Analysis Of The Performance Of The Pressurized-Water Nuclear Reactor By Electrical Simulation - Analog Computer, Philip Bartells Jul 1967

Analysis Of The Performance Of The Pressurized-Water Nuclear Reactor By Electrical Simulation - Analog Computer, Philip Bartells

Theses

This thesis demonstrates a method of analog simulation of a Pressurized-Water Reactor (PWR) using simplified techniques. The simulation is for the reactor vessel and is patterned after the "Yankee," the PWR owned and operated by the Yankee Atomic Electric Company of Rowe, Massachusetts, and built by the Westinghouse Corporation of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The entire analysis is based on the one group model (postulated that neutrons in the reactor are of one energy). The areas analyzed are: 1. Reactor kinetics - one delay group 2. Temperature effects on reactivity A. Fuel temperature coefficient B. Moderator and coolant temperature coefficient. 3. Control …

Heat And Mass Transfer In The Absence Of Air, James Joseph Howley Jun 1967

Heat And Mass Transfer In The Absence Of Air, James Joseph Howley

Theses

The effects of heat and mass transfer across a frosted heat exchanger operating in the absence of air was evaluated. It is felt that this work could be applied to processes such as desalination of water or the purification of materials by reverse sublimation.

The system consisted of a single 1/2” O.D. stainless steel tube mounted within a 3" O.D. plexiglas tube with the ends suitably flanged. A vacuum was maintained in the annular space. Refrigerated ethylene glycol passed through the inner tube in laminar flow. A series of runs with substantially air-free water vapor added to the annular space …

Open-Loop Frequency Response Analysis Of A Jacketed Kettle With Internal Heating/Cooling Coil, Wayne P. Brenckle Jun 1967

Open-Loop Frequency Response Analysis Of A Jacketed Kettle With Internal Heating/Cooling Coil, Wayne P. Brenckle

Theses

This work was performed to investigate the response and stability of a jacketed kettle with internal heating/cooling coils and glasteel thermowell. This system was first analyzed mathematically by deriving transfer functions for each component and then combining all component equations together to give the overall system transfer function. The mathematical model was then checked by frequency response analysis of the system. Bode plots of the system were prepared and the effect of the thermowell was analyzed.

Nyquist plots of the system were used as the criteria for determining stability, and obtaining the open-loop gain necessary to give optimum closed-loop response. …

Natural Gas Liquefaction, Travis George Hutchinson Jun 1967

Natural Gas Liquefaction, Travis George Hutchinson

Theses

In this thesis the author has developed a new process by which natural gas is converted into its liquid form. This has been accomplished by cryogenically cooling, condensing and fractionating natural gas. Resultant from this process is the design of natural gas liquefaction with valuable by-product recovery.

An Investigation Of Some Properties Of Liquids Near Their Freezing Points, Martin Irwin Pulver Jun 1967

An Investigation Of Some Properties Of Liquids Near Their Freezing Points, Martin Irwin Pulver

Theses

Five normal alcohols were prepared to greater than 99% purity. Simultaneous viscosity and density measurements were made beginning at 20°C above the reported normal freezing point and ending at incipient crystallization.

It was assumed that viscosity could be expressed as a function of specific volume and absolute volume, and that a simple logarithmic function would give a suitable correlation. The resulting equation yielded viscosities with an average error of less than 0.8% for the entire collection of data.

Deviations from a previously established linear function were observed in the density data from about 5°C above the reported normal freezing point …

Approximation Of Reaction Rate Models, Hsu-Tung Lee Jun 1967

Approximation Of Reaction Rate Models, Hsu-Tung Lee

Theses

In reaction rate studies, experimental data is interpreted and correlated in terms of various mathematical models. The converse of the modeling of practical problems is the task- of experimental determination of reaction mechanisms. Generally, this approach is classified into integral and differential methods. Both involve trial and error techniques. The mathematical model which satisfies the test becomes the equation for mechanistic representation.

Both the integral and differential methods have been tried. Generally speaking, the differential method is more advantageous than the integral. For one thing, the parameters which are involved in the nodal can be determined directly by the differential …

The Measurement Of Dispersion Coefficients, John Harold Rosenberger Jun 1967

The Measurement Of Dispersion Coefficients, John Harold Rosenberger

Theses

This work describes a method of determining axial dispersion coefficients in a packed bed chemical reactor. This is done by measurement of the fractional conversion of acetic anhydride to acetic acid, by first order reaction in dilute solution. The reaction is carried out at various flow rates in a four inch diameter reactor packed with one-half inch Raschig rings. analysis is by the aniline-rater method. Calculation of the dispersion coefficients is by trial using a digital computer. The results are presented graphically and compared to results obtained by other methods. The results of this study are found to correspond to …

Thermal Conductivity Of Mixtures, Paul Joseph Orosz Jun 1967

Thermal Conductivity Of Mixtures, Paul Joseph Orosz

Theses

A concentric cylinder type cell was designed and constructed tp measure thermal conductivity of liquids. The materials of construction were stainless steel and teflon, so that a wide variety of liquids could be tested.

The systems studied were aqueous solutions of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and tertiary-butyl alcohol. Thermal conductivity was studied as a function of composition.

The data obtained were fitted to quadratic equations by least squares analysis. For each system, an equation of the following type was obtained:

kL = A + BxA + CxA2

where kL is thermal …

Psychometric Evaluation Of Diazo Reproductions, John A. Kosta May 1967

Psychometric Evaluation Of Diazo Reproductions, John A. Kosta

Theses

An experiment was conducted to determine quality criteria for continuous-tone diazo film reproductions. The rank-order method was used to acquire judgement data from a group of experienced photographic scientists evaluating diazo reproductions varying in exposure level and tone reproduction contrast. Analysis of the data resulted in the conclusion that a high degree of agreement does exist between the judges, the quality of a diazo copy depends significantly on the exposure level and the silver positive input, and maximum density and tone reproduction contrast could be possible quality criteria for diazo reproductions.

The Use Of Ektacolor Paper As A Pre-Press Color Proof, Keith Erb, John Suter May 1967

The Use Of Ektacolor Paper As A Pre-Press Color Proof, Keith Erb, John Suter

Theses

To test the usefulness of Ektacolor Professional Paper as a pre-press color proofing method, one set of three predictor equations for each of the four primary printing inks was derived relating additive exposures on Ektacolor to colorimetric solid ink densities. These relationship would not yield to simultaneous solution.

Chromaticity coordinates of several sets of solid inks were matched on Ektacolor with an error of 2-10 MacAdam noticeability units. Probably because of the differences in surface characteristics of Ektacolor and newsprint, a visual match was not achieved.

An Estimation Of Accuracy For Star-Oriented Optical Fixes Of Artificial Earth Satellites Produced By Amateur Equipment, David Weishaupt May 1967

An Estimation Of Accuracy For Star-Oriented Optical Fixes Of Artificial Earth Satellites Produced By Amateur Equipment, David Weishaupt

Theses

The project's intent is to determine the accuracy of simple amateur equipment in producing optical fixes from a reference star background. A standard 4" x 5" Speed Graphic camera is used with a timing device consisting of a short wave radio and a tape recorder to record the time at exposure. The accuracy obtained from two out of four observations is within 1800 feet along the orbital path of the satellite.

Subjective Evaluation Of The Noticeable Density Differences In A Continuous Tone Photograph, Barry Buckser May 1967

Subjective Evaluation Of The Noticeable Density Differences In A Continuous Tone Photograph, Barry Buckser

Theses

Eighteen photographs of two subjects, printed on contrast grades numbers 1, 2, and 4, of Kodak Polycontrast paper and mounted on gray, white, and black mount boards were subjectively evaluated to determine the number of noticeable density differences the average observer can see. Objective measurements were made of the noticeable density differences. The noticeable density differences for a continuous tone print were in nine major groupings and four minor groupings. No significant difference was found between the number of densities found on prints of different contrast and different mounts. No significant difference was found between photo graphic orientated and non-photographic …

A Latent Image Distribution Study Of "Dry-Writing" Photo-Recording Materials, Joseph Geller May 1967

A Latent Image Distribution Study Of "Dry-Writing" Photo-Recording Materials, Joseph Geller

Theses

Improving silver halide emulsions used for the direct writing of oscillographic traces is a topic not discussed openly in the technical literature. It has been previously thought that good contrast between image and background depends upon the extreme low-intensity reciprocity law failure of these emulsions combined with their ability to be desensitized by low-intensity light. Evidence presented in this report indicates that low-intensity reciprocity law failure is very desirable for the surface image; however, for the internal image, the most practical* of the three materials tested reveals no reciprocity law failure within the time interval from IO*2 to 10*6 seconds …

Melt Rheological Properties Of A Filled Polyethylene, George Lewis Levy Jan 1967

Melt Rheological Properties Of A Filled Polyethylene, George Lewis Levy

Theses

A procedure was developed to convert shear stress at various melt temperatures into a computed shear stress at a constant temperature in an isothermal system.

The isothermal shear stress was first analyzed at an equilibrium condition before time induced stress reduction for

1) the temperature dependency of shear stress

2) non-newtonian flow behavior

3) a relationship between the independent variables of shear rate, filler concentration and temperature, and shear stress.

A statistical analysis was performed on the data to find an empirical relationship between shear stress and the independent variables, at any time, under stress, for unfilled and filled high …

Testing The Fisher-Foser Mark-I On-Easel Color Analyzer, C. Donald Fisher, Richard Foser Jan 1967

Testing The Fisher-Foser Mark-I On-Easel Color Analyzer, C. Donald Fisher, Richard Foser

Theses

It is proposed to test and statistically evaluate the performance of an on-easel color analyzer built by the authors. It is discovered during the testing program that the device is nonfunctional, and the testing program is re-directed toward finding the causes of the instrument mal-function. It is concluded that the particular characteristics of the cadmium sulfide cell employed, and the electronics of the device, introduce non-linearities which make readings non-repeatable. It is nevertheless felt that the concepts involved in the device, and in the testing program as originally envisioned, are sound, and that further development of the device would produce …

Ph Effects On Fluorescent Fatigue, Donald Miraco, John Pierce Jan 1967

Ph Effects On Fluorescent Fatigue, Donald Miraco, John Pierce

Theses

Fluorescent dyes tend to fatigue when exposed to short wavelength radiation. Since all work is not done at one pH level, it is necessary to know how a change in pH will effect the fluorescing characteristics of a dye. Of particular interest is the effect on fatigue as a function of time. The shift in spectral absorption with varying pH was established for fluorescein dye. Its increase in fluorescing intensity with increasing negative ion concentration was then measured. With increasing exposure time the pH's of 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 gave indications of fatiguing while the pH's of 2.0 and 4.0 …

The Determination Of A Set Of Alphanumeric Characters Of Equal Recognizability, Keith C. Donaldson, Harry O. Gough Jan 1967

The Determination Of A Set Of Alphanumeric Characters Of Equal Recognizability, Keith C. Donaldson, Harry O. Gough

Theses

An experiment is described whose objective was to determine a set of alphanumeric characters of equal recognizability. Constraints were that the characters be similar in aspect ratio to the conventional tri-bar target, i.e., 5:1, and that they and the surround have a low density difference. Such a set is described, together with the experimental technique and data analysis used by the present authors to evaluate the set. At an alpha risk of 0.10 the set of characters E S 2 3 8 9 was found to have equal recognizability under two varied viewing conditions.

Post Exposure Latensification Of A Multilayer Color Film, Thomas A. Tietjen Jan 1967

Post Exposure Latensification Of A Multilayer Color Film, Thomas A. Tietjen

Theses

A uniform secondary exposure of low intensity is made to a normal or underexposed primary latent image for approximately 5-15 minutes, to increase the effective speed index. This is first studied from a white light approach similar to that used in single emulsion negative materials.

In addition, the ability to manipulate and align individual layers by selective filtering was also studied. Red, green and blue filters, matched closely to the spectral sensitivity of each layer, were used separately and conjunctively towards achievement of the desired levels of effective speed, contrast, color balance and maximum density.

Latensification by a secondary white …

Fugacity And Activity Coefficients For The N-Butane-Nitrogen System, Richard E. Walter Jun 1966

Fugacity And Activity Coefficients For The N-Butane-Nitrogen System, Richard E. Walter

Theses

Fugacity and activity coefficients were calculated for the nitrogen-n-butane system at 310°, 340°, 370°, and 400°F. in 100 atmosphere pressure intervals from 100 to 700 atmospheres for the pure components and mixtures of 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 mol% n-butane. Calculations were based on a method proposed by Van Ness. This calculation procedure combines an analytical solution utilizing the Redlich and Kwong equation of state with a graphically obtained correction factor.
