Isobaric Vapor-Liquid Equilibria System : Benzene, Chlorobenzene, Phenol, Larry Madestau May 1963

Isobaric Vapor-Liquid Equilibria System : Benzene, Chlorobenzene, Phenol, Larry Madestau

Theses

Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria were determined experimentally for the three binary systems benzene-chlorobenzene, benzene-phenol, and chlorobenzene-phenol; and for the corresponding ternary system benzene-chlorobenzene-phenol. Constants for the Chao modified Redlich-Kistler equations were calculated from the experimental data by the method of least squares. These constants were then used to predict vapor-liquid equilibria for the ternary system. The predicted values showed satisfactory agreement with those found experimentally.

A modified Ellis still was used for obtaining equilibrium data. Samples of vapor and liquid phases were analyzed by means of the F & M Model 720 vapor phase chromatograph. Benzene, chlorobenzene, and phenol used in …

The In Vivo Effects Of Hydrazines And Vitamin B6 On The Metabolism Of Gamma_Aminobutyric Acid, Miguel Angel Median May 1963

The In Vivo Effects Of Hydrazines And Vitamin B6 On The Metabolism Of Gamma_Aminobutyric Acid, Miguel Angel Median

Theses

The discovery of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in mammalian brain and its rigorous identification was reported in 1950 (1,2,3). Enzymatic experiments with brain acetone powder revealed that GABA was formed by the decarboxylation of glutamic acid and that the enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase, required pyridoxal phosphate as the co-factor (4,5). Radioactive tracer studies in vivo and in vitro with glutamic acid and glucose verfied the fact that the former was the precursor of GABA (6,7).

Program Evaluation And Review Technique, Anthony Immaculate Agresta Jun 1962

Program Evaluation And Review Technique, Anthony Immaculate Agresta

Theses

The problem of planning, controling and evaluating complex projects both engineering and non-engineering has existed as long as the projects themselves. In the past the approach of management to this problem has been one which was based heavily on the use of historical information. There have been very few attempts to predict and control the occurrence of the objective event of these projects.

This thesis deals with a review of this problem and a new approach to the planning, control, and evaluation of these complex projects. This new approach is the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) which was developed …

Extraction Of Technical Grade Lactic Acid With N-Butyl Alcohol, Joel Howard Kaplan Jun 1962

Extraction Of Technical Grade Lactic Acid With N-Butyl Alcohol, Joel Howard Kaplan

Theses

A possible step in a proposed industrial method for purifying and concentrating technical grade (44 per cent) lactic acid was investigated. The proposed method is the extraction of lactic acid from the crude grade by n-butyl alcohol, esterification of the extract by n-butyl alcohol and hydrolysis of the resultant purified ester to pure lactic acid. The extraction of lactic acid by n-butyl alcohol from the crude grade was the topic considered in this paper.

The extraction process was carried out at temperatures of 10.2°C, 25.0°C, 40.0°C and 60.00C using both U. S. P. lactic acid (85 per cent) and technical …

Jurisdictional Disputes Within The Construction Industry, Dominick Joseph Magarelli May 1962

Jurisdictional Disputes Within The Construction Industry, Dominick Joseph Magarelli

Theses

Work assignment disputes, known as jurisdictional disputes are common in the construction industry. They are not only costly but annoying as well, The construction industry has always been plagued with this type of dispute because each of its many craft unions regards certain types of work as a proprietary right. They jealously guard against any encroachment of their area of activity by other unions. Sometimes lines of demarcation between the various jurisdictions are not clear. Also, the development of new products and methods often brings with it clashes between unions each of whom claim exclusive right to the work assignment. …

Packed Bed Heat Transfer, Anthony William Sposaro May 1962

Packed Bed Heat Transfer, Anthony William Sposaro

Theses

The use of various published correlations to determine apparent thermal conductivities was found to give results of differing ma; magnitudes. For this reason when these values were utilized in the theoretical relationships proposed by McAdams:

tw-t2/tw-t1 = 0.692e-23.14X + 0.1312e-121.9X + 0.0535e-299.6X

in which X is defined as

X = (KaL/CpGoD2t)

For packed bed systems the results were found to be inconsistent.

In this investigation a dimensionless equation:

Ka/kg = 0.00105 (DpGo/εpμ)1.32

has been developed which permits the prediction of apparent thermal conductivities to air flowing through a 1 inch tube picked with glass …

Hypersensitization And Reciprocity Law Failure, Charles West Apr 1962

Hypersensitization And Reciprocity Law Failure, Charles West

Theses

Two sets of Super XX cut film strips were hypersensitized under varying conditions of hypersensitizing agent used, concentration of hypersensitizing solution and time of hypersensitizing. The strips were rapidly dried and exposed. One set was exposed with a high film plane illuminance for 5.0 seconds, and the second set was exposed with a low film plane illuminance for 10^4 seconds. The difference in exposure necessary to give a density of 1.50 for the strips of each set was used as a measure of the reciprocity law failure. From the H and D curves of each test a measure of the …

The Junior High School, Billy Joe Barnett

Theses

The appearance and growth of the junior high school in theUnited States reflects one of the most significant aspects of this country's attempt to provide the best possible educational program.for its teenagers, Not only has the junior high school proved of high value, but its influence upon school systems in which the junior high school organization is not found has been wide and marked. Among communities in which the eight-four plan of school organization prevails, many earmarks of junior high school are commonly found.

The junior high school, which emerged from the reorganizational movement of the late nineteenth century and …

Effect Of Elevated Temperature On Efficiency Of Corrosion Inhibitors, Walter Dzingala Jun 1961

Effect Of Elevated Temperature On Efficiency Of Corrosion Inhibitors, Walter Dzingala

Theses

An experimental program was set up to investigate the effect of temperature on the protection efficiency of various inhibitors of metal corrosion. Contrary to most studies, an appreciable amount of the work was done with the corrosive effect being determined on the metal specimens that were exposed first to the inhibitor, then to air at different temperature, and finally to the corrosive medium with no inhibitor present. The purpose being to determine whether the inhibitor treatment would provide a permanent protection for a metal surface or would it be necessary to furnish a continuous supply of the inhibitor to the …

Concepts Of Form And Content In Painting, Reuben Aldridge Hale Jr. Jan 1961

Concepts Of Form And Content In Painting, Reuben Aldridge Hale Jr.

Theses

This thesis is presented in conjunction with an exhibition of non-objective paintings. The exhibition, held in the Allen Gallery from July 15 to August 4, 1961, was a selection of paintings from those produced during graduate study at Southern Illinois University. It is the purpose of this thesis to illuminate, in some respects, the paintings of the artist.
To gain insight into the totality of the work of any particular artist, it is helpful to look into the influences and concepts behind the paintings. In the case of autonomous painting, the conscious ideas of an artist cannot completely explain the …

Thermodynamic Properties Of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, Lionel James Sirois Jun 1960

Thermodynamic Properties Of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, Lionel James Sirois

Theses

The thermodynamic properties of methyl isobutyl ketone (4-methy1-2-pentanone, hexone) have been determined for the saturated region from 32°F to the critical temperature, 569°F. Properties in the superheated region were determined for temperatures from 200°F to 2000°F and over a pressure range from 5 psia to 1000 psia. Enthalpies, entropies, and specific volumes are reported for both phases where applicable. The datum point for all calculations was zero enthalpy and entropy for a unit mass of saturated liquid at 32°F and 0.083 psia.

Pressure-volume-temperature relations were predicted using the equation of state of Martin and Hou.(6) This equation of state …

Esterification Of Technical Grade Lactic Acid, George John Swier

Theses

A step in the method for manufacturing a purified grade of lactic acid from the technical grade lactic acid (44%) was investigated. In this method, technical grade lactic acid was reacted with normal butyl alcohol, the water formed during esterification was azeotropically removed. The ester formed, was separated from the excess butanol by vacuum distillation. The final step, the hydrolysis of the distilled ester to a purified grade of lactic acid was not covered in this investigation.

In this study, several features are reported, which to the best of knowledge, appear in a publication for the first time. They are …

Behavior Change Through Training, Robert Walter Messerschmidt May 1960

Behavior Change Through Training, Robert Walter Messerschmidt

Theses

This thesis represents an investigation of attitude and behavior change as a result of human relations training, The elements of heredity and environment are proffered as a basis for attitude and behavior formation. It is denoted that these elements are also instrumental in subsequent development of adult behavior.

As noted in the literature, the term "individual differences" embodies the effect of virtually unique heredity and environmental conditions to which each person is exposed. These differences are also partly determined by the growth in developmental trends, which varies from individual to individual and from time to time.

The existence of individual …

Pressure Drop In Packed Beds Of Metal Raschig Rings, Donald William Davis Jun 1958

Pressure Drop In Packed Beds Of Metal Raschig Rings, Donald William Davis

Theses

Absorption towers packed with split metal Raschig rings have a higher void content than towers packed with ceramic Raschig rings of the same nominal size. This increased void volume is due to the thinner wall of the metal ring. This higher void space should also result in lower pressure drops than would be encountered with ceramic rings. The purpose of this research program was to determine the pressure drop-flow characteristics of this packing, and to develop suitable correlations for design of packed absorption towers.

Split metal Raschig rings of one-half and one inch nominal sizes were tested to determine their …

Theses

An attempt was made to regenerate a phenidone -hydroquinone developer. During the electrolysis the concentration of all the components remained constant with the exception of bromide, which was released as bromine from the anode. The possible use of the apparatus to remove bromide and reduce the replenishment rate in a continous processing system is suggested.

Electrolytic Treatment Of Spent Pickle Liquor, Luisito Giorgio Grenni Jun 1957

Electrolytic Treatment Of Spent Pickle Liquor, Luisito Giorgio Grenni

Theses

The problem of the recovery of values from waste sulfate pickling solutions by electrolytic methods, using permselective anion exchange membranes, is here considered from both the viewpoint of technical and commercial feasibility.

Three different types of anion exchange membranes, i.e. NALFILM-1, PERMUTIT and AMBERPLEX A-1, were tested in a laboratory cell, using an acid ferrous sulfate solution having a composition as close as possible to that of the average waste pickle liquor from steel mills. Curves giving a relationship between both iron plated out and sulfate anions transported to the anolyte as a function of the amount of current passed …

Rigid, Unplasticized, Polyvinyl Chloride Piping : An Engineering Material Study, James Patrick Kelleher Jun 1957

Rigid, Unplasticized, Polyvinyl Chloride Piping : An Engineering Material Study, James Patrick Kelleher

Theses

Rigid, unplasticized, polyvinyl chloride is one of several thermoplastic materials which can be made available on a reasonable, commercial basis in the form of pipe, as well as in other forms necessary for the assembly of a complete piping system.

These materials offer resistance to widely varying conditions of environment, light weight, relatively low cost, ease and economy of installation, self-insulating characteristics, minimum solid-deposit tendency, and low frictional losses. On the other hand, these materials have lower mechanical properties than most metals, and these properties are subject to wider variations as a function of temperature.

Of the thermoplastic piping materials …
