An Evaluation Of The Silicon Spectral Range For Determination Of Nutrient Content Of Grape Vines, Grant W.F. Anderson Jul 2016

An Evaluation Of The Silicon Spectral Range For Determination Of Nutrient Content Of Grape Vines, Grant W.F. Anderson

Theses

The grape industry relies on in situ crop assessment to aid in the day-to-day and seasonal management of their crop. In the case of soil-plant chemistry interactions, there are six key nutrients of interest to viticulturists in the growing of wine grapes: nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, zinc, and boron. Traditional methods of determining the levels of these nutrients are through collection and chemical analysis of petiole samples from the grape vines themselves. In this study, however, we collected ground-level observations of the spectra of the grape vines using a hyperspectral spectroradiometer (0.4-2.5µm range; 1nm resampled spectral interval) at the same …

Development Of A System Model For An Indirect Passive Solar Dryer With Experimental Validation, Samantha Huselstein

Theses

Solar crop drying is a cheap and effective way to preserve food material, especially in developing countries where fuel and electricity are expensive or unavailable. Some tropical fruits are difficult to transport and store leading to significant spoilage. Without access to fuel and large drying systems, preserving fruits for later use is challenging or not possible for the rural farmer. Developing low-cost, easily assembled locally and low maintenance fruit drying systems would improve access to off-season and distant markets. A mathematical model of an indirect passive solar drying system was developed to design and optimize drying systems for use in …

The Evolution Of Inequity Aversion: Nonhuman Primate Responses To Unequal Reward Distributions, Jessica Feller May 2016

The Evolution Of Inequity Aversion: Nonhuman Primate Responses To Unequal Reward Distributions, Jessica Feller

Theses

Inequity aversion, the negative response to receiving an unequal reward, has been intensely studied and is well established in humans. However, why humans developed a profound sense of equity is still enigmatic, and the evolutionary roots of this interesting phenomenon are still largely unknown. The little research that has been completed on nonhuman primates indicates that some species, like humans, are inequity averse, while others are not. Brosnan and de Waal (2003) suggested that an aversion to inequitable outcomes coevolved as a response to an increased emphasis on cooperative relationships, where individuals would respond negatively when their rewards differed from …

The Effects Of Maturational Variation On The Performance Of Young Australian Footballers And Their Selection Into The Australian Football League's Talent Pathway, Ashley Cripps Jan 2016

The Effects Of Maturational Variation On The Performance Of Young Australian Footballers And Their Selection Into The Australian Football League's Talent Pathway, Ashley Cripps

Theses

Traditional player development pathways share a common goal, to identify and accelerate the development of talented adolescent players for senior competition. Players who gain selection into development programs gain greater access to experienced coaches, training facilities, support staff and competition. However, despite such advantages, research has shown that few players who gain initial selection into development pathways progress into professional senior competition. A major factor which potentially contributes to poor player retention in development pathways is the initial misidentification of talented athletes due to variations in biological maturity.

Earlier maturing individuals have been shown to be at a physical advantage …
