Forty clients from the general context of the "recovery community" were recruited to fill out an eleven item Revised Touch in Therapy Survey. Participants also gave narrative responses to a single open-ended question asking what meaning their touch experience held for them. The researcher adapted this current instrument from the longer, 1995 Touch in Therapy self-report questionnaire developed by Horton, Clance, Sterk-Elifson and Emshoff. A mail back system was used, with swveys returned to a local post office box.. The Llkert …

There are many external forces affecting long-term care facilities: early discharges from hospitals result in sicker residents in the nursing home, a case mix prospective payment system is being piloted for rollout to all fifty states, and managed care enrollment is increasing for the Medicare population, …

Theses

A survey of 250 captive (animal market) and free-flying (trapped at a sheep farm) pigeons was conducted to assess the prevalence of Trichomonas sp. in the domestic pigeon (Columba livia) population, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Oropharyngeal swabs demonstrated that 52% of all pigeons were found with Trichomonas sp. in their oropharynx, of which 60%, 68% and 35% of pigeons were Trichomonas sp. positive in the AI Ain and Abu Dhabi animal markets and AI Ain sheep farm respectively. Captive birds had a significantly higher infection rate than the free-flying pigeons. Inspection of the oropharynx of live pigeons positive …

Student Attitudes Toward Individuals With Disabilities: Inclusive Versus Traditional Classrooms In Elementary School, Heather Young Jan 1997

Student Attitudes Toward Individuals With Disabilities: Inclusive Versus Traditional Classrooms In Elementary School, Heather Young

Theses

In recent years, many schools have begun to include students with disabilities in general education classrooms. Studies on "inclusion," have shown several positive effects for students with and without disabilities. This study examines the self-reported attitudes of 185 elementary school students in inclusive and traditional classrooms, as measured by the Scale of Children's Attitudes Toward Exceptionalities (SCATE). Self-reported attitudes and experiences of general education teachers were also assessed using a survey developed by the researcher. Although statistically significant relationships were found on the SCATE, these were not logical or conclusive. Results of the teacher surveys indicate that teachers of inclusive …

Lived Body Architecture : An Argument For Lived Bodies In Architecture And An Exploration Of Women's Lived Bodies In Society, Sherri A. Scribner

Theses

This thesis is about architecture's current disregard for the lived body and about the lived bodily experiences of women in Western society. Although these seem to be two different themes, they are connected. Architecture disregards the lived body, but it can never escape it. Architects design buildings from their own lived experiences of the world and architectural theorists most often write about architecture from their experience of being in the buildings they discuss. But because architecture has been built and discussed predominantly by men, Western theories of architecture reflect mainly a male interpretation. I begin by analyzing the paradigms of …

Association Between Counselors' Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Preferences And Self-Reported Level Of Directiveness In Counseling, William Frank Tayon

Theses

This study examined if there is any relationship between a counselor's personality, as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type indicator (MBTI), and the counselor's self-reported overall level of directiveness in counseling. A random sample of one-third of all of the Licensed Professional Counselors in the state of Missouri (N = 440) were mailed a 2 packet containing the MBTI Form G, a demographic form, and a Likert-type scale to indicate overall level of directiveness in counseling. For the 226 counselors who responded (51.4%), it was found that there was no relationship between level of directiveness and gender, years in practice, Extraversion/Introversion …

Performance Differences Between White, Black And Hispanic Students, Jessica Gebhardt

Theses

A major criticism of intelligence tests is that they are biased against ethnic minority groups. The purpose of this study was to examine whether culturally different values affect the performance of ethnic minority students on these standardized tests. The records of 21 White, 34 Black and 18 Hispanic students who had been given the WISC-HI were selected and scores on the timed subtests were compared. No significant differences were found between the White, Black and Hispanic groups on the basis of the overall Performance Scale IQ scores. However, the White students' scores on the Verbal Scale were significantly higher than …

Measurement Of The Electroencephalogram (Eeg) Coherence, Atmospheric Noise, And Schumann Resonances In Group Meditation, Douglas A. Newandee May 1996

Measurement Of The Electroencephalogram (Eeg) Coherence, Atmospheric Noise, And Schumann Resonances In Group Meditation, Douglas A. Newandee

Theses

Electrical activity in the human body was investigated using EEG and ECG measurements while subjects remained with eyes open, eyes closed and in a meditation state. During these measurements, additional antennas were attached to the equipment to record atmospheric noise and signal activity simultaneously. The obtained data was analyzed and various observations were made. Processed data based on antenna signals clearly showed the presence of man-made signals, having narrow spectral widths that could be treated as atmospheric noise in the frequency range up to 50 Hz. In addition, signals clustered around 7.8, 14.1, 20.3, 26.4, and 32.5 Hz were observed …

Environmental Communication : Theory And Practice, Mary Mccarney Mcmanus

Theses

The present study examines the relationship between environmental communication theory and practice. The focus of the case study is to examine the formal elements of an environmental document--the Industrial Pollution Prevention Planning guidelines published by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)--and the process by which this document was created. This study of product and process allows a methodology to be developed by which the complexities of environmental communication may be better understood.

Physical Attractiveness In Learning Disabled And Non Learning Disabled Fourth And Fifth Graders, Kenneth Gerald Solomon May 1996

Physical Attractiveness In Learning Disabled And Non Learning Disabled Fourth And Fifth Graders, Kenneth Gerald Solomon

Theses

The differences in subjective perceptions of physical attractiveness of learning disabled (LD) and non learning disabled (NLD) children were investigated. Three hundred and seventy-seven fourth and fifth grade students self-rated their appearance using the Body-Esteem Scales (Mendelson, B. K. & White, D.R., 1982). Thirty-six NLD males and females were randomly selected to match the number of LD children in both grades. (An ANOV A was used to calculate the differences in the means of the two groups.) Although the results did not reveal a statistically significant difference between the groups, a difference did occur indicating more negative perception of attractiveness …
