Management Of The Interface Between Product Design And Production, Adam Fischer May 1983

Management Of The Interface Between Product Design And Production, Adam Fischer

Theses

The goal of this thesis was to identify some of the many obstacles which tend to, in some way or manner, delay the timely, satisfactory progression of new developments from becoming new profit items. These obstacles which are numerous are the results of personal observation plus research of many books and periodicals. The identification of the obstacles will hopefully result in their obviation. Notable accomplishments along these lines tend to:

1. Reduce the loss of opportunity to gain an appreciable market share.

2. Reduce investment/overhead cost by earlier recovery of cost through earlier marketing effort.

3. Reduce continuing engineering costs …

An Analysis For The Blade Coating Of Ctbn Modified Epoxy Adhesive, Jeng-Li Liang May 1983

An Analysis For The Blade Coating Of Ctbn Modified Epoxy Adhesive, Jeng-Li Liang

Theses

A resin metering criterion has been developed for processing the prepregs of CTBN-EPOXY resin in which the resin content can be controlled within close tolerances. This criterion was obtained by numerically simulating the flow of CTBN-EPDXY resin in the blade-type metering device at room temperature. The Newtonion case of CTBN-EPOXY resin was selected for the study to avoid dealing with more complicated flow equations. A methodology of using the penalty function/finite element formulation was developed to solve the steady state Navior-Stokes equation.

The rheological data show that the CTBN-EPOXY resin is a non-Newtonion fluid at low shear rate. On the …

Managing In The Technical Sales Arena, Robert Munro May 1983

Managing In The Technical Sales Arena, Robert Munro

Theses

The major objective of this thesis is to portray the role of a Field Engineer for a major manufacturer of electrical distribution and control equipment. In so doing, it should represent a reasonable facsimile of what a sales manager of a large Field Office, comprised of approximately twelve Field Engineers, would encounter in his supervisory capacity. As such, it should provide information for those interested in entering and hoping to manage in technical sales career.

While much of the information was derived from books, periodicals, and conversations with people associated with the electrical industry, the major portion of the work …

Industry looks forward to robotic technology to solve, its declining productivity dilemma. The purpose of this paper is to' aid a Prospective robot buyer in selecting the appropriate application and in particular a suitable robot for that application. A listing of robot performance characteristics, criteria chart, and evaluation table were developed to guide the engineer through the necessary steps required in selecting a successful robot application.

The history of robotics is discussed briefly along with an explanation of …

The Operational Utility Of The Walton-Mckersie Attitudinal Structuring Model In Collective Bargaining, Donald Warren May 1983

The Operational Utility Of The Walton-Mckersie Attitudinal Structuring Model In Collective Bargaining, Donald Warren

Theses

This work is an heuristic inquiry into behavioral change theory designed for application to labor/management interaction in collective bargaining. The theory itself was postulated by Richard E. Walton and Robert B. McKersie in their book A Behavioral Theory Of Labor Negotiations. The principles of their theory are highly axiomatic and their importance and validity can only be recognized through applied empirical analyses that demonstrate or refute its concept.

The aspect of the theory which is the focal point of this research pertains to the structuring and restructuring of attitudes and attendant relationships resulting from the collective bargaining process. The objective …

The Right Mood, Mary Pat O'Brien May 1983

The Right Mood, Mary Pat O'Brien

Theses

Through this supportive documentation of my thesis work, I hope to verbally clarify the intentions mentioned in my proposal. Due to the subjective nature of abstract paintings, it is nearly impossible to conclusively prove a point. By referring to observations made by and about other artists and their work, I have been able to substantiate and complement my own ideas. I found evidence of what I interpreted to be the underlying attitude that is developed individually but shared collectively by artists. It seems this "shared attitude" has no geographic or time boundaries. It is remarkable to note parallels between the …

Saints And Pagans, Laurence K. Daughters May 1983

Saints And Pagans, Laurence K. Daughters

Theses

In preparation for this project I have read material on Andean culture and assembled myths and legends indigenous to the region. This collection, along with research I will undertake in Quito, will eventually aid me in the presentations of my thesis. Pending financial considerations I plan to leave for Ecuador in the beginning of June and establish contacts in Quito with Ministerio de Asuntos Indigenas, sociologists, and photographers who advocate in interest in Indian culture, and Peace Corps volunteers working in the highland area. During my stay I intend to be frank and open about my objectives, offering to share …

Emotion As Visual Image, Beth Buvarsky May 1983

Emotion As Visual Image, Beth Buvarsky

Theses

I intend to explore the importance of object and image as symbols that visually express emotion. I am interested in the human condition and the influences and impressions that cause us to see things the way we do. Through the transformation of feelings and forms, I hope to relate emotional responses to situations we find ourselves in. I plan to use holloware techniques within a sculptural format, possibly combined with clay and other materials to achieve these images.

Fabric Constructions, Joanna Dunkin May 1983

Fabric Constructions, Joanna Dunkin

Theses

The artist is not simply a passive reflector of his or her world, but a dynamic creator of it. I have tried to expand and enrich my experience rather than merely duplicate it. The world I create is of planes, volumes, spatial sequences, and some familiar architectural elements such as stairs and boxes. By using the above mentioned elements, a number of interlocking and highly ordered spatial relation ships have resulted. An interlocking spatial relationship consists of two spaces whose fields overlap to form a zone of shared space. When two spaces interlock their volumes in this manner, each retains …

A Limited Comparison Of Ultraviolet Curing And Convection Drying On Paper Permanence, Nancy Bittner May 1983

A Limited Comparison Of Ultraviolet Curing And Convection Drying On Paper Permanence, Nancy Bittner

Theses

Archivists, conservators and librarians are concerned with paper permanence. Tests have shown that paper permanence is affected by light (especially ultra violet), temperature and humidity changes, acidity, in sects and rodents, and by general use. Environmental damages are often insidious. The objective of this study is to find whether ultraviolet curing and evaporative drying as experienced in the printing industry would affect paper permanence. Glen G. Gray's procedure for finding the reaction rate (the rate at which chemical reactions are completed) of paper is followed. This method relies on the fact that a chemical reaction occurs at speeds which depend …

Effect Of Plate Surface Characteristics On Image Reproduction In Electrostatic Planographic Platemaking, Sung Jae Lee May 1983

Effect Of Plate Surface Characteristics On Image Reproduction In Electrostatic Planographic Platemaking, Sung Jae Lee

Theses

Four different types of surfaces of aluminum plates; 1) brush grained, 2) chemically grained, 3) brush grained and anodized, and 4) electrochemical ly grained and anodized substrates coated with polyvinyl oxazol, an organic photoconductor were studied. The experiments were divided into two parts. The first part concerned with the photoelectric characteristics of the various surfaces, and the second part was involved with image quality relative to photoelectric properties of different substrates. The characteristics of each of the surfaces was briefly discussed. Photoelectric properties such as 1) photosensitivity, 2) spectral response, 3) surface acceptance potential, 4) dark decay, 5) light decay, …

A Performance Evaluation Of Rounded And Backed Books Vs. Square Backed Books, David Harlan Parisi May 1983

A Performance Evaluation Of Rounded And Backed Books Vs. Square Backed Books, David Harlan Parisi

Theses

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the performance of rounded and backed books against books left square backed. The variables which are introduced into the study will enable the results to provide needed information on the performance of the many different binding constructions librarians and library binders are confronted with. Rounding and backing is an optional operation when binding a book, an operation which is sometimes by-passed on smaller books. A book that is not rounded and backed is square backed. It is suspected that rounding and backing a book will indeed enhance its performance and durability, therefore …

An Application Of Multi-Dimensional Scaling To The Re-Examination Of Preferred Tone Reproduction, David J. Porter May 1983

An Application Of Multi-Dimensional Scaling To The Re-Examination Of Preferred Tone Reproduction, David J. Porter

Theses

Black and white prints were produced of several scenes that varied in both negative contrast and negative exposure. Subjects rated the various prints by categories based on their own personal understanding of what an excellent print was. The boundaries of the categories were found and used to determine the preferred tone reproduction characteristics. Individual differences were also scaled with the use of a proximity measure determined from the categorical data. The preferred contrast (1.46 +0.24) was significantly higher than the contrast that has been found to be preferred in earlier studies. The application of this study to more general situations …

Brushwork On Bowls, Elizabeth Gordon May 1983

Brushwork On Bowls, Elizabeth Gordon

Theses

I intend to develop a series of pieces involving brushwork. My primary investigation will be figure -ground, color, and abstraction from nature. Brushwork will be chosen as the technique of mark making, because of its physical properties, i.e. stroke depth, energy, shape creating ability, and line quality. It is also chosen for its potential to evoke a sense of lyricism.

Synthesis Of 1-Aryl-3-Pyrazolidinones Through 3-(2'-Arylaminoethyl)-1,4,2-Dioxide-5-One Intermediates, David G. Lincoln May 1983

Synthesis Of 1-Aryl-3-Pyrazolidinones Through 3-(2'-Arylaminoethyl)-1,4,2-Dioxide-5-One Intermediates, David G. Lincoln

Theses

A new preparation of 1-arylpyrazolidinones, not involving the prior preparation of arylhydrazines , is reported. The reaction of 3-arylaminopropiono hydroxamic acids with chloroformates gives the title compounds. This transformation is discussed in terms of the intermediacy of the corresponding l,4,2-dioxazol-5-one ring system. These intermediates undergo mild nitrogen-atom induced decomposition with simultaneous N-N bond formation. The effects of chloroformates and aryl substitution is discussed.

Dream Images, John Nasif Samaha May 1983

Dream Images, John Nasif Samaha

Theses

Please seek out the real purpose of this report in the photographs. It is with these images that I have tried to communicate what I have thought, felt, and dreamt. My work is experimental in technique. The images are created as fantasies juxtaposed with the tradition of design, figure, line, planes of dimension, and overall composition. By using color materials in a non-conventional way, I am exploring the range of photographic possibilities with color, form, drama, emotion, mystery, and life. Photography functions beautifully for these narrative elements because of its ability to transform a real event into something mysterious, removed …

Intimations, Scot Bennett May 1983

Intimations, Scot Bennett

Theses

The concentration in this thesis will not necessarily focus on the print as an isolated wholistic art-form, but rather present the print as an intrinsic part of some other whole . Practically the purpose will be to manually and visually transport the viewer from a present environment to another; one in which he may hopefully identify. The works will be multi-media ones inclusive of and related to the techniques of printmaking (intaglio and lithography) .

Natural Shelters, Habitable Landscapes, Joseph Vitone May 1983

Natural Shelters, Habitable Landscapes, Joseph Vitone

Theses

The purpose of this thesis will be to try to share with you an energy and character that I find in trees, in the earth, in the qualities of light, in the intimacy of houses and yards. There is a simple yet deep-running link between our created spaces (our homes) and the spirit and body of the woods. I feel a strong kinship between myself and the land that produced me- -a super-blood tie, a joining from long ago--that transcends anthropocentric thought and concern. I want to know that link, to be at ease with the earth and to extend …

Micro-Circuit Reticle Fabrication: An Investigation Of A Silver Halide Emulsion As A Portable Conformable Mask, Patrick St. Cin Apr 1983

Micro-Circuit Reticle Fabrication: An Investigation Of A Silver Halide Emulsion As A Portable Conformable Mask, Patrick St. Cin

Theses

An investigation of the possibility of spin-coating a silver halide emusion similar to that used on Kodak HRP plates onto a positive resist coating reticle blank was made. By changing the cating weight and temperature of the emulsion it was found that the emulsion could be coated onto the reticle without harm to the positive resist material. A five micron width line was imaged successfully and measured in the final chrome sub-layer of the reticle.
