Content-Based Image Retrieval Using Deep Learning, Anshuman Vikram Singh
Content-Based Image Retrieval Using Deep Learning, Anshuman Vikram Singh
Theses
A content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system works on the low-level visual features of a user input query image, which makes it difficult for the users to formulate the query and also does not give satisfactory retrieval results. In the past image annotation was proposed as the best possible system for CBIR which works on the principle of automatically assigning keywords to images that help image retrieval users to query images based on these keywords. Image annotation is often regarded as the problem of image classification where the images are represented by some low-level features and the mapping between low-level features …

Principles And Applications Of Mechanical Dry Coating - Review And State-Of-The-Art, Sayani Bhaumik
Theses
Dry Coating of powders to form composite particulates has been firmly established and has garnered interest both in academia and industry due to its myriad applications. This thesis work is an attempt to map the progress of the dry coating technology from its incipient years in the '80s to the thriving practice in the present day. Dry coating is a relatively simple approach to coat powders with specific guest particles via mechanical means to produce composites with desired tailor-made properties, without the constraints of harmful emissions or huge capital investment. Composite particulates with enhanced flowability, high-temperature resistant properties, and modified …
Experimental Determination Of Solids Suspension With Angled Impeller In A Pharmaceutical Mixing Vessel, Yingxi Tang
Experimental Determination Of Solids Suspension With Angled Impeller In A Pharmaceutical Mixing Vessel, Yingxi Tang
Theses
Angled-mounted impellers are commonly used in a number of pharmaceutical industry applications, from laboratory reactors to full-scale tanks. In these systems, the impeller is not centrally and vertically mounted, as in most stirred vessels, but it enters the vessel, and is therefore immersed in the fluid, at an angle from the vertical. This arrangement provides some baffling effects that would not otherwise exist if the impeller was centrally mounted.
One common requirement for such systems is that they are capable of suspending small solids dispersed in the liquid. Therefore, it is critical to know the value of the minimum agitation …
An Extended Duration Operation For Solid Hollow Fiber Cooling Crystallization Method, Chi Jin
An Extended Duration Operation For Solid Hollow Fiber Cooling Crystallization Method, Chi Jin
Theses
As recently demonstrated by Chen et al. [1], the solid hollow fiber cooling crystallization method to achieve continuous polymer coating/encapsulation of submicrometer particles, has advantages of no problem with high pressure, easy scale-up and production of free-flowing coated particles. There is a concern whether this crystallization method can be applied for an extended duration coating process; it was not investigated in the previous study. Therefore, in order to examine this problem, in this work, the duration of the whole crystallization coating process has been greatly extended from 5 min to 60 min and 120 min. For the purpose of being …
Design, Construction And Characterization Of A Wind Tunnel, Chang Ge
Design, Construction And Characterization Of A Wind Tunnel, Chang Ge
Theses
The wind tunnel is the most fundamental test equipment for aircraft testing and studying aerodynamics. Because of the complexity of the test-subject's geometry, it is difficult to study the aerodynamic pattern simply based on theoretical calculations. Most of the aerodynamics experiments still use wind tunnels. The progress of the wind tunnel is highly related to the advancements in air crafts. Aircraft manufacturing has pushed the wind tunnel technology forward. Wind tunnels can be categorized by the wind speed limit differences, which are controlled by the mechanism of the driving methods, structure applications, etc. In this case, we built a small …

Unsupervised Gene Regulatory Network Inference On Microarray Data, Nidhi Radia
Theses
Obtaining gene regulatory networks (GRNs) from expression data is a challenging and crucial task. Many computational methods and algorithms have been developed to infer gene networks for gene expression data, which are usually obtained from microarray experiments. A gene network is a method to depict the relation among clusters of genes. To infer gene networks, the unsupervised method is used in this study. The two types of data used are time-series data and steady-state data. The data is analyzed using various tools containing different algorithms and concepts. GRNs from time-series data tools are obtained using the Time-delayed Algorithm for the …
Effect Of Impeller Submergence On Power Dissipation And Solids Suspension In Mixing Systems Equipped With Pitch-Blade Turbines, Yufeng Song
Theses
Mixing and dispersion of solids in a liquid is a process frequently encountered in the pharmaceutical industry and often conducted in cylindrical baffled tanks stirred by mechanical impellers. In operations where the liquid level is decreased (as often which emptying the tank) the process must be stopped when the solids are no longer suspended. In this work, the minimum agitation to suspend solids (Njs) when the liquid level was lowered, and the impeller submergence Sb changed as a result were determined for the case of a six-blade, pitch-blade turbine (6-PBT) impeller. The power consumed by the impeller …
Identifying Modifier Genes In Sma Model Mice, Weiting Xu
Identifying Modifier Genes In Sma Model Mice, Weiting Xu
Theses
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) involves the loss of nerve cells called motor neurons in the spinal cord and is classified as a motor neuron disease, it affects 1 in 5000-10000 newborns, one of the leading genetic causes of infant death in USA. Mutations in the SMN1, UBA1, DYNC1H1 and VAPB genes cause spinal muscular atrophy. Extra copies of the SMN2 gene modify the severity of spinal muscular atrophy. Mutations in SMN1 (Motor Neuron 1) mainly causes SMA (Autosomal recessive inheritance). SMN1 gene mutations lead to a shortage of the SMN protein and SMN protein forms SMN complex …
The Kinetics Of Drug Dissolution In Polymers During Hot-Melt Extrusion, Huayang Fang
The Kinetics Of Drug Dissolution In Polymers During Hot-Melt Extrusion, Huayang Fang
Theses
Extrusion has been a most important and widely used continuous process in polymer processing for over one hundred and fifty years. However, it has only been recently applied and adopted by the pharmaceutical industry to prepare solid oral dosage formulations with increased bioavailability for the poorly-water soluble drugs and controlled release characteristics for the water-soluble drugs. In pharmaceutical Hot-melt extrusion poorly water soluble drug particulates are mixed with water soluble polymer excipient particulates and fed in the extruder, where the polymer is melted, after which the drug particulates begin to dissolve into the polymer melt. Extrusion-generated mixing accelerates dissolution process. …

Both of such Titanium alloys show great potential utilization in bio-medicinal application, especially in implants, for its excellent biocompatibility, high tensile strength, and high elastic …
Mining News Content For Popularity Prediction, Moayad Alshangiti
Mining News Content For Popularity Prediction, Moayad Alshangiti
Theses
The problem of popularity prediction has been studied extensively in various previous research. The idea behind popularity prediction is that the attention users give to online items is unequally distributed, as only a small fraction of all the available content receives serious users attention. Researchers have been experimenting with different methods to find a way to predict that fraction. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of the previous work used the content for popularity prediction; instead, the research looked at other features such as early user reactions (number of views/shares/comments) of the first hours/days to predict the future …

Theses
As a foreigner in the United States, I need a passport, I-20, and visas to provide the answer to a very simple question: who am I? This body of work grew out of this urgent curiosity about identity. Meta-cultural and meta-biological factors like race, gender, and nationality give me a certain identity without me asking for it. However, I tend to forget the fact that my identity is negotiable and is constantly being negotiated around and inside me. At a certain point, I realize that in order to understand the man I have become, I need to re-encounter my journey …
Repurposing Vacant Lots For Stormwater Runoff Mitigation In Rochester, New York, Sandra Golberg
Repurposing Vacant Lots For Stormwater Runoff Mitigation In Rochester, New York, Sandra Golberg
Theses
The area of the US known as the Rust Belt had an economic boom in the early 1900’s, and cities expanded rapidly to accommodate bustling manufacturing industries. This area then experienced a significant loss of population due to the migration of manufacturing industries to other areas beginning in the 1970’s. Many lots have become vacant and many homes have been abandoned because of this significant population loss. Industrialization introduces large areas of impervious surfaces and disturbs natural soils and landcovers, resulting in extensive stormwater runoff. While economies have declined, the problem of stormwater runoff remains. To mitigate the cascading problems …
Water Hyacinth - The Green Potential, Ratchanon Keawmanee
Water Hyacinth - The Green Potential, Ratchanon Keawmanee
Theses
Aggressive invasion of floating water hyacinth has always been a big problem in Tropical countries, including Thailand. The ever growing amount of water hyacinth has polluted and block the flow of water in many rivers. A current solution for this problem is removal of water hyacinth from the rivers which basically harvest the plants from the rivers and dispose them someplace else. As stated, they are just plain and temporarily solutions, so such a problem still persists as time passes. My idea is to make use of what is so called "natural waste" and turn them into marketable goods which …
Neural Chimeras In The Huber-Braun Model With Abrams-Strogatz And Kuramoto Coupling Schemes, Tera Ashley Glaze
Neural Chimeras In The Huber-Braun Model With Abrams-Strogatz And Kuramoto Coupling Schemes, Tera Ashley Glaze
Theses
A chimera state occurs when a group of identical oscillators divides into two subgroups, one with synchronized activity, and one with unsynchronized activity. Found commonly in Abrams-Strogatz and in Kuramoto coupling, this state has been studied in many media, such as chemical, mechanical, and optical. Similar simulations have been investigated for media not as easily studied experimentally, such as neurons. The theoretical basis of the chimera state is still under study. Here, the chimera state is studied in context of the Huber-Braun model for neurons, with the two aforementioned coupling schemes. Forms of the chimera state different from the norm …

Optimal Packaging Of Mason-Pfizer Monkey Virus (Mpmv) Genomic Rna Depends On Conserved Long Range Interactions Between U5 And Gag Complementary Sequences, Rawan M. Khaleel Kalloush
Theses
Employing a combination of genetic and biochemical approaches, we have recently shown that the 5’ end of MPMV genome (from the first nucleotide in R up to 120 nt of Gag) contains a number of sequence and structural motifs important for MPMV gRNA packaging and dimerization. A distinguishing feature of the higher order structure of MPMV packaging signal RNA is two long-range interactions (LRI) between U5 and Gag complementary sequences, LRI-I and LRI-II, which are phylogenetically conserved among different MPMV strains. These LRIs have been suggested to play a role in stabilizing the RNA secondary structure of the 5’ UTR …
