Finite Element Analysis Of Embedded Blood Vessel Mechanics, I-En Lin Apr 1989

Finite Element Analysis Of Embedded Blood Vessel Mechanics, I-En Lin

Theses

Cardiac pump function is closely linked to myocardial oxygen supply during the cardiac cycle. Variations in cardiac output must be met with concurrent shifts in tissue blood flow if changing myocardial oxygen requirements are to be satisfied. Of particular importance is the adequate perfusion of the left ventricular myocardium. Experimental evidence indicates that some ninety percent of left ventricular oxygen demand is generated during systolic contraction of the myocardium. Paradoxically, blood flow measurements in the left coronary artery suggest minimal systolic perfusion. The asynchronous, phasic character of left coronary blood flow and myocardial oxygen demand has prompted much research into …

Environmental Assessment In Bioethanol Technology Using Immobilized Yeast Cells, Minoo Kandy Zarnegar

Theses

This study is undertaken from the standpoint of water pollution evaluation in bioethanol technology, using immobilized yeast cells. Evaluation of water pollution caused by immobilized yeast fermentation is the main objective of this research.

The pollution in water remaining at the end of ethanol production, which is normally discharged in the wastewater stream, has been analyzed by the measurement of biological oxygen demand (BOD), since BOD measurement is one of the widely used parameters for water pollution evaluation. BOD obtained from produced water (stillage) was between the range of 115- 360 mg/l. The variation in BOD depended upon the removal …

Effects Of Irradiation On The Rate Of Water Vapor Transmission Of Food Packaging Materials, Reginald L. A. Vas Jan 1989

Effects Of Irradiation On The Rate Of Water Vapor Transmission Of Food Packaging Materials, Reginald L. A. Vas

Theses

Food can be preserved by irradiation which is the exposure of food to ionising radiation, high energy electron from electron beams or X-rays or gamma rays from Cobalt-60 or Cesium-137 radioisotopes. Irradiation does not leave a residue in the food and it does not make it radioactive. The low level energy levels of Cobalt and Cesium isotopic gamma rays does not induce any radioactivity. Irradiation has the same preservative effect on food as heat treatment, but because irradiation does not appreciably raise the temperature of the food, it is known as 'cold sterilization'.

Irradiation can potentially be used to preserve …

A Dynamic Model Of Fill-And-Draw Reactor Utilizing An Inhibitory Substrate, Yun-Fei Ko Dec 1988

A Dynamic Model Of Fill-And-Draw Reactor Utilizing An Inhibitory Substrate, Yun-Fei Ko

Theses

A dynamic model of a fill-and-draw reactor has been developed, which includes a number of operational parameters, the fraction of total cycle time devoted to fill, reaction and draw, and the concentration of the toxic substance in the feed to the reactor.

Operating diagrams have been generated, from which one can choose suitable operating parameters.

The model has been solved numerically for Andrews kinetics ( substrate inhibition ), and tested experimentally, using a 5-liter fill-and-draw reactor with phenol as sole carbon source and a pure culture of Pseudomonas putida. Results compared very well to the model predictions.
