A Comparison Of Sulfur Sensitization On Silver Bromide And Silver Iodobromide Emulsions, Frederick Marland Jr
A Comparison Of Sulfur Sensitization On Silver Bromide And Silver Iodobromide Emulsions, Frederick Marland Jr
Theses
In emulsion literature, it has been stated that silver iodobromide emulsions can be sensitized more efficiently than pure silver bromide. 20 Recently, work has been published comparing the two emulsion types, using single jet emulsions with high internal versus surface sensitivity. Tani found that when the internal / surface sensitivity ratio increased because of the addition of iodide, the ratio of sulfur sensitization also increased. 5 This showed that the increase in sensitivity upon chemical sensitization was greater for the iodobromide emulsion, and can be explained by the lower sensitivity of the unsensitized silver iodobromide. In this experiment, internal sensitivity …

The Investigation Of Metameric Grays For The Testing Of Spectral Changes In The D5000 Standard Illuminant, Chun-Fai Alexander Wat
The Investigation Of Metameric Grays For The Testing Of Spectral Changes In The D5000 Standard Illuminant, Chun-Fai Alexander Wat
Theses
Very often, different results are obtained when colored originals and/or reproductions under different so-called standard light sources are evaluated. A possible explanation for the different results is that not all admissible standard sources have the same spectral power distribution, either due to differences in manufacturing or due to aging. A possible solution to the problem would be to determine how the spectral power distribution of a given illuminant differs from the standard (D5000) distribution by visually comparing suitable metameric grays with a stable non-selective gray under the illuminant in question. This comparison would serve as a quick and inexpensive way …
An Investigation Into The Interactions Of Certain Visual Attributes Of A Four-Color Reproduction Produced On A Sheet-Fed Offset Lithographic Printing Press, Daniel Lake
Theses
The development of a closed loop press control system has been the goal of many press manufacturers in recent years. These closed loop systems are designed to collect data from sample press sheets by measuring certain process variables which are considered to be indicators of press control. The theory is that by controlling the variation of these indicator variables, it is possible to control the color variation of the halftone overprints of the reproduction. The problem in the design of these automatic control systems, however, concerns which process variables should be considered indicators of press control. This study was undertaken …

Diagnostic Strategies: Suggested Procedures To Identify And Evaluate Reading Problems Of The Middle Grade Student, Mary T. Powell
Theses
Mary T. Powell’s 1978 thesis, Diagnostic Strategies: Suggested Procedures to Identify and Evaluate Reading Problems of the Middle Grade Student, explores methods for diagnosing and addressing reading difficulties among fourth to sixth grade students. Drawing on her experience teaching in a low socioeconomic urban school, Powell outlines a range of factors contributing to reading disabilities, including physical, psychological, intellectual, and environmental causes. She emphasizes the importance of early identification and individualized diagnosis, highlighting tools such as intelligence tests, oral reading inventories, and teacher observation checklists.
A central focus of the study is the development of decoding skills—often referred to …
The Use Of Fourier Analyzed Square Waves In The Determination Of The Modulation Transfer Function Of Photographic Materials, David Moffett, John Stanton
The Use Of Fourier Analyzed Square Waves In The Determination Of The Modulation Transfer Function Of Photographic Materials, David Moffett, John Stanton
Theses
Fourier analysis and a computer were used to generate the Fourier series and coefficients for the transmission distribution of a square wave target and the effective exposure produced on Kodak Plus-X film. This was performed in an effort to find a workable alternative to the proposed American National Standards Institute (ANSI) method for the determination of the photographic modulation transfer function. The results showed that the square wave method generated a curve with the same general trend as the conventional ANSI method. The Fourier analyzed square wave method had a greater degree of variability than did the standard method. The …
The Determination Of Line Spread Functions For Unconventional Photographic Emulsions, Peter Jann
The Determination Of Line Spread Functions For Unconventional Photographic Emulsions, Peter Jann
Theses
System mean normalized line spread functions with 90% confidence limits were determined for four emulsions. These emulsions or film materials were Kodak Panatomic-X, H & W Control type #77 , 3M #7842 dry silver , and Xidex DMCF diazo. The method of edge gradient analysis was employed with replication of n = 3. Microdensitometer degradation was not eliminated from these system mean normalized line spread functions. Microdensitometer mean MTFs with 90% confidence limits were determined for different types and/or modes of instrument operation with replication of n = 2. Due to a lack of precision in the determination of the …

Characterization Of A Contact Screen System As Used In The Graphic Arts, Arthur Kliman
Characterization Of A Contact Screen System As Used In The Graphic Arts, Arthur Kliman
Theses
Fractional image areas based on measured transmittance distributions of contact screens having screen frequencies of 50 - 150 lines/inch* (1.95 - 4.66 cycles/mm) are compared to measured fractional image areas produced on lithographic film using the same contact screens. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the lithographic film is calculated for spatial frequency inputs of 1.95 - 12.00 cycles/mm. Based on these experiments, a mathematical model was developed to describe how the fractional image area of a halftone is dependent on spatial frequency of the contact screen, predicted fractional image area based on the screen ' s transmittance distribution, and …

The Settling Of Particles In A Square Contained Medium, Richard S. Matyas
The Settling Of Particles In A Square Contained Medium, Richard S. Matyas
Theses
Stokes' Law, has been standardly utilized to calculate the terminal velocity of falling particles. However, the limitation of Stokes' Law is that it does not take into account the container walls and their resulting drag forces. Extensive work with additional drag due to cylindrical container walls has been examined by many investigators. The classical and earliest is the well know Ladenburg Correction which cannot be utilized with non-cylindrical containers. This experimental thesis examines the analog of the Ladenburg relationship for a square container. This experimental thesis was undertaken to experimentally determine the value of the constant K1 for a …
A Consciousness Simulation Model, R. Edward Mitchell Jr.
A Consciousness Simulation Model, R. Edward Mitchell Jr.
Theses
The thesis titled "A Consciousness Simulation Model" by R. Edward Mitchell (1977) explores the theoretical design of a digital model aimed at simulating human consciousness. The model is structured around a collection of independent processing modules that mimic various human cognitive and emotional processes. These modules include components for thought selection, ego/achievement, memory, and emotion processing, which interact with one another in a fashion that simulates aspects of human thought and behavior.
Mitchell's primary goal is to develop a system that could behave more like a human, particularly in communication and decision-making processes, to improve human-machine interaction. The thesis highlights …
Direct Measurement Of The Optical Modulation Transfer Function Of Non-Developed Emulsions, Glen Elie
Direct Measurement Of The Optical Modulation Transfer Function Of Non-Developed Emulsions, Glen Elie
Theses
A new procedure for measuring the MTF of non-developed emulsions is discussed, which uses a coherent energy source and interference system to produce sinusoidal fringes on a film sample. The transmitted light is projected onto the scanning slit of a photomultiplier, and its variations registered on a chart recorder. Measurements are taken directly from the traces of the irradiance distribution to calculate the optical part of the MTF of the sample. This system does not require development of the film, and is therefore free of the non-linearities inherent in traditional test methods. Results are obtained for Kodak Panatomic-X, Kodak High …

Dynamics Of The Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System, Joseph P. Hartmann
Theses
A computer model for the Dynamics of the Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System has been developed for a 17.5 kg canine using the Continuous Systems Modeling Program (CSMP) for the 360 Computer System. The major body components controlling the glucose dynamics (liver, pancreas, body muscle, blood flow, and body fluid compartments) have been modeled in terms of either their production, absorption, or transport of glucose, and the concentration levels of both the hormones and substrates perfusing the body component. A set of mneumonics has also been developed to label the hundreds of constant and variable terms required to describe a complex system of …
An Experimental Study Of Separation Of Binary And Ternary Gas Mixtures By Parametric Pumping, Stephen E. Belsky
An Experimental Study Of Separation Of Binary And Ternary Gas Mixtures By Parametric Pumping, Stephen E. Belsky
Theses
An experimental study of gas parametric pumping is presented which examines the purification of helium using silica gel to remove the impurity carbon dioxide. Low gas flow rates are used to allow adequate time for equilibrium to be approached, assuming intraparticle diffusion is the controlling mass transfer step. By varying the cycle time, at long cycle times, the effect of penetration length (a function of dynamic capacity) is indicated. Also, at low cycle time, the effects during pressure changes become more significant.
Using low flow rate improves separation effectiveness if evaluated at equal dynamic capacity. When using low flow rate …

Non-Equilibrium Parametric Pumps For Separating Liquids Or Gases, Anil Krishna Rastogi
Non-Equilibrium Parametric Pumps For Separating Liquids Or Gases, Anil Krishna Rastogi
Theses
An experimental and theoretical study has been done of Non-Equilibrium parametric pumps. Mathematical models and computer programmes are developed for both thermal and heatless parametric pumps based on non-equilibrium conditions and linear isotherms. A mathematical study was done for thermal parametric pumps whereas both experimental and theoretical studies were made for a heatless parametric pump. The effect of different operating conditions has been investigated on the separation of NaCl-H2O via a thermal parametric pump and He-CO2 and He-C3H6 gas mixtures via a heatless parametric pump.
The experimental study of heatless parametric pumps was extended …
Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium At Low Pressures : Correlation Of Binary And Prediction Of Multicomponent Data, Norman I. Silverman
Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium At Low Pressures : Correlation Of Binary And Prediction Of Multicomponent Data, Norman I. Silverman
Theses
The Wilson equation is chosen as typical of the new correlations for activity coefficients gaining wide distribution for use in the correlation and prediction of vapor-liquid equilibria today. Vapor liquid equilibrium data for 247 binary systems have been regressed against each of ten (10) objective functions and values of the Wilson energy parameters obtained. For the typical binary system, a wide variation of the Wilson energy parameters are observed when different objective functions are used with the given set of binary data. These are each examined with respect to their capability to correlate multicomponent vapor-liquid equilibrium data for seventy-three (73) …
Quality Aspects Of Holographic Image Deblurring, Robert Kalita, Lawrence White
Quality Aspects Of Holographic Image Deblurring, Robert Kalita, Lawrence White
Theses
The process of holographic image enhancement was investigated with respect to image quality. A maximum improvement in MTF of 60% was achieved. The process itself was found difficult due to the critical natures of many of its steps. The theory of image enhancement by optical processing is explained in detail and the reasons for using a holographic filter are discussed.
Punctuation Frequency In Selected American Daily Newspapers, Andrew Malcolm
Punctuation Frequency In Selected American Daily Newspapers, Andrew Malcolm
Theses
American daily newspapers present millions of punctuated sentences to the public, yet--after an extensive search of literature for similar studies--no comprehensive study of punctuation frequency seems to have been made before this study. It is hypothesized (1) that punctuation appears at predictable rates in the main news section of American daily newspapers, (2) that statistically significant differences exist in punctuation frequency between each of five selected newspapers and--by group--between those of large and small cities, and (3) that statistically significant differences exist in punctuation frequency between 1976, 1966, 1956 and 1946. Five newspapers were selected for the study: The New …
Correlation Study Between Subjective And Objective Scene Classifications, Craig Campbell
Correlation Study Between Subjective And Objective Scene Classifications, Craig Campbell
Theses
In addition to the quality of an original (transparency or reflection) preferred halftone reproduction is also dependent on scene classification. That is, how the tones of the original are rendered. If the majority of the picture area contains light tones, it is referred to as a high key image. Should the majority of picture area be confined to dark tones, it is referred to as a low key image. When the picture area is composed of the entire tone scale (white, grays, and black), it is referred to as a normal key image. The problem of how to objectively classify …

Individualization Through Remedial Teaching Techniques, Marilyn Sue Hensley
Theses
Using the information acquired during my study in the Lindenwood 4 program , my practicum , and classroom teaching experience , this paper should have a very significant and practical impact in the future for myself and other teachers.
This paper is unique because other research has been compiled into one paper that can help classroom teachers learn to pinpoint problems and select or develop appropriate instructional methods for its remediation. Most good teachers have not been able to individualize for all children but they have the desire.
The problem of solving individual needs while teaching in the classroom has …

Having been a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for over 10 years, functioning both as a practitioner and as an educator, I have become very aware of many problems facing my profession. These problems are frequently discussed by physicians and nurses in the work situation as well as in the political arena. Until this time there has been no formal study of these problems.
In my study of interpersonal conflict related to the field of health care administration, I became aware that one method of solving conflict entailed utilization of opinions of the conflicting groups in order to reach a mutual …
Increasing Visual Detectability In Reduced Exposure Mammography By Contrast Adjustment, Stuart Richer
Increasing Visual Detectability In Reduced Exposure Mammography By Contrast Adjustment, Stuart Richer
Theses
The radiobiologic level from an average direct-exposure, fine-grain mammograph approaches 4000 millirads. Copying reduced-exposure mammographs onto high gradient films yields a method of reducing radiation to the patient by a factor of 2. A mathematically based tone-reproduction system was developed in an attempt to produce acceptable facsimile images from a series of reduced-exposure mammographs. Acceptability was tested by radiologists using a sensitometric phantum. The radiologists were asked to quality rank a full exposure mammograph, facsimile mammographs, and a film-screen mammograph in terms of detectability of size and number of calcifications. Based on evidence, there is reason to believe that a …
