Material Engagement Theory And Extensive Enactivism Within The 4e Cognitive Debate: A Phenomenological Approach To Material Agency And Application To Current Technology, Israel Quirit
Theses
4E Cognition is a fairly new field of study within cognitive science, cognitive psychology, and cognitive philosophy. The various approaches to cognition namely embodied, embedded, extended and enacted cognition; provide multi-faceted approaches to cognition. A common claim of these approaches is that cognition may have various contributing factors such as the role of the brain, body and its environments. Thus challenges the traditional idea that cognition exists purely mentally within the confines of the brain and skull. However, even within the 4E Cognition family, some nuanced arguments are hotly debated, particularly among the proponents of Embedded Theories (EmT) and Extended …
Role Of Mkp-2 In Glucose Metabolism And Stress-Induced Insulin Resistance, Yanthrawaduge Savanie Sulakshana Devsirini Fernando
Role Of Mkp-2 In Glucose Metabolism And Stress-Induced Insulin Resistance, Yanthrawaduge Savanie Sulakshana Devsirini Fernando
Theses
The function of MKP-2 in metabolism and metabolic diseases remains largely unknown. In obese conditions mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway get dysfunctional and MAP kinase phosphatases (MKPs) play major roles in regulating the activities of MAPKs. We examined the regulation of MKP-2 expression in vivo, under physiological and pathological conditions, in the liver and other insulin responsive tissues using diet-induced obesity models using novel MKP-2 knockout mice. Also, we examined MKP-2 expression in vitro using insulin sensitive cell lines. We found that MKP-2 is expressed in insulin-sensitive tissues/cells and overexpression may delay muscle cell differentiation. Our novel data demonstrate that …
Experimental Measurements Of The Wing Deformation And Force Production Of Real Monarch Butterfly Wings, Timothy Daniel Robert Morris
Experimental Measurements Of The Wing Deformation And Force Production Of Real Monarch Butterfly Wings, Timothy Daniel Robert Morris
Theses
Monarch Butterflies are capable of flying over 4000 kilometers as they migrate from North America to Mexico. In regard to the aerodynamic mechanisms that drive this extensive flight, little is known. This thesis is motivated by the hypothesis that their flapping wing flight is enhanced by fluid-structure interactions. The objective was to quantify the aeroelastic performance of a real monarch butterfly wing at flapping amplitudes near monarch free-flight amplitudes. The performance of the real monarch butterfly wing was tested by measuring the wing motion and lift at a flapping amplitude of 55° and frequencies between 7.0 and 14.4 Hz. The …

Cold Storage Work And Cold Protective Gloves – A Review, Daena Charles
Theses
The rise of e-commerce and the increasing demand for online grocery shopping and delivery has prompted the growth of warehouse workers subjected to cold temperature working conditions. To ensure food safety and the preservation of inventory, majority of these e-grocery warehouses are cold storage with temperatures from 10°C to -23°C. Exposure to such cold working environments can have effects on the workers comfort, performance and health. As the demand for workers in cold temperature environments increases, it is important to understand how this environment affects the workers and the challenges it may present.
This review evaluates how working in cold …
Accelerating Transitive Closure Of Large-Scale Sparse Graphs, Sanyamee Milindkumar Patel
Accelerating Transitive Closure Of Large-Scale Sparse Graphs, Sanyamee Milindkumar Patel
Theses
Finding the transitive closure of a graph is a fundamental graph problem where another graph is obtained in which an edge exists between two nodes if and only if there is a path in our graph from one node to the other. The reachability matrix of a graph is its transitive closure. This thesis describes a novel approach that uses anti-sections to obtain the transitive closure of a graph. It also examines its advantages when implemented in parallel on a CPU using the Hornet graph data structure.
Graph representations of real-world systems are typically sparse in nature due to lesser …

Impact Of The Emergency Use Authorization On Ventilator Innovation, Krista Stanislow
Impact Of The Emergency Use Authorization On Ventilator Innovation, Krista Stanislow
Theses
Innovation in the medical device industry is crucial to continuously improve the health and wellbeing of society. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of medical devices on the market while balancing the need for continuous innovation. One way the FDA has tried to support innovation is through the development of the 510(k) pathway, which does not require clinical testing as the safety of the device is determined based on a predicate device. Many companies choose to develop products that can obtain approval through the 510(k) pathway. While the 510(k) pathway is …

Exposure To Pesticides And Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Hcc) Risk In And Around Monroe County, Ny, Theodros Woldeyohannes
Theses
The impact of long-term exposure and persistence of pesticides in the environment on human biology is not completely understood. With the proliferation of pesticide application technologies, there have been documented associations between exposure to every major functional group of pesticide and adverse health effects in humans such as cancer and neurological disease. Of observed pesticide-induced cancer health-risks, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has shown some of the most significant associations. Epidemiological study is complex, especially when examining pesticide health risks. It is difficult to understand the significance behind interactions between the large list of pesticide compounds, external environmental factors, and biological variables. …
Functional Investigations Of Proteins And Enzymatic Toxins From Full-Length-Enriched Cdna Of Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus Horridus), Joshua Osula
Theses
Snake Venom is a highly modified form of saliva, contains hundreds of zootoxins, necrotoxins, cytotoxins, neurotoxins, and mytotoxins, all of which are primarily made up of mostly proteins, polypeptides, and other components such as enzymes, lipids, and carbohydrates. Although snake venom is known for its harmful effects, it has also had a positive impact in scientific discovery and medicine. Some toxins from snakes function to inhibit pain, and this means they can be very effective analgesics. For instance, crotalphine is considered a 14-amino-acid-peptide that has a disulfide bond and shows analgesic properties through TRPA1 desensitization. This …
Effects Of Eye Imagery On Criminal Justice And Forensic Students Cheating In Online Testing, Kortni Larue
Effects Of Eye Imagery On Criminal Justice And Forensic Students Cheating In Online Testing, Kortni Larue
Theses
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a well-established subsection of environmental criminology in which aspects of the environment are altered in order to prevent crimes before they happen. This is primarily accomplished in two ways: physical and psychological. CPTED strategies often utilize both in order to prevent crime, but there is a lack of primarily psychologically based research in circulation. This includes the manipulation of the biopsychological response to gaze detection in order to increase prosocial behavior. Additionally, there is a lack of studies indicating if CPTED strategies are effective in a classroom setting and even less concerning online …
Algal Wrack Community Composition And Succession On A Sandy Beach In San Diego, Ca, Marisol Palomares
Algal Wrack Community Composition And Succession On A Sandy Beach In San Diego, Ca, Marisol Palomares
Theses
Sandy beaches are high-energy impact zones that produce little to no organic material. Much of the organic matter on beaches is washed up on shore in the form of algal wrack, providing a vital source of nutrients, food, and habitat for a variety of organisms on the sandy beach. Over time wrack will decay and decompose, releasing nutrients including nitrogen and phosphorus, which are consumed by benthic microalgae and bacteria. The type of wrack and geomorphology of the beach environments affect decomposition, which in turn supports a variety of different wrack associated macrofaunal communities. Different species of algal wrack will …

Nature-Inspired Topology Optimization Of Recurrent Neural Networks, Abdelrahman A. Elsaid
Theses
Hand-crafting effective and efficient structures for recurrent neural networks (RNNs) is a difficult, expensive, and time-consuming process. To address this challenge, this work presents three nature-inspired (NI) algorithms for neural architecture search (NAS), introducing the subfield of nature-inspired neural architecture search (NI-NAS). These algorithms, based on ant colony optimization (ACO), progress from memory cell structure optimization, to bounded discrete-space architecture optimization, and finally to unbounded continuous-space architecture optimization. These methods were applied to real-world data sets representing challenging engineering problems, such as data from a coal-fired power plant, wind-turbine power generators, and aircraft flight data recorder (FDR) data.
Initial work …

Evaluating Appearance Differences Of Color 3d Printed Objects, Matt Ronnenberg
Theses
Color 3D printing is a relatively young technology with several exciting applications and challenges yet to be explored. One of those challenges is the effect that three dimensional surface geometries have on appearance. The appearance of 3D objects is complex and can be affected by the interaction between several visual appearance parameters such as color, gloss and surface texture. Since traditional printing is only 2D, several of these challenges have either been solved or never needed to be addressed. Complicating matters further, different color 3D printing technologies and materials come with their own inherent material appearance properties, necessitating the study …

Differentiating Between Invasive And Native Populations Of Bighead And Silver Carp Using Ms-Aflp, Erika Renee Sarvela
Differentiating Between Invasive And Native Populations Of Bighead And Silver Carp Using Ms-Aflp, Erika Renee Sarvela
Theses
When a species is introduced outside their native range, the genetic diversity of the introduced population is generally decreased due to the founder effect, and the fitness of individuals in the introduced population may decrease due to inbreeding depression. Invasive species are a paradox to this paradigm because while the initial population size of an invasive species may be small in their non-native range, the individuals are able to survive, eat, and reproduce so successfully, that they have deleterious effects on native species. One mechanism that invasive species use to overcome a lack of genetic diversity and adapt to their …
Identification Of Micrornas Related To Type 2 Diabetic Osteopath, Mouza Mohammed Saeed Alfashti Alaleeli
Identification Of Micrornas Related To Type 2 Diabetic Osteopath, Mouza Mohammed Saeed Alfashti Alaleeli
Theses
T2DM is linked to an increase in the fracture rate as compared to the non-diabetic population even with normal or raised Bone Mineral Density (BMD). Previous studies have addressed the question of how T2DM induces osteoporosis; the exact underlying mechanism is still elusive. Bones undergo continuous remodelling throughout life. Bone remodelling implicates the coupling of osteoclastic bone resorption and osteoblastic bone formation. This process is controlled by numerous genetic, hormonal, and neurogenic mechanisms. Osteoporosis is a result of bone loss that occurs by uncoupled remodelling. The existing evidence indicates that short non-coding RNAs known as microRNAs (miRNAs), are the key …
Trilepisium (Moraceae): Four New Species From Madagascar, Shawn Kelley
Trilepisium (Moraceae): Four New Species From Madagascar, Shawn Kelley
Theses
Trilepisium is a genus of tree with two member species: T. madagascariense and T. gymnandrum. This genus shows diversity in habit and morphology greatly exceeding that expected of a genus with two member species. Concerted collection efforts since the last revision have suggested there are several unrecognized species within Trilepisium and a revision is needed. Chapter one of this thesis details the history of this taxanomically challenging genus and presents the results of our study of 600 Malagasy herbarium specimens. Trilepisium is more adequately circumscribed as containing 17 species, 11 of which are new to science. Chapter two contains …
New Methods For Deep Learning Based Real-Valued Inter-Residue Distance Prediction, Jacob Barger
New Methods For Deep Learning Based Real-Valued Inter-Residue Distance Prediction, Jacob Barger
Theses
Background: Much of the recent success in protein structure prediction has been a result of accurate protein contact prediction--a binary classification problem. Dozens of methods, built from various types of machine learning and deep learning algorithms, have been published over the last two decades for predicting contacts. Recently, many groups, including Google DeepMind, have demonstrated that reformulating the problem as a multi-class classification problem is a more promising direction to pursue. As an alternative approach, we recently proposed real-valued distance predictions, formulating the problem as a regression problem. The nuances of protein 3D structures make this formulation appropriate, allowing predictions …

One-Pot O-Alkylation And C-C Cross-Coupling Reactions Involving Stabilized Phosphoranes, Areej Hashim Mohamed
Theses
This thesis is concerned with the one-pot reactions that are considered to be beneficial to preserve resources, save time, and are deemed a green chemistry strategy. To plan such one-pot reactions, it is important to combine two or more reactions that are compatible with each other and can be run under the same reaction conditions. In this work, possibilities of a combination of Wittig-olefination and Suzuki C-C-cross coupling reactions are explored further. Reaction sequences involve the combination of a Suzuki-reaction / Wittig olefination, a Suzuki reaction / Wittig olefination/hydrolysis, and a Suzuki-reaction / double Wittig olefination. In all cases, stabilized …
