Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Magnetoelastic System, Chetan O. Modi
Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Magnetoelastic System, Chetan O. Modi
Theses
A dynamically buckled elastic beam is a physically realizable system exhibiting both periodic and chaotic behavior. The equations of motion are developed as a finite dimensional Galerkin approximation of an infinite degree of freedom system. Generalized eigenvalues or Lyapunov exponents are introduced as a quantitative characterization of chaos, i.e. unstable but bounded motion. A semi-discrete method for the estimation of the Lyapunov spectrum is used to investigate the influence of the forcing parameters on the system response. The equations of motion are then integrated numerically to correlate the steady state response with the value of the associated largest Lyapunov exponent.

Astronauts And Xingu: An Exhibition Of Cultural Ideograms, Edward Mineck
Theses
The intention of my thesis is to alter some of American culture's prevailing sentiments on the relationship between: masculine and feminine; visceral and cognitive; natural and technological; as well as altering perceptions of the loci of power in our culture. The thesis exhibition was composed of seventeen gum bichromate assemblages composed of elementary images appropriated from popular media. Each composite piece is a recontextualization of extant representations. I have taken things from their typical or original context and re-presented them in a context that I have selected and directed. The new relationships established among the appropriated component images and the …
Integrated Component-Based Computer Design Modeling System : The Implications Of The Representation Of Control Parameters On The Design Process, Allen D. Jablonski
Integrated Component-Based Computer Design Modeling System : The Implications Of The Representation Of Control Parameters On The Design Process, Allen D. Jablonski
Theses
The design process is dependent on a clear order of integrating and managing all of the control parameters that impact on a building's design. All component elements of a building must be defined by their: Physical and functional relations; Quantitative and calculable properties; Component and/or system functions. This requires a means of representation to depict a model of a building that can be viewed and interpreted by a variety of interested parties. These parties need different types of representation to address their individual control parameters, as each component instance has specific implications on all of the control parameters.
Representations are …

Biodegradation Of Hexachlorocyclohexane In Sand And Wastewater Using Immobilized Phanerochaete Chrysosporum, Ajaykumar C. Gami
Theses
The present study was carried out in order to assess the ability of Phanerochaete chysosporium to degrade lindane (hexachlorocyclohexane) in sand as well as in water. It was found that the fungus is immobilized on saw dust, it is able to degrade lindane in a packed-bed reactor configuration, with a first-order rate constant of 0.00066min-1. The fungus is also able to degrade lindane in sand. As with the packed-bed reactor, a supplemental carbon source (glucose) is required. In this study it was found that a glucose concentration of 20 gm/kg of sand, and 40% w/w moisture content, give …
Estimating 3-D Motion And Structure Parameters Of A Rigid Planar Object By Establishing Landmark Correspondences, Herman Agustiawan
Estimating 3-D Motion And Structure Parameters Of A Rigid Planar Object By Establishing Landmark Correspondences, Herman Agustiawan
Theses
The application of a landmark based approach in recognizing 3-D rigid planar objects[3] along with two different motion and structure estimation algorithm [21][23] have been studied to perform motion and structure estimation tasks of moving objects. The recognition algorithm is based on a sphericity value derived from affine transformation that maps feature points in the object under observation from first to second view in the 2-D image space. The motion and structure estimation algorithm is based on a unique mapping given four or more feature point correspondences.
More than ten experiments have been done including small and large rigid motions. …
Adaptive Stack Filtering By Lms And Perceptron Learning, Yu-Chou Huang
Adaptive Stack Filtering By Lms And Perceptron Learning, Yu-Chou Huang
Theses
Stack filters are a class of sliding?window nonlinear digital filters that possess the weak superposition property(threshold decomposition) and the ordering property known as the stacking property. They have been demonstrated to be robust in suppressing noise. Two methods are introduced in this thesis to adaptively configure a stack filter. One is by employing the Least Mean Square(LMS) algorithm and the other is based on Perceptron learning.
Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods to noise suppression.
A Proposed Model For Comparing The Performance Of Neural Networks And Statistical Approaches In Predicting Project Profits Of An Asphalt Paving Company, Josephine Giaimo
A Proposed Model For Comparing The Performance Of Neural Networks And Statistical Approaches In Predicting Project Profits Of An Asphalt Paving Company, Josephine Giaimo
Theses
It is currently assumed that the performance of a model for predicting project profits of an asphalt paving company varies with an unknown number of parameters. An earlier study indicates that the parameters are not well understood (Berry, 1990). A search of the literature suggests that the available models usually are described by those who develop and use them as universally reliable and valid tools for solving complex problem (Allman, 1989; Bumke, 1988; Clark, 1988; Cohen & Howe, 1988; Fillon, 1989; Kling, 1990; Lawrence, Petterson, & Hartzberg, 1990; Marose, 1990; Pollak, 1988; Reynolds, 1988; Sullivan & Reeve, 1988; Thurber, 1988). …

Molecular Modeling Studies Of Anatoxin Agonist Analogues, Qizhan Yao
Theses
Thirty two anatoxin agonist analogues were investigated by means of computerassisted molecular modeling studies to delinate factors that may contribute to potency. The structures were generated from the fragment libraries from the SYBYL program, and minimized by the MM2 program. Then a systematic conformational search was done based on the global minimized structures to get bioactive conformations.
Ten agonists were further studied after the conformation optimization. The most potent agonists among these analogues, (+)-anatoxin-a (11), about 300 times as potent as carbamylcholine, severed as a template for the rest to examine the superimposability of the hydrogen bonding acceptor site and …

Temperature Scale-Up On Rotating Biological Contactor Nitrification System, Kuanchun Lee
Theses
The relationship between RBC scale-up factor (SUF) and wastewater temperature is successfully developed by using Dr. Wu's mathematical model as a basis and 114 sets of data from the operation of 8 full-scale and 5 pilot-scale RBC plants served for NH3-N removal. The SUF obtained from this study is put into practice to present the scale-up of hydraulic loading for basic full-scale RBC plant design when the pilot study results are known and the design efficiency is fixed. An additional study is made to investigate two different RBC products manufactured by Autotrol Inc. and Lyco Inc. in terms of the …
Experimental Study On Filterability Of Leukocytes, Qi Wang
Experimental Study On Filterability Of Leukocytes, Qi Wang
Theses
The filterability of leukocytes treated with A23187, Cytochalasin B, PAF and FMLP and pumped through 5 µm polycarbonate filters at a constant flow rate was examined. The concentration of the four agents was systematically varied. The filtration pressure was continuously recorded for data analysis. The pressure-time curves generally showed multiphasic components, following a small jump step at the beginning of the filtration process. The pressure rise was initially fast (initial faster increased phase, IP) and then rose more slowly (later slower increased phase, LP). The leukocytes treated with A23187 showed increased IP and higher LP values; those which were treated …

Also studied, was the possible use of either untreated or treated (with hexade-cyl ammonium bromide) clay to enhance the stabilization of the organic. The sample composition was : 62% foundry baghouse dust (or 60% if 2% clay as added to the sample), 4.5% cement, 14% coal fly ash, 19.5% water. Pentachlorophenol was chosen as represen¬tative of the organic contamination. All tests were performed after curing the samples at 22°C, 98% Rh for 28 days. The …
Conventional And Differential Scanning Optical Microscopy Using Higher-Order Gaussian-Hermite Beam Patterns, Peter Chrusch
Conventional And Differential Scanning Optical Microscopy Using Higher-Order Gaussian-Hermite Beam Patterns, Peter Chrusch
Theses
This thesis addresses the problem of contrast in scanning optical microscopy by resorting to differential imaging. The use of a unique, two-wavelength laser as the coherent source in a scanning format is investigated. In particular, it is shown that the TEM10 mode of this laser provides a novel method for performing simultaneous conventional and differential microscopy. Results are presented on the use of the laser for performing differential imaging. In addition, the technique is extended to encompass a second, tunable, laser. Rather than performing electronic differentiation, the TEMi0 mode of this, second, laser provides an in-situ, optical differential microscope. Two …
Aggression And Symbols Of Power, Karen Kuhn
Aggression And Symbols Of Power, Karen Kuhn
Theses
Weapons are one of the oldest and most significant forms of artifacts, occurring in virtually all human cultures. Weapons and their technology often determine power structures, not only by brute force of arms, but by long standing respect to ritual aggression. In many cultures, weapons have become abstracted and formalized to become symbols of power and authority, as in a ruler 's scepter, which is a glorified war club. Jewelry functions in much the same manner, proclaiming the social status of the wearer, although in the western world, we have lost most of the symbolic meaning of our jewelry; for …

Theses
This thesis describes techniques with design nomographs for supplying power to CMOS and microelectromechanical implanted devices. These applications require voltages in the range of 5 to 50 volts. Different kinds of voltage multiplier circuits were used to achieve high voltage output. The AC-to-DC and DC-to-DC capacitive bootstrap voltage multipliers are designed and analyzed. The AC-to-DC and DC-to-DC inductive bootstrap voltage multiplier circuits are presented and the SPICE simulations are done with those circuits. Four different options of inductive link high voltage power supply are presented, analyzed and compared. The link parameters of two VLSI-compatible square-shaped coils are calculated in both …
Landmark-Based Partial Shape Recognition By A Two-Stage Bam Neural Network, Xianjun Liu
Landmark-Based Partial Shape Recognition By A Two-Stage Bam Neural Network, Xianjun Liu
Theses
In this thesis, we develop a Bitfirectional Associative Memory (BAM) based neural network to achieve partial shape recognition. To recognize objects which are partially occluded, we represent each object by a set of landmarks. The landmarks of an object are points of interest relative to the object that have important shape attributes. To achieve recognition, feature values (landmark values) of each model object are trained and stored in the network. Each memory cell is trained to store landmark values of a model object for all possible positions. Given a scene which may consist of several objects, landmarks in the scene …
Characteristic Shape Recognition With Fuzzy Dustering, Kalpesh J. Patel
Characteristic Shape Recognition With Fuzzy Dustering, Kalpesh J. Patel
Theses
The problem of shape detection has been treated as one of clustering. A fuzzy-shell clustering(FSC) has been formulated as non linear least squares with fuzzy memberships as weights. An improved FSC algorithm has been proposed based on this formulation to partition the input feature vectors into hyper-spheres. To illustrate the usefulness of improved FSC we have provided numerous examples in 2-D space. The idea has been extended to fuzzy ellipsoidal-shell clustering (rESC). A FESC algorithm has been proposed to partition the input feature vectors into ellipsoidal patterns. To substantiate our claims regarding usefulness of this algorithm we have provided many …
Neural Net Classification Of States In Finite State Vector Quantization, Zhigang Zhang
Neural Net Classification Of States In Finite State Vector Quantization, Zhigang Zhang
Theses
In this thesis, a new image coding technique based on Neural Network Finite State Vector Quantization(NNFSVQ) is presented. The new design takes advantage of the high interblock spatial correlation of pixels in typical grey-level images, in addition to intrablock correlation already exploited by vector quantization (VQ). Although many FSVQ require large memory space for the storage of the numerous state codebooks, the memory space requirement of NNFSVQ can be reduced by a very large factor (about 102-103) to manageable size without impairing image quality. Simulation experiments have shown that by using NNFSVQ the bit rate can …
Ligament Reconstruction : A Biomechanical Cadaveric Test Of Autogenous Repairs And The In Vivo Evaluation Of Synthetic Scaffold Materials, Anne Marie Daly
Ligament Reconstruction : A Biomechanical Cadaveric Test Of Autogenous Repairs And The In Vivo Evaluation Of Synthetic Scaffold Materials, Anne Marie Daly
Theses
The knee joint is the largest and one of the most complex joints in the human body. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the major intra-articular ligaments responsible for controlling and guiding the knee through most of its range of motion and its rupture alters normal joint mechanics.
One objective of this thesis was to determine if two autogenous tissue ACL reconstruction methods were biomechanically equivalent. The first method using the central one-third of the patellar tendon has been used clinically since the early 1960s. The second method utilizes portions of both the semitendinosus and the iliotibial band. …
Scatterer Number Density Estimation For Tissue Characterization In Ultrasound Imaging, Hui Zhu
Scatterer Number Density Estimation For Tissue Characterization In Ultrasound Imaging, Hui Zhu
Theses
Ultrasound RF signal, backscattered from an inhomogeneous parenchymal tissue has the character of a random signal. It is the random fluctuating nature of this signal that is responsible for the speckle pattern observed in the images. These random signals, nevertheless, bear information related to the random scattering structure of the medium. Statistical moments of the signal can serve as feature parameters that are related to mean scatterer spacing in the random structure. However, such a feature is biased because the statistical nature of the RF signal depends, not only on the random tissue scattering structure, but also on the resolution …

Preparation Of A Bank Of Cloned Genes From The Chromosome Of Agrobacterium Tumefaciens And The Isolation Of Genes Involved In Dna Repair And Genetic Recombination, Geoffrey A. Bartholomeusz
Preparation Of A Bank Of Cloned Genes From The Chromosome Of Agrobacterium Tumefaciens And The Isolation Of Genes Involved In Dna Repair And Genetic Recombination, Geoffrey A. Bartholomeusz
Theses
The virulent property of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens is associated with its tumor inducing (Ti) plasmid. Recent studies on the virulence of this bacterium has shown that genes located on its chromosome also contribute to this property. One such gene is thought to produce a protein that has properties similar to that of the recA protein of E. colt. This thesis outlines the techniques that were used to try and isolate the recA-like gene from the chromosome of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens. All the techniques used in this study are outlined in detail and an explanation given for the choice of each …
Demulsification And Separation Of Oil In A Water/Particulate System, Fong-Jung Tai
Demulsification And Separation Of Oil In A Water/Particulate System, Fong-Jung Tai
Theses
The wastewater generated from installation factories contains high suspended solids ( SS ) and oil. Effective removal of oil and clay particles in washrack wastewater can be achieved by using organic polymer TFL-398 alone or in conjunction with alum. The dissolved/emulsified oil concentration and suspended solids are used to represent the degree of oil demulsification and clay particles destabilization, respectively.
To improve the efficiency of oil demulsification and reduce the chemical consumption, pretreatment of the influent wastewater is essentially necessary. pH adjustment to 11-12 generally reduces chemical requirement. Total oil concentration was reduced significantly at pH = 11.7 without any …
An Artificial Neural Network For Redundant Robot Inverse Kinematics Computation, Wibawa Utama
An Artificial Neural Network For Redundant Robot Inverse Kinematics Computation, Wibawa Utama
Theses
A redundant manipulator can be defined as a manipulator that has more degrees of freedom than necessary to determine the position and orientation of the end effector. Such a manipulator has dexterity, flexibility, and the ability to maneuver in presence of obstacles. One important and necessary step in utilizing a redundant robot is to relate the joint coordinates of the manipulator with the position and orientation of the end-effector. This specification is termed as the direct kinematics problem and can be written as x = f(q)
where x is a vector representing the position and orientation of the end-effector, q …

A Comparative Study Of Cadmium Uptake By Cells Of Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Shubhangi Rajan Bhende
Theses
Cadmium uptake by cells of Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacteria was studied. Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacterial cells were separated from activated sludge collected from the Parsippany Troy Hills Water Pollution Control Plant (NJ) by isolating them on agar plates. These were grown separately and used for uptake experiments.
Gram-positive bacterial cells showed 17% more uptake of cadmium as compared to Gram-negative cells at 30°C and pH 6.6. More than 95% of the total cadmium removal from the solution was observed during first 5 min. of cell-metal contact time. In case of Gram-positive bacteria cadmium uptake decreased by 5-10% after …

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of The Progression Of Aids, Anju H. Nagpal
Theses
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a pernicious disease acknowledged as a world health problem. One of the major issues in the study of AIDS is understanding the manifestation and the progression of the disease following the transmission of HIV. Unfortunately, the present state of biological knowledge does not yet give us a reliable means of evaluating these phenomena. A simulation approach is, therefore, extremely useful in predicting the various phases of the deteriorating physiological status of the patient. In the present study we have focused on the development of a mathematical model of the …
