Simulation Of Aids Patient Detoxification By An Extracorporeal Device And Related Experimental Studies, Mansoor Yusuf Kapadvanjwala
Simulation Of Aids Patient Detoxification By An Extracorporeal Device And Related Experimental Studies, Mansoor Yusuf Kapadvanjwala
Theses
A simple numerical simulation of an AIDS patient detoxification by an extracorporeal device for the removal of virus has been designed. The mathematical model accounts for healthy white cells (W) attacking and destroying the virus (V), while at the same time the virus attacks and infects certain white cells. The infected white cells (Wi) serve as a site for viral growth, and finally the cell is lysed, releasing a large number of viruses in the blood stream. This model can be used to predict concentrations over a given period for the patient.
The device incorporates an antitwister mechanism …

The data was analyzed and time standards were set for the …
The Comparison Of Different Quality Of Working Life Among Countries From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jih-Ping Ouyang
The Comparison Of Different Quality Of Working Life Among Countries From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jih-Ping Ouyang
Theses
The objective of this study is to focus on the factors underlying the prosperity of Taiwan from a cross-cultural perspective by utilizing Hofstede's (1980) theory and England's (1983) theory. It presents the scores on Hofstede's four indices (Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Individualism and Masculinity), using it to compare with countries, and touches upon England's eleven work goals.
Through research and analysis comparisons of the differences and similarities between Taiwan (Republic of China) and the other countries are found and based on these, the modifications can be made to improve the current managerial pattern. For the past few years, there has …
A Word Based Data Compression Using Arithmetic Encoding, Christopher Dean Peckham
A Word Based Data Compression Using Arithmetic Encoding, Christopher Dean Peckham
Theses
It is usually difficult to compress data from a statistically unknown source and yield a good compression ratio. Using the fact that words are the fundamental basis of the written language, a data compression scheme based on words should yield high compression ratios. Discussed here is a compression scheme that gathers words from the source stream and places them in a dictionary, or word list, to use later in the coding, thereby becoming adaptive to the words in a given file without prior knowledge of the source. When a word is in the word dictionary, it is encoded by its …

Viscoelastic Damping Of Beams, Mansour Messalti
Viscoelastic Damping Of Beams, Mansour Messalti
Theses
The composite damping characteristics of a viscoelastic sandwich beam are investigated. The sandwich consists of an elastic central layer coated on both sides with a viscoelastic material and two outer layers made out of the same material as the central layer. The composite beam is investigated for damping effectiveness. As in the work of DiTaranto and Kerwin, and also Mead, the energy dissipation due to the vibratory motion of the system is assumed to take place due to the shear deformation of the viscoelastic layer only. The assumption that the outer layers do not stretch or contract during bending, further …
"Eggspressions", Eyda Jové
"Eggspressions", Eyda Jové
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to create an animation for entertainment utilizing the computer as opposed to traditional animation. I intend to use the computer as a tool to tell a visual story rather than performing visual tricks and techniques so often found in computer animation. The animation will tell a story in which the characters will have visual appeal in order to involve the viewer. It is also possible that I may integrate some video techniques. The Genigraphics computer systems will be used incorporating both the paintbox and animation system.

Schools have moved into a new technological realm with the advent of the modern microcomputer. The focus of this project was to investigate current trends in computer education in the elementary grades in respect to computer placement within the schools and content of computer education programs. The paper addresses, specifically, the lack of a computer program in the Warren County RIII School District and the rationale for developing a computer lab in the elementary school. An interim plan is also proposed, …
A Simple Solubility Theory Combining Solubility Parameter And Lewis Acid-Base Concepts, Lan Tuyet Evans
A Simple Solubility Theory Combining Solubility Parameter And Lewis Acid-Base Concepts, Lan Tuyet Evans
Theses
A simple model of liquid / liquid solubility has been developed. The existing solubility parameter theory which tries to explain solvent - salute interaction in terms of dispersion , polar , and hydrogen bonding interactions is discussed. The current theory has been widely used qualitatively but can not be used quantitatively due largely to incorrect modeling of the hydrogen bonding interactions. This research proposes modifications to the current solubility parameter theory that are designed to overcome the problems encountered with hydrogen bonding interactions in which the hydrogen bonding interactions are described as a special case of more general Lewis acid …
Extraction Methods For Iodine From Crude Oil Systems For The Determination Of 129i/127i Ratios, Sharon Tullai
Extraction Methods For Iodine From Crude Oil Systems For The Determination Of 129i/127i Ratios, Sharon Tullai
Theses
129I/127I ratios were investigated as a potential for dating and tracing studies of crude oil systems. 129I/127I ratios were measured using a tandem accelerator mass spectrometer located at the University of Rochester. Carrier-free methods for AgI preparation are discussed for formation waters, petroleum, and source and reservoir rocks. Formation water extractions include the use of oxidizing and reducing agents to extract iodine into carbon tetrachloride. Samples prepared in this way gave good ratio measurements with no contamination. Two methods for iodine extraction from petroleum are employed. The first is a sodium biphenyl extraction which will extract up to 90% of …
Estimation Of In-Situ Compression Index Of Contaminated Clays Using The Electrical Method, Prasanna Ratnaweera
Estimation Of In-Situ Compression Index Of Contaminated Clays Using The Electrical Method, Prasanna Ratnaweera
Theses
For contaminated clay soils, it has been found that current testing methods to determine compressibility characteristics do not truly identify the physico-chemiral interaction present in the soil-pore fluid-electrolyte system. Most methods are virtually impracticable due to various reasons such as evaporation of pore-fluid, difficulty of handling toxic chemicals, etc. Also, destructive test methods may not maintain in-situ conditions while testing.
The electrical properties of soils, the dielectric dispersion in particular is considered to represent the amount of physico-chemical interaction present in the soil-pore fluid-electrolyte system. For uncontaminated soils, correlations between the dielectric dispersion and the slope of the isotropic consolidation …
Color Theory As Applied To Typographic Letterforms, Mark Lewis
Color Theory As Applied To Typographic Letterforms, Mark Lewis
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate color theories through the use of typography while using the Pantone Color System as a guide. The examples used are not, nor were they intended to be, the best or only definition of a particular color theory. Rather, they represent one solution to a given problem. In this thesis I intended to illustrate color effects, (by combining color and typography,) that cannot be achieved through the use of colored shapes alone.
Dbprolog: A Prolog/Relational Database Interface, Diane Oagley
Dbprolog: A Prolog/Relational Database Interface, Diane Oagley
Theses
dbProlog is a prototype system that provides a C-Prolog user access to data in an external relational database via both loose and tight coupling. To the application programmer, dbProlog is a group of six built-in Prolog predicates that effect communication between a C-Prolog process and a database management system process. Prolog application program statements may be written using the six predicates to make the interface transparent to an end-user. The system is based on a "driver" process that must be customized to the interfaced DBMS and whose primary function is the translation of requests and replies between C-Prolog and the …
A Window-Oriented User-Interface For Image Processing Systems On Unix Based Workstations., Sandeep Mehta
A Window-Oriented User-Interface For Image Processing Systems On Unix Based Workstations., Sandeep Mehta
Theses
The advent of digital image processing has led to the availability of a very large number of software systems. However there is an absence of a cohesive general-purpose image processing environment isolated from hardware or the underlying operating system. The trend in computing in science and engineering, is towards distributed workstations, especially with the availability of high-performance microprocessors. Hence there is a need for a unified software environment on workstations for use in scientific applications. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a window oriented user-interface. The interface runs on top of a Image Processing system, running on workstations …

Utilization Of The Theory Of Constraints Approach For Improving A Manufacturing Enterprise Profitability : A Case Study, Yaron Chaut
Theses
The past two decades have been a difficult period for the U.S. as it lost its dominant position in one manufacturing industry after another to Japan. The American worker was initially blamed for this phenomenon - he was too expensive, was less productive, and produced lower quality products then the Japanese worker. The opening of factories in the U.S. managed by Japanese with American workers proved this claim to be wrong, as their products were competitive and often even better then the original Japanese products. It also indicated that the Japanese production planning and control methods are the primary reason …

A Methodology For Evaluating Prospective Investments In Flexible Automation, Werner A. Eikenbusch
A Methodology For Evaluating Prospective Investments In Flexible Automation, Werner A. Eikenbusch
Theses
The flexible automation of production systems (FA) provides the technology necessary for competitive success. However, the use of traditional budgeting methods has proved unsatisfactory when evaluating this type of investment, primarily because of the inadequate consideration being given to the resultant strategic benefits.
A methodology considered suitable for evaluating FA investments is proposed together with an illustrative application. To determine its industrial usefulness, manufacturing managers of North American and West German companies were surveyed both via interviews and via questionnaires. Their response confirms the merit of the procedure, despite the differences in competitive foci found between the American and the …
Effects Of Peripheral And Microwave-Core Heating On Survival In Hemorrhagic Shock In Rats, Ashraf Sabry El-Assuooty
Effects Of Peripheral And Microwave-Core Heating On Survival In Hemorrhagic Shock In Rats, Ashraf Sabry El-Assuooty
Theses
In a model of rats resuscitated from hemorrhagic shock, where 11 of 12 animals were alive up to 4 hours after shock, there was an average drop of 10°C in core body temperature. Survival and morbidity was much impaired when the shocked animals were externally heated with an infrared lamp to maintain a core body temperature of 35°C. Since the increased intrashock mortality is possibly due to the circulatory changes induced by peripheral heating, an attempt was made to determine the effects of heating the animal at its core. Twelve rats were shocked in the same fashion, however the body core …
Stepping Motor Control And Position Monitoring, Pei-Kuan Feng
Stepping Motor Control And Position Monitoring, Pei-Kuan Feng
Theses
Stepping motors provide precise digital control of speed, without speed detector feedback. A stepping motor can produce a large torque for a relatively small displacement, without a shaft-position sensor or special compensation. This provides accurate control of motor position. This thesis describes the development of stepping motor torque characteristics and the different approaches stepping motor phase current waveform detection. It is shown that one of the most useful indicators of rotor position is the initial rate of current rise. The Hybrid, Permanent-magnet and Variable-reluctance step motors have been applied in the drive circuits. The open-loop control circuits are implemented to …
The Tapered Dielectric Rod-Conical Antenna, Nicholas I. Georghiades
The Tapered Dielectric Rod-Conical Antenna, Nicholas I. Georghiades
Theses
The problem of the linearly tapered dielectric rod/conical antenna, excited by the HEI1 hybrid mode in a metallic circular waveguide , is rigorously studied. A theoretical model, and numerical investigation for the radiation characteristics of such an antenna are presented. The model is based on the combination of classical analysis of the Electromagnetic Fields within the dielectric rod, Local Mode Theory, and the Equivalence Principle for the determination of equivalent current distributions.
The far-zone radiation field is considered to be the summation of the fields produced by two radiative components in the dielectric rod/conical structure: The "aperture" of the uniform …
