Analysis Of Color Errors And Their Sources In A Commercial Color Reproduction Process, Sakda Siriphan Jul 1971

Analysis Of Color Errors And Their Sources In A Commercial Color Reproduction Process, Sakda Siriphan

Theses

To analyze color errors and their sources in the color reproduction process, the reproduction is visually evaluated and compared visually with the original scene color scales and also with the original transparency viewed on a variable brightness illuminator (D5000) with an opaque reflective white surround. Graphs (press plate curves, single color proofs and END of single color proofs) have been added to the Kodak tone-reproduction diagram (1960) to obtain more complete steps in the analysis of the tone-reproduction and the color balance. The GATF Evaluation Method of Ink Color is tested and the GARC colorimetric system, which is a modified …

Design Of A Tactile Vocoder, Roger Carr

Theses

A tactile vocoder is designed for the feedback of acoustic cues for detection by the sense of touch. Design objectives based on speech signal properties are generated. An existing spectrum channel vocoder is the starting point of the design. The follow-on modulation stage after the filter channels of the spectrum channel vocoder is built up in a breadboard model and tested. The transfer function of the modulation stage has an input dynamic range of 68 decibels, being linear over 38 decibels of this range. The complete breadboard model using one of the filter channels has an input dynamic range of …

An Audio Oscillator Triggering Circuit For The Eg&G 501 High Speed Stroboscope; With Integrated Digital Timing, Boisey Collins

Theses

A timing generator was designed and built for an EG&G 501 High Speed Stroboscope. The generator delivers a burst of one, two, four or eight pulses at a selected repetition rate from .5HZ to 20KHZ; upon initiation by a start signal. An Unijunction Transistor ( UJT ) oscillator provides the basic repetition rate and Integrated Circuit ( IC ) Digital Logic is used to count and gate the output pulses. The circuit diagrams and construction details are given.

Comparison Of The Development Characteristics Of A Sodium Thiosulfate Monobath With That Of A Mercaptoacetic Acid Monobath, Richard Smith Jun 1971

Comparison Of The Development Characteristics Of A Sodium Thiosulfate Monobath With That Of A Mercaptoacetic Acid Monobath, Richard Smith

Theses

The development characteristics of mercaptoacetic acid monobaths were compared with those of sodium thiosulfate monobaths at varying fixing-agent concentrations. The following differences were noted: (1) it required four times more moles-per-liter of sodium thiosulfate than metcaptoacetic acid to obtain the same rate of fixation; (2) the mercaptoacetic acid monobath produced less silver than the sodium thiosulfate; (3) KODAK Panatomic-X Film developed in a mercaptoacetic acid monobath had a covering power greater than or equal to that produced by development in the same phenidone-hydroquinone developer without any fixing agent, whereas the covering power of the sodium thiosulfate monobath was less; (4) …

Tone Reproduction Of Small-Scale Images Using Lithographic Film Under Infectious And Noninfectious Developmental Conditions, Julian Lopez Jun 1971

Tone Reproduction Of Small-Scale Images Using Lithographic Film Under Infectious And Noninfectious Developmental Conditions, Julian Lopez

Theses

The tone reproduction curve of small-scale images on KODALITH film developed with KODALITH Super Developer were obtained by microdensitometry using a sinusoidal target of 64 percent modulation as a sensitometric tablet to produce images at spatial frequencies corresponding to screen rulings of 9 to 375 lines/inch. A similar series of exposures was processed with addition of sulfite to the developer to give essentially noninfectious development. Speed and contrast with KODALITH developer increased with spatial frequency; speed increased continuously by a small factor and contrast passed through a maximum (80 percent greater than for large area image) at a spatial frequency …

Alkylation And Arylalkylation Of Hydrazones, Ann Bayley Jun 1971

Alkylation And Arylalkylation Of Hydrazones, Ann Bayley

Theses

In order to increase the organic solvent solubility of aryl-hydrazones, N-alkylation was attempted. The substrates acetaldehyde 2,46-trinitrophenylhydrazone (acetaldehyde TNP) and acetone 2,46-trinitrophenylhydrazone (acetone TNP) were prepared and characterized. Alkylation attempts were made with reagents and conditions the same as those successful in alkylating acetone 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (acetone DNP). Attempts were made with differing alkylating reagents, equivalence ratios, times and temperatures. Alkylating procedes via the anion of the substrate. The anions of the substrate were prepared and characterized via uv and nmr. Altered structure of the anion relative to the hydrazone lead to its chemical stability and appeared to preclude its alkylation. …

An Investigation Of The Aesthetic Quality Of Gloss As Produced By Overprint Varnishing, John Bechtel Jun 1971

An Investigation Of The Aesthetic Quality Of Gloss As Produced By Overprint Varnishing, John Bechtel

Theses

The undertaking of this investigation was to question the aesthetic significance of overprint varnish. To do this a statistical investigation was developed to answer the question: "When the protection factor of overprint varnishing is of little or no significance, does overprint varnishing of the finished product add an element of aesthetic quality sufficient to justify the outlay of additional funds?" The philosophy of the investigation revolved around the investigative sample distinguishing the overprint varnishing process as a significant aesthestic enhancement process. To do this a sample of 15 sets of magazine quality reproductions, all printed under the same conditions, were …

A Color Photometer For Calibrating Light Sources, Harvey Gartner May 1971

A Color Photometer For Calibrating Light Sources, Harvey Gartner

Theses

A Color Photometer designed to calibrate tungsten sources to a standard source has been produced. It is accurate to within a few mired values, though not enough testing was done to specify its limits. There is also a good probability that the color -photometer can be used to find the color temperature of most tungsten sources including many that are not close to the color temperature of the standard source .

Variations In Functional Relationships Between Amplitude And Phase Images, Gilbert Tunney

Theses

The objective of this research is to study the functional relationship between amplitude and phase images, using a sinusoidal test function. Amplitude and phase sine wave gratings were produced and scanned. It was found that the phase image closely reproduces the amplitude image for low spatial frequencies, but the accuracy of reproduction falls off at high spatial frequencies.

The Effect Of Flash Duration On Spectral Color-Naming, David Loshin, Edward Saunders Jan 1971

The Effect Of Flash Duration On Spectral Color-Naming, David Loshin, Edward Saunders

Theses

The effect of flash durations of 5 milliseconds (msec.), 500 msec., and 5 seconds on a color naming technique was examined in a dark –field Maxwellian View optical system. Although the results showed variability among three subjects in most regions of the spectrum, all subjects were tested and showed to be part of the population for normal color perception. Graphical interpretation was made for the average of all subjects. There was little indication that color naming shifted, although there are indications of hue purity increases with flash duration. In portions of the spectrum there is an increase in saturation from …

Determining The Temperature Of Hot Solid Bodies By Means Of Photographic Pyrometry, Using The Two-Filter Comparison Method, Edward White Jan 1971

Determining The Temperature Of Hot Solid Bodies By Means Of Photographic Pyrometry, Using The Two-Filter Comparison Method, Edward White

Theses

At means of determining the temperature of a hot solid body by photographic means has been developed. For the purposes of this experiment, a General Electric tungsten ribbon filament lamp, with an operating range of 12 to 18 amperes was used as the object. From published curves, it was found that the color temperature of the filament varied from 2220K to 2990K over the above amperage range. It is therefore possible to vary the color temperature with a powerstat and to monitor it with an ammeter. Using two front surfaced mirrors, the lamp illuminated both sides of a photometric edge …

Theory Of Optical Spatial Filtering And Its Application To Enhance Low Contrast Fingerprint Images, Ludwig Scherlowski Jan 1971

Theory Of Optical Spatial Filtering And Its Application To Enhance Low Contrast Fingerprint Images, Ludwig Scherlowski

Theses

Image improvement, through the use of the Fourier transform property of lenses using various frequency blocking filters, was investigated to determine possible utilization of this technique to enhance low contrast fingerprint image characteristics. Ten basic fingerprint patterns were degraded in contrast and then used as the object t(x,y) in an optical spatial filtering setup. A series of frequency blocking filters were used in an effort to improve the degraded object image. Visual comparison of the filtered images obtained by using a double band frequency blocking filter, which produced the most satisfactory images, shows improved overall contrast. Random ridge enhancement was …

The Synthesis And Application Of Programmable Counters, James Milne Jan 1971

The Synthesis And Application Of Programmable Counters, James Milne

Theses

A method of synthesizing programmable counters is described. It is shown that if the values of the program inputs are not fixed by external requirements, they can be defined during the synthesis to tend to minimize the combinational logic of the programmable counter. A programmable counter can be used as the control unit in a word organized digital system. The cost effectiveness of synthesizing synchronous sequential machines modeled as word organized digital systems is discussed.

Rearrangement Of Allylic Alcohols, Herbert Barbehenn Jan 1971

Rearrangement Of Allylic Alcohols, Herbert Barbehenn

Theses

Three allylic type alcohols were rearranged in sulfuric acid (l, 10 and 50%) at 25 and 100C and their products identified. Specifically, 2-phenyl-lpropen-3-ol, 2-methyl-l-phenyl-l-propen-3-ol and 2-methyl-3-phenyl-l-propen-3-ol were studied. 2-Phenyl-l-propen-3-ol was found to rearrange to 2-phenylpropionaldehyde while 2-methyl-1-phenyl-l-propen-3-ol formed 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanal, isobutyrophenone and 2-methyl-3-phenyl-l-propen-3-ol. The final rearrangement of the 2-methyl-3-phenyl-lpropen- 3-ol allylic alcohol produced 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanal, isobutyrophenone, 2-methyl-l-phenyll- propen-3-ol and 2-(2-phenylisopropyl)-4-phenyl-5- methyl-1, 3-dioxane.

Peak Harmonic Distortion Due To Quantization, On-Ching Yue Jan 1971

Peak Harmonic Distortion Due To Quantization, On-Ching Yue

Theses

An Instrument For The Determination Of Photographic Film Drying Rates, John Dahms, W. Fox Jan 1971

An Instrument For The Determination Of Photographic Film Drying Rates, John Dahms, W. Fox

Theses

The way in which a photographic material dries is commonly represented as a plot of rate of vaporization vs. time. Generation of these curves in the past has been a lengthy, error prone process. This project's attempt was to greatly simplify the generation of these curves. A photographic drier with a thermal sensing element was designed, constructed, and tested. The drier produces a heated air flow perpendicular to the film plane. A thermistor prope was placed in contact with the base of the film to sense the temperature of the film during drying. A rate of vaporization curve was obtained …

Unsteady State Heat Transfer In A Composite Medium Exposed To Radiant Heat Energy, Ripujit Mackar Oct 1970

Unsteady State Heat Transfer In A Composite Medium Exposed To Radiant Heat Energy, Ripujit Mackar

Theses

Transient one dimensional heat transfer in a composite medium of two materials exposed to radiant heat flux has been investigated. The end faces of the composite were considered to be losing heat energy by natural convection and radiation. The principle variables studied were the temperature at steady state and the time required to attain the steady state with and without the contribution of loss by radiation. It was observed that neglecting the loss of energy by radiation from the face receiving the radiant heat flux introduced an error in the absolute steady state temperature of that face as high as …
