Art Tales: Art As A Communicator Of New York State Folklore, Erin Claire Tobin

Theses

This thesis project focuses on the use of folktales as a starting point to explore texture and pattern. The artist was striving to create a visual communication of folktales. Using physical layers in the paintings to create spatial depth as well as to express the idea of the building of layers as a metaphor for the story of life, the artist engages the viewer to relate this to the idea that culture is built from many different layers of stories over time.

Lorem Ipsum, A Story About Words And Pictures: What They Can Do, And What They Can't, David Huth

Theses

Everything we understand about the world comes to us through, and can be captured by, the linguistic use of words and pictures. Or does it? This is a question that addresses the core function and purpose of visual communications design. The question is explored in this film thematically, narratively, and technically, by portraying a story about a person struggling to understand language and solve a unique, high stakes design problem: the library cataloging of an entire human life. This is a creative project that uses computer graphics design technology and the unique presentation of typographical design problems to provoke thought …

The Deceit Of Internet Hate Speech: A Study Of The Narrative And Visual Methods Used By Hate Groups On The Internet, Gina M. Albano

Theses

Intentional misinformation is a problem that has been documented in a variety of shapes and forms for thousands of years and continues to plague the American landscape. The advent and increasing usage of the Internet has created an additional venue through which intentional misinformation is disseminated, and many groups are taking full advantage of this new communication medium. Because the Internet allows anyone with web publishing skills to disseminate misinformation, it is often difficult for users to judge the credibility of the information. Hate groups understand this phenomenon and are taking full advantage of the Internet by publishing hate sites …

Delivering A Graphic Design Course Online: Simulating A Real Classroom Situation And Speculating What Technologies Can Ideally Offer In This Virtual Situation, Uttam Kokil

Theses

This thesis examines a new way to simplify online education and to simulate a real classroom situation. It explores how a graphic design class can be conducted online where the students from different geographical locations and faculty can interact instantaneously with the aid of video, chat and whiteboard. For the most part, the potential for Macromedia Flash Communication Server to deliver chat, whiteboard and video functionality are assessed. It is speculated that video images are slightly jerky among Modem users whereas sharp video images are obtained with high-speed Internet connection. The survey findings among the design students and faculty at …

Stuttering Awareness, Joshua Bodman May 2003

Stuttering Awareness, Joshua Bodman

Theses

This thesis project will provide information about stuttering and attempt to eliminate some of the stigmas attached to the disorder. By increasing awareness, more light will be cast on stuttering, eliminating some of the burden of disfluency. The disorder will no longer be a mystery if people understand that stuttering is composed of concrete thoughts, feelings and actions. A publicized campaign will dispel some of the negative views of this disorder and reduce the pressures that are created in different speaking situations. These stuttering awareness goals will be disseminated through a collection of design applications. The awareness campaign as presented …

Theses

This thesis examines the challenges of hypertext writers with respect to six aspects of writing: authority, audience, organization, document design, style and multimedia use. This study is primarily based on the theories presented in the three books-Jay David Bolter's Writing Space, George P. Landow's Hypertext 2.0 and Ilana Snyder's Hypertext. Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding May 2001

Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding

Theses

This thesis project is concerned with the role that graphic designers have in making learning materials more effective. It is focused on the need for instructional materials to reflect current advances in cognitive psychology and our society's definition of intelligence. Most instructional materials today are outdated and ineffective. Some reasons are political, others are socio-economic, and some fall within the scope of the designed environment. Learning materials, especially textbooks, designed before the 1980's have been designed without standards, and at a time when intelligence was seen as a narrow list of abilities.
