Effects Of Varying Unsharp Masking And Contrasts In Duplicate Mammographs With Respect To Cancer Detection, Leonard Parker Jan 1975

Effects Of Varying Unsharp Masking And Contrasts In Duplicate Mammographs With Respect To Cancer Detection, Leonard Parker

Theses

This report examines two methods of enhancing a photographic image and applies them to duplicating mammographs. Subtractive unsharp masking, one such method, is a photo-optical edge enhancement technique. The degree of unsharpness is controlled by interspacing between the mammograph and a receiving film while exposing. The other method is optimizing the combination of masking film contrast and duplicating film contrast. Three levels of unsharpness, two levels of mask contrast and two levels of duplicating film contrast were tested. The common objective of this project and mammography in general involves the recognition and diagnosis of breast cancer. Specifically, the experimental objective …

A Computer Based Analysis Of The Effects Of Rhythm Modification On The Intelligibility Of The Speech Of Hearing And Deaf Subjects, Harry Lang Jan 1975

A Computer Based Analysis Of The Effects Of Rhythm Modification On The Intelligibility Of The Speech Of Hearing And Deaf Subjects, Harry Lang

Theses

The speech of profoundly deaf persons often exhibits acquired unnatural rhythms, or a random pattern of rhythms. Inappropriate pause-time and speech-time durations are common in their speech. Specific rhythm deficiencies include abnormal rate of syllable utterance, improper grouping, poor timing and phrasing of syllables and unnatural stress for accent and emphasis. Assuming that temporal features are fundamental to the naturalness of spoken language, these abnormal timing patterns are often detractive. They may even be important factors in the decreased intelligibility of the speech. This thesis explores the significance of temporal cues in the rhythmic patterns of speech. An analysis-synthesis approach …

Evaluation And Testing Of Color Strength Measuring Methods In The Graphic Arts, Barry Sullivan, Donald Wilkalis Jan 1975

Evaluation And Testing Of Color Strength Measuring Methods In The Graphic Arts, Barry Sullivan, Donald Wilkalis

Theses

The term color strength is defined as the hue, saturation, and brightness of an ink in the C.I.E. scheme of color specification. With this definition two color strength measuring methods are evaluated on a common basis. A colorimeter is used to read samples produced with varied ink-film thicknesses and varied ratios of white pigment to sample ink. Colorimetric properties are plotted on a U.C.S. diagram with coordinates modified to include the C.I.E. brightness factor W*. The ink-film thickness method is chosen as the preferred method for determining color strength.

Photosolubilization Of Cuprous Bromide, Richard Frisicano, Jeffrey Harris Jan 1975

Photosolubilization Of Cuprous Bromide, Richard Frisicano, Jeffrey Harris

Theses

A dissolution system called photosolubilization invented in 1964 by R.K. Blake and applied to silver halide was investigated to determine the feasibility of adapting the system from silver to copper. After cuprous bromide was shown to be light sensitive and able to be insolubilized, using a mercaptan ( 2-mercapto-4-phenylthiazole ), many of the parameters affecting this process were determined. The best photosolubilization was achieved using a 1/100 mole ratio of mercaptan to cuprous bromide. Insolubilization improved with increased mercaptan digestion time while pH appeared to have little effect on this mechanism. PH did change final print-out density. Increased sensitivity was …

A Study Of The Effect Of Ink Tack, Printing Pressure, And Printing Speed On Toning In The Driographic System, Thomas Rigg Jun 1974

A Study Of The Effect Of Ink Tack, Printing Pressure, And Printing Speed On Toning In The Driographic System, Thomas Rigg

Theses

An investigation was made into one of the newer planographic printing plates, specifically 3M's Dry Plate. This plate is part of the system more popularly known as driography. As with many new processes, driography is beset with several problems. These include plate durability, substrate suitability, and toning. This study deals with the problem of toning and a. method for investigating it. In driography, toning is defined as the inking of the non-image background of the plate. Several factors are thought to have an effect on the amount of toning. Factors such as ink tack, ink temperature, room temperature, humidity, speed, …

A Study Of Industry-Prepared Instructional Aids And Services And Their Use By Graphic Arts Educators, Jere Rentzel

Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine which instructional aids and services graphic arts teachers felt were needed to improve their programs and themselves, and to compare those desired aids and services to the ones currently being provided by A.B. Dick, Addressograph-Multigraph, DuPont, Eastman Kodak, and the 3M Company. The secondary purpose was to develop a publishable list of instructional aids and services for graphic arts teachers. The graphic arts teachers' needs were solicited through a survey form completed by Rochester, New York, area teachers and by those graphic arts teachers who attended a special interest session, "New …

Resolution Targets As A Measure Of Detail In Reproduction Of Engineering Drawings, Thomas Pratuch Jun 1974

Resolution Targets As A Measure Of Detail In Reproduction Of Engineering Drawings, Thomas Pratuch

Theses

The purpose of the experimentation was to abstract the problem of reading an engineering drawing so untrained observers could be used, and in so doing, find the minimum detail of drafted materials. Once the minimum detail condition was established, testing was to continue to find the procedures necessary to test for correlation between resolution targets and the minimum detail. The final goal was to reach a set of recommendations for further work and reduce the amount of unnecessary work for later experimenters. In short this paper was to help bring the testing of resolution and drafted materials to the same …

A Photographic Recorder For Experimental Parachute Test Data, Peter Vredenburg Jun 1974

A Photographic Recorder For Experimental Parachute Test Data, Peter Vredenburg

Theses

Improvement in the ability to record and retrieve experimental data in general enhances the degree of utilization of information. Recent advances in electronic logic circuits, and the advent of the light emitting diode, make possible the utilization of photography as an initial recording medium. This improves the retrieval time for data, since it can be reduced and coded prior to recording with modern solid state circuits. A feasibility study, and construction of a prototype recorder was done for application to experimental parachute test data. The recorder monitors strain gage response at a sample rate of 20 per second, converts the …

An Evaluation Of The Applicability Of A.N.S.I. Standard Ph-2.9 To Contemporary Medical X-Ray Films Designated For Automated Processing, David Binko May 1974

An Evaluation Of The Applicability Of A.N.S.I. Standard Ph-2.9 To Contemporary Medical X-Ray Films Designated For Automated Processing, David Binko

Theses

Three medium speed screen-type medical x-ray films were exposed and manually processed in accordance with the procedures outlined in A.N.S.I. Standard PH-2.9, "Sensitometry of Medical X-Ray Films". Subsequent to processing, all samples were evaluated upon the response variables of base plus fog density, maximum density, A.N.S.I. speed, and A.N.S.I. contrast. A second set of film samples, exposed identically to the manually processed samples, were processed in a ninety-second cycle automated system. After sensitometric evaluation of the automated samples, a statistical comparison of the results obtained by both processing procedures was executed. In the second phase of the investigation, a factorial …
