Analysis Of Nydec Guidelines For Extended Detention Basins: Effectiveness In Water Quality Improvement In Western And Central New York, Karlene Thomas Jan 1994

Analysis Of Nydec Guidelines For Extended Detention Basins: Effectiveness In Water Quality Improvement In Western And Central New York, Karlene Thomas

Theses

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) has recently issued guidelines for stormwater management. One widely utilized management practice is the extended detention basin wherein improved water quality is achieved through sedimentation. NYDEC recommends these be designed so that the volume of storm runoff detained is equivalent to the first flush, defined as the first V of runoff or runoff from a 1-year, 24 hour storm event, whichever is greater, from all land areas for which the perviousness has been changed. It also suggests a minimum detention time of 24 hours. This thesis establishes if these generic criteria, …

Design And Implementation Of An Asynchronous Version Of The Mips R3000 Microprocessor, Kevin Johnson

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to show some of the advantages for the asynchronous implementation of a major synchronous structure. Three people were involved with the design of an asynchronous microprocessor modeled after the MIPS R3000 microprocessor. This microprocessor implemented all of the MIPS reduced instruction set, while eliminating the need for synchronous clocking throughout the chip. Paul Fanelli modeled the asynchronous processor using VHDL (hardware description language). Kevin Johnson created circuit level designs and layouts of the arithmetic logic unit and supporting hardware. Scott Siers created circuit level designs and layouts of the instruction fetch, write back, memory …

Glass Sculpture: Light And Time, Dan Hertzson Jan 1994

Glass Sculpture: Light And Time, Dan Hertzson

Glass vessels are produced in dynamic asymmetrical shapes that are a deliberate study in the contrast between machined and organic forms. The Houda series integrates these elements using evocative or directly narrative surface treatments to color the glass. A sense of monolithic sculptural presence is created by the use of architectural motifs and classic figurative components.

Airgun Pellet Performance Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Kenneth P. Corey Jan 1994

Airgun Pellet Performance Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Kenneth P. Corey

Theses

Very little formal analysis has been done with respect to flow around small scale projectiles. In late 1991, a local manufacturer of airgun pellets and related equipment approached RIT to investigate the flow characteristics of two particular airgun pellet geometries. Initial work was completed with the RIT wind tunnel through the use of scaled up models of the pellets. The conclusions of this work showed many interesting results, even though only the low speed velocity range of the pellets was studied. In order to study the actual operating velocity range of the pellets, the use of a Computational Fluid Dynamics …

Steady State Performance Of Discrete Linear Time-Invarient Systems, Steven W. Haddleton Jan 1994

Steady State Performance Of Discrete Linear Time-Invarient Systems, Steven W. Haddleton

Theses

Transients mask the initial portion of an output signal preventing immediate analysis of the desired operational steady-state response and requiring, at times, lengthy simulation techniques to be employed. This investigation demonstrates a method for readily determining initial conditions that suppress transient solutions to forced discrete-time linear systems, and addresses the necessary theoretical precursors to obtaining the steady-state components of a response. The method is applicable to stable as well as, in principle, unstable systems of any order.

Numerical Analysis Of One-Dimensional Waves In Generalized Thermoelasticity, Mark J. Gorman Dec 1993

Numerical Analysis Of One-Dimensional Waves In Generalized Thermoelasticity, Mark J. Gorman

Theses

Classical thermoelasticity theory is based on Fourier's Law of heat conduction, which, when combined with the other fundamental field equations, leads to coupled hyperbolic-parabolic governing equations. These equations imply that thermal effects are to be felt instantaneously, far away from the external thermomechanieal load. Therefore, this theory admits infinite speeds of propagation of thermoelastic disturbances. This paradox becomes especially evident in problems involving very short time intervals, or high rates. of heat flux. Since infinite wave speeds are physically unrealistic in some situations, and since experiments have shown the existence of wavetype thermoelastic interactions, like in the observation of thermal …

Upgrading Biological Treatment Of Wastewater At Dubai’S Plant By A Fixed-Film System, Rashid Ahmed Bin-Fahad

Theses

The wastewater treatment plant in Dubai, with a design capacity of 130,000 m3/d, receives primarily domestic wastewater and employs primary, secondary and tertiary stages of treatment to produce an effluent suitable for reuse in irrigation. Performance of the plant is influenced to a great extent by the success of the secondary aerobic biological treatment stage. This stage comprises the high-rate activated sludge system for removal of carbonaceous organics followed by the biofilter system for removal of nitrogenous material by nitrification. Operational problems have often been experienced at this plant because of increasing sludge solids production and sludge rising …

Reliability Analysis Of Triple Modular Redundancy System With Spare, Khalid A. Al-Kofahi Dec 1993

Reliability Analysis Of Triple Modular Redundancy System With Spare, Khalid A. Al-Kofahi

Theses

Hardware redundant fault-tolerant systems and the different design approaches are discussed. The reliability analysis of fault-tolerant systems is usually done under permanent fault conditions. With statistical data suggesting that up to 90% of system failures are caused by intermittent faults, the reliability analysis of fault-tolerant systems must concentrate more on this class of faults. In this work, a reconfigurable Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) with spare system that differentiates between permanent and intermittent faults has been built. The reconfiguration process of this system depends on both the current status of its modules and their history. Based on this, a different approach …

Diamonds In The Rough: A Journey Of Human Spirituality, Holly Lynn Hoover Nov 1993

Diamonds In The Rough: A Journey Of Human Spirituality, Holly Lynn Hoover

Theses

The purpose of my thesis was to express various aspects of human spirituality using sculpture as the vehicle for this expression. During the course of my exploration clay and glass each came to take on special metaphorical significance and it became crucial to include both materials within the sculptures. I wanted to create a "marriage of materials" wherein the clay and glass needed each other to make a complete statement. Various clay surfaces and glass processes were explored and will be described later.

Docutech Open Job Submode Simulation, Lisa Bickerstaff Nov 1993

Docutech Open Job Submode Simulation, Lisa Bickerstaff

Theses

What does computer-based training (CBT) have in common with art? Artists have always striven to produce artwork under various constraints and conditions. Trying something new was considered a rebellion and artists were often criticized. Through the ages, artists have had to overcome many obstacles, including exploring the limitations presented by their chosen media. Building a visual interface for a computer in the past was left to the programmer. At the time this was acceptable, because only a programmer would look at it. Today, almost everybody uses a computer and appealing graphics are a must. The programmer from the past cannot …

Using Measured Photography To Obtain Optimal Results From Ccd Color Scanners, David L. Milburn Nov 1993

Using Measured Photography To Obtain Optimal Results From Ccd Color Scanners, David L. Milburn

Theses

With the advent of desktop color scanners in the electronic prepress production environment, quality in color separations from transmissive originals has become erratic. The cause of this fluctuation is, in part, due to the transition from PMT to CCD-based scanning technology. Whereas, PMT scanners tend to have a broad dynamic range, that of CCD scanners is more limited. This characteristic adversely affects the quality of color separations by causing additional tone compression. An original transparency typically has a shadow density of 3.00 and a diffused highlight density of 0.30 for an overall density range of 2.70. On a four-color heatset …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Percentage Area Coverage And Ink Film Trapping, Daniel Garcia Nov 1993

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Percentage Area Coverage And Ink Film Trapping, Daniel Garcia

Theses

An investigation of the relationship between percentage underneath area cover age and ink film trapping is presented. It is common knowledge that an ink generally adheres better to the paper than to a wet ink. This is known as undertrapping. To avoid this problem, printers set a limit for the total area coverage to be printed on the press sheet. The problem is that no formal study has been done to find the optimum point at which the limit should be set. The investigation addresses the issue of total area coverage from a trap ping point of view. This presents …

Uaguzi, Christopher Erin Walsh Nov 1993

Theses

I came to RIT, for a MFA in Computer Animation, with one aim in mind: to learn 3D animation. The most difficult part about my animation theses was finding a project that would challenge all that! had learned up to this point. I didn't want to just fly the camera around objects, as I'd seen in previous theses' and three dimensional animations. That was the easy way out! I set my goals high. I wanted to see if I could bring characters to life in 3D. I wanted to take traditional two dimensional character animation techniques and apply the movement …

A Study Of Techniques To Improve The Effective Resolution Of Thematic Mapper Thermal Infrared Imagery, Ranjit Bhaskar

Theses

This work is a study of existing and proposed approaches to improve the effective resolution of the thermal band of a multispectral image. Frequency domain filtering, magnitude and phase merging, and adaptive least squares approaches were implemented. Those techniques that utilized the inherent correlation between bands appeared to show the most promise. A two step procedure combining the point-by-point merging technique with a regional replacement filter generated the best results.
