Contact Line Pinning Under Ac Electrowetting, Kimberly Bernetski

Theses

Sepsis is an autoimmune disease where a bacterial infection causes organ failure. Early diagnosis is a challenge when using traditional methods. Improvement in early detection is vital in treating patients with sepsis. One method for early detection is through the use of particle deposition patterns from patient urine. Deposition patterns are the remaining particles from an evaporating droplet and can vary based on a variety of factors. To optimize sepsis detection, a digital microfluidic device can be used to manipulate the deposition pattern of a sample to detect target proteins. These devices use microarrays for improved biomarker detection. Microarrays consist …

Improving Developer Profiling And Ranking To Enhance Bug Report Assignment, Andrew Distasi Apr 2019

Improving Developer Profiling And Ranking To Enhance Bug Report Assignment, Andrew Distasi

Theses

Bug assignment plays a critical role in the bug fixing process. However, bug assignment can be a burden for projects receiving a large number of bug reports. If a bug is assigned to a developer who lacks sufficient expertise to appropriately address it, the software project can be adversely impacted in terms of quality, developer hours, and aggregate cost. An automated strategy that provides a list of developers ranked by suitability based on their development history and the development history of the project can help teams more quickly and more accurately identify the appropriate developer for a bug report, potentially …

Tva: A Requirements Driven, Machine-Learning Approach For Addressing Tactic Volatility In Self-Adaptive Systems, Jeffrey Palmerino Apr 2019

Tva: A Requirements Driven, Machine-Learning Approach For Addressing Tactic Volatility In Self-Adaptive Systems, Jeffrey Palmerino

Theses

From self-driving cars to self-adaptive websites, the world is increasingly becoming more reliant on autonomous systems. Similar to many other domains, the system's behavior is often determined by its requirements. For example, a self-adaptive web service is likely to have some maximum value that response time should not surpass. To maintain this requirement, the system uses tactics, which may include activating additional computing resources. In real-world environments, tactics will frequently experience volatility, known as tactic volatility. This can include unstable time required to execute the tactic or frequent fluctuations in the cost to execute the tactic. Unfortunately, current self-adaptive approaches …

Atomistic Simulation For Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Using Nemo5 And Medea-Vasp, Udita Kapoor Apr 2019

Atomistic Simulation For Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Using Nemo5 And Medea-Vasp, Udita Kapoor

Theses

This thesis is an attempt to understand and delve into the realm of atomistic simulations, using it to understand a novel set of materials called Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs). We use NEMO5 and MedeA-VASP to calibrate and characterize a few selected TMDs and to validate our understanding of atomistic modeling we simulated a tunnel field-effect transistor with monolayer TMD as a channel using NEMO5. TFETs offer great advantages over MOSFET (metal oxide field-effect devices) like, sub-60 mV/dec sub-threshold swing, minimal leakage current, high switching speed, and small power requirements. Low drive current has prevented TFETs from becoming a mainstream device …

Convection In Common Envelopes, Emily C. Wilson Feb 2019

Convection In Common Envelopes, Emily C. Wilson

Theses

The outcomes of stellar evolution can be significantly affected by the presence of close substellar or stellar companions. Common envelopes (CE) are thought to be the main channel for producing close binaries in the universe and occur when an orbiting companion is engulfed in the outer layers of the primary’s envelope. CE outcomes are dependent on the fraction of energy from the decaying orbit that can contribute to ejecting the envelope, often defined via an efficiency, α_eff . The post-CE orbital separations and periods can then be determined given knowledge of the binding energy of the primary’s envelope. In this …

Music Retrieval System Using Dynamic Time Warping, Emeka Jude Okafor

Theses

With the growth of digital audio data, various and fast access to music data is strongly desired, especially for large music databases. A more natural way to retrieve a song from a database will be to hum to the tune. To relate and compare musical pieces is a very complex task. Musical compositions usually collapse multiple information sources and complex, multifaceted interactions established between parts. Despite such degrees of complexity, humans are outstandingly good at performing individual musical judgments with little conscious effort, while a computer cannot efficiently achieve this task. In this work, we focus on one such task: …

Reinforcement Learning Reward Design For Low-Level Controllers, Evan J. Olney Jan 2019

Reinforcement Learning Reward Design For Low-Level Controllers, Evan J. Olney

Theses

The past few decades have produced many successful applications of machine learning. In the area of automated controls, machine learning controllers have been developed to take advantage of the tendency for computers to stumble upon avenues to solutions people either overlooked, or simply do not have the computational capability to explore. Reinforcement learning is a machine learning technique for learning how to choose actions in an environment to increase its expected reward. The reward is the signal that indicates whether or not proper actions were chosen, therefore a behavioral goal is achieved from implicit rewards rather than explicit direction. The …

Assessing The Recyclability Of Stainless-Steel Powder Used In Selective Laser Melting-3d Printing, Alexis I. Keaton Jan 2019

Assessing The Recyclability Of Stainless-Steel Powder Used In Selective Laser Melting-3d Printing, Alexis I. Keaton

Theses

Additive manufacturing (AM) is becoming one of the most distinctively growing versatile technologies. In most AM techniques that requires the use of powder, the powder that is not fused into the 3D print can be replenished and used for another build. Unfused powder is generally collected on the powder-bed after an AM build is complete. In most cases, the ability to replenish unfused powder with virgin powder aids in limiting any significant change in powder’s properties that may cause compromising the quality of the 3D prints. If no powder is added to the recycled powder it is likely to shift …

Attempted Synthesis Of 4’-Hydroxyacetophenone-1h-Benzotriazole By Benzyne-Azide Click Chemistry, Kevin Kee-Hoe Cheah

Theses

Ultraviolet light absorber or stabilizer (UVLS) is one of the many additives that is incorporated into a polymer formulation which functions by preferentially absorbing the UV light to prevent its photodegradation. UVLS such as 2-hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole (2H-BZT) and its derivatives are commercially used UV-light absorbers in different polymers. The synthesis of 2H-benzotriazoles solely relies on the two-step azo-coupling of the diazonium salt and reductive cyclization where the former reaction suffers from poor yield.1 The presence of a phenolic hydrogen in the ortho position to the phenyl ring attached to the nitrogen atom on the benzotriazole imparts excellent photochemical stability to the …

Genetics And Molecular Dynamics Of L,L-Diaminopimelate Aminotransferase (Dapl): An Enzyme Involved In Lysine And Peptidoglycan Biosynthesis, Lily E.J. Adams

Theses

The marked increase of bacteria that are resistant to clinically relevant antibiotics in recent years has sparked a push in the development and discovery of novel antibiotics. Complementary to this, the identification of novel antibiotic targets is also of great interest. The lysine biosynthesis pathway is an ideal candidate for these efforts because its product is an essential amino acid. Lysine cannot be synthesized by humans and thus poses minimal risk of side effects if synthesis is targeted. The penultimate product in the lysine biosynthesis pathway, meso-DAP, is also a key component of the gram-negative bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan layer. …

Assessment Of Pre-Eclampsia Risk In Early Pregnancy, Ziad T.A Al-Rubaie Jan 2019

Assessment Of Pre-Eclampsia Risk In Early Pregnancy, Ziad T.A Al-Rubaie

Theses

My thesis aims to improve pre-eclampsia prevention and outcomes in Australian women by providing evidence that can be used to enhance pre-eclampsia risk assessment in broad antenatal settings. I conducted the thesis in three stages. In stage 1, a systematic review identified major limitations in the existing evidence for current guideline approaches and ‘simple’ risk models incorporating maternal characteristics to identify women at increased risk of pre-eclampsia in early pregnancy. While the review demonstrated models including specialised tests such as uterine artery Doppler and serum biomarkers improved sensitivity to predict pre-eclampsia compared to simple models, there was insufficient evidence to …

Comparison Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms For Real Time Prediction Of Uav Behaviors, Brian Baity Jan 2019

Comparison Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms For Real Time Prediction Of Uav Behaviors, Brian Baity

Theses

An American scientific writer/critic of the mid-20th century, Joseph Wood Krutch, stated, “Technology made large populations possible: large populations now make technology indispensable.” Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a vital part of society, evolving from solely military use to commercial and even personal day-to-day use. UAV application has grown for mobility on demand, increasing the number of UAVs in the sky. Consequently, more UAVs increases the possibility of aerial collisions, challenging the safety of passengers flying and bystanders on the ground. Understanding the behavior of UAVs and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in general, therefore, will decrease the possibility of …

An Investigation Into A Proposed Size-Insensitive Fracture Toughness Parameter Obtained From Quasi-Static Fracture Toughness Tests, William G. Tilson

Theses

Material fracture properties are characterized by means of specimen level material tests, such as ASTM Standard E399 Standard Test Method for Linear-Elastic Plane-Strain Fracture Toughness KIc of Metallic Materials. Recent investigations into certain high-toughness alloys have demonstrated a specimen size effect on the results of E399 tests. This thesis describes an experimental investigation into a proposed alternative analysis method for E399 tests that produces a specimen size insensitive result, termed KIsi. The work demonstrates that the alternative approach reduced the specimen size effect, validates assumptions on crack extension, and evaluates proposed test validity requirements. Suggestions for improvements to the KIsi …
