Minimization Of Unwanted X-Ray Exposures On Conventional Photographic Films By Developer Modification, Michael L. Rudolph May 1979

Minimization Of Unwanted X-Ray Exposures On Conventional Photographic Films By Developer Modification, Michael L. Rudolph

Theses

Experiments were done to reduce the influence of unwanted X-ray exposures on Kodak Plus-X film. Variations of surface developer components showed no favorable results. The concentration of KBr was varied up to 10 grams per liter with again, no favorable results. The incorperation of benzitriazole decreased base plus fog from values of .81 to .56 with a significant decrease in speed. Phenyl mercaptotetrazole was extreamly effective in decreasing both base plus fog and speed.

Noise Reduction By Multiple Image Printing, William Mcdonnell

Theses

A method of noise reduction by the successive partial printings of identical negatives was investigated. Image enhancement in terms of granularity reduction and resolution increase was obtained.

Mtf Analysis Of An Emulsion Used For Color Paper, C. Alan Way May 1979

Mtf Analysis Of An Emulsion Used For Color Paper, C. Alan Way

Theses

This thesis studied the relationship between the MTF's of a color emulsion used for photographic paper but coated on clear base. Analysis of the MTF curves show differences that can be attributed to interimage effects. The effects in the red and blue sensitive layers caused a decrease in the overall MTF of the film.

An Investigation Of The Emotional Connotations Of Printing Types, Michael Blum May 1979

An Investigation Of The Emotional Connotations Of Printing Types, Michael Blum

Theses

This thesis addresses itself to the problem of understanding the emotional connotations of printing types. It is hypothesized that there is a model useful in predicting reactions to a given type style based on atmosphere value and usage. The majority of the literature on this subject is nonempirical. It is characterized by the author's stating their opinions with little or no attempt to validate them. The empirical literature shows that there is an emotional connotation associated with particular type faces. These studies have not shown, however, the importance of this connotation in terms of appropriate choice of type faces . …

An Individualized Approach To The Teaching Of American Literature, Judith A. Rose May 1979

An Individualized Approach To The Teaching Of American Literature, Judith A. Rose

Theses

Judith A. Rose’s An Individualized Approach to the Teaching of American Literature (1979) explores the effectiveness of individualized instruction in high school American literature classes. The study compares two instructional methods: a traditional, teacher-directed classroom and an individualized learning environment where students negotiate learning contracts, choose activities, and progress at their own pace. The study focuses on a unit centered around To Kill a Mockingbird and evaluates student outcomes in both cognitive and affective domains.

The research finds that students in the individualized classroom showed higher engagement, greater responsibility for their learning, and a small but notable improvement in test …

Determining The Modulation Transfer Function Of A Lens-Film Combination Using The Diffraction Effects Of A Coherent Imaging System, Mark Washburn May 1979

Determining The Modulation Transfer Function Of A Lens-Film Combination Using The Diffraction Effects Of A Coherent Imaging System, Mark Washburn

Theses

This study will present a simple, quick, and inexpensive way to producing sinusoidal test targets, which can then be used in measuring the image quality of a photographic system by way of a coherent system. The sinusoidal test targets will be produced from a series of bar targets using Fourier Optics, and a comparison study will be made between measuring MTF with a laser and a microdensitometer. A defocused target series will also be produced to note the change in MTF of the photographic system. The results indicate that sinusoidal test targets can be made quickly and inexpensively, and then …

An Electronic Switching System: A Computer Model For Traffic Study, Richard Mcinnes May 1979

An Electronic Switching System: A Computer Model For Traffic Study, Richard Mcinnes

Theses

When designing a telephone switching system, it is necessary to ensure that the system will be able to handle a prescribed quantity of traffic (telephone calls) ; both at any particular instant and during a given period of time. By modelling the switching system with a digital computer, it is possible to determine the traffic handling capability of the system prior to investing in a prototype. In this manner, the system architecture can be altered by merely changing software rather than by rearranging the hardware in a prototype. The savings in terms of time and money provide the stimulus for …

Estimation Of Bore Loads In Quenching Of Rings By An Expanding Segmented Die, Harry Dodd May 1979

Estimation Of Bore Loads In Quenching Of Rings By An Expanding Segmented Die, Harry Dodd

Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a method that could be used to estimate the necessary bore load on a part quenched in a quenching machine with an expanding segmented die. Such a method would be of special benefit to gear manufacturers with little quenching experience; and it could also help to greatly reduce or eliminate the very costly trial and error procedure presently used. The method must be simple enough to be used in a production situation. Such a method has been developed for estimating the expander cylinder force required to produce the greatest amount of correction …

Stereoscopic Analysis Of Fatigue Products Of Photochromic Triarylemethane Leucocyanide Dyes, Thomas Stanzione Mar 1979

Stereoscopic Analysis Of Fatigue Products Of Photochromic Triarylemethane Leucocyanide Dyes, Thomas Stanzione

Theses

Thin layer chromatography and infrared spectroscopy were used to identify the fatigue products of malachite green, crystal violet, and new fuschine leucocyanides in dimethylsulfoxide and reagent alcohol. In DMSO solutions, a yellow substance with an absorption peak near 350 nanometers and a decomposition product of DMSO were found. The latter product appeared to be a mixture of several compounds, including water, dimethylsulfite , and dimethylsulfone, and was found to cause unfatigued solutions to fatigue with no exposure. In leucocyanide in reagent alcohol solutions , the leucohydroxide and leucoethoxide forms of the dyes were found in fatigued solutions. The Rf values …

The Correlation Of Hammett Substituent And Brownstein Solvent Constants With Photochromic Properties Of Triarylmethane Dye Leucocyanides, Robert Bayley Feb 1979

The Correlation Of Hammett Substituent And Brownstein Solvent Constants With Photochromic Properties Of Triarylmethane Dye Leucocyanides, Robert Bayley

Theses

Five triarylmethane leucocyanides were synthesized from their parent dyes, and a photochromic test apparatus was designed and fabricated. The leucocyanides were tested for sensitivity and fade time in six solvents. The data was found to correlate well with Hammett substituent constants and with Brownstein solvent coefficients with certain exceptions.

A Synchronous Data Compression System, Joseph Calcagno Feb 1979

A Synchronous Data Compression System, Joseph Calcagno

Theses

This thesis discusses in detail the steps required for the design of a general purpose Data Acquisition System (D.A.S.). This D.A.S. is called a Synchronous Data Compression System (S.D.C.S.) because of some special features. The S.D.C.S. is designed to accept data in analog or digital form. A simple control panel interface is developed, and areas of prime interest such as input/output interface control, analog-to-digital conversion, data compression, and data sampling modes are discussed in detail. ? The primary logic type used for the S.D.C.S. is the CMOS type 4000 Series which was developed by R.C. A.
