A Study Of The Effects Of Child Sexual Abuse, Treatment, And Interventions, Catherine P. Coyle May 1995

A Study Of The Effects Of Child Sexual Abuse, Treatment, And Interventions, Catherine P. Coyle

Theses

The last two decades have seen the topic of child sexual abuse emerge from an issue that was considered rare, or at least uncommon, to one currently viewed as a leading concern of mental health professionals. Public reaction to incest and sexual abuse has changed from one of disbelief to one of active concern. Public awareness and education about the issue of child sexual abuse has developed into a critical area of concern.

Sexual abuse of children is now recognized as a serious mental health problem, both because it is so widespread, and because of increasing evidence of its traumatic …

Asic Design Of An Iir Digital Filter: Using Mentor Graphics Dsp Station Tools, Robert Panek May 1995

Asic Design Of An Iir Digital Filter: Using Mentor Graphics Dsp Station Tools, Robert Panek

Theses

Automation in VLSI design is a powerful way to simplify the VLSI layout process and will allow for faster time to market for integrated circuit designs. One means of automation is VHDL, a hardware description language for integrated circuit designs. A structured VHDL description can be used to describe the hardware design at the logic-gate level, and automated software is available that will use this gate-level design to generate the VLSI layout. A more recent type of automation occurs at a level above this. The Mentor Graphics DSP Station tools use a high-level algorithmic description to generate the gate-level VHDL …

Imaging Modes In Force Regulated Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy: Amplitude, Polarization, And Interference Contrast, Ricardo Toledo-Crow May 1995

Imaging Modes In Force Regulated Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy: Amplitude, Polarization, And Interference Contrast, Ricardo Toledo-Crow

Theses

This dissertation describes the force regulated near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) and two important adaptations: one for imaging polarization contrast with a linear response, and the other for interference imaging. An introduction to near- field optics is first presented, followed by a description of the background to this work that includes the relevant references to the literature and previous results. A simple theoretical description of the NSOM in terms of scalar fields is then presented, followed by an exposition of an early but relevant rigorous vectorial interpretation of the experiment. The basic force regulated NSOM is presented: its parts, operation, …

A Cmos Monolithic Analog Multiplier With Wide Input Dynamic Range, George Anthony Hadgis May 1995

A Cmos Monolithic Analog Multiplier With Wide Input Dynamic Range, George Anthony Hadgis

Theses

A novel CMOS monolithic analog multiplier capable of operating in two quadrants is described in this thesis. The multiplier incorporates a voltage-controlled variable linear resistor comprised of two FET transistors in the feedback network of an operational amplifier. This novel approach to implementing an analog multiplier results in good linearity and wide input dynamic range when compared to other implementations where an FET is incorporated in the feedback network of an operational amplifier. The analog multiplier, comprised of an operational amplifier and a variable linear resistor, has been designed. PSpice simulation results are given in support of the multiplier. Experimental …

The Influence Of Locos-Related Oxide Etch On Thin Oxide Leakage In Memory Devices, Rohan Braithwaite May 1995

The Influence Of Locos-Related Oxide Etch On Thin Oxide Leakage In Memory Devices, Rohan Braithwaite

Theses

The influence of oxide etch backs done in LOCOS based isolation technologies on the low level leakage and reliability of tunnel oxide capacitors has been studied. Tunnel oxide structures are part of nonvolatile memory devices such as Flash EEPROMs and are critical to their overall performance. Locos isolated, area and edge intensive capacitors with 94 A tunnel oxide have been manufactured and tested. Test results indicate that the extent of the etch back and the use of HF instead of buffered HF as chemical etchants do not adversely affect the low level leakge of the tunnel capacitors. However, oxide endurance …

Investigation Of Inertia Controlled Bubble Departure Mechanism In Subcooled Flow Boiling Using High Speed Photography, Viktor R. Mizo May 1995

Investigation Of Inertia Controlled Bubble Departure Mechanism In Subcooled Flow Boiling Using High Speed Photography, Viktor R. Mizo

Theses

A summary of important theoretical models available for bubble growth and departure behavior in flow boiling is presented. Experimental bubble growth rate curves under sub-cooled flow boiling conditions are obtained in the Thermal Analysis Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology utilizing high-speed photography. The effects of flow rate, sub-cooling, heater surface temperature, and cavity size are investigated, and specific trends observed in the bubble growth rate behavior are discussed. The growth rates in flow boiling are compared with the ones for pool boiling, and a need for an improved model for predicting bubble growth …

The Transient Response Of Heat Exchangers, David Bunce May 1995

The Transient Response Of Heat Exchangers, David Bunce

Theses

The transient response of heat exchangers to a change in inlet temperature of one of the fluids is of much interest in industrial practice. Due to the complexity of the problem, no generally accepted solutions exist. This thesis presents an extensive survey of major solutions available in literature and identifies the ranges of parameters for which solutions are not available. A commercially available thermal network solver software package (Thermonet) will be used to model the transient response of heat exchangers. The software package will be verified using five existing solutions found in literature. The software package will be utilized to …

A Vhdl Model Of A Digi-Neocognitron Neural Network For Vlsi, Troy Brewster May 1995

A Vhdl Model Of A Digi-Neocognitron Neural Network For Vlsi, Troy Brewster

Theses

Optical character recognition is useful in many aspects of business. However, the use of conventional computers to provide a solution to this problem has not been very effective. Over the past two decades, researchers have utilized artificial neural networks for optical character recognition with considerable success. One such neural network is the neocognitron, a real-valued, multi-layered hierarchical network that simulates the human visual system. The neocognitron was shown to have the capability for pattern recognition despite variations in size, shape or the presence of deformations from the trained patterns. Unfortunately, the neocognitron is an analog network which prevents it from …

The purpose of my thesis was to have the opportunity to explore the Internet and to attempt to formulate and put into use ideas which would enable the user to sort through the vast amount of information which the Internet has put at our fingertips. I examined the culture of the Internet as well its various uses and difficulties encountered by having so many different types of machines connected to one network. I used the Macintosh computer for research on the Internet as well as a method for presenting and distributing my ideas. I studied the public's perception of the …

The Ritual Of Painting, Allen Vaughan Fowler Apr 1995

The Ritual Of Painting, Allen Vaughan Fowler

Theses

My thesis began to coalesce in the Spring of 1994 when I stretched my first triptych based on the golden mean and produced my first large landscape (Figure 1). I decided upon a title for the series, Dusk Informs Our Designs (D.I.O.D.), that functioned on several levels: as dusk is a period of shifting light, it is a time which informs through shadows and filtered light our manifest designs (patterns or motifs); simultaneously, it is a time which can obscure the clarity of imposed structures and divisions, thus informing the often less obvious nature of our designs (intentions or schemes); …

The Effect Of Environment On Latent Image Formation And Stability, Sean O'Toole Apr 1995

The Effect Of Environment On Latent Image Formation And Stability, Sean O'Toole

Theses

This thesis uses an unsensitized emulsion and two chemically sensitized emulsions to investigate the effect of oxygen and water vapor on latent-image formation and stability. At exposure times that cause little or no low-intensity reciprocity failure, vacuum treatment of an emulsion can result in photographic speeds significantly lower than those found in a humidified environment. This is presumably due to competition between internal desensitization sites and surface electron traps for conduction-band electrons. Storage of a latent image in a humidified air environment will induce a speed loss in some emulsions. The unsensitized emulsion was most sensitive to environmental factors while …

Time, So Pak

Theses

"There is nothing more entertaining than to have a frank talk with yourself. Few do it - frankly. Educating yourself is getting acquainted with yourself." " - Robert Henri In structuring my thesis, I have decided that the best format to follow would be one of a free-flowing dialogue with myself. This is the approach I take to making my paintings, and I feel that only through such an open-ended inquiry, will I be able to solidify and transcribe some of my inner thoughts onto paper.

Mechanism Of Inhibitation Of Human Leukocyte Elastase By Benzisothiazolinone-1,1-Dioxides, Catherine Franke Mar 1995

Mechanism Of Inhibitation Of Human Leukocyte Elastase By Benzisothiazolinone-1,1-Dioxides, Catherine Franke

Theses

Benzisothiazolinone- 1,1 -dioxides are potent, time-dependent, reversible inhibitors of human leukocyte elastase (HLE) that demonstrate the ability to inhibit HLE catalyzed degradation of insoluble elastin. A stoichiometry of 1.4 to 1.47 equivalents per mole of enzyme indicates that these compounds are efficient inhibitors of HLE. The proposed mechanism of HLE inhibition has been investigated and the data are consistent with acylation of the active site serine followed by elimination of the leaving group to form a reactive sulfonyl imine intermediate. The reactive intermediate can undergo hydration followed by deacylation or it can react with an enzyme nucleophile to form a …

Application Of Imaging System Geometric Models To A Synthetic Image Generation System, James M. Salacain Mar 1995

Application Of Imaging System Geometric Models To A Synthetic Image Generation System, James M. Salacain

Theses

A generalized imaging system geometric model has been incorporated into the Center for Imaging Science Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) software system. The camera model is capable of simulating the geometric characteristics of frame cameras, line scanners and pushbroom scanners. The user of the model has the ability to define both the sensor internal orientation as well as provide time varying external orientation parameters. The model has been successfully validated through the use of both diagnostic simulated scenes as well as quantitative comparisons between actual imagery and simulated imagery.
