Measurement Of Volume Scattering Functions In Turbid Water And Its Correlation With Mtf Degradation, Richard Hart, Michael Mcdonald
Measurement Of Volume Scattering Functions In Turbid Water And Its Correlation With Mtf Degradation, Richard Hart, Michael Mcdonald
Theses
Scattering of light in turbid water is a major source of image degradation. The intention of this experiment was to construct a small angle scattering meter and measure the volume scattering functions for specific turbid conditions. These experimentally derived volume scattering functions were used to correlate a mathematical modulation transfer function derivation with previously measured modulation transfer functions for a specific turbid medium. Due to design shortcomings, errors were produced in the production of the volume scattering functions. This produced a lack of correlation between our mathematically derived MTF's and those measured in the past. The validity of the mathematical …
A Unified Matrix Formulation For The Unbalance Response Of A Flexible Rotor In Fluid-Film Bearings, Charles Thomas Jr
A Unified Matrix Formulation For The Unbalance Response Of A Flexible Rotor In Fluid-Film Bearings, Charles Thomas Jr
Theses
An analysis and a computer program for determining the steady-state response of a general rotor-bearing system, based on the concept of a dynamic stiffness matrix, are presented in this thesis. The rotor is idealized as an axial assemblage of beam elements that have continuous mass and isotropic, elastic properties. These properties are developed by using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory equations to form the dynamic stiffness matrix. Transverse shear effects are neglected. Gyroscopic coupling effects, asymmetric linearized bearing properties, and unbalanced loading are represented as optional end effects on the beam elements. The development necessitated the use of complex variables to …
Relationship Between Image Size And Tone Reproduction Curve, Kenneth Hansen, Robert Pisa
Relationship Between Image Size And Tone Reproduction Curve, Kenneth Hansen, Robert Pisa
Theses
This project attempts to find a relationship between preferred tone reproduction and image size. Photographic prints with different tone reproduction characteristics were made. The differences were very small but just noticeable. Prints were made in three different sizes and compared to a standard size print by a paired comparison method. Analysis showed that there was no tone reproduction difference in the preferred prints of both smaller and larger sizes.
Separation Of Gas Mixtures Via Batch Parametric Pumping : A Theoretical Study, Jose G. Lopez
Separation Of Gas Mixtures Via Batch Parametric Pumping : A Theoretical Study, Jose G. Lopez
Theses
An equilibrium plug?flow model, for the batch isothermal separation of a binary gas mixture in a pressure changing parametric pump, was investigated for the system propane?argon on carbon, with the aid of a G. E. Pack 4020 computer. Separation factors comparable to a temperature changing parametric pump are predicted by the model. A change in pressure of the gas mixture may be carried out very rapidly, compared with a temperature change of similar magnitude. The effects of temperature, pressure, concentration, and penetration are discussed.

Distillation Design Techniques, Ronald Michael Carlucci
Theses
A design method for binary distillation systems is presented that minimizes the required rigorous calculations. A computer program is developed that finds the number of theoretical stages, and feed stage for a specified separation and reboiler vapor rate. Results for three binary systems are presented.
The design method and computer program are extended to the multicomponent case at the condition of total reflux. Results for one ternary system are presented. The possibility of using the method at other than total reflux is discussed. Usage of the method to search for multicomponent azeotropes and results are also presented.
Analytic equations are …
Antoine Type Equation For Liquid Viscosity Correlations, Edward Goletz Jr.
Antoine Type Equation For Liquid Viscosity Correlations, Edward Goletz Jr.
Theses
A modified Andrade4 equation, similar to the Antoine equation for vapor pressure-temperature correlations, was developed for liquid viscosity-temperature correlations. Included in the investigation were the following compounds: n-alkanes (C2-C20), n-alkenes (C2-C20), n-alkyl benzenes (C6-C10), n-alkyl cyclohexanes (C6-C22), and fifteen polar compounds. Except for propene, errors of less than 5% were obtained. Normal heptadecane was used to compare correlations developed by Andrade4, Walther20, and Doolittle9, with the modified Andrade equation. The latter was found to give the best …
Stress-Relaxation Of Cross-Linked Polyethylene At Elevated Temperature, Ravio Luik
Stress-Relaxation Of Cross-Linked Polyethylene At Elevated Temperature, Ravio Luik
Theses
Polyethylene because of its excellent chemical, physical, mechanical and electrical properties, as well as its easy adaptability to extrusion, molding and other processes and its low cost has become a very widely used material for hundreds of applications. But, because it is a thermoplastic, it also deforms and flows when temperatures approach or exceed the crystalline melting point. This handicap, however, can be reduced by crosslinking the polymer chains and thereby converting the thermoplastic to a thermoset material. To further expand the possible uses of this popular material and to further improve the properties, fillers and antioxidants may be compounded …
Computer Simulation Of A Split Feed Claus Sulfur Recovery Plant, Thomas R. Woolley
Computer Simulation Of A Split Feed Claus Sulfur Recovery Plant, Thomas R. Woolley
Theses
A computer program which calculates a complete heat and material balance around a "split feed" Claus sulfur recovery plant was written in Fortran IV for the RCA Spectra 70 computer. The program provides for up to three catalytic reactors, the hot gas bypass method of reheating, and a feed gas containing hydrogen sulfide, water vapor, hydrogen, and nitrogen. The program user specifies as input data the feed stream composition and temperature, the number of reactors, the combustion air temperature, the conversion in each reactor, the outlet temperature in each condenser, and the fraction of burner exit gas used for reheating …
A Theoretical Study Of Continuous Parametric Pumping At Constant Temperature, Philip Weingartner
A Theoretical Study Of Continuous Parametric Pumping At Constant Temperature, Philip Weingartner
Theses
A continuous parametric pump, operating at constant temperature with pressure as the driving force, is analyized by means of an equilibrium theory. A thorough explanation of the process and the resulting mathematical model reveal how the parameters effect pump performance. The experimental data cited agree well with the analytical results in the CO2-He on silica gel system. Complete removal of the solute from one of the product streams can be achieved through the proper selection of penetration distances and pressure levels.
A Photographic Study Of Movement Of Material On A Web Offset Press Blanket, Leigh Stewart
A Photographic Study Of Movement Of Material On A Web Offset Press Blanket, Leigh Stewart
Theses
This paper studies the movement of material which accumulates on the image printing blanket of a web offset press printing newsprint. A theory is advanced to explain this movement. It is based on the differences in velocities of the paper and blanket surfaces entering and exiting the printing nip. The designed experiment run uses three factors to test the changes in direction and rate of movement. These are: (1) the compressibility of blanket sets, (2) the relative image printing and impression blanket diameters, and (3) the printing squeeze. No other factors involved in the nip area are tested. The movement …

The Objective Evaluation Of Image Quality Produced With Physical Development, Bruce C. Smith, Keith M. Snyder
The Objective Evaluation Of Image Quality Produced With Physical Development, Bruce C. Smith, Keith M. Snyder
Theses
This experiment was an analysis of the difference in objective measures of image quality between chemical and physical development methods, including prefixation and postfixation processes. Of particular interest was the process outlined by Matejec1 for postfixation physical development. An investigation of resolving power and MTF for two fine grain films was carried out for four different development processes all possessing approximately the same speed capability. Both the effect of combined chemical and optical spread functions and the chemical spread alone were investigated through edge analysis using Fourier methods. A significant increase in image quality was found with the finest grain …
Diffusion Studies With Novel Plastics, Marion Toohey Conway
Diffusion Studies With Novel Plastics, Marion Toohey Conway
Theses
The rates of diffusion through two fluorinated groups and two non-fluorinated groups of laboratory prepared membranes were compared with each other and with commercially available cellulose membranes. The membranes.were evaluated, in particular, for possible use with the artificial kidney. Diffusion experiments were conducted with sodium chloride, urea and uric acid. Experimental results were compared to diffusion coefficients calculated in the literature for cellulose membranes. The results show that the rates of diffusion of all of the solutes tested for the laboratory prepared membranes are comparable to that of the cellulose membranes. The fluorinated group had a slightly higher diffusion coefficient …
An Analysis Of The Geneva Mechanism As A Timing Device, Hubert W. Meyer
An Analysis Of The Geneva Mechanism As A Timing Device, Hubert W. Meyer
Theses
A mathematical analysis of the Geneva mechanism was conducted to determine the potential of this device as a tinting mechanism, and the feasibility of replacing the widely used pallet and starwheel escapement with a Geneva mechanism.
The primary objective of the study was to determine if the Geneva mechanism will attain a terminal velocity, and if so, how much time is required to reach this velocity.
To accomplish this objective, the differential equation of motion for the system was derived using Lagrangian dynatos. The equation was programmed and solved on a digital computer.
The study indicated that the Geneva mechanism …

Preparation Of Malachite Green Leucocyanide And A Study Of The Effects Of Dye Impurities, Paul Dennis Berg
Preparation Of Malachite Green Leucocyanide And A Study Of The Effects Of Dye Impurities, Paul Dennis Berg
Theses
Using a modification of a preparation method published by Tobin, Katzakian, and Chisholm, the photochromic leucocyanide of malachite green dye was prepared in a pure form. This leucocyanide was doped with various amounts of the dye as an impurity and the effect of the dye on the photolysis and fade reactions tested.
It was determined that the dye has the effect of merely masking the leucocyanide during photolysis exposure but does chemically increase the completeness of the fade reaction.

Fast Fourier Transform With Computer Program, James Chapin
Fast Fourier Transform With Computer Program, James Chapin
Theses
Many computer programs have been developed to calculate the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). It is the intention of this thesis to develop the tree graph idea, presented by E. 0. Brigham and R. E. Morrow in the article "The fast Fourier transform," into another computer program that will calculate both the forward and inverse Fourier transforms using nonsymmetrical periodic functions. Most of the information obtained was from periodicals with relatively little available in text books. General matrix equations and calculations presented in proofs were developed by this thesis. The tree graph idea was also expanded to a general form. First …

Relationship Of Preferred Tone Reproduction To Picture Size, David Miller
Relationship Of Preferred Tone Reproduction To Picture Size, David Miller
Theses
A relationship between preferred tone reproduction and final picture size is suggested in many forms in the literature and in practical experience. This project uses photographic halftone prints varying in tone reproduction and produced at different sizes to investigate this relationship. The tone reproduction variations are introduced electronically using an RCA color scanner and a method of eigenvector analysis is used to reduce these tone reproductions down to their important components. The final set of prints consisting of ten tone reproductions, three reproduced sizes, and two sharpnesses are evaluated to determine their subjective quality in the judgement of a group …
The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani
The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani
Theses
The fate of Hazardous Polluting. Substances (HPS) in an aqueous environment has been investigated using ultraviolet light. Chlorobenzene, o-cresol and nitrobenzene were used as model HPS for this study. The kinetics were followed and good first order plots were obtained for all compounds. The temperature of the reaction was shown to effect the rate. Solid insoluble and soluble non-volatile products were formed in the photolytic reaction of the three model systems.

Predictions Of Catalyst Utilization With Continuous Replacement In Multistage Continuous Reactors From Batch Reactor Data, Norman M. Feinberg
Predictions Of Catalyst Utilization With Continuous Replacement In Multistage Continuous Reactors From Batch Reactor Data, Norman M. Feinberg
Theses
This thesis presents a new equation for predicting catalyst utilization with continuous replacement in multistage continuous reactors from batch reactor data.
An equation is derived from experimental data for a. no-replacement system which predicts catalyst activity as a function of time. The assumption of constant inventory, constant replacement rate and perfect mixing permit the calculation of catalyst age distribution. By combining age distribution with a measure of catalyst productivity, as determined from activity as a function of time, an equation for catalyst utilization was derived. The case used to prepare this equation was where the activity decline curve appears as …
Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano
Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano
Theses
A sanitary landfill was simulated by placing "refuse" between two layers of soil in 6" by 24" cylinders. Canine nutriment was used to simulate the refuse. Once the refuse began to decompose, the decomposition gases were collected in a gas cell and analyzed in an Infrared Spectrophotometer. When gas samples were not taken, the decomposition gases were vented through a water trap (to prevent air from backing up into the system) into the atmosphere. Distilled water was added and withdrawn at two week intervals to leach out the pollutants.
From the Infrared analysis, the decomposition gases were determined to be …
Computerized Computation Of Counter-Current Extraction Problems For Ternary Liquid Systems, Albert Warren Patterson
Computerized Computation Of Counter-Current Extraction Problems For Ternary Liquid Systems, Albert Warren Patterson
Theses
A Fortran computer program has been developed that will calculate the number of theoretical equilibrium stages required for a countercurrent liquid-liquid extraction design problem. It also furnishes a complete stagewise material balance. Further utility can be found by using it for optimization studies. The program can be utilized for three-component systems that form one pair of partially miscible liquids, the most frequently occuring situation. The program was written for the General Electric Mark I Time-Sharing System.
The program has a practical advantage in that isothermal liquid equilibria data are used directly for calculation purposes. No use is made of theoretically …
