An Anamorphic Imaging Model To Correct Geometric Distortion In Planar Holographic Stereograms, Michael Darwin Rainsdon Jan 1989

An Anamorphic Imaging Model To Correct Geometric Distortion In Planar Holographic Stereograms, Michael Darwin Rainsdon

Theses

This thesis demonstrates the importance of an accurate imaging model for making holographic stereograms by evaluating the geometric perspective distortion that is seen in flat holographic stereograms made using a circularly symmetric imaging model. A correct anamorphic imaging model for flat holographic stereograms is discussed and the limitations of the new model are explored. An implementation of the anamorphic imaging model as a computer system for creating geometric distortion-free holographic stereograms IS described. Holographic stereograms were made using the computer system. A comparison is made of the uncorrected and corrected holographic stereograms. From viewing these holographic stereograms it is apparent …

Situation Analysis And Promotion Plan For Cushman Interiors, Caroline Mclver Pendleton-Hillmar Jan 1989

Situation Analysis And Promotion Plan For Cushman Interiors, Caroline Mclver Pendleton-Hillmar

Theses

The quality, price and availability of a product (or company) are only important to consumers if they have a need for that product and if they are aware that the product exists. Advertising and promotion make the consumer aware that something is offered to them. Without consumer awareness nothing is sold.

In order to effectively create consumer awareness, an advertiser must know the mood of the buying public, the competitors, and the industry. Through organized gathering of information advertising and promotion may be developed so that consumers may be reached, advertising created, and products sold. This is true of any …

Apocalypse And Fortune - Digest, Lila M. Held Jan 1989

Apocalypse And Fortune - Digest, Lila M. Held

Theses

The premise upon which this study is based is that German Expressionist art has undergone an expansion in marketability, and aesthetic recognition during the past decade. German Expressionism is defined as an art of protest, an art that expressed its fundamental precepts visually through distortion, brutal images, and the emotive use of color and form.

I chose to use Ludwig Meidner to exemplify the characteristics of the movement. The basic tenets of Expressionism are apparent in both Meidner's visual and literary endeavors. Ten years ago, this artist's name and work were obscure. Today, his art appears in galleries, his name …

Expressive Arts Manual For Children Of Divorce, Monica Moffet Jan 1989

Expressive Arts Manual For Children Of Divorce, Monica Moffet

Theses

This manuscript examines the short-term and long-term reactions and adjustment of children of divorce. Interventions which are available and have been utilized in the schools, community and therapy are reviewed. The limitations and specifications of these interventions point to the need for an intervention that has multiple uses for a variety of settings and ages. A creative arts activity manual has been developed which may be used in individual, group therapy work or for support group or time-limited types of intervention. Forty activities for children (ages 3-18) address divorce issues and feelings. The manual was evaluated by 20 professionals. The …

Investigation Of Substructuring Principles In The Finite Element Analysis Of An Automotive Space Structure, John E. Martin Jan 1989

Investigation Of Substructuring Principles In The Finite Element Analysis Of An Automotive Space Structure, John E. Martin

Theses

The efficiency of using substructuring in the dynamic analysis of small models is examined by using a university version of ANSYS to perform a series of four case studies on a small, 648 degree of freedom model. The model is based upon the monocoque center section for an automotive space structure and was constructed using STTF 63 plate elements. In each case study, the model was divided into a different substructure configuration. In the configurations used, the model was divided into one, two, three and four substructures, respectively. In each case study, a series of modal analyses was performed for …

Structural Aspects Of Bis(Quadridentate)Zirconium(Iv) Complexes, Brian P. Cleary Jan 1989

Structural Aspects Of Bis(Quadridentate)Zirconium(Iv) Complexes, Brian P. Cleary

Theses

The synthesis of bis(quadridentate)-zirconium (IV) complexes was completed of which two new complexes, bis(N,N'-disalicylidene-cis-1,2,diamino-cyclohexane( zirconium (IV) and bis(N,N'disalicylidene-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane)zirconium(IV), were deemed suitable for physical and chemical comparisons to bis(N,N'-disalicylidene-1,2-phenylenediamino)-zirconium(IV). Using H-NMR spectroscopy at low temperatures, it was determined that the interconversion of the cyclohexane moiety of bis(N,N'disalicylidene-cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane) zirconium(IV) begins to slow whereas, the motions associated with the backbones of the other two complexes do not. Furthermore, using H-NMR spectroscopy, it was determined that heating solutions of pairs of the complexes for four days at 155 C causes the complex to exchange ligands to form mixed-ligand complexes.

Performance Issues In Mid-Sized Relational Database Machines, Larry Sullivan Jan 1989

Performance Issues In Mid-Sized Relational Database Machines, Larry Sullivan

Theses

Relational database systems have provided end users and application programmers with an improved working environment over older hierarchial and networked database systems. End users now use interactive query languages to inspect and manage their data. And application programs are easier to write and maintain due to the separation of physical data storage information from the application program itself. These and other benefits do not come without a price however. System resource consumption has long been the perceived problem with relational systems. The additional resource demands usually force computing sites to upgrade existing systems or add additional facilities. One method of …

The Task Distribution Preprocessor (Tdp), Frank Mccanna Jan 1989

The Task Distribution Preprocessor (Tdp), Frank Mccanna

Theses

This document describes a software processor used to generate portable and efficient multiprocess programs that run on UNIX operating systems. The processor is designed to be a convenient method for converting single process C programs into distributed multiprocess C programs. Another goal is to have the processor used as a "back"end or "platform" for multitasking languages and code generators. Efficiency is targeted toward multiprocessor systems that provide facilities for sharing physical memory between processes running on separate CPUs. Portability is achieved with the use of the highly portable UNIX operating system and its companion C language. The C language is …

Implementation Of A Modula 2 Subset Compiler Supporting A 'C' Language Interface Using Commonly Available Unix Tools, Raymond Shear F. Jan 1989

Implementation Of A Modula 2 Subset Compiler Supporting A 'C' Language Interface Using Commonly Available Unix Tools, Raymond Shear F.

Theses

Modula 2 has been proposed as an appropriate language for systems programming. Smaller than PASCAL but more structured than 'C\ Modula 2 is intended to be relatively easy to implement. A realization of a subset of Modula 2 for the MC68010 microprocessor is presented. Widely available UNIX tools and the 'C language are used for the implementation. A mechanism for calling 'C language functions from Modula 2 (and vice versa) is suggested. Critical source code, grammar, and an extensive bibliography pertinent to the implementation are included as appendices.

A Natural Language Interface To Ms-Dos, Donna Indovina Blodgett Jan 1989

A Natural Language Interface To Ms-Dos, Donna Indovina Blodgett

Theses

The goal of this thesis was to design and implement a dialog facility to assist novice users of the MS-DOS operating system. A small natural language interface facility called PE-DOS (Plain English DOS) was built, which serves as a front end for a subset of simple MS-DOS commands. PE-DOS accepts English-like terminology and translates it into the appropriate MS-DOS command using a system of recursive transition networks (RTNs). The translated command then is presented to the user along with an English paraphrase of the user's input sentence in an effort to provide confirmation for the intended command in both English …

Hops: A Hierarchical/Object-Oriented Programming Environment System, Ryuichiro Kodama Jan 1989

Hops: A Hierarchical/Object-Oriented Programming Environment System, Ryuichiro Kodama

Theses

The concept of object-oriented programming is becoming an important paradigm in which programmers represent and solve problems. HOPS (Hierarchical / Object-oriented Programming Environment System), developed in this thesis project, employs this concept to represent and manipulate the resources of a programming environment. All the resource objects (such as files, directories, simple integer data and so on) are hierarchically arranged for easy access and management, as the user moves through a tree structure just as in the UNIX file system. HOPL (Hierarchical / Object-oriented Programming Language), whose grammar is similar to C language, has been designed so that the expression of …

Statemaster: A User Interface Management System Based On Statecharts, Pierre Wellner Jan 1989

Statemaster: A User Interface Management System Based On Statecharts, Pierre Wellner

Theses

Designing and implementing a user interface (UI) is among the costliest tasks in developing interactive software systems. As a result, much work is being done in the area of User Interface Management Systems (UIMSs). These systems make it easier to develop complex user interfaces more quickly because specification of user interface dialogs is at a closer level to that at which UI designers express themselves. This paper describes the generic structure of a UIMS and several examples of previous work in the field. Many UIMSs are implemented as explicit state machines that use conventional state transition diagrams or state metaphors …

Amused: A Multi-User Software Environment Diagnostic, Mary Ann Foltman Jan 1989

Amused: A Multi-User Software Environment Diagnostic, Mary Ann Foltman

Theses

As software projects grow in size and complexity, many individuals take over the responsibilities for one project, creating a potential for new errors in the development process. Software version inconsistency, unfamiliarity with the tools used, and software tool restrictions are but some of the problems encountered in a multi-programmer environment. These problems are not always self-evident to the programmer and may require a dedicated software support representative or experienced programmers to assist. These problems can be reduced through the development of a multi-user software environment diagnostic expert system, AMUSED (A Multi-User Software Environment Diagnostic). The AMUSED expert system is designed …

A Statistical Approach To Formant Tracking, Robert T. Gayvert Jan 1989

A Statistical Approach To Formant Tracking, Robert T. Gayvert

Theses

This thesis investigates a statistical approach to tracking formant trajectories in continuous speech. In this approach a probability measure is applied to a set of features extracted from each analysis frame of the speech signal, and a conditional mean estimate is used to determine formant frequency values. The features used can be vector quantization symbols, spectrum levels, or other sets of features related to formant frequencies. Continuity constraints can be applied via either simple smoothing algorithms or hidden Markov models. An example of this technique using a multivariate probability measure on LPC spectral values is examined in detail. A second …

Vowel Recognition In Continuous Speech, Darrell C. Stam Jan 1989

Vowel Recognition In Continuous Speech, Darrell C. Stam

Theses

In continuous speech, the identification of phonemes requires the ability to extract features that are capable of characterizing the acoustic signal. Previous work has shown that relatively high classification accuracy can be obtained from a single spectrum taken during the steady-state portion of the phoneme, assuming that the phonetic environment is held constant. The present study represents an attempt to extend this work to variable phonetic contexts by using dynamic rather than static spectral information. This thesis has four aims: 1) Classify vowels in continuous speech; 2) Find the optimal set of features that best describe the vowel regions; 3) …

Automatic Formant Labeling In Continuous Speech, Elizabeth A. Richards Jan 1989

Automatic Formant Labeling In Continuous Speech, Elizabeth A. Richards

Theses

This thesis was developed out of a need to reduce the time required to correct Linear Predictive Code (LPC) data used for training a formant tracker. A program was written to select peaks from LPC data and interpret them as Fl, F2, and F3, using knowledge about the phonetic transcription, the sex of the speaker, knowledge about individual phonemes, and a few heuristics. The system was tested on a database of eight speakers, four male and four female, each of whom produced ten sentences. This data set comprised 1,011 resonant phonemes covering 17,363 5-msec. frames. Overall the system correctly matched …

Effects Of Irradiation On The Rate Of Water Vapor Transmission Of Food Packaging Materials, Reginald L. A. Vas Jan 1989

Effects Of Irradiation On The Rate Of Water Vapor Transmission Of Food Packaging Materials, Reginald L. A. Vas

Theses

Food can be preserved by irradiation which is the exposure of food to ionising radiation, high energy electron from electron beams or X-rays or gamma rays from Cobalt-60 or Cesium-137 radioisotopes. Irradiation does not leave a residue in the food and it does not make it radioactive. The low level energy levels of Cobalt and Cesium isotopic gamma rays does not induce any radioactivity. Irradiation has the same preservative effect on food as heat treatment, but because irradiation does not appreciably raise the temperature of the food, it is known as 'cold sterilization'.

Irradiation can potentially be used to preserve …

Geneplanner: A Prototype Of An Expert System To Assist With Chemical Dna Gene Synthesis Planning, Marilyn Daum Jan 1989

Geneplanner: A Prototype Of An Expert System To Assist With Chemical Dna Gene Synthesis Planning, Marilyn Daum

Theses

Expert systems are a popular area of artificial intelligence. The development of an expert system involves the selection of an appropriate problem, acquisition of knowledge from the expert, selection of control mechanisms and knowledge repre sentations, selection of tools, implementation, and testing. This thesis describes the development of a prototype expert system in the area of genetic engineering. The prototype system suggests the fragments of DNA to chemically synthesize and the steps for joining these fragments in order to make a gene. The system follows the hueristic rules of an expert to select the fragments and strategy for synthesis, backtracking …

Coach: A Two Level Expert Planning Assistant For High School Football, Gary F. Hasman

Theses

This thesis describes a two level expert planning system that first helps to develop a game plan for a high school football game and then aids in the selection of plays during that game. Built using Rulemaster, an expert system development tool, the system, called COACH, is initially provided observed data through the answering of questions which represents the receiving of a scouting report. This information is stored in a data file for further use. Also created during this questioning period is a data file containing comparisons of key players on the offense against their counterparts on the opponent's defensive …

Intelligent Knowledge Acquisition System, Bong-Soo Youn Jan 1989

Intelligent Knowledge Acquisition System, Bong-Soo Youn

Theses

IKAS (Intelligent Knowledge Acquisition System) is an expert system building shell with a machine-assisted concept checker for easy integrated rule-entry. Unlike most expert system shells currently available, IKAS not only performs rule syntax checking, but also maintains semantic integration of the knowledge base by using a Concept Base. The Concept Base is incrementally grown during the cycle of expert system application development and safeguards the whole domain from conceptually conflicting rules by finding possible inconsistencies or duplications of concepts and giving recommendations for possible solutions. Also automatic generalized concept forming using the Inductive Extension Generalization method gives IKAS a capability …

Computing The Chromatic Number Of T-(V,K,[Lambda]) Designs, Nancy M. Schornstein Jan 1989

Computing The Chromatic Number Of T-(V,K,[Lambda]) Designs, Nancy M. Schornstein

Theses

Colouring t-designs has previously been shown to be an NP-complete problem; heuristics and a practical algorithm for this problem were developed for this thesis; the algorithm was then employed to find the chromatic numbers of the sixteen non- isomorphic 2-(25, 4, 1) designs and the four cyclic 2-(19, 3, 1) designs. This thesis additionally examines the existing literature on colouring and finding chromatic numbers of t-designs.

Detecting Errors In Software Using A Parameter Checker: An Analysis, John Sexton A. Jan 1989

Detecting Errors In Software Using A Parameter Checker: An Analysis, John Sexton A.

Theses

This paper will discuss a study of parameter errors that occurred in a software product developed using the "C" language. Through the use of a parameter checker that was developed from an existing compiler, the frequency and type of parameter errors over several releases of an application are studied. In addition to parameter checking, other static analysis data was collected concerning function usage (or non-usage) and function return value comparisons. This paper may serve as a useful complement to previous static analyses done for the FORTRA, COBOL and Pascal languages. The study presents statistics that show the large number of …

Congestion Control Schemes And Their Effect On A Hypothetical Network, Jeffrey S. Reifsteck Jan 1989

Congestion Control Schemes And Their Effect On A Hypothetical Network, Jeffrey S. Reifsteck

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to allow data communication students to experiment with various congestion control schemes to see how they will affect a simulated network. Using various parameters, the user can design a full duplex, packet switched, point-topoint virtual circuit network. Then, using this network the student can choose a congestion control scheme and run the simulation. After each run the parameter(s), the control scheme, or both, can be changed and the simulation rerun to see what the changes will do to network performance.

A Simulated Shape Recognition System Using Feature Extraction, Wendy Pan Jan 1989

A Simulated Shape Recognition System Using Feature Extraction, Wendy Pan

Theses

A simulated shape recognition system using feature extraction was built as an aid for designing robot vision systems. The simulation allows the user to study the effects of image resolution and feature selection on the performance of a vision system that tries to identify unknown 2-D objects. Performance issues that can be studied include identification accuracy and recognition speed as functions of resolution and the size and makeup of the feature set. Two approaches to feature selection were studied as was a nearest neighbor classification algorithm based on Mahalanobis distances. Using a pool of ten objects and twelve features, the …

Ada And The Graphical Kernel System, Richard R. Wessman Jan 1989

Ada And The Graphical Kernel System, Richard R. Wessman

Theses

Since the introduction of the standard language in 1983, Ada has been the subject of controversy about its capabilities and its desirability. Proponents have claimed that Ada may be the ultimate computer language because it is a high-level, structured language that may be used in applications ranging from controlling jet fighters to business. Detractors have argued that Ada's very versatility may be its undoing because it can do many things but not as well as more specialized languages. This thesis attempts to evaluate the capabilities and suitability of Ada for large projects by using it to implement the Graphical Kernel …
