A Study Of The Discernibility Of Electrophotostatic Copied Typestyles As Compared With Non-Electrophotostatic Copied Typefaces, Laura A. Melchionne

Theses

This paper reports the results of an investigation into the discernibility of seven typefaces when overlayed by 15 different gauges brought into contact with each type face. Discernibility was tested under two conditions; standard (original typeset words) and electrophotostatically copied (second generation copies of the original typeset words) . The question that this investigation was attempting to answer was whether or not certain typefaces are more discernible after electrophotostatic copying than other typefaces. The seven typefaces were chosen because they have a known aesthetic preference that can be catergorized in three groups; most preferred, inbetween and least pre ferred. Preference …

A Study Of Toray's Negative Working Driographic Printing Plate And The Effect Ink Tack Has On Toning In The Non-Image Area, Larry M. Capitano May 1987

A Study Of Toray's Negative Working Driographic Printing Plate And The Effect Ink Tack Has On Toning In The Non-Image Area, Larry M. Capitano

Theses

Driography is a planographic printing process. A driographic printing plate differs from a conventional offset lithographic plate in that water is not required to keep the non-image area clean of ink during printing. Water, or fountain solution, is not required during printing because a silicone rubber coating which repels ink is used for the non-image area of a driographic plate. The first driographic plate was introduced in the early 1970's by the 3M Company. The plate was a positive working printing plate and has since been discontinued. Driography has since been researched by a number of companies but only one …

A Finite Element Solution Of Thermal Wave Propagation In Elastic Media, Dominic N. Dalo Apr 1987

A Finite Element Solution Of Thermal Wave Propagation In Elastic Media, Dominic N. Dalo

Theses

The rational theory of thermodynamics is used to develop equations governing the propagation of thermal waves. A new vector quantity is introduced to account for the thermal waves. The phenomenon of thermal wave propagation is illustrated by considering the problem of one-dimensional heat conduction in a finite slab subjected to a heat flux pulse. The solution is obtained via the finite element method. A discussion of the results and their significance is also presented.

The Effect Of Solid Ink Density On Shifts In Hue In Gray Component Replacement, Hans P. Kellogg Apr 1987

The Effect Of Solid Ink Density On Shifts In Hue In Gray Component Replacement, Hans P. Kellogg

Theses

With advances in computer storage and electronic dot generation scanners a new color separation process has become possible. Although in theory the Gray Component Replacement (GCR) process has been possible since the early twenties, it has only recently been available through contemporary color separation methods. GCR is the process by which the gray component of a particular color reproduction is removed from the reproduction and replaced with black ink. The gray component is defined as specific combinations of the least predominant color and the other remaining inks. A printing form was designed to include three different color reproduction processes: the …

Alternatives To Lay Off, Davidson Nwaneri Okere Jan 1987

Alternatives To Lay Off, Davidson Nwaneri Okere

Theses

In the recent years, there have been some changes in the American corporate life. These changes have been occasioned by some external factors which adversely affect the profitability of the companies. In order to address this problem, many corporations have resorted to cutbacks which more often than not, affect a great bulk of the human resources.

The purpose of this study therefore, is to explore the strategies which companies could use, rather than lay off, during business downturns; and still remain competitive and profitable.

Chapter one of this study focuses on what companies should do to help the affected workers …

A Model For Automatic Optical Scaling Of Type Designs For Conventional And Digital Technology, Bridget Lynn Johnson Jan 1987

A Model For Automatic Optical Scaling Of Type Designs For Conventional And Digital Technology, Bridget Lynn Johnson

Theses

In the history of type design, two methods have been used to scale type-- to produce enlarged or reduced letterforms from a reference size. With original handcut fonts, designers performed optical scaling (scaling by eye) that varied the proportions of letterform features over a range of sizes in a nonlinear manner. That is, letterform feature proportions were size dependent. This was an entirely manual and intuitive process. More recently, however, the use of the lens, as well as computational and other technologies, has allowed letterforms to be scaled automatically from a reference character, a simple proportional enlargement or reduction. To …

A Null-Balance Visual Densitometer, Ramon P. Baez Jan 1987

A Null-Balance Visual Densitometer, Ramon P. Baez

Theses

This thesis deals with the development of a Visual Densitometer, for measuring transmission density, called a "Null-Balance Visual Densitometer". This is a simple instrument made using a calibrated continuous tone negative step wedge. It was used for measuring continuous tone reference patches as used for process control of color separations, in place of an electronic densitometer. The measurements were made by a comparison between the control step wedge and the samples in close proximity over a light table. The basis for this instrument is the human eye's ability to differentiate between two areas of brightness in close proximity. The study …

A Tool For Compiler Testing, Chung-Cho Oliver Cheng Jan 1987

A Tool For Compiler Testing, Chung-Cho Oliver Cheng

Theses

A tool for compiler testing is implemented. The tool is driven by a BNF grammar extended by a device called control flags to incorporate those parts of a language that are not controlled by context-free rules (for instance, use of declared names). The tool produced two sets of program strings such that each production in the grammar is used at least once. One set is produced by Purdom's algorithm. The other is produced by a new algorithm designed by the author which builds a tree and then produces a set of strings from it for compiler testing. The program strings …

The Impact Of Gender Differences On The Ethical Conduct Of Corporate Middle Management, Daniel W. Kemper Jan 1987

The Impact Of Gender Differences On The Ethical Conduct Of Corporate Middle Management, Daniel W. Kemper

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of business ethics and the impact gender has upon the ethical decisions of corporate middle management .

Research has attributed the lack of ethics in businessmen to a decline in moral standards . Because this condition seems to be the rule rather than the exception, it becomes necessary to focus more clearly on the corporate system and the moral development of the individuals who make up this system.

Over the years moral development has been the subject of controversy as many theorists have developed their own ideas as to why people behave morally. …
