Awareness And Growth In An Art Therapy Practice, Gong Shu Sep 1979

Awareness And Growth In An Art Therapy Practice, Gong Shu

Theses

This culminating project explores the role of awareness in personal growth within the context of art therapy. Drawing from phenomenological psychology and Taoist philosophy, the author argues that every individual possesses an innate potential for self-actualization, which can be fully realized through heightened awareness. However, various psychological and cultural blocks—such as repression, trauma, social conditioning, and attachment to past or future experiences—often obstruct this awareness, impeding personal growth and creative functioning.

Art therapy is proposed as a dynamic method for reestablishing awareness by bringing unconscious or suppressed emotions and experiences into explicit focus through the creative process. The paper emphasizes …

An Examination Of The Interface Between Cross-Cultural Trainers And The Business Community In The United States, From The Perspective Of The Trainer, Alexander Patico Jun 1979

An Examination Of The Interface Between Cross-Cultural Trainers And The Business Community In The United States, From The Perspective Of The Trainer, Alexander Patico

Theses

This paper is the product of a particular stage in its author's professional and intellectual development . Its purpose is to use the special vantage point of a (relatively) disinterested observer, in order to form a novel picture of a particular population, comprised of those persons who are engaged in cross-cultural training--more especially, those who, as outside consultants , seek or maintain a clientele among members of the U.S. business community. I believe it likely that this viewpoint could not as readily be taken by one who is already fully involved in the daily practice of cross-cultural training.

Every effort …

An Investigation Of The Emotional Connotations Of Printing Types, Michael Blum May 1979

An Investigation Of The Emotional Connotations Of Printing Types, Michael Blum

Theses

This thesis addresses itself to the problem of understanding the emotional connotations of printing types. It is hypothesized that there is a model useful in predicting reactions to a given type style based on atmosphere value and usage. The majority of the literature on this subject is nonempirical. It is characterized by the author's stating their opinions with little or no attempt to validate them. The empirical literature shows that there is an emotional connotation associated with particular type faces. These studies have not shown, however, the importance of this connotation in terms of appropriate choice of type faces . …

Testing Communicative Competence: A New Approach Based On Discourse Analysis, Margaret B. Silver May 1979

Testing Communicative Competence: A New Approach Based On Discourse Analysis, Margaret B. Silver

Theses

This thesis proposes a new method for assessing communicative competence among ESL learners by using discourse analysis as the foundation for a placement test. Margaret B. Silver critiques conventional evaluation tools—such as the Ilyin Oral Interview, the STEL grammar test, and cloze procedures—arguing that they fail to measure the full range of linguistic and sociolinguistic abilities necessary for real-world communication. These traditional assessments, while helpful in measuring grammatical knowledge, overlook important features such as pronunciation, intonation, kinesics, and the ability to convey meaning in context.

Silver’s approach draws on discourse analysis to evaluate how students actually use language in unscripted …

A Study Of The Emotional, Psychological, And Physical Factors Found To Exist In The Environment Of Three Fifth Grade Classrooms, Carolyn A. Timm

Theses

This thesis investigates the emotional, psychological, and physical factors found within three distinct fifth-grade classroom environments. The study aims to observe and interpret the differences and similarities between three specific educational models: the "Traditional Classroom," characterized by teacher-directed instruction and subject mastery; the "Transitional Classroom," which acknowledges student responsibility but remains largely formal and teacher-oriented; and the "Open Classroom," which promotes active student involvement and decision-making. Central to this study is the author's definition of curriculum as a continuous social process that aids student awareness and personal growth, rather than strictly an academic process.

The research methodology utilized a self-designed …

The Myth Of Death And Rebirth: Its Manifestation In Contemporary Psychology, Randy Ring Apr 1979

The Myth Of Death And Rebirth: Its Manifestation In Contemporary Psychology, Randy Ring

Theses

The thesis, "The Myth of Death and Rebirth: Its Manifestation in Contemporary Psychology," explores the pervasive concept of death and rebirth across historical, religious, and psychological contexts. Beginning with the idea's presence in ancient mythologies like the Osiris myth and Eastern religious beliefs, the thesis highlights how these cultural narratives framed death not as an end but as a necessary transition to renewal. It emphasizes the symbolic role of death/rebirth rituals in premodern societies, where they marked transformative life stages and spiritual initiation.

The work transitions into examining modern psychology, particularly the contributions of Carl Jung and others who identified …

Theses

This thesis by Stuart Wallace presents a comprehensive proposal for a treatment approach and residential environment specifically tailored for female alcoholics, with a unique emphasis on accommodating women who are also mothers with young children. The document explores the distinct characteristics and treatment needs of female alcoholics, noting their underrepresentation in traditional recovery facilities and the compounded challenges they face, such as co-occurring mental health …

Art Therapy For Emotionally Disturbed Children: Clay And Media Dimension Variables, Wendy Wirth Jan 1979

Art Therapy For Emotionally Disturbed Children: Clay And Media Dimension Variables, Wendy Wirth

Theses

This thesis investigates the application of art therapy for the evaluation and treatment of emotionally disturbed children, with a specific focus on the use of clay and Media Dimension Variables (MDV). The author posits that clay is an exemplary medium for therapeutic intervention due to its plasticity, three-dimensional nature, and capacity to range from resistive to fluid states. The study adopts Kagan’s (1969) MDV system to structure therapeutic interventions, categorizing art activities by three distinct variables:

  • Structure: The extent of guidelines or controls (High vs. Low).

  • Media Quality: The inherent properties of the material (Resistive vs. Fluid).

  • Task Complexity …

Abused Wives, Predictors Of Leaving: Research And Theory, Sandra Schoonover-Kump Jan 1979

Abused Wives, Predictors Of Leaving: Research And Theory, Sandra Schoonover-Kump

Theses

This research examines the psychological and sociological variables that predict whether an abused wife will leave or remain with an abusive partner. The author evaluates four primary theoretical frameworks: masochism theory, learned helplessness theory, modeling theory, and intrafamily victimization theory. To test hypotheses generated by these theories, in-depth interviews were conducted with fifty randomly selected clients from a center for abused women in St. Louis.

The study identifies three major factors that significantly predict an abused wife’s decision to leave:

  • Severity of Injury: Wives who left were more severely injured by their partners than those who stayed.

  • Fear of …
