Food Habits Of A Re-Introduced River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) Population In Western New York- Annual Diet, Temporal And Spatial Variation In Diet And Prey Selection Conclusions, Melissa Skyer

Theses

River otters were re-introduced to Western New York by the Department of Environmental Conservation between 1995 and 2000. The success of this population relies heavily on the availability of suitable prey. Diet was investigated via frequency of prey occurence in scats from 2004-2006. Overall diet was comprised mostly of fish and crayfish. The major fish taxa were Centrarchidae (sunfish), Cyprinidae (carp), and Salmonidae (trout); less common were Esocidae (pike and Castostomidae (sucker). All fish species combined ocurred at 100% frequency during the winter and spring months, but declined during the summer and fall. Sunfish prey were at their highest frequency …

Modification Of A Longitudinal Load Cell Balance And An Experimental Study Of Winglet Effects On Stall For Application To Micro Air Vehicles, Aaron J. Grilly

Theses

Interest in Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) has increased in recent years. The ability of small craft to fly covert surveillance missions or carry some other sensory payload while providing real-time information has sparked the growth of research in the field. The Rochester Institute of Technology has the capacity to facilitate MAV research. RIT's subsonic wind tunnel is capable of obtaining the low-speed flow to obtain the testing Reynolds numbers of 75,000 to 200,000. This research focused on the repair work of the longitudinal piezoelectric load cell balance. The balance had not been maintained properly and needed many repairs. Once modifications …

Fault-Tolerant Design Of Rf Front-End Circuits, Tejasvi Das Sep 2006

Fault-Tolerant Design Of Rf Front-End Circuits, Tejasvi Das

Theses

The continuing trends of scaling in the CMOS industry have, inevitably, been accompanied by an ever-increasing array of process faults and fabrication complexities. The relentless march towards miniaturization and massive integration, in addition to increasing operating frequencies has resulted in increasing concerns about the reliability of integrated RF front-ends. Coupled with rising cost per chip, the fault-tolerant paradigm has become pertinent in the RFIC domain. Two main reasons have contributed to the fact that fault-tolerant solutions for circuits that operate in the GHz domain have not been realized so far. First, GHz signals are extremely sensitive to higher-order effects such …

Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine the potential of combining hydroxyapatite (HA) and polymers to form synthetic composite materials used for bone tissue engineering applications. In this study, ceramic-biodegradable polymer composites are fabricated by electrospinning method. The biodegradable polymers used are poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). Two types of HA-polymer solutions are first prepared to achieve HA weight percentage of 0, 10, and 25%of the total combined weight of HA and PLLA, and HA and PLGA. The solutions are electrospun to form nanofibrous mats incorporated with HA powder. A biomimetic process was also conducted as a …

Sweet! Cartoons And Contemporary Painting, Sarah Atlee Aug 2006

Sweet! Cartoons And Contemporary Painting, Sarah Atlee

Theses

I am an artist, and I use cartoons. My work consists mainly of images that communicate to the viewer through recognizable forms. I also use text to help tell my stories. I often create visual elements that function in place of text or information. I use a third visual tool, a hybrid descendant of images and words: the cartoon. Cartoons, once situated at the margins of visual discourse, now have a place in the fine art world. There are comics and animated television shows created for adult audiences. There are gallery and museum shows of work influenced by cartoons, not …

Tool For The Identification Of Differentially Expressed Genes Using A User-Defined Threshold, Renikko Alleyne Aug 2006

Tool For The Identification Of Differentially Expressed Genes Using A User-Defined Threshold, Renikko Alleyne

Theses

Microarray and 2D gel experiments are used for the large scale measurement, and comparison of gene expression. Since these experiments generate large and complex amounts of data, a great challenge the researcher faces is trying to find ways to analyze this data. This paper focuses on the tool DiffExpress, which was designed to make the gene expression analysis process easier. One of the main features of DiffExpress is the user defined threshold which allows users to set their personal restriction of the expression change at which genes are differentially expressed. DiffExpress also makes use of graphs such as the Scatter …

Structural Analysis Of The Egr Family Of Transcription Factors: Templates For Predicitng Protein - Dna Internations, Jamie Duke Aug 2006

Structural Analysis Of The Egr Family Of Transcription Factors: Templates For Predicitng Protein - Dna Internations, Jamie Duke

Theses

The EGR family of transcription factors is known to be activated in cells exposed to growth factors in a variety of tissues. The overall structure of the family is highly conserved while the amino acid sequence can be quite diverse allowing for a wide array of DNA recognition sequences. Through homology modeling it is possible to reproduce the structure of the DNA binding domain of EGR proteins, which consists of three zinc fingers. It has also been determined through molecular dynamic simulations that most side chains within the domain reach an equilibrium state. However, residues that are essential for DNA …

Genetic Algorithms Applied To Biological Sequence Analysis, James Thompson Aug 2006

Genetic Algorithms Applied To Biological Sequence Analysis, James Thompson

Theses

Recently biological sequence databases have grown much faster than the ability of researchers to annotate such sequences. Techniques for computational analysis of biological sequences have grown in importance as researchers attempt to understand some features of these sequences. These features are computationally predicted through correlation with the presence of signals, which are measurable characteristics of a sequence correlated with the sequence feature. This study describes a general methodology for combining the information from signals in order to predict the presence of sequence feature. The methodology is based on Genetic Algorithm, which are a class of computational techniques that borrow concepts …

Evolutionary Implications On Contextualism, John Mark Gowan Jul 2006

Evolutionary Implications On Contextualism, John Mark Gowan

Theses

Contextual knowledge-attribution and natural selection are both processes that allow knowledge-attributions and organisms to evolve, respectively. The difference between Contextual knowledge-attribution and natural selection is the existence of intention: natural selection is an unintentional process that is possible because of random physical variations while Contextual knowledge-attribution is an intentional process that is possible because of random memetic variations. Evolutionary Contextualism, as a memetic theory, is the theory that knowledge-attributions evolve based upon unequal probabilities within a context created by falsifiable standards that are dependent upon attributer intentions. If Contextualism is a memetic theory that concerns knowledge, and memetic evolution is …

Two Contemporary Approaches To The Individuation Of Concrete Particulars: Why A Substance Theory Is A Stronger Account, Nicholas Paul Spitzer Jul 2006

Two Contemporary Approaches To The Individuation Of Concrete Particulars: Why A Substance Theory Is A Stronger Account, Nicholas Paul Spitzer

Theses

Throughout the history of philosophy, philosophers have explained the nature of those ordinary objects of common sense like dogs, cats, trees and people in many different ways. One of the problems that arise upon giving an account of the nature of these objects (philosophers call them concrete particulars) is the problem of individuation. The problem arise upon trying to explain what it is about the nature of a concrete particular, that makes it the very same thing as itself and not another? To put it another way, what is it about any individual concrete particular that makes it distinct from …

Two Degrees Of Intentionality: Approaching The Ascription Of Psychological Content In Non-Linguistic Creatures, Michael Joseph Ferreira Jul 2006

Two Degrees Of Intentionality: Approaching The Ascription Of Psychological Content In Non-Linguistic Creatures, Michael Joseph Ferreira

Theses

We often include intentional (psychological) states in the explanation of complex non-human animal behavior. How, if possible, should we characterize intentionality in other species without trivializing our own? I aim to develop a strategy, compatible with intentional realism, for approaching the ascription of intentionality in non-linguistic species. One way to approach the question, one rehearsed in multiple contexts, is to question the conditions under which conceptual mental representations might obtain in non-linguistic species. I follow a similar, but less developed strategy. I argue, following some recent literature, that it is likely that concepts split into (at least) two kinds. If …

Patterns Of Habitat Use By Primates In Eastern Ecuador, Seema Nayan Sheth Jun 2006

Patterns Of Habitat Use By Primates In Eastern Ecuador, Seema Nayan Sheth

Theses

Lowland tropical rain forests of western Amazonia are characterized by the most speciose primate communities in the Neotropics, immediately leading to the question of to what extent does niche partitioning by primate species serve as a mechanism to promote species co-existence. Because the primate assemblages that we observe today reflect a combination of ecological and evolutionary processes, this study examines habitat occupancy and its relationship to phylogeny and space in a diverse diurnal primate community in an undisturbed lowland rain forest of Amazonian Ecuador. Specifically, the following null hypotheses are explored as potential factors that shape community structure: (1) mean …

Feral Child: The Legacy Of The Wild Boy Of Aveyron In The Domains Of Language Acquisition And Deaf Education, Wayne Cayea

Theses

Language Acquisition has been hotly debated since Chomsky's theory of innate ability in the 1950s. Feral children. i.e.. wild children who grow up in extreme isolation, provide a unique opportunity to study the process of language acquisition. What we can learn can have a major impact on what and how we teach our young students, especially deaf - students whose language development may be delayed. Victor, the Wild Boy of Aveyron, a famous feral child, is the focus of this study. He was discovered in the French wilderness in 1800, after three to eight years alone in the forest. After …

Modeling And Optimization Of Biological Nutrients Removal In Wastewater Treatment Processes Considering Advanced Kinetic Modeling Techniques, Nawras Nabil Ai Ghazaly Jun 2006

Modeling And Optimization Of Biological Nutrients Removal In Wastewater Treatment Processes Considering Advanced Kinetic Modeling Techniques, Nawras Nabil Ai Ghazaly

Theses

In the field of wastewater treatment, there is an increasing demand to improve the effluent

quality especially if it is going to be discharged to surface water. Effluent discharged

to surface water should have minimum nutrients level (nitrogen and phosphorus) in order

to avoid eutrophication and the resulting algal blooms which deplete the water from the oxygen

needed by other plant and animal species. Moreover, there is a demand to reduce the chemical

consumption in the treatment processes and to depend as much as we can on the biological

Treatment methods in achieving the required effluent quality in terms of …

In this study, the customer storage tanks (CSTs) are taken into consideration in performing the extended period simulation. Each group …

Osteogenic Differentiation Of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells On Thin Film Tyrosine Derived Polycarbonates, Tamunotoyne Briggs May 2006

Osteogenic Differentiation Of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells On Thin Film Tyrosine Derived Polycarbonates, Tamunotoyne Briggs

Theses

Mesenchymal stem cells, harvested from adult bone marrow, are promising in the field of regenerative medicine because of the vast differentiation potential into various cell lines such as: osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and neurons. Osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) could be an important tool in the treatment of orthopedic deficiencies such as bone defects. The extent of in vitro human mesenchymal stem cell growth, adhesion, motility and differentiation into osteoblasts is a function of the material surface chemistry which is mediated by protein adsorption onto the surface. A library of tyrosine derived polycarbonates allows the tailoring of material …

Network Activity Arising From Optimal Diameters Of Neuronal Processes, Juliane Gansert May 2006

Network Activity Arising From Optimal Diameters Of Neuronal Processes, Juliane Gansert

Theses

Electrical coupling provides an important pathway for signal transmission between neurons. In several regions of the mammalian brain electrical synapses have been detected, and their role in the synchronization of neural networks and the generation of oscillations has been studied theoretically. Recently, it has been found that the amplitude of the postsynaptic potential is maximized for a specific diameter of the postsynaptic fiber.

In this thesis, the impact of the fiber's diameter on the success or failure of the action potential initiation and propagation is studied theoretically. Systems of two coupled neurons, as well as small networks, are investigated. The …

Finding Role Errors Of The Ncit Gene Hierarchy Using The Ncbi, Marc Oren May 2006

Finding Role Errors Of The Ncit Gene Hierarchy Using The Ncbi, Marc Oren

Theses

Due to the knowledge discovery process of gene information, details such as organism and chromosomal location should be known. Furthermore, the extensive biomedical research in genomics led to discovery of processes and diseases in which a gene plays a role. In the Gene hierarchy of the NCI Thesaurus (NCIT) such knowledge is represented by appropriate roles. However, upon review of the Gene hierarchy of the NCIT, many role errors are found. Realizing that such details are provided by another knowledge repository of NIH, the NCBI gene database, a methodology is presented to use NCBI to discover role errors for the …

Development Of A System To Measure Cardiac Function In The Drosophila Melanogaster Animal Model, Heather Anne Reinhardt May 2006

Development Of A System To Measure Cardiac Function In The Drosophila Melanogaster Animal Model, Heather Anne Reinhardt

Theses

Previous studies have shown that several genes are evolutionarily conserved from lower organisms to man, where a number of genes have been directly linked to cardiac function and disease. The Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit Fly) has a genome similar to humans and therefore has proven to be an important animal model to study the role of genetics in cardiac function and disease development. Fruit flies are an important basic science model because of the ease with which genes can be manipulated and quickly expressed due to the short lifespan of the fly. Although standard techniques exist to affect the genome of …

For some protein sequences their encoding nucleotide sequences can be found in their corresponding websites. However, for some protein sequences their encoding nucleotide sequences are missing.

The goal of this thesis is to. collect all nucleotide sequences for the protein sequences in SYSTERS and store them in a common database. There are two cases. The first case is that if the nucleotide sequences can …

Knowledge Based Structure Modeling Of The Third Hypervariable Region Of Antibodies, Kevin Galens May 2006

Knowledge Based Structure Modeling Of The Third Hypervariable Region Of Antibodies, Kevin Galens

Theses

Protein structure prediction has gained increased attention over the past decades in a wide range of biological disciplines. Creating an accurate visual model of a protein can aid in protein engineering; which has implications in the creation of therapeutic molecules as is the case with antibodies. The third complementarity determining region of the heavy chain of antibodies (CDR-H3) is known to show a large degree of variation in sequence and in length, and therefore has provided difficulties for structure prediction. By separating the CDR-H3 into two logical sections, the apex and base, and using a homology modeling techniques for each …

The Impact Of Genetic Variations In Bipolar Disorder, Lee Edsall May 2006

The Impact Of Genetic Variations In Bipolar Disorder, Lee Edsall

Theses

Bipolar disorder is a devastating illness that affects the quality of life for millions of Americans. The current diagnostic system depends on an extremely subjective interview and can frequently result in an incorrect diagnosis and ineffective treatment. An improved, biologically based, classification system requires a thorough understanding of the genetic basis of bipolar disorder. This understanding has been hampered by the difficulty in diagnosing patients and by the heterogeneity of the illness. The number of linkage analysis studies and lack of organization have also added to the challenges involved in understanding the biological basis of the disorder. The Bipolar Disorder …

Identifying The Largest Complete Data Set From Alfred, Mohamed Uduman May 2006

Identifying The Largest Complete Data Set From Alfred, Mohamed Uduman

Theses

ALFRED is a central and curated repository for allele frequency data for anthropologically defined human populations. To study and estimate the relationships and similarities between populations, researchers require a large and complete data set. However, the data set within ALFRED is not complete. Specifically, not all the populations in the database have been typed for all the polymorphisms. Mining ALFRED for the largest complete data set is equivalent to the 'Maximal Biclique' problem in graph theory. This is proven to be NP-Complete and no single algorithm can find the perfect solution in polynomial time. This project describes a heuristic (Largest …
