Calibration Of Flame Ionization Detector For Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Nahid Jabalameli
Calibration Of Flame Ionization Detector For Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Nahid Jabalameli
Theses
Relative Responses and Calibration Factors were developed for several volatile organic (mostly chlorinated) priority pollutant species in order to use one single stable compound (e.g.Benzene) for daily instrument calibration. This would replace the procedure of using a standard mixture of target compounds (25-35). This is of particular advantage because the standard mixture may not have all species stable or may show loss of some components relative to others due to wall adsorption in the standard (compressed gas) stainless steel cylinder.
The use of a single standard species was made possible by developing "accurate" relative response and calibration factors of all …

Investigations Into Rates And Mechanisms Of Mercury Depuration In The Killifish, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Joanne A. Korpanty
Theses
Metallothionein (MT) and glutathione (GSH) have been shown in mammalian research to play a role in the sequestration and depuration of mercury. The sulfhydryl groups on both these peptides have a strong affinity for mercury, MT for Hg2+ and GSH for CH3Hg+. In this study, killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) were force-fed one piece of squid laced with labelled mercuric nitrate to give a final food concentration of 20 ppm 203Hg2+ and 0.03 -0.05 µg g-1 Hg2+ total dose. Most of the mercury, 84.1 ± 12.1% (mean ± standard deviation), is depurated within the …
Characterization Of Tdi-Hema Homopolymer Prepared Via An Immiscible Solvent System. Synthesis And Investigation Of Oligodichloroketene, Manuel Montero
Characterization Of Tdi-Hema Homopolymer Prepared Via An Immiscible Solvent System. Synthesis And Investigation Of Oligodichloroketene, Manuel Montero
Theses
The objective of this thesis has been divided in two parts.
The first part is subdivided into two areas. First a "Universal" calibration curve for gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was construc-ted using different molecular weight standards of PMMA and MMA-HEMA co-polymers. By measuring the viscosity of the different molecular weight solutions and calculating the Vr, (retention volume), from GPC data, plots of In [ η ] Mw against Vr and In Mw against Vr are obtained. These curves can be used to obtain the molecular weight of any linear (not crosslinked) copolymer by simple measurements of viscosity and GPC data. …
Quantitative Evaluation Of Substituent Effects On Stabilization Energies Of Strained And Unsaturated Molecules, Tyler Arthur Stevenson
Quantitative Evaluation Of Substituent Effects On Stabilization Energies Of Strained And Unsaturated Molecules, Tyler Arthur Stevenson
Theses
Thermodynamic stabilization energies are presented for a series of monosubstituted vinyl, cyclopropyl, ethynyl, and phenyl compounds. The energies are calculated using ab initio molecular orbital calculations at the 4-31G level, and also with published experimental heat of formation data. Correlation analyses are then attempted with the dual substituent parameter approach with the stabilization energies. The analyses are also attempted with a triple-parameter approach using Topsom's theoretically calculated X, F, and Ro constants. Among the findings are the facts that π-donating substituents correlate well, while π-accepting substituents do not. Indications of the relative sensitivities of hydrocarbon frameworks to substituent electrostatic and …

Modification Of A Heat Transfer Program (Stan5) To Account For Surface Roughness And Its Application To Aerodynamic Icing, Parthasarathy R. Iyengar
Modification Of A Heat Transfer Program (Stan5) To Account For Surface Roughness And Its Application To Aerodynamic Icing, Parthasarathy R. Iyengar
Theses
In order to be able to predict the local ice accretion rate or the icing profile on an airfoil, it is necessary that a suitable heat transfer coefficient model be availabIe. A computer program has been developed which is capable of predicting the local heat transfer coefficient for a typical two dimensional icing surface. Because of the charecteristics of an icing surface, an existing computer program (STAN5) has been modified to include the effects of the following surface roughness surface curvature and boundary layer transition.
The computer program for the heat transfer coefficient has then been used with an existing …
Computer Analysis Of The Stefan Problem In Cryosurgery, Dong Hyuk Kim
Computer Analysis Of The Stefan Problem In Cryosurgery, Dong Hyuk Kim
Theses
Numerical solutions for determining the freezing front location vs time relation in cryosurgery are obtained by utilizing the heat transfer computer program TRUMP, which employs the explicit finite difference algorithm. The probe geometries of rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical shape with one dimensional heat flow are selected for study. Internal heat generation is considered in cylindrical and sphe¬rical probe geometries, and the difference between the solutions with and without heat generation is discussed. To verify the correctness of the TRUMP solution, comparisons are made in the freezing distance vs time relation with the Neumann's solution and the implicit enthalpy method for …
Decision Rules Applied To Spread Spectrum Signal Detection, Richard Jae Kim
Decision Rules Applied To Spread Spectrum Signal Detection, Richard Jae Kim
Theses
Decision rules for detection of spread spectrum signals were investigated. For each decision rule, error and erasure probabilities were analyzed. The obtained data was used to plot PE vs Pe for constant signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). With the use of the probability of a word error curves the optimum threshold setting was found for a given SNR.
FSK (orthogonal signalling) and PSK (antipodal signalling) were considered for modulating the chips. When the PE vs Pe plots for FSK and PSK were compared, PSK performed better than FSK by a ratio of 6 dB.
Finally, analog and digital correlation of the received …

In order to …
Plate Buckling Under Biaxial Patch Loading, Herli Surjanhata
Plate Buckling Under Biaxial Patch Loading, Herli Surjanhata
Theses
This thesis is concerned with the buckling of rectangular plate-shaped elements under biaxial compressive loading with patch loading along one pair of opposite edges. The loading along the other edges is continuous but the discontinuous loading covers different patches along opposite edges. All the applied loads are uniformly distributed. The critical buckling load of this type of plate element is an important factor in the optimal design of many types of thin-walled structures. Frequently the nature of the problem prohibits an exact or even a general form of solution, thus dictating a numerical approach.
The problem has been attacked to …

An Investigation Of Characteristics Of Blood Velocity In A Simulated Circulation System, Yung-Gang Wu
Theses
The major objective of this thesis is to find the relationship between the blood velocity and the stenosis of the vessel. Tests were performed with different degrees of stenosis at varied logitudinal positions from the testing probe in the vessel of a Z-80 microprocessor controlled artificial circulation system.
Three methods were used to detect the velocity in the vessel: continuous wave Doppler, Pulse Doppler, and a hot-film device. The first method can get the average velocity, while the latter two have the capability to find a velocity profile, and all are important indicators to the arterial occlusion phenomenon.

A Model Of Heat Transfer By Conduction And Radiation In Fluidized Bed, Kouadio Kouame
A Model Of Heat Transfer By Conduction And Radiation In Fluidized Bed, Kouadio Kouame
Theses
A model of heat transfer by conduction and radiation in fluidized beds operating in the bubbling regime is proposed. The analysis of the combined conduction and radiation is one dimensional and is based on the emulsion packet model. The problem is formulated in terms of a non-linear partial differential equation which is transformed into an ordinary differential equation by using the similarity transformation. The packet emulsion phase is assumed to be a semi-infinite medium which absorbs, emits and scatters thermal radiation. Moreover, the packet emulsion phase is considered to be under optically thick condition. Radiative transfer during bubble contact is …

Computer Simulation Of Electro-Static Field Potential To Study The Effect Of An Animal On The Electric Field Between Two Charged Plates, Shekhar Gajanan Potdar
Computer Simulation Of Electro-Static Field Potential To Study The Effect Of An Animal On The Electric Field Between Two Charged Plates, Shekhar Gajanan Potdar
Theses
This thesis deals with plotting of equipotential lines in an electrostatic field created by two parallel charged plates. Between the plates lies a dielectric cage inside which an animal (rat) is kept, on whom anatomical tests are to be carried out after exposing it to a certain electric field intensity for a given period. Values of the actual field to which the animal is exposed can hardly be obtained experimentally. Computer simulation in this case becomes a powerful tool. Starting with the uniform field ideally created between two parallel plates, it is then neccesary to find the effect of the …
Techniques For Measuring Critical Loads In The Presence Of Non-Negligible Higher Mode Imperfections, Rajendra W. Ranadive
Techniques For Measuring Critical Loads In The Presence Of Non-Negligible Higher Mode Imperfections, Rajendra W. Ranadive
Theses
This thesis is concerned with the Southwell Plot method for measuring the critical load of thin-walled structural members whose postbuckling behavior is stable-symmetric.
In this method measurements are taken of the structure's central lateral deflection versus membrane compressive load P. Southwell's hypothesis is that (on a graph of δ/P vs. δ the reciprocal of the slope gives the critical load. He suggests that this is valid because the effect of the fundamental imperfection predominates as the load approaches the critical load+
The writer has examined Southwell's hypothesis in the presence of non-negligible (in fact dominant) higher mode imperfections. The writer …
The Determination Of So3 And So2 In Stack Gas By Collection In A Buffered Formaldehyde Solution, Peter Frank Romeo
The Determination Of So3 And So2 In Stack Gas By Collection In A Buffered Formaldehyde Solution, Peter Frank Romeo
Theses
A new method for the determination of sulfur dioxide, SO2, and sulfur trioxide, SO3, in stack emissions was developed due to questionable results obtained from the EPA Method 8. This new method is a wet chemical procedure utilizing a pH 4.0 formic acid- sodium formate buffered formaldehyde solution to collect both SO2 and SO3 in the same solution. The absorbed SO2 forms a stable adduct, hydroxymethanesulfonate, HOCH2SO3-, in solution with formaldehyde. The SO3 is absorbed as sulfuric acid, H2SO4. The SO3 is determined as …
The Effect Of Chronic Low Level Lead Ingestion On Blood Pressure In Young Dogs, Thomas Robert Vetrano
The Effect Of Chronic Low Level Lead Ingestion On Blood Pressure In Young Dogs, Thomas Robert Vetrano
Theses
The relationship between chronic, low level lead exposure and hypertension has been a controversial issue for nearly a century. This study was designed to examine if such exposure is capable of causing hypertension in young dogs. Twelve three-month old female hounds were split into groups of six and paired with their littermate. One group received a dose of 1 mg/kg body weight of lead daily (orally); the controls received equimolar sodium acetate. Blood pressures were determined using an indirect Doppler technique.
Similar blood pressures were recorded for both groups prior to lead dosing. After nine days of lead ingestion, the …
Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe
Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe
Theses
Acrylamide causes a peripehral neuropathy. The biochemical mechanism by which it does so is the subject of intense investigation. One of the principal hypotheses for this mechanism centers on acrylamide's ability to inhibit glycolysis. This study examines the effects of in vivo exposure to acrylamide on the enzymes of the nerve terminal particle, the synaptosome.
A method for measuring glycolytic enzyme inhibition in the synaptosome was developed. Acrylamide (500 mg/kg) was administered to rats intraperitoneally. Synaptosomes were prepared by the method of Dodd et al, and lysed by sonication. GAPDH activity and NSE concentration were measured. GAPDH inhibition measured in …

A Study Of Color Change With Respect To Dot Misregister In Dot-On-Dot Multicolor Halftone Printing, Christopher Vasko
Theses
Color variation with respect to dot misregister is a phenomenon that has long been observed in the color printing industry. In this paper the relationship between dot misregister and color change in dot-on-dot multicolor halftone printing has been investigated for the additive primaries red, green and blue. By measuring the color difference between in and out-of-register dots the direction of color shift and its magnitude can be determined along with the decrease in lightness of out-of-register samples. Misregistered red and green samples displayed a yellow color shift and misregistered blue samples displayed a purple color shift. The lightness of all …
