Painting Perceptions, Jacqueline Domin
Painting Perceptions, Jacqueline Domin
Theses
The computer is a multidisciplinary tool engaging all the senses. Creating with color, light, and motion is a rich visual experience enhanced by the vibrations of sound. These vibrations, both light and sound, are absorbed by the viewer and influence his experience. This makes the computer a profoundly different medium than the static arts. Artist have powerful tools with which to create experiences - paint perceptions. As a painter, creating rich visual relationships has been a focus for many years. Exploring the computer as an image making tool is different than using it for graphic design. It has taken years …
On Axial Vibration Of A Web-Idle Roller System, Richard Bomba
On Axial Vibration Of A Web-Idle Roller System, Richard Bomba
Theses
A typical continuous web-processing machine consists of hundreds of idle rollers and web spans. A web span is formed by tensioning a thin film (the web) over at least two idle rollers. Machine drive controls, bearing friction, and air impingement on the web surface represent some of the factors that can influence web tension and web speed. A significant effort is devoted to maintaining uniform web tension and web speed in these machines. The uniformity of these parameters is a requirement to consistently manufacture web products within rigorous quality specifications. In support of this effort to control web tension and …

Expressing Imaging Algorithms Using A C++ Based Image Algebra Programming Environment, Davender Nath Gupta
Theses
Homogeneous Image Algebra is used as the basis for an image processing environment that uses the image, instead of the pixel, as the fundamental unit being manipulated. The object-oriented language C++ is used to implement the environment. Examples of applications are that include filtering, region growing, skeletonization, Fourier Transforms and Hadamard transforms are presented. This thesis concludes that C++ does have several features which are of great benefit in implementing image processing algorithms.
Color Ink-Jet Printing: Evaluation Of Print Quality On Different Paper Substrates, Srikumaran Asokan
Color Ink-Jet Printing: Evaluation Of Print Quality On Different Paper Substrates, Srikumaran Asokan
Theses
Ink-jet printing has gained a dominant position among the technology choices for "on demand" generation of color hard copies from the computer. Reduction of ink-related problems, low cost, improved resolution, and less-demanding substrate requirements have become important advantages. This study's primary objective is to evaluate, both subjectively and objectively, the effect of various paper properties on the quality of print obtained from a color ink-jet printer. The initial stage of this investigation involved a subjective evaluation of the different prints by a panel of observers. A dual scaling analysis of the subjective responses indicates that for the paper substrates selected, …
To Determine The Drying Rate And The Rewettability Characteristics Of Water Based Flexographic News Inks, Parthasarathy Varadarajan
To Determine The Drying Rate And The Rewettability Characteristics Of Water Based Flexographic News Inks, Parthasarathy Varadarajan
Theses
A major problem in the printing of newsprint by flexography with water-based inks is the filling-in of halftones. Drying of the ink and rewettability, the ability of the fresh ink to wet the dried ink, appear to be primary in the understanding of the filling-in problems. Quantification and qualification of critical factors are essential in resolving this problem. In this study black water based flexographic news inks from different manufacturers were compared in terms of their drying and rewettability characteristics. The change in weight with time and contact angle measurements are the response parameters considered. Proper care has been exercised …
Analysis Of Color Variation During Four-Color Offset Lithographic Press Runs By Monitoring Changes In Three-Filter Density Values Of Overprint Tints, Curtis L. Smith
Analysis Of Color Variation During Four-Color Offset Lithographic Press Runs By Monitoring Changes In Three-Filter Density Values Of Overprint Tints, Curtis L. Smith
Theses
A densitometric method of monitoring color variation during four-color offset lithographic press runs is proposed. Once an 'OK' press sheet has been approved for the run, a standard color reference is established with which successive sheet pulls can be compared. In order to develop an accurate and repeatable system for monitoring and controlling color variation, densitometric analysis of three color overprinted tints can be utilized. In relation to the OK sheet, changes in the three-filter density readings measured at specific points across successive press sheets, indicate the visual change in color hue and strength that occurs during the press run. …

A Quantitative Analysis Of A Self-Emitting Thermal Ir Scene Simulation System, James S. Warnick
Theses
A quantitative evaluation is performed in which the imaging characteristics of a selfemitting thermal infrared scene simulation system are analyzed. The simulation system is comprised of an energy source (an Argon laser), optics, a spatial light modulator for image generation in the visible wavelength energy, and an transducer for conversion of the visible wavelength energy image to a thermal IR image. After construction of the simulation system, the performance of the simulation system and its components is analyzed by measurement of : (1) the Modulation Transfer Function, (2) the temporal response, (3) the maximum thermal contrast, and (4) the Noise …
An Optimization Model For Selecting The Economical Cutting Parameters In An External Forward Turning Operation, Rose Bothner
An Optimization Model For Selecting The Economical Cutting Parameters In An External Forward Turning Operation, Rose Bothner
Theses
This study develops software that provides optimum lathe cutting conditions for specific materials and parameters. This is accomplished by developing a model, based on empirical and analytical relationships, which estimates the optimum cutting conditions, (i.e. spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut) for a single pass, external turning operation. These parameters are optimized to yield the minimum production cost, while satisfying constraints imposed by workpiece specifications and equipment limitations. The equipment limitations considered include the available machine power, maximum workholding force of the lathe, range of spindle speeds, feed rates for the lathe and tool, and the range of …

Study Of Marketing Techniques Involving Color And Texture Associations As Used In Book Publishing, Roxanne Mcclanahan
Study Of Marketing Techniques Involving Color And Texture Associations As Used In Book Publishing, Roxanne Mcclanahan
Theses
Books can send messages to reach the subconscious levels of the reader's mind. These subconscious messages are learned associations from past experiences that use color and texture as means of expression. This perception is not with the eyes, but more with the observer's mind. Therefore, when the book buyer is browsing in a bookstore and the suggestion that one experiences from looking at the book does not match one's subconscious message, the book is quickly put down. The principal object of this study is the effect of color and texture used in cover design of books on the subconscious mind …

Conformational Studies Of Carboxymethylcellulose In Aqueous Saline Solutions As A Function Of Ionic Strength, Donna M. Marcera
Conformational Studies Of Carboxymethylcellulose In Aqueous Saline Solutions As A Function Of Ionic Strength, Donna M. Marcera
Theses
The conformation of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) in salt solutions was studied using viscometry, light scattering and gel permeation chromatography. From the viscosity data, the conformation of CMC in aqueous saline solutions was determined to be elliptical. At high ionic strengths, for example 2.5N NaCl, the macromolecule collapses upon itself. The gel permeation chromatography data indicated the presence of large molecular weight CMC particles (~2 x 109 daltons). The light scattering data also showed the presence of large CMC particles. The presence of large CMC particles explains the change in concentration dependence of the viscosity data between low and high CMC concentrations. …

Treatment Of Trucking Station Wastewater By Two-Phase Anaerobic Digestion System And Rotating Biological Contactor, Tzu-Wen Uen
Treatment Of Trucking Station Wastewater By Two-Phase Anaerobic Digestion System And Rotating Biological Contactor, Tzu-Wen Uen
Theses
The wastewater produced as a result of trucking station activities has some major characteristics such as high COD (26,880 mg/1-42,925 mg/1) and BOD (12,278 mg/1-7,265 mg/1), high COD to BOD ratio (3.49-3.69), high pH range (3.72-11.7), and high grease content (480 mg/1-1,960 mg/1). Therefore, prior to any treatment, it is important to provide some sort of pre-treatment for pH adjustment and grease/oil removal.
The present laboratory investigation has indicated that successful treatment and purification of the subject wastewater is possible using two-phase anaerobic digestion system followed by rotating biological contactor. More than 90% of both COD and BOD was removed …

Benzo(A)Pyrene Ingested From Composite Meals : Analysis And Method Development Related To Total Human Exposure, Che-Han Hsu
Theses
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) have been known for many years to be environmental carcinogen. Moreover, B(a)P has often been used as an indi¬cator for the carcinogenic potency of environmental matter. One of its exposure pathways, ingestion, may possibly be more important than other routes, conventionally studied such as inhalation. The purposes of this thesis are 1) to analyze the B(a)P concentrations in weekly composite and some daily meals obtained in the Total Human Exposure to Environmental Substances (THEES) study, 2) to develop techniques which can measure the levels of B(a)P in foods accurately and effici¬ently, 3) to compare …

Degradation Of Refractory Organic Pollutants In Tar, Water And Soil Matrices By Ozone Or Hydrogen Peroxide With Ultraviolet Light, Liang-Jiun Uang
Theses
The objective of this research is to develop a method to degrade refractory Tar materials, higher molecular weight 3-5 ring Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH's) or degrading these highly refractory PAH structures so that they are amenable to further treatment by biological or chemical methods. The process utilized to achieve this is to treat contaminated soils or tar materials with hydrogen peroxide or ozone plus ultraviolet light. Analysis of 27 specific PAH's was done by gas chromatograph (Flame Ionization Detection) for the reactants and products. The contaminated soil showed significantly lower levels of these PAH's after treatment.
