Role-Playing And Simulation Gaming Techniques In An American Government Curriculum, Ellen J. Mulder Mar 1989

Role-Playing And Simulation Gaming Techniques In An American Government Curriculum, Ellen J. Mulder

Theses

American government is the study of democracy. It is a subject which one would like students to be excited about and involved in. as young persons, and ultimately, as adults . Teaching methods determine student Involvement or level of class participation. As young people seem to thrive on action, it is important to consider the nature of the child and choose activities which encourage their personal participation. Role-playing and simulation give students the chance to learn about the government by participating in an active imitation of the system. These methods also give students a chance to add their own creative …

Development Of Thinking Skills Through Historical Fiction With Intermediate And Middle School Students: A Book Manuscript, Rebecca Hicks Jan 1988

Development Of Thinking Skills Through Historical Fiction With Intermediate And Middle School Students: A Book Manuscript, Rebecca Hicks

Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop a book manuscript incorporating higher-order thinking skill development with the reading of American historical fiction . Current literature showed the necessity for promoting higher-order thinking skills among today's students. It was found that current textbooks did not sufficiently address higher-order thinking questioning. It was also found that many thinking skill materials did not integrate those skills with academic content. The information gathered was then used to formulate a book integrating higher-order thinking skills with read- aloud American historical fiction. The book manuscript was to be utilized by intermediate and middle school teachers.

The Relationship Between Computer Interaction And Individual User Characteristics, Kathleen Lambert Jan 1988

The Relationship Between Computer Interaction And Individual User Characteristics, Kathleen Lambert

Theses

Development of effective human computer interaction is being approached independently by two disciplines -- user interface design and computer aided instruction. The lack of communication between the two fields has left each separately pursuing different paths toward the same goals. This thesis attempts to bridge the gap between these two disciplines. An exploratory study was conducted to analyze whether user choices in a computer aided instruction environment and personality types as defined by the Myers-Briggs type indicator are related strongly enough to provide the basis for future user models. The results demonstrated that no single instructional strategy was preferred, implying …

Create A New Town And A New You To Improve Writing Skills, Barbara Broadfoot

Theses

Writing has always been one of the corners tones of American education . Schools are concerned with the development of students, and writing contributes to the development of the whole person. The public is alarmed because many students graduate from high school without being able to write well enough to function in today's complicated society.

There a re many reasons why schools fail to do a good job in the teaching of writing. One of the main reasons is the schools' over-emphasis on the teaching of grammar. Many teachers are not trained as teachers of writing and rely on the …

Contrasts In Management And Productivity Between The Japanese And American Systems; (What Can And What Is Being Done), Jim Venables

Theses

This paper, "Contrasts in Management and Productivity Between the Japanese and American Systems; (What Can and What Is Being Done)" by Jim Venables, provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of Japanese and American management styles, highlighting their impact on productivity, corporate culture, and organizational effectiveness. Beginning with Japan’s post-World War II industrial ascent, the study attributes much of the nation's economic success to superior managerial practices rather than external factors such as labor costs or resources. The paper juxtaposes two corporate giants—Matsushita Electric (Panasonic) and International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT)—as representative models of their respective systems.

The Japanese model, exemplified by …

A Curriculum For The Gifted Kindergarten Program On The Lindenwood College Campus, Kay Hoffmeister May 1984

A Curriculum For The Gifted Kindergarten Program On The Lindenwood College Campus, Kay Hoffmeister

Theses

The establishment of a kindergarten for gifted children on the campus of Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Missouri, created the need for a curriculum designed to meet the special strengths and weaknesses of those who would attend.

While these children often possessed advanced skills in reading and math, they were still five-year-olds with certain emotional, social and physical limitations due to their young age.

Also, research suggested that high IQ scores and accelerated cognitive, left brain learning did not usually exist with high levels of creativity. Yet futurists noted that creative, divergent thought skills would be essential in the world of …

The Installation Of A Standard Cost System In A Small Manufacturing Environment, Joseph M. Taylor Jan 1983

The Installation Of A Standard Cost System In A Small Manufacturing Environment, Joseph M. Taylor

Theses

This culminating project by Joseph M. Taylor presents a detailed case study of the installation of a standard cost system in a small manufacturing environment, specifically at Hofman Manufacturing, Inc.—a pseudonym for a real St. Louis-based hardware company. The project explores the integration of management accounting principles with a computerized management information system, aiming to improve internal planning and control processes. Prior to the system's implementation, Hofman Mfg. lacked an internal accounting department, relying instead on external public accountants. The absence of timely and accurate cost data hindered effective pricing and decision-making, particularly amid a volatile economic environment.

Through direct …

Bedouin Textiles Of Saudi Arabia, Celia Wright May 1982

Bedouin Textiles Of Saudi Arabia, Celia Wright

Theses

During the past year I have had the opportunity of working closely with a collection of Saudi Arabian woven textiles and other crafts. These textiles are characterized by the combination of a great variety of techniques, indicating a diffusion of techniques between the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent cultures. The frequent combination of both warp-faced and weft-faced structures within a single woven piece is particularly fascinating, as it rarely occurs in other cultures. This thesis will research the techniques and designs used in Saudi weaving and in the weaving of adjacent and related cultures in Africa and the Middle East which …
