Some Observations On The Development Of Pharmacy And Recommendations For Improving The Allocation Of Resources At St. Joseph's Hospital, Ivy Ann D. Lee-Sharpe Jan 1981

Some Observations On The Development Of Pharmacy And Recommendations For Improving The Allocation Of Resources At St. Joseph's Hospital, Ivy Ann D. Lee-Sharpe

Theses

It is the intent of this paper to trace the developmental history of pharmacy alluding to the profession as an integral part of medicine when treatment was simple, magically connected and filled with superstitions. It separated when medical knowledge expanded, technology advanced and regulations formalized pharmacy. Social and environmental factors established the needs for specialists to handle, compound, prepare and dispense drugs and medicines. The institutionalization of care and the entrance of the pharmacists in these institutions were influential in this separation and will be discussed. Although formally separated, pharmacy stayed intimately linked with medicine in literature and formal education …

A Midsummer Night's Dream: A Scenic And Lighting Design, Stephanie Dee Young Jan 1981

A Midsummer Night's Dream: A Scenic And Lighting Design, Stephanie Dee Young

Theses

This thesis by Stephanie Dee Young details the scenic and lighting design process for a 1981 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Lindenwood College, undertaken as a Master of Fine Arts project. The work examines the collaborative nature of theatrical production, emphasizing the interplay between director, designers, and other creative staff in shaping a unified artistic vision. The initial directorial concept, rooted in the metaphor “wings in flight,” evolved into an Eastern-influenced aesthetic that emphasized fantasy, mystique, and romance. The scenic design utilized abstracted Eastern motifs to distinguish the structured court from the magical forest, employing fabric panels, custom-built …

The Use Of The Spline Function In Computer-Aided Type Design, Kathleen Barry Albertini Jan 1981

The Use Of The Spline Function In Computer-Aided Type Design, Kathleen Barry Albertini

Theses

The traditional type designer works with pen, in and paper. The characters that he designs go through many changes before the whole font is finalized and set in the printing medium. Further alterations to the font may occur after he prints and evaluates a sample piece of text. Computer-aided type design presents the type designer with a new design tool. Computers have been used in the printing industry for typesetting; the automation of type design is a logical next step. Freeing the designer from the repetitive tasks of the design cycle is one obvious advantage cf using computers. But computer-aided …

Three Dimensional Resonant Vibrations And Stresses In Turbine Blade Groups, Patrick J. Kline Jan 1981

Three Dimensional Resonant Vibrations And Stresses In Turbine Blade Groups, Patrick J. Kline

Theses

This thesis describes an efficient procedure for calculating three dimensional resonant vibrations and stresses in intermediate and high pressure turbine blade groups. This procedure is capable of calculating all the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and bending stresses in the tangential, axial, and coupled modes of vibration. Simple beam theory is applied to develop a dynamic stiffness matrix. The solutions to this matrix give the natural frequencies and mode shapes for the blade group. Prohl's energy method is used to determine the amplitude of the forced vibrations and the dynamic stresses. A Goodman diagram fatigue criterion is applied to evaluate the …

A New Correlation For Heat Transfer During Flow Boiling, Bhabesh K. Thakur Jan 1981

A New Correlation For Heat Transfer During Flow Boiling, Bhabesh K. Thakur

Theses

This thesis is concerned with an investigation carried out to establish a new correlation for the prediction of the heat transfer coefficient during flow boiling through tubes, vertical and horizontal flows, for water and organic fluids (including refrigerants). An additive mechanism of convective and boiling heat transfer has been formulated to give the net heat transfer during flow boiling. The correlation employs three dimensionless parameters: the Convection number, the Boiling number and the Froude number. The correlation has been tested with the data (over 500) from twelve experimental cases of six investigators and the mean deviation from the measured values …

Tubular Solar Collector Analysis And Comparison With Flat Plate Collectors In Sdhw Applications, Kevin A. Cole Jan 1981

Tubular Solar Collector Analysis And Comparison With Flat Plate Collectors In Sdhw Applications, Kevin A. Cole

Theses

A residential solar domestic hot water system utilizing tubular solar collectors is analyzed for climatic conditions typical of various regions of the Northeast. Experimentally determined system parameters are used in analytical simulations to compare the performance of systems using two different flat plate collectors to the system using the tubular type. A cost/benefit analysis is performed to determine the economic feasibility of the various systems.

The Effect Of Using Games In The Language Arts Classroom On The Achievement And Motivation Of Ninth Graders, Jan Dineen Dec 1980

The Effect Of Using Games In The Language Arts Classroom On The Achievement And Motivation Of Ninth Graders, Jan Dineen

Theses

The proposed study would be conducted with fifty to sixty rural, male and female students enrolled in ninth grade language arts classes to determine whether the use of games bas a greater effect on achievement and motivation, than the use of the traditional techniques of lecture and discussion. A modification of the nonequivalent control group design is intended for use which two intact classrooms to test the two hypotheses. The effects of the treatment would be measured by a twenty item achievement test adapted from two other standardized achievement tests and one criterion-referenced test. It would also be assessed by …

Attitudes Of Mid-Life Mothers Toward Their Daughters' Adolescence, Terri Sweig Dec 1980

Attitudes Of Mid-Life Mothers Toward Their Daughters' Adolescence, Terri Sweig

Theses

This paper discusses the ways in which mid-life mothers reflected their attitudes toward the emerging womanhood of their adolescent daughters through art work. It concerns natural and normal developmental stresses which occur as mothers and daughters pass through difficult life stages somewhat simultaneously. A non-clinical group of four mothers between 38 and 44-years old with daughters between 14 and 17-years old responded to five specifically designed drawing tasks derived from literature on mid-life and mothers and daughters. Information was elicited regarding each mother's relationship to her own mother, the negotiation of her own adolescence, and her present self-concept. Discussion of …

The Effect Of Screen Ruling On The Saturation Of Pastel Gamut Colors, John T. Chittick Nov 1980

The Effect Of Screen Ruling On The Saturation Of Pastel Gamut Colors, John T. Chittick

Theses

Reproduction of pastel colors by offset lithography produces images that have less color saturation than their continuous tone counterparts. This problem is primarily attributable to the halftone structure which approximates continuous tone pastels with large amounts of white paper and small amounts of chromatic ink. This thesis investigates the effect of screen frequency upon pastel color saturation. Single and two color overprint tints of nominal five, 10, and 15 percent printing dot areas were printed in 85, 100, 120, 133, 150, and 200 lines screen rulings. The reflectances of these colors were measured with a colorimeter and converted to CIEL*a*b* …

Granularity: Investigating Equations That Convert (T) To (D), Frederick Catt Nov 1980

Granularity: Investigating Equations That Convert (T) To (D), Frederick Catt

Theses

An investigation was done on three published expanded equations, that convert (T) to (D). T. Celio, J. Altman and M. Abouelata published equations of the same form, but with differing constants. Their equations were derived by using an assumed square-wave transmittance trace. The investigation was to find the best predictor of (D) from (T) . Both practical and simulation tests were run. The density range was extended, to check for failure at both high and low densities. Standard granularity measurement procedures were followed as close as possible. Results, from the practical tests, showed Altman 's equation the best predictor of …

Osmotic And Mean Activity Coefficients Of Libr And Lic In Methanol At 25, 35, And 45 Degrees C, Peggy Tomasula Sep 1980

Osmotic And Mean Activity Coefficients Of Libr And Lic In Methanol At 25, 35, And 45 Degrees C, Peggy Tomasula

Theses

Vapor pressure depression data of LiBr and LiCl in methanol at temperatures of 25,35, and 45°C were measured in the molality range 0.1-4.4m using a static method, where the difference in vapor pressure of the electrolytic solution is compared to that of pure methanol.

Osmotic coefficients were calculated from the vapor pressure data. This data was then correlated with both the one parameter Bromley equation and the three parameter Pitzer equation. For all systems at all temperatures, the data were better correlated by the Pitzer equation than with the Bromley equation. Mean activity coefficients of the two salts at the …

Kinetics Of Rehalogenation Bleaches, Kenneth A. Harrison Sep 1980

Kinetics Of Rehalogenation Bleaches, Kenneth A. Harrison

Theses

A study was made to determine if a correlation existed between the silver density at 318 nm and the actual amount of silver present in photographic film. Based on twenty (20) samples of bleached and unbleached film, a linear correlation was found, for specific film/ developer combinations, with a correlation coefficient in excess of 0.99. The above correlation was then used to evaluate the bleaching kinetics of several rehalogenation type bleaches. It was postulated that there is a charge barrier effect between the photographic gelatin and the positively charged oxidizing agent in the bleaches. This was caused by the pH …
