A Global Sensitivity Analysis Of Photochemical Models Used For Predicting Tropospheric Ozone, Daniel Wimer Jan 2002

A Global Sensitivity Analysis Of Photochemical Models Used For Predicting Tropospheric Ozone, Daniel Wimer

Theses

The Clean Air Act requires the use of complex photochemical models to predict future ozone concentrations and the impact of current and future regulations. In many instances uncertainty in the data input parameters used to operate these models results in uncertainty in the prediction of future air quality. The degree of this uncertainty is often greater than the degreee of air quality improvements proposed by regulations. This study evaluates the sensitivity of a photochemical model to predict future ozone air quality with respect to the uncertainty of several critical input parameters. These parameters are: Transported ozone (ozone aloft) Biogenic emissions …

Evaluation Of The Change On Water Vapor Transmission Rate Of Different Polypropylene Films In Contact With D-Limoneme And The Effect Such Changes Have On The Shelf Life Of Confectionary Products., Anna Romero

Theses

This paper discusses the changes observed in Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) of three plastic films while exposed to different concentrations of d-limoneme. The concentration of d-limoneme on the films was determined by means of Headspace Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. The Water Vapor Transmission rate of all films was determined by means of a MOCON-Water Vapor Permeation Analysis System Permatran-W 3/31. It was observed that d-limoneme affected the films in two ways: at lower concentrations, the WVTR decreased but, after certain concentration was reached, the WVTR increased. These results explain the shortened shelf-life of candies containing d-limoneme which are …

Adaptive Radio Resource Management For 2.5g Cellular Networks, Ken Murray Jan 2002

Adaptive Radio Resource Management For 2.5g Cellular Networks, Ken Murray

Theses

Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in demand for mobile communication services and with the introduction of 2.5G services such as general packet radio service, this trend is expected to increase further. These new services will introduce highly dynamic tele-traffic variations due to the inherent variability in resource usage of the new data services. The net effect will be considerable increase in load on the available radio resources. The currently employed fixed channel allocation scheme lacks the flexibility to support such traffic variations. A plethora of dynamic channel allocation schemes have been proposed in the past in an effort …

The Potential For Public Opinion To Generate Change In Policy Formation, Peter M. Roguszka Jan 2002

The Potential For Public Opinion To Generate Change In Policy Formation, Peter M. Roguszka

Theses

Towards the end of the Twentieth Century there were a number of examples of change to public policy that were not the product of political debate and public consideration. Rather, they appear to have originated in another less visible, and therefore less open to critique manner. It is argued that it is changes to the general thrust of public opinion that have given validity to these policy changes. The ways in which changes to public opinion are caused to change and by whom are investigated and a theory of 'Australian Public Opinion Change' is developed. This theory is applied to …

Theological Reflections On Leadership In Christian Community, Gerard O'Neill

Theses

This paper examines the dynamics involved in Christian community, paying particular attention to the pivotal role leadership plays in nurturing and sustaining the life of the community. It begins by analysing the human need for community if people are to fulfill their potential both individually and communally. Time is devoted to understanding Christian community from a Scriptural perspective and a caution is sounded not to envisage Christian community in purely mechanistic terms. The doctrine of the trinity of God is used as a lens to view vital characteristics in the life of a Christian community. The theology of leadership is …

Analyzing The Costs/Tradeoffs Involved Between Layer 2, Layer 3, Layer 4 And Layer 5 Switching, Gautam Kapur Jan 2002

Analyzing The Costs/Tradeoffs Involved Between Layer 2, Layer 3, Layer 4 And Layer 5 Switching, Gautam Kapur

Theses

The switching function was primarily entrusted to Layer 2 of the OSI model, i.e. the Data Link Layer. A Layer 2 switch performs forwarding decisions by analyzing the MAC (Media Access Control) address of the destination segment in the frame. The Layer 2 switch checks for the destination address and transmits the packet to the appropriate segment if the address is present in its table of known destinations. If the entry for that address is not present, the switch then forwards the packet to all segments except the one on which it came from. This is known as flooding. When …

Band Selection And Algorithm Development For Remote Sensing Of Wildfires, Andrew Fordham Jan 2002

Band Selection And Algorithm Development For Remote Sensing Of Wildfires, Andrew Fordham

Theses

The environmental damage and global change caused by wildfires are fast becoming issues of local, regional and global concern. Remote sensing techniques are an ideal tool to use for monitoring these threats. Reductive Amination Of (Alpha) - Amino Acids: Solution - Phase Synthesis, Rohini D'Souza Jul 2001

Reductive Amination Of (Alpha) - Amino Acids: Solution - Phase Synthesis, Rohini D'Souza

Theses

Preparation of a small library of secondary amino acids was achieved by solution-phase organic synthesis using reductive amination reactions with selected cc-amino acids and aromatic aldehydes. Reductive amination employing sodium triacetoxyborohydride instead of sodium cyanoborohydride was found to give shorter reaction times and much safer byproducts. With less sterically hindered a-amino acids, direct reductive amination generally yielded the bisalkylated product. However, monoalkylation was achieved by adopting an indirect reductive amination route. Reaction mixtures were characterized by HPLC and LC-MS, resulting in the synthesis of a 21 compound library.
