Remnants, Tom Morin

Theses

The primary goal of my thesis project entitled Remnants is transcendence that can lead a viewer or an audience to a new discovery within the Self. I am aware that each individual will experience transcendence in art differently. My intent is for my photography to be the conduit of transcendence, enabling the audience to take part in a discovery of the spiritual and the extraordinary. My thesis subject is erased chalkboards of varying sizes and gestures. In this series, individuals such as teachers and students are shaping the chalkboards' appearance through erasure and are unknowingly creating information and communication for …

Lorem Ipsum, A Story About Words And Pictures: What They Can Do, And What They Can't, David Huth

Theses

Everything we understand about the world comes to us through, and can be captured by, the linguistic use of words and pictures. Or does it? This is a question that addresses the core function and purpose of visual communications design. The question is explored in this film thematically, narratively, and technically, by portraying a story about a person struggling to understand language and solve a unique, high stakes design problem: the library cataloging of an entire human life. This is a creative project that uses computer graphics design technology and the unique presentation of typographical design problems to provoke thought …

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger Nov 2003

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger

Theses

This thesis discusses photographs exhibited at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences Gallery at Rochester Institute of Technology from April 28 - May 10, 2003. In these photographs of desecrated landscapes at liminal times of day, the eerie light and vibrant colors of dusk and dawn enable me to create views of my personal world, a foreign and perilous place for some audiences, an intoxicating and disquieting environment for others. As the light gives way to darkness, the deepening shadows of the vegetation come alive as monstrous figures. Fears lurk in the darkness and become threatening creatures of the …

Data Recording And Analysis Of American Sign Language, Robert Michael Demarco May 2003

Data Recording And Analysis Of American Sign Language, Robert Michael Demarco

Theses

American Sign Language (ASL) is a form of communication that is used by the Deaf. It consists of hand shapes and gestures to express words and phrases. Translators on the market today consist of interpreting a simple form of ASL known as finger spelling. In order to develop a more effective translator, instrumentation was developed utilizing a Flock of Birds and Cyberglove system to record in hand shapes and movements in a LabVIEW environment. Experimentation done included reading in data and subjectively analyzing the data recorded for accuracy. Initial results have show that the instrumentation worked and data was recorded …

Chat And Instant Messaging : The Risks Of Secondary Orality, Gregory P. Kohn May 2003

Chat And Instant Messaging : The Risks Of Secondary Orality, Gregory P. Kohn

Theses

The synchronous nature of chat and instant messaging (IM) make them unique among computer-enabled communications technologies in that their real-time exchange of data allows for rich media experiences, even though users can only use text symbols to trade messages. Chat and IM are also important in that they enable secondary orality, or the merger of the most beneficial aspects of orally-based cultures with the well-documented benefits of print and text. Where print in the modem day has fostered contemplative behavior and inward thought among human beings, chat and IM breathe vitality into print and, in a sense, allow print to …

Special Olympics Participation In School Age Children With Mental Retardation And Its Effects On Self-Esteem, Megan Lococo May 2003

Special Olympics Participation In School Age Children With Mental Retardation And Its Effects On Self-Esteem, Megan Lococo

Theses

A comprehensive review of the literature and interviews with local experts has found a paucity of research on the self-esteem of school-age children with mental retardation. Long (1995), Zic & Igric (2001) and Siperstein & Leffert (1997) found lower self-esteem in self-report measures completed by mentally retarded children and adults. However, the psychometric properties of selfesteem self-report measures have been questioned repeatedly, finding insufficient reliability and validity when applied to mentally retarded populations (Finlay & Lyons, 2001; Widaman et al., 1992). The purpose of this study is twofold; the first goal is to determine the average self-esteem for mentally retarded …

Identifying Characteristics Of Deaf Poor Readers, Susan Post May 2003

Identifying Characteristics Of Deaf Poor Readers, Susan Post

Theses

This study is a spelling recall task. Stimulus words will be presented in three conditions - fingerspelling, sign and print. All subjects will encounter all three lists, presented serially, with brief pauses in between. Each list will comprise 18 words. In order to control for the familiarity effect, no word will be included in more than one list. Students will be instructed to write down the word they see. Data will be analyzed to determine whether or not "poor" readers evidence a different spelling error "profile" than "good readers." Spelling performance will also be correlated with Digit Span (OS) and …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Irish As An L1 Or L2 On Subsequent Instructed Language Acquisition In L3 Or L4, Corina Griffin Jan 2003

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Irish As An L1 Or L2 On Subsequent Instructed Language Acquisition In L3 Or L4, Corina Griffin

Theses

Research in Ireland to date has paid little attention to the fact that all foreign language teaching occurs in the context where the FL (foreign language) is an L3. The present study examines the extent to which students transfer or modify strategies they had previously deployed in learning Irish to their L3/L4. It is proposed that students are deploying the same strategies in their learning of Irish as an L1/L2 and the foreign language (FL) as an L3/L4, thus indicating a similar approach to the learning process. Cognitive, metacognitive and socio-affective strategies are examined. The research also focuses on differences …

Using Natural Language Parsers For Authorship Attribution, Westerly A D Magnera Jan 2003

Using Natural Language Parsers For Authorship Attribution, Westerly A D Magnera

Theses

The goal of authorship attribution is to find a set of unconscious writing characteristics or style features that distinguish text written by one person from text written by another. Once these features are found, they can be used to pair a text with the individual who wrote it. It is now well accepted that authors develop distinct and unconscious writing features. Over one thousand stylometric features (style markers) have been proposed in a variety of research disciplines [44] but none of that research has looked at the syntactic structure of the text. I conjectures that the distinct writing features of …

Narrative, Meaning Making And Personal Development: Teachers' Storied Experience In Montessori, Steiner And Other Primary Classrooms, Gayle C. Ward

Theses

This study explored how narrative was being used to foster meaning-making in Montessori, Steiner, Government and Catholic schools. In-depth interviews of twelve teachers from the four educational settings were used to collect the teachers' stories that comprised the data on narrative use. NUD*IST software was employed to organise data and to focus on emerging concepts through data analysis. A wide spectrum of narrative uses related to meaning making was revealed. These varied understandings support using narrative to foster insight on three levels relating to several theoretical views of narrative and its importance.
