Laboratory Experiences In Listening Comprehension For English As A Second Language Program, Sima Mokhtari Dec 1980

Laboratory Experiences In Listening Comprehension For English As A Second Language Program, Sima Mokhtari

Theses

This study is undertaken in an attempt to help teachers to consider listening comprehension as a skill which is different from pronunciation, reading, and writing. Comprehending the second language is one of the most difficult tasks for the language learner and it is the most neglected skill in second language teaching. This neglect sterns from our ignorance about the nature of the process of listening comprehension, and from the lack of our knowledge about techniques on what and how to teach students to comprehend the spoken language.

The listening comprehension skills are separate from pronunciation and grammar. This paper presents …

Granularity: Investigating Equations That Convert (T) To (D), Frederick Catt Nov 1980

Granularity: Investigating Equations That Convert (T) To (D), Frederick Catt

Theses

An investigation was done on three published expanded equations, that convert (T) to (D). T. Celio, J. Altman and M. Abouelata published equations of the same form, but with differing constants. Their equations were derived by using an assumed square-wave transmittance trace. The investigation was to find the best predictor of (D) from (T) . Both practical and simulation tests were run. The density range was extended, to check for failure at both high and low densities. Standard granularity measurement procedures were followed as close as possible. Results, from the practical tests, showed Altman 's equation the best predictor of …

A Mathematics Course Of Study For The Fifth Grade Under-Achiever, Constance J. Pearson

Theses

This thesis, A Mathematics Course of Study for the Fifth Grade Under-Achiever by Constance J. Pearson, addresses the challenges of designing effective mathematics curricula for underperforming fifth-grade students. It critiques traditional teaching methods and advocates for a flexible, student-centered approach that adapts to individual learning needs. The curriculum model outlined emphasizes core mathematical skills, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and place value, while integrating creative teaching strategies to enhance engagement and comprehension.

The work explores historical shifts in math education, from rote memorization to discovery-based learning, and supports a balanced approach combining drill, activity-based, and meaningful teaching methods. …

Treatment Of The Second Degree Athletic Ankle Sprain, Michael P. Pratte Aug 1980

Treatment Of The Second Degree Athletic Ankle Sprain, Michael P. Pratte

Theses

The ankle injury is one of the most common athletic injuries. Proper treatment of the sprained ankle can avoid more serious complications and in sure early return of the athlete to activity. There exists a wide variety of medical opinion concerning treatment of the second degree ankle sprain. This divergence of medical opinion creates confusion on the part of the athlete, coach, and parent. This project has attempted to give coaches, physical education teachers , and parents a better understanding of the types of treatment available, where these therapies may be found, and which treatment may be most effective.

The Effect Of Development Temperature On Kodak Pr 10 Instant Print Product Using A Comparative System Modulation Transfer Function For Analysis, Jon E. Van Tassell Aug 1980

The Effect Of Development Temperature On Kodak Pr 10 Instant Print Product Using A Comparative System Modulation Transfer Function For Analysis, Jon E. Van Tassell

Theses

The effects of temperature of development upon the final image quality of Kodak PR lOr were investigated. Image quality was defined as a Modulation Transfer Function obtained using a Square Wave Log Periodic target for quantitative analysis. Analysis of Variance tables were used to separate experimental error from actual temperature related variability. With a confidence level of 99% the temperature of development was found to affect the Modulation Transfer Function of this product. With temperatures below 48 degrees the effect was greater than with temperatures above 78 degrees but not greater than 90 degrees. Also documented was a decrease in …

Images In Glass, Douglas Anderson

Theses

The nature of this thesis is to mate creative glass working and imaginative illustration. I intend to use a fictional manuscript and interpret its aesthetic meaning in glass. The glass will take a form similar to painting and drawing creating compositions with emotional intensity- I will use, as needed, all available techniques known to me in glass technology to compose these illustrations. I will present this partnership of glass and illustration in a readable format such as a book.

Design And Production Of A Comprehensive Graininess Scale For Use In Electrophotography, Susan B. Mueller Jun 1980

Design And Production Of A Comprehensive Graininess Scale For Use In Electrophotography, Susan B. Mueller

Theses

Methods were investigated and modeled to produce a graininess by density sample matrix. The graininess values were based on a model derived for certain imaging processes that has a high correlation to the subjective impression of graininess for nominally uniform image areas. After modeling several processes, a photographic technique was chosen and a matrix manufactured.

Instituting Management Changes Through Decentralized Budgeting In A Public Mental Health Setting, Wesley E. Wilber Jun 1980

Instituting Management Changes Through Decentralized Budgeting In A Public Mental Health Setting, Wesley E. Wilber

Theses

This study examines the adoption and implementation of a decentralized budgeting model within a public mental‑health institution, focusing on the administrative, financial, and organizational consequences of shifting from a centrally controlled budget framework toward local unit responsibility. Drawing on archival records, budget data, and administrative narratives from the institution’s transition period, the analysis highlights how decentralization altered decision‑making dynamics, cost behaviour, service orientation, and internal accountability structures. The decentralization initiative empowered individual units by giving them budgetary control over expenditures previously managed at the centralized level, thereby increasing their autonomy over staffing, program purchases, and resource reallocation. This shift brought …

Temperature Dependency Of The Group Interaction Parameters In The Agsm And Unifac Models For The Prediction Of Heats Of Mixing, Ignatius Okoronkwo Ojini May 1980

Temperature Dependency Of The Group Interaction Parameters In The Agsm And Unifac Models For The Prediction Of Heats Of Mixing, Ignatius Okoronkwo Ojini

Theses

A four-parameter group-contribution model (UNIFAC) has been developed for the prediction of heats of mixing of non-electrolyte mixtures. Both the UNIFAC and AGSM models are evaluated over a wide range of temperature dependencies of the group interaction parameters. The UNIFAC model has been chosen over the AGSM model and an optimum parameter-temperature relationship has been established.

Adopting the optimum temperature dependency, group inter-action parameters have been calculated using UNIFAC for the prediction of four types of mixtures: n-Alcohols/n-Alkanes; Benzene/n-Alkanes; Nitriles/n-Alkanes; Amines/n-Alkanes.

An Experimental Study Of Photopolymerization In A Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor, Songvit Setthachayanon May 1980

An Experimental Study Of Photopolymerization In A Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor, Songvit Setthachayanon

Theses

An experimental study was carried out on the control of CSTR by on-off regulation of light intensity for the photo-sensitized polymerization of styrene. The controllability of the reaction temperature, the advantages of operating at metastable states, and the molecular weights of the polymer formed were discussed. The influence of feed temperatures, sensitizer concentrations, and residence times on the reactor performance characteristics were also discussed. Experimental results showed that polymer formed at the metastable state had a higher average chain length and narrower molecular weight distribution than that formed at the low stable state. While increasing the residence time shifted the …

The Removal And Recovery Of Fluoborate From Plating Rinse Waters, Terrence A. Hunter May 1980

The Removal And Recovery Of Fluoborate From Plating Rinse Waters, Terrence A. Hunter

Theses

Fluoborate poses a problem to electroplaters when discharged in their wastestreams. Therefore, a method for removing fluoborate from rinse waters is necessary. An ion floatation technique using a surfactant was developed at N.J.I.T. to perform this job. However, this technique requires long time periods therefore other methods were investigated.

Ultrafiltration was investigated as a replacement for the ion floatation technique. It would cut down the time required for the fluoborate removal. Also, electrolysis and the addition of excess acetic acid were tried in an attempt to separate the fluoborate and the surfactant in the ultrafiltration retentate. This system was evaluated …
