Enhancing Learning Strategies Of First-Year Medical Students Through A Remedial Course At A Medical School In The Caribbean, Aruna Ullal, Ed.D., Andrea Wilson, Phd
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Remediation is a crucial factor for some students to succeed in a medical career. Well-designed remedial courses can enhance students’ learning skills and improve their study habits, promoting long-term retention and academic success. A medical school in the Caribbean has designed a remedial program called the Learning Enhancement Course, with the goal of supporting underperforming students in enhancing their study skills and gaining the competencies necessary to progress in their medical school journey. This quantitative study examined the influence of the remedial course on students’ learning and study skills after their participation in this structured course. We analyzed archival pre- …
Bootstrap Connectivity For Mobile Devices Without Sim Cards, Aguibou Barry, Tim Auer, Wendy Wang, Pankaj Kumar
Bootstrap Connectivity For Mobile Devices Without Sim Cards, Aguibou Barry, Tim Auer, Wendy Wang, Pankaj Kumar
Defensive Publications Series
In some geographies, the lack of ubiquitous WiFi can complicate electronic subscriber identity module (eSIM) adoption. In some geographies, carriers can mandate device original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to enable bootstrap connectivity, but eSIM-based bootstrap connectivity can be expensive for OEMs. This disclosure describes techniques that leverage extensible authentication protocol/ transport layer security (EAP-TLS) to enable secure connectivity of a mobile device to a cellular or satellite 5G network without an eSIM or physical SIM (pSIM). Following successful EAP-TLS authentication, the carrier enables traffic between the EAP-TLS-authenticated user equipment (UE) and the relevant service (based upon carrier-defined specific network policy). In …
Shadow-Channel Verification For Multi-Body Model Fusion: An Independent-Recompute Witness For Detecting Silent Value-Faults In Interpolated Language-Model Inference, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise
Shadow-Channel Verification For Multi-Body Model Fusion: An Independent-Recompute Witness For Detecting Silent Value-Faults In Interpolated Language-Model Inference, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes a system and method for verifying the intermediate quantities used in multi-body language-model fusion by means of an independent recomputation channel — a "shadow channel" — that runs parallel to the primary fusion pipeline. In multi-body fusion, a primary model (e.g., a transformer language model) is combined with one or more auxiliary bodies (e.g., an n-gram count model and a nearest-neighbour/datastore retrieval model) by interpolating their per-position probabilities. Conventional fusion consumes each body's reported probability directly and is therefore blind to two failure classes: (a) crash-faults, in which an auxiliary quantity becomes non-finite (e.g., a softmax …
The Vanishing Customer: A Framework For Analyzing Benefit–Burden Decoupling In Attention-Economy And Ai-Companion Transactions, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise
The Vanishing Customer: A Framework For Analyzing Benefit–Burden Decoupling In Attention-Economy And Ai-Companion Transactions, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes an analytical framework for identifying and evaluating benefit–burden decoupling in digital-service transactions, with particular application to attention-economy platforms and conversational AI-companion systems. The framework treats two observed phenomena — the relocation of the paying party from customer to product (wherein a user's attention, data, or disclosure is monetized while the user is denied the status of a served customer), and the relocation of responsibility from maker to user (wherein a provider retains the financial benefit of a design or deployment decision while attempting, via terms-of-service disclaimers and "sole-risk" framing, to shed the decision's downstream burdens) — as …
Managing A Plurality Of Parallel Batches, Saeed Alrahma, Michael Butler, Matthew Markwell
Managing A Plurality Of Parallel Batches, Saeed Alrahma, Michael Butler, Matthew Markwell
Defensive Publications Series
Limited accelerator memory on mobile devices may restrict the concurrent execution of parallel large language model workloads. The capacity of the key‑value cache may often constrain the number and length of these tasks. A workload scheduling method is disclosed to manage these memory constraints. When the cache capacity is reached, the state of a specific workload is serialized and moved to an alternative memory location. This process frees cache slots, which allows other parallel tasks to proceed. Once memory is vacated by completed tasks, the serialized state is restored to an accelerator cache for continued processing. This approach enables the …
Automated Cloud Service Optimization Via Simulated Transitions And Feature Parity Analysis, Paras Mamgain, Sridharshini Saravanan, Jaspreet Singh
Automated Cloud Service Optimization Via Simulated Transitions And Feature Parity Analysis, Paras Mamgain, Sridharshini Saravanan, Jaspreet Singh
Defensive Publications Series
Systems and methods can automate the analysis of cloud service consumption to assist with challenges in selecting between a-la-carte and bundled purchasing models, as manual evaluation may be slow and resource-intensive. A computational framework, which can operate on a computing device such as a server or personal computer, may leverage a large language model to ingest and analyze diverse data sources, for example, billing information, system logs, and service documentation. The system can simulate the financial and operational impact of transitioning to a bundled service, using semantic reasoning to assess functional equivalence beyond simple keyword matching. This automated evaluation process …
United States V. Alfonso: The Eleventh Circuit's Choice To Follow The Tide Of Other Circuits In Deciding What Constitutes The High Seas, Jaidin Winsor
United States V. Alfonso: The Eleventh Circuit's Choice To Follow The Tide Of Other Circuits In Deciding What Constitutes The High Seas, Jaidin Winsor
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
In United States v. Alfonso, three appellants challenged the constitutionality of the assertion of subject matter jurisdiction by the United States over a vessel involved in illicit drug smuggling activity within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Dominican Republic. On appeal the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit rejected this challenge. The decision made by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals followed the approach taken explicitly by the Fourth Circuit and indirectly by the First and Second Circuits. This decision affirmed the expansive reach of United States territorial jurisdiction and is likely to encourage other cCircuits …
Should I Stay Or Should I Go? The National Flood Insurance Program And Where We Go When The Next Storm Hits, Kevin Fitzpatrick
Should I Stay Or Should I Go? The National Flood Insurance Program And Where We Go When The Next Storm Hits, Kevin Fitzpatrick
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
In Spring, Texas, there is a house that has flooded twenty times due to heavy rain and flooding, resulting in National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) payouts totaling over $912,000 to cover the repairs. This house’s current value is $42,000, so the payouts have dwarfed its value by over nineteen times. The story of this home is indicative of an ongoing crisis regarding the NFIP, but also a larger crisis of how we manage the risks of flooding in the United States. Flooding causes more damage in the United States than any other severe weather-related event, costing an average of $5 …
"Tac-Ing" On Coherence: Achieving Sustainable Baltic Sea Fisheries Management By Hooking Precautionary Science And Greater Transparency In Eu Total Catch Negotiations, Patrick Seroogy
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
This article argues that what makes the difference in success between these two regimes is how strictly the scientific advice underlying catch limits the advice is adhered to, and the influences allowed unto decisionmakers in the catch limit negotiation process. Whereas the United States uses the scientific advice about the MSY as a strict upper limit in determining annual catch limits, the EU does not. This allows stakeholders in the EU’s CFP governance, in particular fishing industry actors, to influence regulators to raise TACs above adequately precautionary levels in the name of “balancing” sustainable fishing with short-term economic interests. The …

Alaska's Hidden Gems: Advocating For The Protection Of Deep-Sea Corals, Both In The Courtroom And Beyond, Lauren Beizer
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
Coral reefs are ecologically, financially, and aesthetically one of the world’s greatest resources. Off the coast of Alaska, many unique species of deep-sea cold-water corals exist and provide various public health benefits, contribute vital ecosystem functions to their surrounding environment, and serve as economic tourist attractions. Alaska’s corals reefs are exceedingly valuable to the earth due to their overall ecological value. However, these unique coral species significantly lack state and federal protections–which have recently been under consideration in several lawsuits at the federal level. American Oceans Campaign v. Daley and Oceana, Inc. v. National Marine Fisheries Service et al., are …

A Response To China'a "Legal Assessment Of U.S. Views On "Freedom Of Navigation", Raul Pete Pedrozo
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
In August 2025, the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA) conducted a legal assessment of U.S. views on freedom of navigation. CIMA concluded that U.S. views on freedom of navigation lack “a basis in international law,” “seriously distort[] the interpretation and development of international law,” and embody “distinct illegality, unreasonableness, and double standards.” Part 1 of the assessment provides an overview of U.S. views on freedom of navigation. Part 2 “analyzes the gaps between U.S. perceptions of navigational rights and related practices and the rules of international law.” Part 3 “analyzes the legality of U.S. restrictions on the rights of …
Rape And Sexual Assault On The High Seas: A Case Of Murky Jurisdiction, Linny Kit Tong Ng
Rape And Sexual Assault On The High Seas: A Case Of Murky Jurisdiction, Linny Kit Tong Ng
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
Rape and sexual assault on the high seas present a complex, dual-faceted challenge encompassing both legal and socio-cultural dimensions. The high seas are marked by jurisdictional ambiguity. International law assigns jurisdiction to the flag State of the vessel. However, many vessels are registered to States lacking adequate legal frameworks or the capacity to address such crimes effectively. While international law does allow for intervention by other States under certain principles of jurisdiction, the lack of legal clarity and political will often results in hesitation from non-flag States, except for the United States. This hesitance leaves victims without recourse. This Article …
Alternative Marine Fuels And Mrv Liability Under Unclos Part Xii, Andrey Chernov
Alternative Marine Fuels And Mrv Liability Under Unclos Part Xii, Andrey Chernov
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
Shipping’s decarbonization depends not only on adopting alternative fuels but also on the reliability of the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems that underpin compliance. Ammonia, hydrogen, methanol, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) each introduce distinctive risks of error at the stages of certification, custody transfer, onboard measurement, and verification. At the same time, maritime law is increasingly data-driven. The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) depend on reported fuel-use data, while the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) and FuelEU Maritime Regulation impose direct financial penalties for inaccurate reporting. Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Drug-coated balloons are an emerging strategy for coronary revascularization. Despite their increasing use, the comparative efficacy of sirolimus- versus paclitaxel-coated balloons (SCB vs PCB) remains uncertain. This updated meta-analysis evaluated clinical and angiographic outcomes of SCB and PCB in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect was performed on August 28, 2025. Studies directly comparing SCB and PCB were included. The primary endpoint was target lesion failure (TLF), which was defined as cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction (TVMI), or target lesion revascularization (TLR). On follow-up angiography, secondary endpoints consisted of minimal lumen diameter (MLD), …

Mental Health And Psychosocial Well-Being Of Domestic Workers In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania: Why It Matters And Why We Should Make It A Priority, Magolanga Shagembe
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
This phenomenological study explores the mental health and psychosocial well-being of domestic workers aged 15–18 years in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory and Erikson’s psychosocial development theory, the study examines how domestic workers negotiate self-acceptance, personal growth, purpose in life, quality of relationships, environmental control, autonomy and resilience within unequal labor and care arrangements. Data were generated through in-depth interviews with 29 domestic workers and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that mental health and psychosocial well-being among domestic workers are shaped through complex interactions between structural vulnerability, interpersonal relationships, migration experiences, economic necessity, and future …

Becoming Modern: Households’ Electricity Use And Coping With Power Outages In Post-Socialist Dar Es Salaam, Emanuel Lukio Mchome
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Since its invention in the 1880s, electricity has been regarded as a pervasive driver of modern life. As scholars have shown elsewhere, ideas of modernity have influenced the provision and use of electricity in cities across the globe. By and large, scholars have examined electricity-modernism in terms of the construction of high-tech electric infrastructure by major actors. Those who have studied power failures This article examines electricity-modernism from the perspective of everyday electricity use and the experience of power outages, a lens rarely used by scholars. It draws from oral history interviews and archival sources to show how ideas of …
Beyond The “Him-Her-Ing” Dichotomy: Unpacking Gendered Power Logics In Tanzanian Public Administration, Furaha Julius
Beyond The “Him-Her-Ing” Dichotomy: Unpacking Gendered Power Logics In Tanzanian Public Administration, Furaha Julius
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Despite decades of policy commitment to gender equity in Tanzania, substantive inequality within public administration endures. This study moves beyond quantifying women's underrepresentation to investigate the discursive and performative mechanisms that sustain a gendered power logic, termed him-her-ing. Situated within post-structural feminist theory and drawing on qualitative data from 21 in-depth interviews and a critical review of policy documents, this paper reveals how administrative practices—from leadership norms to routine task allocation—continuously reproduce a binary that privileges masculine-coded authority. Findings demonstrate that ostensibly neutral bureaucratic procedures, religious and customary influences, and informal patronage networks coalesce to marginalize feminine subjectivities, even within …

Medicalisation And The Practice Of Labour Augmentation In Mwanza, Tanzania, Latifa Abdulla Mohamed, Richard Sambaiga, Karen Marie Moland, Siri Lange
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Since the late 1900s, maternal health has increasingly been medicalised as a result of growing global concerns about poor maternal outcomes. An example of this medicalisation process is the use of oxytocin for labour augmentation. This practice of administering oxytocin to shorten the duration of labour is increasingly questioned. Feminist scholars have often questioned the routine use of oxytocin, depicting it as unnecessary and may constitute inappropriate use of the drug that undermines women’s autonomy and contributes to negative birth experiences. However, these feminist arguments overlook individual agency and the complex ways in which actors encounter and interact with oxytocin …

Methodological approach adopted is qualitative research design with integration of interview, observation and pertinent hotel statistics in comparing …
Public Perception Of Community Policing In Tanzania, Bernadeta Killian, William John Walwa
Public Perception Of Community Policing In Tanzania, Bernadeta Killian, William John Walwa
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Community policing is widely recognized as a viable means to address increasing security challenges. However, security problems in Tanzania have increased even though the police force has formalized and implemented a community policing structure called Ulinzi Shirikishi (participatory security) during the past 20 years. In this paper, both qualitative and quantitative methods are applied to analyse the community perception of Ulinzi Shirikishi to determine its viability. Located in the concept of social capital, it reveals that even though the police and government have favoured the use of Ulinzi Shirikishi to organize security, it is not the most preferred security structure …

Conservation Education And The Cultivation Of Environmental Responsibility: Case Studies From Sri Lanka, Jody Miller, Pasindu Dilshan Abegunawardhana
Conservation Education And The Cultivation Of Environmental Responsibility: Case Studies From Sri Lanka, Jody Miller, Pasindu Dilshan Abegunawardhana
International Journal on Responsibility
Conservation education encompasses effective pedagogical practices that enhance knowledge of the environment and foster responsible environmental actions. In addition to building an informed citizenry, conservation education is shaped by theoretical stances about the components necessary to cultivate environmental responsibility among participants and their communities. Highlighting three of our own conservation education projects in Sri Lanka as case studies, we draw from research and debates about environmental responsibility to illustrate the incorporation of environmental engagement and responsibility into these efforts, and the difficulties that arise in doing so. Sri Lanka is one of eight global biodiversity hotspots prioritized for conservation intervention. …
Khirbat Jābir: The Sculptured Decorations From The Bathhouse, Rivka Gersht
Khirbat Jābir: The Sculptured Decorations From The Bathhouse, Rivka Gersht
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
The excavation of the bathhouse at Khirbat Jābir yielded twelve marble items: a female head and eleven architectural members; among them a small Corinthian capital, a bracket ornamented with a lion head, a richly decorated small pediment and a champlevé revetment plaque. All twelve items were found out of their original display context; almost all are reused spolia or recycled pieces. The workmanship of the recycled items indicates that the craftsmen employed at the Khirbat Jābir bathhouse were skilled stone carvers but had no experience in shaping figural images. The rather good workmanship of the capital and the champlevé revetment …
Khirbat Jābir: A Late Byzantine Bathhouse, An Early Islamic Building And Ottoman-Period Remains / ח'ירבת ג'אבר: בית מרחץ משלהי התקופה הביזנטית, מבנה מהתקופה האסלאמית הקדומה ושרידים מהתקופה העות'מאנית, Orit Segal
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
Excavations at Khirbat Jābir in Zikhron Ya‘akov revealed three strata (III–I). The earliest Stratum III yielded a well-preserved bathhouse dated to the late Byzantine period (sixth–seventh centuries CE), likely a public complex lavishly decorated with marble elements, which served a small, well-established community comprising several households in the area. In Stratum II, dated to the beginning of the Early Islamic period, the bathhouse was converted into a manor house or a farmhouse. Its plan was slightly altered with the construction of new walls, and its rooms were paved with stones robbed from the original phase of the bathhouse. The latest …

Phenomenological Analysis Of Trust In Science For The Design Of Ai-Based Health And Social Policies, Kochav Koren
Phenomenological Analysis Of Trust In Science For The Design Of Ai-Based Health And Social Policies, Kochav Koren
All Duquesne Faculty Scholarship
The promises of artificial intelligence (AI) as a solution to challenges facing health systems increasingly link technological innovation with improvements in efficiency and access. However, the legitimacy of AI-supported health policies depends not only on scientific competence but also on public trust in scientific institutions. Using data from the international Trust in Science Project (71,922 respondents across 68 countries), this study analyses multidimensional trust and communication ecologies to reconstruct relational configurations of trust, termed ‘Figures of Relevance’. Findings reveal that whilst scientific competence is widely recognised, perceptions of institutional openness vary markedly, shaping heterogeneity in trust. The study identifies four …
