The Computer As A Tool In The Ethical Development Of Primary School Children, Nancy B. Landau May 1987

The Computer As A Tool In The Ethical Development Of Primary School Children, Nancy B. Landau

Theses

When I first thought about my thesis topic at the end of last year, I had a very different concept from what eventually developed into this project. My original intention, that of using the computer as an educational tool in the ethical and social development of primary school children, has remained the same. The changes occurred in my methods of achieving this intention. My rationale for promoting the computer as an educational resource is manifold. For example, the world that these children will be entering as adults will be entirely computerized and automated. This next generation must have more than …

Computer Imagery And Creative Energy, Linda K. Saxton May 1987

Computer Imagery And Creative Energy, Linda K. Saxton

Theses

During the creative process energy becomes manifest through some form, be it nature, people, thought, or object. Individuals can expreience and absorb this energy directly through awareness of the subtle energy body and by developing its inner technology or system of energy centers and channels for the purpose of revitalizing body and mind and for transforming consciousness. It was my intent in this thesis to develop a videotape that would extend knowledge about, provide an experience of, and be an expression of creativity as the flow and manifestation of higher creative energy, higher referring to levels of refinement, the highest …

A Performance Comparison Between A Wide-Hinged Endpaper Construction And The Library Binding Institute Standard Endpaper Construction, Claudia Chaback May 1987

A Performance Comparison Between A Wide-Hinged Endpaper Construction And The Library Binding Institute Standard Endpaper Construction, Claudia Chaback

Theses

For the last fifty years , library binders have employed a standard endpaper construction for all of its bindings. Now, because of new binding techniques and the deterioration of paper some preservationists have placed a demand on library binders to develop an alternate endpaper construction. The purpose of this study was to determine the hinge strength and openability performance of the two most conmon library binding techniques, oversewing and Singer side sewing, which were flat backed and rounded/backed in relation to the currently used the LBI Standard endpaper as compared to the wide-hinged endpaper construction. It was questioned if there …

An Investigation Of The Performance Of Gray-Component Replacement, Melissa Berry Tolmie May 1987

An Investigation Of The Performance Of Gray-Component Replacement, Melissa Berry Tolmie

Theses

Members of the graphic arts industries are slowly becoming aware of undercolor reduction techniques used in the attempt to help stabilize high speed wet printing. Undercolor removal is a color correction method which follows this line of thought as it reduces the amount of ink coverage by the process-color inks and increases ink coverage of the black printer in the darker neutral areas of a reproduction. The advantages realized by this technique are carried even further with gray-component replacement (GCR) . GCR removes the process color inks that make up a dark tone and replaces them with black ink in …

A Study Of Toray's Negative Working Driographic Printing Plate And The Effect Ink Tack Has On Toning In The Non-Image Area, Larry M. Capitano May 1987

A Study Of Toray's Negative Working Driographic Printing Plate And The Effect Ink Tack Has On Toning In The Non-Image Area, Larry M. Capitano

Theses

Driography is a planographic printing process. A driographic printing plate differs from a conventional offset lithographic plate in that water is not required to keep the non-image area clean of ink during printing. Water, or fountain solution, is not required during printing because a silicone rubber coating which repels ink is used for the non-image area of a driographic plate. The first driographic plate was introduced in the early 1970's by the 3M Company. The plate was a positive working printing plate and has since been discontinued. Driography has since been researched by a number of companies but only one …

Investigation Of The Accuracy Of Array Radiometry For Measuring Pulsed Radiation Sources, K.W. Farrell May 1987

Investigation Of The Accuracy Of Array Radiometry For Measuring Pulsed Radiation Sources, K.W. Farrell

Theses

Due to the recent advent of diode arrays and their subsequent use in radiometers, there has been some discussion about the accuracy of using diode array radiometry in the measurement of pulsed and flash sources. In order to determine whether or not diode array radiometers are accurate instruments for measuring these sources, a Tracor Northern TN-1710 radiometer, which uses a diode array, and a conventional, single channel Optronic 730A radiometer were used to measure three sources. These three sources consisted of a 45 watt tungsten-halogen lamp pulsed with an optical chopper.- a cathode ray tube (CRT) and a xenon flash. …

Mosaic In Paper, Caroline M. Howell May 1987

Mosaic In Paper, Caroline M. Howell

Theses

"Mosaic In Paper" is a synthesis of lithographs, photo etchings, and woodcuts designed on the Macintosh Plus computer then transferred to these processes through Xerox copies or laser print-offs. The concept of the piece stems from the Byzantine mosaics and Gothic rose windows I saw in Europe while living and studying in Italy four years ago, as well as a brief study of Oriental rugs while designing the work. The piece is intended to show harmony between the technology of today and the tradition of these ancient art mediums.

Automated Segmentation Of Urban Features From Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery For Use In Pseudoinvariant Feature Temporal Image Normalization, Carl Salvaggio May 1987

Automated Segmentation Of Urban Features From Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery For Use In Pseudoinvariant Feature Temporal Image Normalization, Carl Salvaggio

Theses

An automated segmentation algorithm for the isolation of pseudoinvariant features was developed. This algorithm utilizes rate-of-change information from the thresholding process previously associated with the pseudoinvariant feature normalization technique. This algorithm was combined with the normalization technique and applied to the six reflective bands of the Landsat Thematic Mapper for both urban and rural imagery. The segmentation algorithm and normalization technique were also applied to color infrared high resolution U2 imagery. The accuracy and precision of the normalization results were evaluated. The technique consistently produced normalization results with errors of approximately one or two reflectance units for both the rural …

Thermal Degradation Of Polymer Blends Containing The Poly(Hydryoxy Ether Of Bisphenol-A), Joseph S. Formosa May 1987

Thermal Degradation Of Polymer Blends Containing The Poly(Hydryoxy Ether Of Bisphenol-A), Joseph S. Formosa

Theses

The thermal degradation of blends of phenoxy with polycaprolactone , poly ( 1 , 4-butylene adipate), poly(l,4-cyclohexane-dimethylene succinate), poly( 2 , 2-dimethyl-l , 3-propylene succinate), and poly( hexamethylene sebacate) has been studied using thermogravimetric analysis, direct-pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy. For each blend, the polyester componenent was less thermally stable in the blend compared to the pure state. The thermal stability of the phenoxy was not affected by the presence of the polyesters in the blends. Blends of phenoxy with polycaprolactone and with poly ( 1 , 4-butylene adipate) degrade in two-step mechanisms where the amount of weight loss …

A New Imaging Material Utilizing Exposure Induced Free Radical Reduction Of Stabilized Soluble Metal Salts, Patrick Friedman Apr 1987

A New Imaging Material Utilizing Exposure Induced Free Radical Reduction Of Stabilized Soluble Metal Salts, Patrick Friedman

Theses

A new non-silver halide imaging material is proposed. The light sensitive element within the material generates free radicals upon exposure, through a fragmentation process. The free radicals, which can be generated imagewise, are then used as a catalyst to promote the reduction of an image forming element. The image forming element is a stabilized, soluble, metal salt which is chelated rendering it unaccessible for reduction by the atmosphere. The film matrix is virtually grain-free as is the final image, with some dependence on the binder and amplification process employed.

A Study Of The Brain's Transfer Function For Edge Perception, Charles G. Fink Apr 1987

A Study Of The Brain's Transfer Function For Edge Perception, Charles G. Fink

Theses

A concept was developed and a computer program was designed and implemented to model the eye, the brain, and the perception system. These models were used to study edge transformation through the human visual system. The eye model was developed using optical spread and neural sampling data along with different inhibition distributions. The effects of lateral inhibition on retinal edge response were studied and hypothetical brain transfer functions were calculated. The results of this study indicate that no single mechanism or linear model can explain both the sinewave response and edge perception for the human visual system. The eye and …

The Effect Of Solid Ink Density On Shifts In Hue In Gray Component Replacement, Hans P. Kellogg Apr 1987

The Effect Of Solid Ink Density On Shifts In Hue In Gray Component Replacement, Hans P. Kellogg

Theses

With advances in computer storage and electronic dot generation scanners a new color separation process has become possible. Although in theory the Gray Component Replacement (GCR) process has been possible since the early twenties, it has only recently been available through contemporary color separation methods. GCR is the process by which the gray component of a particular color reproduction is removed from the reproduction and replaced with black ink. The gray component is defined as specific combinations of the least predominant color and the other remaining inks. A printing form was designed to include three different color reproduction processes: the …

A Finite Element Solution Of Thermal Wave Propagation In Elastic Media, Dominic N. Dalo Apr 1987

A Finite Element Solution Of Thermal Wave Propagation In Elastic Media, Dominic N. Dalo

Theses

The rational theory of thermodynamics is used to develop equations governing the propagation of thermal waves. A new vector quantity is introduced to account for the thermal waves. The phenomenon of thermal wave propagation is illustrated by considering the problem of one-dimensional heat conduction in a finite slab subjected to a heat flux pulse. The solution is obtained via the finite element method. A discussion of the results and their significance is also presented.

A Study To Determine The Amount Of Fountain Solution On A Lithographic Plate, Robert G. Beaverson Feb 1987

A Study To Determine The Amount Of Fountain Solution On A Lithographic Plate, Robert G. Beaverson

Theses

Even though lithography has been in use for several hundred years, the process has many mysteries which science has been unable to answer. One of these mysteries is the physical measurement of the amount of lithographic fountain solution wetting a lithographic plate. In the past, subjective means were used to determine the relative amount of fountain solution on a lithographic plate. This thesis deals with a proposed method of determining the amount of lithographic fountain solution applied to a lithographic plate surface, both image and non-image areas. The method utilizes the I.G.T. Printability Tester by spreading a predetermined amount of …
