar Multiplication For Koblitz Curves Using Hybrid Fpgas, Gregory Głuszek Jun 2009

Optimizing Scalar Multiplication For Koblitz Curves Using Hybrid Fpgas, Gregory Głuszek

Theses

Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) is a type of public-key cryptosystem which uses the additive group of points on a nonsingular elliptic curve as a cryptographic medium. Koblitz curves are special elliptic curves that have unique properties which allow scalar multiplication, the bottleneck operation in most ECC cryptosystems, to be performed very efficiently. Optimizing the scalar multiplication operation on Koblitz curves is an active area of research with many proposed algorithms for FPGA and software implementations. As of yet little to no research has been reported on using the capabilities of hybrid FPGAs, such as the Xilinx Virtex-4 FX series, which …

Preferred Color Correction For Mixed Taking-Illuminant Placement And Cropping, Erin P. Fredericks Jun 2009

Preferred Color Correction For Mixed Taking-Illuminant Placement And Cropping, Erin P. Fredericks

Theses

The growth of automatic layout capabilities for publications such as photo books and image sharing websites enables consumers to create personalized presentations without much experience or the use of professional page design software. Automated color correction of images has been well studied over the years, but the methodology for determining how to correct images has almost exclusively considered images as independent indivisible objects. In modern documents, such as photo books or web sharing sites, images are automatically placed on pages in juxtaposition to others and some images are automatically cropped. Understanding how color correction preferences are impacted by complex arrangements …
