Incongruent Perceptions And Training Styles: The Paramedic In Conflict With The Emotionally Charged Bystander, Bram Duffee May 2002

Incongruent Perceptions And Training Styles: The Paramedic In Conflict With The Emotionally Charged Bystander, Bram Duffee

Theses

Incongruent perceptions can exacerbate conflict situations with emotionally charged patients, family members, and bystanders when the paramedic is providing treatment to a critical patient. This bestows the paramedic with the responsibility of not only working to save the life of the patient, but also working to resolve conflicts that may constrain medical treatment. Therefore, in these situations, paramedics must have the communication skills that allow them to provide quality patient care. This phenomenon is investigated through a native anthropologist perspective by asking paramedics to give their personal accounts of conflicts they have had with emotionally charged stakeholders when treating a …

Rescue Of Embryonic Dysmorphogenesis In Diabetic Rats By Using The Antioxidant Α- Lipoic Acid, Muhaira Hamad Majed Al Ghafli May 2002

Rescue Of Embryonic Dysmorphogenesis In Diabetic Rats By Using The Antioxidant Α- Lipoic Acid, Muhaira Hamad Majed Al Ghafli

Theses

Background:

The risk of congenital anomalies in children of diabetic mothers is three to four times that in offspring of non-diabetic mothers. The exact mechanisms of these birth defects are not known. Of the several factors suggested to contribute to embryonic maldevelopment in diabetic pregnancy, the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent disturbances to cellar defenses appears to be a plausible hypothesis. Antioxidants have been reported to rescue the embryos from being malformed in animal experiments. This study was aimed to determine if the ideal antioxidant lipoic acid would ameliorate the embryos from maternal diabetes-induced anomalies.

Methods:

Female …

An Investigation Into The Sources Of Vehicle Tire Noise, John Paoff Apr 2002

An Investigation Into The Sources Of Vehicle Tire Noise, John Paoff

Theses

Noise produced by a rolling tire on pavement has plagued automakers for years due to its complexity. Tire noise is dependent on many things such as tire material, tire construction, road surface texture, etc. In this investigation, an acoustical approach to modeling tire noise is presented. Based on the mechanics of a rotating tire, acoustical models can be developed. This, along with some acoustical analysis, leads to mathematical models that one can utilize in order to predict the noise that the tire will produce. These models will provide a good basis and starting point for reduction of tire noise and …

Reconstructing The Boundary Of A Web Document, James Sweet

Theses

Documents found on the World Wide Web (WWW) may be composed of a single web page, or several web pages that are linked together by a table of contents or some other commonly known document construct. When a document spans multiple web pages, it is often inconvenient to print or download the entire document using available tools. This thesis introduces a concept called the document boundary to facilitate representation and analysis of multi-page web documents, and suggests a two-phase approach towards automated identification of document boundaries. In the first phase, individual pages are examined to determine which links are most …

An Evaluation Of Relationship Marketing And Customer Retention Practices In The Hotel Industry, Lisa Kenny Jan 2002

An Evaluation Of Relationship Marketing And Customer Retention Practices In The Hotel Industry, Lisa Kenny

Theses

Customer relationships have received considerable attention from both academics and practitioners. It is accepted that relationship marketing is keeping, not just getting customers, (Berry, 1983). However, it has been criticised that firms frequently focus on attracting customers (the “first act”) but then pay little attention to what they should do to keep them (the “second act”) (Berry and Parasuraman, 1991). It has been demonstrated that it is far less expensive to retain a customer than to acquire a new one. The increasing emphasis of relationship marketing is based on the assumptions that building committed customer relationships results in guest satisfaction, …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Lung Function And Aerobic Capacity In People With Asthma., Pat Flanagan Jan 2002

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Lung Function And Aerobic Capacity In People With Asthma., Pat Flanagan

Theses

The prevalence of asthma is rapidly increasing throughout the world. Many developed countries have reported a greater incidence and severity of asthma in both adults and children (Woolcock and Peat, 1997). Up to 90% of those diagnosed with asthma will experience some asthma symptoms during or after exercise. This condition is known as Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA). The severity of the bout of EIA depends mainly on the type, intensity and duration of the exercise session. Environmental conditions, medication and possibly the level of fitness of the individual may also influence EIA (Storms and Joyner, 1999; Guill, 1996; Weiler, 1996).
