A Study Of The Halftone Dot Characteristics Of Rapid Access Halftones, John Gilliatt Sep 1983

A Study Of The Halftone Dot Characteristics Of Rapid Access Halftones, John Gilliatt

Theses

Rapid access processing is a photographic processing method that combines high temperature processing and high energy developing agents to obtain very short induction periods, and thus, reduced processing times. In order to obtain maximum quality from the process, the rapid access halftone percent dot areas must be correctly evaluated according to established aim points. Traditional evaluation methods, either visual or instrumental, produce errors. These errors are the partial result of the unique dot characteristics of the process. These characteristics include soft, fringed dots; dots with low Dmax, found particularily in the shadow areas; loss of dot area on the tips …

A Writing Curriculum For Grade Five Using Literary Models, Virginia Ann Smith Aug 1983

A Writing Curriculum For Grade Five Using Literary Models, Virginia Ann Smith

Theses

Three major areas of concern influenced this writer's decision to investigate writing and develop a writing curriculum for fifth grade children based on the use of literary models as springboards for writing .

Recognition of the importance of adequate writing skills in order to participate in various functions of our society provided the first area of concern. The second major concern was related to the apparent difficulties and failures experienced by students in coping with the complexities of the writing process. This concern stemmed from classroom experiences while trying to help children learn writing skills. A third area of concern …

Difficulties Of Learning English As A Second Language For Thai Speakers, Tipsuda Rutngamlug Jul 1983

Difficulties Of Learning English As A Second Language For Thai Speakers, Tipsuda Rutngamlug

Theses

The primary hypothetical question for this study was: Would a formal ESL program make a decided difference in terms of reducing English phonological and syntactic problems for Thai speakers learning English? The linguistic data was collected from a limited sample (22) of native Thai speakers in the St. Louis area. The subjects were divided into two groups: those with ESL training (Group 1) and those without ESL training (Group 2). A series of identical selected sentences were recorded from both groups. The selected sentences contained phonological and syntactic English structures which have been found to be problematic for Thai speakers. …

Technology In The Late Twentieth Century: Humanism Versus Technocracy, A Philosophical Inquiry, Peter Moss Handler Jun 1983

Technology In The Late Twentieth Century: Humanism Versus Technocracy, A Philosophical Inquiry, Peter Moss Handler

Theses

As an artist in metal living and working in the last part of the twentieth century, I feel it to be important that my work relate to this specific period of time. That is, to look where we are going becomes more important than where we have been. The most powerful single influence on where we are going, in my judgment, is technology. The images of technology, not the things of it, become my starting place. My intent, however, is not merely to celebrate technology. That is an uncritical attitude.

Synthesis Of Mono- And Dialkyl Catechol Ethers, Sujitra Dhumrongvaraporn Jun 1983

Synthesis Of Mono- And Dialkyl Catechol Ethers, Sujitra Dhumrongvaraporn

Theses

Estabrook and coworkers have developed an enzymatic analysis for the oxidation of catechol depicted in Figure 1b. The rate of this oxidation (k2) is so high that the

[Figure 1.]

rate of the O-dealkylation reactions of monocatechol ethers (k1) may perhaps be conveniently followed by monitoring catechol concentrations as it is produced. That is with k2 >> k1, a combined dealkylation and oxidation enzymatic system might be developed to provide kinetic data on step 1, ie. on k1 values.

With this in mind, a series of appropriate substrates ie. O-monoalkyl catechol ethers needed …

A Model To Predict The Reflectance From A Concrete Surface As A Function Of The Sun-Object-Image Angular Relationship, George C. Grogan Jun 1983

A Model To Predict The Reflectance From A Concrete Surface As A Function Of The Sun-Object-Image Angular Relationship, George C. Grogan

Theses

A study was made of the variation in the reflectance of a concrete sample as the sun-object-image angular relationship was varied. The research work was performed in the controlled conditions of a laboratory so that atmospheric effects could be neglected. Reflectance measurements were taken from a. concrete sample whose surface roughness had been measured. Both specular and diffuse illumination in the red (630 - 680nm) wavelength region of the visible spectrum were measured. A model which can be used to predict the reflectance value for a given sun-object-image angular relationship was developed. Actual reflectance measurements taken outdoors agreed to within …

The Operational Utility Of The Walton-Mckersie Attitudinal Structuring Model In Collective Bargaining, Donald Warren May 1983

The Operational Utility Of The Walton-Mckersie Attitudinal Structuring Model In Collective Bargaining, Donald Warren

Theses

This work is an heuristic inquiry into behavioral change theory designed for application to labor/management interaction in collective bargaining. The theory itself was postulated by Richard E. Walton and Robert B. McKersie in their book A Behavioral Theory Of Labor Negotiations. The principles of their theory are highly axiomatic and their importance and validity can only be recognized through applied empirical analyses that demonstrate or refute its concept.

The aspect of the theory which is the focal point of this research pertains to the structuring and restructuring of attitudes and attendant relationships resulting from the collective bargaining process. The objective …

An Improvement In The Chemical Engineering Simulation System, Roman Andreyuk May 1983

An Improvement In The Chemical Engineering Simulation System, Roman Andreyuk

Theses

The accurate design of chemical processing plants is important to the chemical engineer. The original version of CHESS (Chemical Engineering Simulation System) greatly reduced the amount of time which previously had to be spent on the design of such plants by providing the engineer with a package which simulated some of the more common pieces of chemical processing equipment found in a typical chemical plant.

The present version of the Chemical Engineering Simulation System (CHESS2) presents a significant improvement over the original version. The improvement was achieved by expanding the thermodynamic package, offering the user a choice of methods by …

The application of image enhancement techniques (high order and low order enhancement methods ) as well as edge detection using a …

The Quantitative Determination Of The Elemental Composition Of Coal Fly Ash Samples Using X-Ray Fluorescence, Joseph R. Cervassi May 1983

The Quantitative Determination Of The Elemental Composition Of Coal Fly Ash Samples Using X-Ray Fluorescence, Joseph R. Cervassi

Theses

Bulk constituent elements contained in coal fly ash were measured by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy in eight samples. Four samples were used as calibration standards for the spectrometer since their compositions were previously determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Calibration coefficients of the standards were calculated with computer assisted regression analysis of the fluorescence spectra, and used to determine the composition of the remaining four samples. The compositions of the latter four samples, as predicted by X-ray fluorescence, were then compared to atomic absorption results. X-ray fluorescence and atomic absorption results agree best when the concentrations of elements in the standards are …

Computer Simulation Of The Respiratory System, Bruce Diner May 1983

Computer Simulation Of The Respiratory System, Bruce Diner

Theses

The respiratory system was simulated utilizing a series of three models, each more complex than the previous. The first model simulated the respiratory system as a two compartment model driven by carbon dioxide concentration. The second model, also a two compartment model, simulated periodic breathing while the third model is a three compartment model and simulates acid-base balance disturbances.

In this study, the effects of hyperthyroidism and respiratory center depression on respiration premeasured utilizing the models to obtain data and then compare the results to known physiologic data.

Proposed Product Plan For A High Growth, High Technology Organization, Alan R. Eschbach May 1983

Proposed Product Plan For A High Growth, High Technology Organization, Alan R. Eschbach

Theses

Analyzing and consequently redefining a corporation's product line or mix is an important task facing all manufacturing organizations. While this task is usually addressed in detail as part of an organization's business plan, it can be very disconcerting when an organization realizes that the markets and products that got them to where they are now will not necessarily be the ones that will give them the growth that they would like to realize. Redefining the product line can be even more critical to young, high technology organizations who have never done it before and have found themselves facing the possibility …

Management Of The Interface Between Product Design And Production, Adam Fischer May 1983

Management Of The Interface Between Product Design And Production, Adam Fischer

Theses

The goal of this thesis was to identify some of the many obstacles which tend to, in some way or manner, delay the timely, satisfactory progression of new developments from becoming new profit items. These obstacles which are numerous are the results of personal observation plus research of many books and periodicals. The identification of the obstacles will hopefully result in their obviation. Notable accomplishments along these lines tend to:

1. Reduce the loss of opportunity to gain an appreciable market share.

2. Reduce investment/overhead cost by earlier recovery of cost through earlier marketing effort.

3. Reduce continuing engineering costs …

A Finite Difference Solution Of An Ideal, Normal, Impinging Jet, Luis A. Gast May 1983

A Finite Difference Solution Of An Ideal, Normal, Impinging Jet, Luis A. Gast

Theses

The free boundary of a circular jet of an irrotational, inviscid, incompressible, fluid impinging normally to a flat surface from a height of 2 times the nozzle radius, was found by a finite difference method.

Starting with a graphical solution, approximate values of the potential were given to the nodes at the field.

Having the equipotential lines perpendicular to the axis of the jet, perpendicular to the impinging surface, and having defined the value of the potential at both the entrance and exit of the jet, a finite difference expression of the Laplace's equation was used in an iteration scheme …

The material properties of fibrous concrete is briefly discussed on how the addition of fibers benefits the concrete mix. The results of the compressive and tensile behavior of fibrous concrete is presented. The behavior of bending on reinforced fibrous concrete columns is also briefly discussed.

Previous investigation results, …

An Analysis For The Blade Coating Of Ctbn Modified Epoxy Adhesive, Jeng-Li Liang May 1983

An Analysis For The Blade Coating Of Ctbn Modified Epoxy Adhesive, Jeng-Li Liang

Theses

A resin metering criterion has been developed for processing the prepregs of CTBN-EPOXY resin in which the resin content can be controlled within close tolerances. This criterion was obtained by numerically simulating the flow of CTBN-EPDXY resin in the blade-type metering device at room temperature. The Newtonion case of CTBN-EPOXY resin was selected for the study to avoid dealing with more complicated flow equations. A methodology of using the penalty function/finite element formulation was developed to solve the steady state Navior-Stokes equation.

The rheological data show that the CTBN-EPOXY resin is a non-Newtonion fluid at low shear rate. On the …

A Parameter Identification System For The Human Visual Evoked Response, Robert Kalle Michaels

Theses

The Human Visual Evoked Response (VER) provides a useful tool for analyzing an individual's visual system. However, mere inspection of the signal may not always be the best way to make a diagnosis of the patient. To aid in this diagnosis a parameter identification system has been developed which fits the response to an analog model. The development of the model was based on the results of a survey of previous work in the field. Data were acquired from a data acquisition/processing system developed at the New Jersey University of Medicine and Dentistry and the Eye Institute of New Jersey. …
