Assessment Of Accuracy And Repeatability Of Verbal Exertion Estimation In The Presence Of Fatigue, Matthew Klosner Nov 2007

Assessment Of Accuracy And Repeatability Of Verbal Exertion Estimation In The Presence Of Fatigue, Matthew Klosner

Theses

Occupational ergonomics has long focused on physical exertion as a key to the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries. Traditionally, objective measurements of forceful exertion such as electromyography (EMG) and direct force measurement have been used to assess exposure to forceful exertion. However, these measurements are often not practical for occupational settings due to their cumbersome and costly nature. As a result, psychophysical magnitude estimation may be used, in which human subjects verbally estimate the magnitude of an exertion. Despite an abundance of research on verbal estimation, its repeatability and the effects of fatigue on estimation accuracy have not been sufficiently assessed. …

Rfid-Assisted Wireless Sensor Networks For Cardiac Tele-Healthcare, Laura J. Celentano Nov 2007

Rfid-Assisted Wireless Sensor Networks For Cardiac Tele-Healthcare, Laura J. Celentano

Theses

As the baby boomers head into old age, America will see a dramatic increase in the number of elderly patients admitted to healthcare facilities, such as nursing homes. Due to this rising elderly population, it will be difficult for nursing home personnel to monitor all patients at once. One way to cut down on the amount of supervision by the staff is for patients to administer their own medication. This leads to new problems though, as a patient incorrectly administering one of their many medications could lead to a disastrous end. Technology to wirelessly transmit a patient’s electrocardiogram (ECG) has …

A New Adaptive Edge Enhancement Algorithm For Color Laser Printers, Manoj Kumar Reddy Nov 2007

A New Adaptive Edge Enhancement Algorithm For Color Laser Printers, Manoj Kumar Reddy

Theses

This thesis presents a novel algorithm for improving quality of edges in printed text. The algorithm is designed to add pixels at selected edge locations after halftoning. The extent of the correction is proportional to the “strength” of the edge, as determined by comparing the local differences in a four-pixel neighborhood to a dynamically generated threshold. The process is computationally efficient and requires minimal memory resources. The performance of our proposed algorithm is clearly demonstrated on several characters and lines. While the algorithm aims to improve the quality of printed text (edges), it is possible to extend its application to …

Dynamic Inversion Of Underactuated Systems Via Squaring Transformation Matrix, Ryan Schkoda Nov 2007

Dynamic Inversion Of Underactuated Systems Via Squaring Transformation Matrix, Ryan Schkoda

Theses

In this thesis, a novel method for control of non-square dynamical systems using a model following approach is developed. Control methodologies such as dynamic inversion and sliding mode control require an inversion of the input influence matrix. However, if the system input influence matrix is non-square direct inversion is not possible. Pseudo inversion of the input influence matrix may be performed for control allocation. However, pseudo inversion limits the control to states where the controller is directly applied. The pseudoinverse method does not permit the engineer to designate a particular state to control or track. When accurate tracking of states …

Theses

With the increasing threat of biological warfare and the fear of an epidemic outbreak of influenza, smallpox, and other deadly diseases, the field of epidemic modeling is becoming increasingly important in the scientific fields. The focus of this thesis will be to create a model to study the effects of the rates of reaction and the rates of diffusion within a network based on the different parameters used in the modeling of any disease. For this model, the exact parameters of a specific disease are not as crucial as the qualitative behaviors that occur from the changing parameters. The model …

A Link-Quality-Aware Graph Model For Cognitive Radio Network Routing Topology Management, Andrew Michael James Oct 2007

A Link-Quality-Aware Graph Model For Cognitive Radio Network Routing Topology Management, Andrew Michael James

Theses

Wireless communications is one of the fastest growing fields in the world; however this creates a problem since all wireless signals are fighting for the same limited amount spectrum in any given space. The underutilization of licensed spectrum has created a need for a new way to use it. Cognitive Radio Networks and Dynamic Spectrum Access are a solution to this problem. By opportunistically using spectrum, devices can gain access to more wireless bandwidth while not violating FCC regulations. The concepts of Cognitive Radio Networks and Dynamic Spectrum Access are very new topics and have yet to be fully explored. …

Land Surface Temperature And Emissivity Retrieval From Thermal Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, Marvin Boonmee Oct 2007

Land Surface Temperature And Emissivity Retrieval From Thermal Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, Marvin Boonmee

Theses

A new algorithm, optimized land surface temperature and emissivity retrieval (OLSTER), is presented to compensate for atmospheric effects and retrieve land surface temperature (LST) and emissivity from airborne thermal infrared hyperspectral data. The OLSTER algorithm is designed to retrieve properties of both natural and man-made materials. Multi-directional or multi-temporal observations are not required, and the scenes do not have to be dominated by blackbody features. The OLSTER algorithm consists of a preprocessing step, an iterative search for nearblackbody pixels, and an iterative constrained optimization loop. The preprocessing step provides initial estimates of LST per pixel and the atmospheric parameters of …

Theoretical Framework For Predicting Joint Reaction And Ground Reaction Forces In A Dynamic Pendulum Tree Model Of Human Motion, Peyman Rajai

Theses

Lagrangian dynamics and the method of superfluous coordinates are applied to find ground and joint reaction forces on the human body modeled as a general branched 2-D pendulum tree system with arbitrary segments and arbitrarily distributed point masses. A theoretical framework is established for predicting these constraint forces during human motion and consequently their effects on dynamics, dynamic stability, energy efficiency and the potential of these forces to produce joint injury and/or pain. Applications to human walking are initiated. During idealized phases where there is only single point contact of the stance leg with the ground such as just after …

Improvement Of Retrieved Reflectance In The Presence Of Clouds, Brent Bartlett Aug 2007

Improvement Of Retrieved Reflectance In The Presence Of Clouds, Brent Bartlett

Theses

Many algorithms exist to invert airborne imagery from units of either radiance or sensor specific digital counts to units of reflectance. These compensation algorithms remove unwanted atmospheric variability allowing objects on the ground to be analyzed. Low error levels in homogenous atmospheric conditions have been demonstrated. In many cases however, clouds are present in the atmosphere which introduce error into the inversion at unacceptable levels. For example, the relationship that is defined between sensor reaching radiance and ground reflectance in direct sunlight will not be the same as in a cloud shadow. A novel method has been developed which utilizes …

Modeling Wildland Fire Radiance In Synthetic Remote Sensing Scenes, Zhen Wang Aug 2007

Modeling Wildland Fire Radiance In Synthetic Remote Sensing Scenes, Zhen Wang

Theses

This thesis develops a framework for implementing radiometric modeling and visualization of wildland fire. The ability to accurately model physical and op- tical properties of wildfire and burn area in an infrared remote sensing system will assist efforts in phenomenology studies, algorithm development, and sensor evaluation. Synthetic scenes are also needed for a Wildland Fire Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems (DDDAS) for model feedback and update. A fast approach is presented to predict 3D flame geometry based on real time measured heat flux, fuel loading, and wind speed. 3D flame geometry could realize more realistic radiometry simulation. A Coupled Atmosphere-Fire …

An Evolutionary Algorithm Approach To Simultaneous Multi-Mission Radar Waveform Design, Jason Enslin Aug 2007

An Evolutionary Algorithm Approach To Simultaneous Multi-Mission Radar Waveform Design, Jason Enslin

Theses

It would be beneficial with today’s cluttered electromagnetic spectrum to be able to perform multiple radar missions simultaneously from a single platform. The design of a waveform for this application would greatly benefit the radar community. Radar systems are used to perform many missions, some of which include the detection and tracking of airborne and ground moving targets as well as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging. There are many systems that can operate in multiple modes to perform these missions, although there is no one radar that can simultaneously perform multiple missions using the same waveform [1]. Each mission can …

Applicability Of Clustering To Cyber Intrusion Detection, Gilbert Hendry Aug 2007

Applicability Of Clustering To Cyber Intrusion Detection, Gilbert Hendry

Theses

Maintaining cyber security is a complex task, utilizing many levels of network information along with an array of technology. Current practices for combating cyber attacks typically use Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) to passively detect and block multi-stage attacks. Because of the speed and force at which a new type of cyber attack can occur, automated detection and response is becoming an apparent necessity. Anomaly-based detection systems, such as statistical-based or clustering algorithms, attempt to address this by analyzing the relative differences in network and host activity. Signature-based IDS systems are typically more accurate for known attacks, but require time and …

Dishsoap For Clean Water: How The Design Of Everyday Objects Can Promote Happiness, Xanthe Matychak Aug 2007

Dishsoap For Clean Water: How The Design Of Everyday Objects Can Promote Happiness, Xanthe Matychak

Theses

This project began with the question: What keeps us from achieving sustainable happiness, happiness for ourselves and future generations? I have chosen to focus on the citizen/consumer conflict which occurs when our consumer choices are incongruous with our moral obligations to society. This conflict is a consequence of the market systems that are in place and consumers’ lack of a critical understanding of these systems. Thus, with this project, I am attempting to make these systems more transparent. Looking at economic approaches like price adjustment and awareness-raising strategies I have focused on the latter. Drawing from the history of semiotics …

Design And Analysis Of Information Fusion, Dynamic Sensor Management Rules For Cyber Security Systems Using Simulation, Katie Mcconky Aug 2007

Design And Analysis Of Information Fusion, Dynamic Sensor Management Rules For Cyber Security Systems Using Simulation, Katie Mcconky

Theses

Computer networks are vulnerable to attacks from outside threats. Intrusion detection systems are used to monitor computer networks for attacker activity. Intrusion detection systems consist of a set of sensors placed strategically throughout a computer network. The large amounts of data produced by intrusion detection system sensors may be sent to and processed by information fusion engines. Information fusion engines correlate alerts and identify attack paths of attackers. Sensor management strategies are developed to minimize the time taken to process attack data, minimize the bandwidth used by the security system of a network, and maximize the number of attacks successfully …

Urban Middle School Students’ Perceptions Of Math And Science Teachers’ Caring Behaviors And Student’S Self Reports Of Academic Competence, Brenda Rhyne

Theses

This research examines urban middle school students' perceptions of their math and science teachers' behaviors. Specific caring behaviors (challenging questions, encouragement and praise, non-verbal support, understanding and friendly, and controlling -- which refer to teacher's expectations for classroom behavior) were evaluated by 101 students (72 girls and 29 boys) in grades 7, 8, and 9 by means of a survey instrument. Research findings support earlier investigations confirming that boys and girls interpret teacher friendliness differently. However, both male and female students reported similar perceptions of their teachers' behaviors with respect to praise, non-verbal support, and controlling. In addition, a strong …

Automatic Image Segmentation By Dynamic Region Growth And Multiresolution Merging, Luis Enrique Garcia Ugarriza Aug 2007

Automatic Image Segmentation By Dynamic Region Growth And Multiresolution Merging, Luis Enrique Garcia Ugarriza

Theses

Image segmentation is a fundamental task in many computer vision applications. We present a novel unsupervised color image segmentation algorithm named GSEG, which exploits the information obtained from detecting edges in color images. By using a color gradient detection technique, pixels without edges are clustered and labeled individually to identify the image content. Elements that contain higher gradient density are included by a dynamic generation of clusters as the segmentation progresses. By quantizing the colors in the image and extracting texture information from the neighborhood entropy of each pixel, the proposed method obtains accurate models of texture that are highly …

Methodology And Optimizing Of Multiple Frame Format Buffering Within Fpga H.264/Avc Decoder With Frext., Timothy Aaron Stotts

Theses

Digital representation of video data is an inherently resource demanding problem that continues to necessitate the development and refinement of coding methods. The H.264/AVC standard, along with its recent Fidelity Range Extensions amendment (FRExt), is quickly being adopted as the standard codec for broadcast and distribution of high definition video. The FRExt amendment, while not necessarily affecting the overall decoder architecture, presents an added complexity of providing efficient memory management for buffering intermediate frames of various pixel color samplings and depths. This thesis evaluated the role of designing the frame buffer of a hardware video decoder, with integrated support for …

Source Localization Within A Uniform Circular Sensor Array, Danny Zhu Jul 2007

Source Localization Within A Uniform Circular Sensor Array, Danny Zhu

Theses

Traditional source localization problems have been considered with linear and planar antenna arrays. In this research work, we assume that the sources are located within a uniformly spaced circular sensor array. Using a modified Metropolis algorithm and Polak-Ribière conjugate gradients, a hybrid optimization algorithm is proposed to localize sources within a two dimensional uniform circular sensor array, which suffers from far field attenuation. The developed algorithm is capable of accurately locating the position of a single, stationary source within 1% of a wavelength and 1° of angular displacement. In the single stationary source case, the simulated Cramer-Rao Lower Bound has …
