Management Training In Small Business, Harry L. Bargholz May 1987

Management Training In Small Business, Harry L. Bargholz

Theses

Human Resources Professionals are often faced with the issue of "the need for and usefulness of management training." In addition, small business people believe that the needed training is unwanted and, in somecases, impossible to deliver. On the other side of the issue, training supporters point to the need for knowledge, the constant obsolescence of learned skills and the highly competitive nature of the marketplace.

The argument continues that whereas managers in larger firms may be able to afford numerous in-house training programs or be able to send employees to assorted workshops and conferences, the manager in a small enterprise …

Management Controls And Modeling With Personal Computers (Pcs) For Material Procurement Within The Department Of Defense (Dod), Stefano Coppola

Theses

As an inevitable fallout of the microcomputer explosion, micro-to-mainframe links have been praised as an effective means of satisfying microcomputer users who insist for more processing power and less dependence on mainframe data processing. Personal Computers used to emulate terminals offer local storage capabilities as well as financial analysis and graphics.

Using a Personal Computer, Lotus 123, and a simulated PC-Link, a management control system was designed to satisfy the Department of Defense Instruction (DODI) 7000.2 for material procurement.

The resulting model provides both the Government and the contractor's management control system with a reliable, timely, and auditable system that …

A Study Of White-Collar Clerical Productivity : Composition, Issues And Implications For Human Resource Planning, Sheila Devereaux May 1987

A Study Of White-Collar Clerical Productivity : Composition, Issues And Implications For Human Resource Planning, Sheila Devereaux

Theses

During the past decade, there has been a growing concern and focus over declining American productivity. Declining productivity requires long-range thinking, and fundamental changes on the part of government, labor and management.

One of the major contributors identified is the labor force. What has gone unmeasured for years is the white-collar clerical workforce. The service sector has become the most dominant area where clerical workers have increased, consequently, productivity issues have become a top priority.

Management must assess the implications of losses in turnover, absenteeism, performance lag, and morale that affects bottom-line profits. Management is under pressure to develop action …

Human Resource Planning For Mergers And Acquisitions, Thomas Jide Fiki May 1987

Human Resource Planning For Mergers And Acquisitions, Thomas Jide Fiki

Theses

When a firm is acquired or merged, everyone feels shaken.

When organizations merge, the people in them are touched by several real and poignant issues, with each issue having the potential for lowering morale and productivity. When mergers or acquisitions fail, either by falling short of stated objectives or more disastrously - by divestiture - a chief culprit is often inadequate or nonexistent human resource planning.

A solid people plan - which takes into account what and how to communicate before and during a merger not only helps retain a semblance of order and direction within the company facing a …

Construction Labor And Productivity : Productivity Improvements, Stavros C. Nicolaou May 1987

Construction Labor And Productivity : Productivity Improvements, Stavros C. Nicolaou

Theses

Construction productivity has been on the decline in the last decade. Although an important factor in the nation's economy, productivity of construction labor has been given little attention over the years. A review of the literature dealing with construction was performed that revealed the importance of the declining productivity as well as the confusion among construction managers and labor leaders as to what productivity is all about and how it can be improved. It has been found also, that construction labor motivation, which is the most important factor in improving productivity, is almost nonexist. Very few construction companies employ any …

High Tech Transition And The Organization, Chetan H. Shah May 1987

High Tech Transition And The Organization, Chetan H. Shah

Theses

The future outlook of any corporation depends upon the resourcefulness of those who manage the planning and operating functions of the business. Time and accuracy are two critical criteria in effective managerial reports for decision making. The electronic computer is a welcome addition into the industry. While its applications to payroll, accounting, sales, and inventory have been extensive, computing has nevertheless been criticized. This study concentrates on determining the impact computing has had on the managers and especially on the people working in the organization from clerks to the top level management.

While an investigation of the existing literature was …

An Investigation Of Quantification Of Image Quality With Respect To Screen Ruling On The Appearance Of Multicolor Print, Yi-Sheng Lu May 1987

An Investigation Of Quantification Of Image Quality With Respect To Screen Ruling On The Appearance Of Multicolor Print, Yi-Sheng Lu

Theses

Using a finer screen ruling will result in an improved final image quality in the color printing process. Studies have shown that beyond certain screen frequencies any further increase in the number of lines per inch has negligible benefit on multicolor process printing when using the half-tone printing precess. The objective of this research is to quantify the image quality of multicolor process printing by comparing the results of using several different screen rulings. The final image quality was subjectively evaluated based on the appearance of otherwise identical reproductions with the only difference being the screen ruling. The results of …

A Study Of The Discernibility Of Electrophotostatic Copied Typestyles As Compared With Non-Electrophotostatic Copied Typefaces, Laura A. Melchionne May 1987

A Study Of The Discernibility Of Electrophotostatic Copied Typestyles As Compared With Non-Electrophotostatic Copied Typefaces, Laura A. Melchionne

Theses

This paper reports the results of an investigation into the discernibility of seven typefaces when overlayed by 15 different gauges brought into contact with each type face. Discernibility was tested under two conditions; standard (original typeset words) and electrophotostatically copied (second generation copies of the original typeset words) . The question that this investigation was attempting to answer was whether or not certain typefaces are more discernible after electrophotostatic copying than other typefaces. The seven typefaces were chosen because they have a known aesthetic preference that can be catergorized in three groups; most preferred, inbetween and least pre ferred. Preference …

The Computer As A Tool In The Ethical Development Of Primary School Children, Nancy B. Landau May 1987

The Computer As A Tool In The Ethical Development Of Primary School Children, Nancy B. Landau

Theses

When I first thought about my thesis topic at the end of last year, I had a very different concept from what eventually developed into this project. My original intention, that of using the computer as an educational tool in the ethical and social development of primary school children, has remained the same. The changes occurred in my methods of achieving this intention. My rationale for promoting the computer as an educational resource is manifold. For example, the world that these children will be entering as adults will be entirely computerized and automated. This next generation must have more than …

Computer Imagery And Creative Energy, Linda K. Saxton May 1987

Computer Imagery And Creative Energy, Linda K. Saxton

Theses

During the creative process energy becomes manifest through some form, be it nature, people, thought, or object. Individuals can expreience and absorb this energy directly through awareness of the subtle energy body and by developing its inner technology or system of energy centers and channels for the purpose of revitalizing body and mind and for transforming consciousness. It was my intent in this thesis to develop a videotape that would extend knowledge about, provide an experience of, and be an expression of creativity as the flow and manifestation of higher creative energy, higher referring to levels of refinement, the highest …

An Investigation Of The Performance Of Gray-Component Replacement, Melissa Berry Tolmie May 1987

An Investigation Of The Performance Of Gray-Component Replacement, Melissa Berry Tolmie

Theses

Members of the graphic arts industries are slowly becoming aware of undercolor reduction techniques used in the attempt to help stabilize high speed wet printing. Undercolor removal is a color correction method which follows this line of thought as it reduces the amount of ink coverage by the process-color inks and increases ink coverage of the black printer in the darker neutral areas of a reproduction. The advantages realized by this technique are carried even further with gray-component replacement (GCR) . GCR removes the process color inks that make up a dark tone and replaces them with black ink in …

Alternatives To Lay Off, Davidson Nwaneri Okere Jan 1987

Alternatives To Lay Off, Davidson Nwaneri Okere

Theses

In the recent years, there have been some changes in the American corporate life. These changes have been occasioned by some external factors which adversely affect the profitability of the companies. In order to address this problem, many corporations have resorted to cutbacks which more often than not, affect a great bulk of the human resources.

The purpose of this study therefore, is to explore the strategies which companies could use, rather than lay off, during business downturns; and still remain competitive and profitable.

Chapter one of this study focuses on what companies should do to help the affected workers …

Stress And Today's Working Woman, Tommie Mae Byers Jan 1987

Stress And Today's Working Woman, Tommie Mae Byers

Theses

The eighth wonder of the world is fast becoming the great American job machine The employment rate has declined in most industrial nations while 20 million jobs have been created in the U. S. during the past 10 years. The principal reason for this rise in job placements is the large influx of women into the labor force.

Two-thirds of the jobs created over the past decade have been seized by women. The post-industrial environment which has produced an extensive number of service-type businesses has substantially opened the job market for women. Financial experts will contend that an expanding labor …

A Null-Balance Visual Densitometer, Ramon P. Baez

Theses

This thesis deals with the development of a Visual Densitometer, for measuring transmission density, called a "Null-Balance Visual Densitometer". This is a simple instrument made using a calibrated continuous tone negative step wedge. It was used for measuring continuous tone reference patches as used for process control of color separations, in place of an electronic densitometer. The measurements were made by a comparison between the control step wedge and the samples in close proximity over a light table. The basis for this instrument is the human eye's ability to differentiate between two areas of brightness in close proximity. The study …

St. Charles County Juvenile Court Diversion Programs, Charles W. Hortmeier Jan 1987

St. Charles County Juvenile Court Diversion Programs, Charles W. Hortmeier

Theses

It has been theorized that the less formal and penetrating a youngster's contact with the Juvenile Justice System, the smaller his or her likelihood of continued delinquency. Based on this premise, known as labeling theory, the Juvenile Court of St. Charles County established several "diversion " programs to curb delinquent conduct among juvenile offenders.

This thesis was an in-depth study of these programs' effects on recidivism rates among juvenile delinquents. Court records spanning a period of 3 years were reviewed, providing the data for this research. The subjects studied were 15-year-old delinquents treated in one of three diversion programs in …
