Difficulties And Principles Of Drama Translation: With Special Reference To Jabra And Niazi’S Translation Of Macbeth’S Soliloquies, Wissal Ali Jaffar Al Allaq

Theses

Drama is one of the most significant literary genres. The primary characteristic that sets drama apart from any other literary form is 'performance on stage'. Other elements contribute to its impact such as speakability and performability and the extra linguistic features drama possesses. Translating drama and assessing the quality if its translation should therefore consider such elements. AI-Qinai's seven parameters of translation quality assessment (TQA) are employed in assessing two Arabic translations of Shakespeare's Macbeth produced by Jabra Ibrahim Jabra (1980) and Salah Niazi (2000). Mismatches between the source text (ST) and the target texts, (TT1 and TT2) are highlighted. …

Evaluating The Relationship Between Derived Relational Responding, Verbal Operant Development, And Linguistic Structure: Correlating The Peak-E-Pa, The Ablls-R, And The Told-I:4, Bridget Munoz

Theses

The increasing prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder has produced a longstanding relevance for continued progressive measures towards a systematic approach to the treatment of deficient language repertoires. Current behavior analytic assessments, such as the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised (ABLLS-R), have demonstrated utility in providing relative measures of the functional characteristics of an individual’s language and learner repertoire, as consistent with a traditional Skinnerian approach. Further assessments have been created under other existing theoretical frameworks, such as the Test of Language Development (TOLD), and the Promoting the Emergence of Advanced Knowledge Relational Training System (PEAK). Each assessment was …

The present study aimed to contribute further empirical evidence about the effectiveness of academic training on the development of the writing skills of Vietnamese second language learners enrolled in an undergraduate English program. The investigation was designed in view of the L2 …

Knowledge-Based Decision Making For Simulating Cyber Attack Behaviors, Stephen Frank Moskal Jul 2016

Knowledge-Based Decision Making For Simulating Cyber Attack Behaviors, Stephen Frank Moskal

Theses

Computer networks are becoming more complex as the reliance on these network increases in this era of exponential technological growth. This makes the potential gains for criminal activity on these networks extremely serious and can not only devastate organizations or enterprises but also the general population. As complexity of the network increases so does the difficulty to protect the networks as more potential vulnerabilities are introduced. Despite best efforts, traditional defenses like Intrusion Detection Systems and penetration tests are rendered ineffective to even amateur cyber adversaries. Networks now need to be analyzed at all times to preemptively detect weaknesses which …

Vertourist: Providing Accuracy In Language Translations, Using An Online Workforce, Shubhneek Dhillon

Theses

Language is our greatest mediator that allows us to relate to and understand each other. Linguistic boundaries cause a massive downside for travelers. They often find it difficult to communicate with locals in another country to learn more about the foreign culture, country, aesthetics and life. It’s even more critical for the people who are deaf.

Human generated translation is much more accurate than computer generated translation. Travelers often rely on computer-generated translation that result in more confusion when the person is trying to communicate with in a foreign language. My thesis will address this issue using social media. A …

Theses

The job of an archive is to collect and preserve primary source material that is consistent with its mission and to make sure that it is accessible to the public. It is the work of the archivist to choose what is useful to collect and preserve. Archivists also have to consider the preservation needs of all items that make it into the collection. They also have to review the collection for items that do not conform to the mission and therefore must be deaccessioned. My thesis involves applying the best practices of appraisal and deaccession to the Mark Ellingson Collection, …

An example of such a magazine is Vogue, which has been in publication for 120 years and is produced today in 23 different countries and regions worldwide. Designed to disseminate high-end designer fashion, Vogue seeks to make these fashions, and the ideology embedded in them, accessible to a general public through the high quality styling in their fashion and editorial photography, and through their lifestyle articles. In this way fashion magazines are one of the cultural institutions that help women shape their definition of …

Accessibility Practices & The Inclusive Museum: Legal Compliance, Professional Standards, And The Social Responsibility Of Museums, Ruth Erin Starr May 2016

Accessibility Practices & The Inclusive Museum: Legal Compliance, Professional Standards, And The Social Responsibility Of Museums, Ruth Erin Starr

Theses

The desire of museums to improve accessibility for diverse visitors is often driven by the need to satisfy legal obligations. However, many museums share a fundamental goal to engage the most diverse audience as possible. This thesis illustrates the distinction between perceiving accessibility within cultural institutions as a legal or social issue and how that perception influences museum practice, within the United States. Bridging museum studies, disability theory, and advocacy practice this thesis works to answer the question: How does viewing accessibility as a social responsibility, rather than legal necessity influence an institution’s ability to be inclusive to diverse communities? …

Structure-Constrained Basis Pursuit For Compressively Sensing Speech, Miguel Dominguez May 2016

Structure-Constrained Basis Pursuit For Compressively Sensing Speech, Miguel Dominguez

Theses

Compressed Sensing (CS) exploits the sparsity of many signals to enable sampling below the Nyquist rate. If the original signal is sufficiently sparse, the Basis Pursuit (BP) algorithm will perfectly reconstruct the original signal. Unfortunately many signals that intuitively appear sparse do not meet the threshold for "sufficient sparsity". These signals require so many CS samples for accurate reconstruction that the advantages of CS disappear. This is because Basis Pursuit/Basis Pursuit Denoising only models sparsity. We developed a "Structure-Constrained Basis Pursuit" that models the structure of somewhat sparse signals as upper and lower bound constraints on the Basis Pursuit Denoising …

From Poetry To Pedagogy: Exploring The Intersections Of Disability Studies And Feminist Theories, Lauren Terbrock

Theses

The two chapters that make up this thesis are culmination of my master’s degree work. While I know this is the point of a thesis, I feel like this project is exceptionally representative of all of the directions my thinking has gone in the last few years. Most predominantly, my work has caused a major rift in how I think about English Studies. On one hand, I am a literature person — I have a certain attachment to literary analysis. It is where I hit my stride and decided to take the path to a doctoral degree. On the other …

Personalities Of The Chinese Zodiac, Tang-Hsuan Liu

Theses

3D animation has been trending for many years now. Many stories and the characters in those stories are being re-designed and represented by 3D.

Stories I grew up with in Taiwan are so different from those popular in Western culture. While I enjoyed Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Mickey Mouse, I also loved many classic Chinese stories, one of them being that of the Chinese Zodiac.

This story is about animals having a race to decide who will be the only 12 animals that represent each year. They are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, chicken, dog …

Lateralization Of Tempo Processing And Sensorimotor Synchronization, Robert P. Noneman Jan 2016

Lateralization Of Tempo Processing And Sensorimotor Synchronization, Robert P. Noneman

Theses

Previous neurological literature has proposed a potential specialization of the right hemisphere for tempo processes; however, this hypothesis had yet to be tested via behavioral measures within the cognitive literature. The present study was designed to investigate a potential specialization of the right hemisphere in tempo perception and production using a dichotic listening task paradigm by employing a 2 (Target Ear: left, right) x 2 (Responding Hand: left, right) x 3 (Target Stimulus: same, decreasing, increasing) in a within subjects design presenting isochronous tones. Although an ear advantage for tempo perception ability was not detected, we confirmed the left ear …

The Paul Warnke Nomination : The Construction Of A Controversy And The Reformation Of U.S. Strategic Doctrine In The Public Sphere, Jennifer L. Mellard

Theses

In January, 1977, President Jimmy Carter's nomination of the "assured destruction" advocate Paul C. Warnke to the dual posts of chief negotiator for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II) and director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (ACDA) led to a national controversy. The Senate confirmed Warnke by only a slim voting margin of 58-40 for negotiator and 70-29 for director. Commentators have attributed the nomination's controversial status and results of the vote against him solely to his reputation as an arms controller and for the purpose of controlling SALT II Treaty negotiations. Warnke's private papers, chronological attention …

Play - Lost In Transition? Teacher Beliefs About Pedagogic Continuity Across The Transition To Formal Schooling, Linda Bellen Jan 2016

Play - Lost In Transition? Teacher Beliefs About Pedagogic Continuity Across The Transition To Formal Schooling, Linda Bellen

Theses

In the current educational climate of teacher accountability, high-stakes assessment and outcomes-based learning, play as a valued pedagogy is being questioned more than ever. In Australia, the recent push-down effect of an academic curriculum has resulted in the ‘schoolification’ of prior-to-school settings, with less emphasis on play-based pedagogy. Traditionally, in early childhood education, the dominant pedagogy is play-based and is used to support and facilitate children’s learning, while in schools learning is more formalised, directed and structured with the presence of a mandated curriculum. This ideological divide in pedagogical approaches between the two contexts is first evident as children begin …
