An Approach To Energy Conservation In A Manufacturing Industry, William Polignano May 1977

An Approach To Energy Conservation In A Manufacturing Industry, William Polignano

Theses

The approach attacks the problem of control and planning of energy usage via three major categories. These areas are: detection, forecasting and reporting of energy usage.

To initiate any energy program the first step, is the identification of the areas that use the most energy, thus allowing detailed studies to be concentrated in these energy-intensive areas. The author has attempted to show which areas are energy-intensive in his employer's plants.

The second step is the accurate forecasting of energy usage. The author has attempted this via an econometric forecasting model that accurately predicts energy usage based on direct labor hours …

Growth Patterns Of Bacteria In Pressurized Sewage, Dennis Mazzei May 1977

Growth Patterns Of Bacteria In Pressurized Sewage, Dennis Mazzei

Theses

Primary sewage was pressurized at 100 psi for one hour. The effects of this pressure on the growth patterns of general and nitrifying bacteria were examined daily for eighteen consecutive days using Standard Plate Counts and Most Probable Number (MPN) estimates. In conjunction with these tests, the degree of biodegradability was also determined by measuring both daily biochemical oxygen demands (BOD's) and dissolved oxygen levels.

Graphical analysis of experimental data compare the BOD's exterted [sic] by microorganisms to their respective numbers of colonies as determined by plate counts of both pressurized and non-pressurized sanitary sewage diluted to 3. 00%. The …

Sparsity And Decoupling In Load Power Flow Analysis, Kenneth Nazimek

Theses

This paper presents some recent ideas on and methods created by power engineers for the solution of the Load Flow Problem. Beginning with an analysis of the solution of large systems of linear equations, techniques employing elementary matrix operations are discussed to reduce the amount of calculations necessary to achieve repeated solutions. Recent interest in taking advantage of the characteristic sparsity of the admittance matrix is also examined. The problems of operating on and computer storage of large sparse matrices are investigated. Methods to efficiently order, store and work with large sparse matrices are discussed and demonstrated. The general acceptance …

The Anisotropic And Isotropic Strength Behavior Of An Illitic Clay, Miles M. O'Brien May 1977

The Anisotropic And Isotropic Strength Behavior Of An Illitic Clay, Miles M. O'Brien

Theses

The cause and the nature of anisotropy in a cohesive soil was investigated by direct shear and triaxial compression tests. Laboratory techniques and procedures used to prepare isotropic clay samples are given where consolidation was accomplished under hydrostatic pressure. Direct shear tests were performed on these specimens trimmed at different inclinations to the physical horizontal from the block samples. The ratio of undrained shear strengths in any direction to shear strength in the vertical direction was found to be equal to one, proving isotropy existed. Similar tests were performed on specimens trimmed from the same clay consolidated one-dimensionally. Results from …

Dynamics Of The Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System, Joseph P. Hartmann May 1977

Dynamics Of The Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System, Joseph P. Hartmann

Theses

A computer model for the Dynamics of the Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System has been developed for a 17.5 kg canine using the Continuous Systems Modeling Program (CSMP) for the 360 Computer System. The major body components controlling the glucose dynamics (liver, pancreas, body muscle, blood flow, and body fluid compartments) have been modeled in terms of either their production, absorption, or transport of glucose, and the concentration levels of both the hormones and substrates perfusing the body component. A set of mneumonics has also been developed to label the hundreds of constant and variable terms required to describe a complex system of …

An Experimental Study Of Separation Of Binary And Ternary Gas Mixtures By Parametric Pumping, Stephen E. Belsky May 1977

An Experimental Study Of Separation Of Binary And Ternary Gas Mixtures By Parametric Pumping, Stephen E. Belsky

Theses

An experimental study of gas parametric pumping is presented which examines the purification of helium using silica gel to remove the impurity carbon dioxide. Low gas flow rates are used to allow adequate time for equilibrium to be approached, assuming intraparticle diffusion is the controlling mass transfer step. By varying the cycle time, at long cycle times, the effect of penetration length (a function of dynamic capacity) is indicated. Also, at low cycle time, the effects during pressure changes become more significant.

Using low flow rate improves separation effectiveness if evaluated at equal dynamic capacity. When using low flow rate …

Copper Physical Development Of Copper Latent Images, Gregg Tashker, Peter Schreiber May 1977

Copper Physical Development Of Copper Latent Images, Gregg Tashker, Peter Schreiber

Theses

Copper physical development of copper latent images was researched. The proposed method for producing copper latent images was to soak a titanium dioxide in a copper (II) sulfate nucleating bath and expose to UV radiation below 4l0nm. The exposures were to produce the copper latent image. Three physical developers were used to try to intensify the latent images. The developers utilize an iron (II)/iron (III) redox system to reduce copper (II) sulfate to copper metal. The developers also contain carboxylic acids as complexing agents for iron (III) ions and cationic surfactants for stability. The printout achieved was not stable and …

Correlation Study Between Subjective And Objective Scene Classifications, Craig Campbell May 1977

Correlation Study Between Subjective And Objective Scene Classifications, Craig Campbell

Theses

In addition to the quality of an original (transparency or reflection) preferred halftone reproduction is also dependent on scene classification. That is, how the tones of the original are rendered. If the majority of the picture area contains light tones, it is referred to as a high key image. Should the majority of picture area be confined to dark tones, it is referred to as a low key image. When the picture area is composed of the entire tone scale (white, grays, and black), it is referred to as a normal key image. The problem of how to objectively classify …

A Study Of The Effect On Direct Stencil Edge Definition Of Emulsion Thickness, Screen Mesh Count, Fabric Thread Thickness And Coater Blade Thickness, George Bedirian May 1977

A Study Of The Effect On Direct Stencil Edge Definition Of Emulsion Thickness, Screen Mesh Count, Fabric Thread Thickness And Coater Blade Thickness, George Bedirian

Theses

The present study arose out of a desire to test the assumption that in order to obtain direct stencils with good edge definition, one either had to use fine screens or. If using a relatively coarse screen, apply multiple coatings of emulsion to the screen before making the stencil. Neither alternative seemed satisfactory, since the first did not allow optimal use of the scope of screens available, and the second entailed an expenditure of time and supplies that could possibly be shown to be unnecessary. It was therefore determined to carry on an experiment that would show whether direct stencils …

Sharpness Ratings Of A Complete Imaging System, David Blanchard Jan 1977

Sharpness Ratings Of A Complete Imaging System, David Blanchard

Theses

In a complete imaging system, consisting of a camera and a camera lens, four black and white films, an enlarger, a print made from each film and a number of observers, the resultant images were judged subjectively. The system was also evaluated by four acutance models. When the acutance ratings were compared with the sharpness ratings there was not a significant correlation between the two ratings. The author believes that there would be a better correlation between the two ratings if the acutance models were used under the same conditiobs and the same constants as they were formulated under.

Finite Element Analysis And Program For Stokes Fluid Flow, Jeffrey Steele Jan 1977

Finite Element Analysis And Program For Stokes Fluid Flow, Jeffrey Steele

Theses

The theory and computer program for finite element analysis of Stokes (creeping) fluid flow is presented. The element is an eight node, two dimensional isoparametric quadrillateral. The element is formulated directly from the Stokes equations of motion, a special case of the Navier-Stokes equations where inertia terms are dropped, using the method of weighted residuals with Galerkin's criterion applied. Velocities in two directions are solved for at all eight nodes while pressure is solved simultaneously at the four corner nodes only. Several test cases have been run with the program. Very good accuracy was achieved in modeling velocity profiles for …

Interaction Of Bromide And Organic Antifoggants In Development, Miriam Decastro, Kim Eisenberg Jan 1977

Interaction Of Bromide And Organic Antifoggants In Development, Miriam Decastro, Kim Eisenberg

Theses

Various levels of bromide and an organic antifoggant, benzotriazole, were combined in a developer and investigated to determine if an interaction existed. Both nitrogen burst agitation and viscous development were used. It was found that benzotriazole is such a strong antifoggant that interaction occurs only at low density levels, and the influence of benzotriazole increases with development time.

A Digital Signal Processing System Developed For The Optimal Use Of High Density Magnetic Storage Media, Victor Hernandez Jan 1977

A Digital Signal Processing System Developed For The Optimal Use Of High Density Magnetic Storage Media, Victor Hernandez

Theses

High density data recording has traditionally been an essential factor in the development of communication and transmission systems. However, recently more sophisticated applications, including video recording, have necessitated refinements of this technology. This study concentrates on the signal processing techniques used to inhance the packing density of stored data. A comparison of the spectral mapping characteristics of different codes illustrates that the need for equalization can be eliminated and that significant bandwidth reduction can be achieved. Secondly, consideration is given to the deleterious effects of flutter, its associated effects on high density data recording, and the constraints imposed on the …

A Technique For Calculating Atmospheric Scattering And Attenuation Effects Of Aerial Photographic Imagery From Totally Airborne Acquired Data, A.J. Szydlik Jan 1977

A Technique For Calculating Atmospheric Scattering And Attenuation Effects Of Aerial Photographic Imagery From Totally Airborne Acquired Data, A.J. Szydlik

Theses

Image degradation of color aerial photography due to atmospheric effects is spectrometrically evaluated as a function of air column depth for the purpose of defining corrective terms for the conditions under which the particular imagery was acquired. The theoretical development illustrates how these terms may be used to 'subtract out' the atmospheric effects of back-scatter and attenuation from the imagery. The technique suggests that true spectral information of ground objects can be calculated despite the presence of atmospheric effects during aerial photo graphic data collection. To determine the validity of the technique, the totally airborne method results are compared to …
