The Introduction, Demonstration And Evaluation Of A New Typeface Identification System, J. Ames Parsons Jan 1989

The Introduction, Demonstration And Evaluation Of A New Typeface Identification System, J. Ames Parsons

Theses

Graphic communicators, including typographers, designers, and descriptive bibliographers, are often called upon to identify typefaces. Since there are thousands of typefaces available in the marketplace today, it is unlikely that any one designer, typographer or bibliographer can name them all at sight. Accordingly, there is a need tfor a typeface identification system. The purpose of this paper is to introduce, demonstrate and evaluate such a system. An identification system called TYPE-ID was developed and tested. Two principles -- the "pass option" and the "null digit" -- were introduced. A sequence of questions was written for a number of different characters. …

Theses

This paper will focus on a study of a Computer-Based Sales Information System as it would primarily apply to firms selling in industrial markets.

Over the past several years theorists have debated the issue of computers . Some theorists believe that computers enhance our work environment while others believe that computers eliminate jobs and create resentment. The first group supports the theory that computers aid our work environment and make our jobs more productive. The second group supports the theory that computers disrupt the work environment and cause inefficiencies through costly unproductive training of skills that are not job-related.

The Application Of Neural Networks To Character Recognition Based On Primitive Feature Detection, Michael Pistacchio Jan 1989

The Application Of Neural Networks To Character Recognition Based On Primitive Feature Detection, Michael Pistacchio

Theses

This thesis investigates a character recognition method inspired by the premise that humans recognize shapes using their ability to assimilate a set of primitive features. These features collectively create a higher level shape of a certain category. The primitive features employed in our method include horizontal, vertical, diagonal lines, and corners of various orientations positioned at various places within a character. Combinations of these features form categories of characters to be recognized. The basic approach consists of preprocessing a character bitmap, extracting primitive features to form a feature vector. The feature vector is then input to a classification neural net. …

A Sql Front-End Semantic Data Model, Marc Richard Lodico Jan 1989

SQLSDM is a "front end" semantic data model to a SQL relational database management system (RDBMS). SQLSDM provides a more semantically complete RDBMS through the implementation of a Domain and Relational Integrity scheme. SQLSDM provides integrity definition functions and a sub-system to interpret SQL commands . Integrity system tables are created through the use of SQLSDM ' s domain definition command and SQL ' s "CREATE TABLE" command. As SQL database update commands are interpreted, SQLSDM uses these integrity tables to enforce domain and referential integrity. SQLSDM operates virtually transparent to the user and provides for greater database consistency and …

A Computer Implementation Of An Orthonormal Expansion Method For Digital Image Noise Suppression, Hui-Jung Lee Jan 1989

A Computer Implementation Of An Orthonormal Expansion Method For Digital Image Noise Suppression, Hui-Jung Lee

Theses

Images are usually corrupted by noise which comes from various sources: noise in the recording media (e.g. film grain noise), and noise introduced in the transmission channel. Noise degrades the visual quality of images and obscures the detail information in the images. One of the major sources of noise for images recorded on films is film grain noise. An orthonormal expansion algorithm for digital image noise suppression is implemented. The objective is to preserve as much sharpness and produce as few artifacts in the processed image as possible. The method sections an image into non-overlapping blocks. Each block is treated …

An Anamorphic Imaging Model To Correct Geometric Distortion In Planar Holographic Stereograms, Michael Darwin Rainsdon Jan 1989

An Anamorphic Imaging Model To Correct Geometric Distortion In Planar Holographic Stereograms, Michael Darwin Rainsdon

Theses

This thesis demonstrates the importance of an accurate imaging model for making holographic stereograms by evaluating the geometric perspective distortion that is seen in flat holographic stereograms made using a circularly symmetric imaging model. A correct anamorphic imaging model for flat holographic stereograms is discussed and the limitations of the new model are explored. An implementation of the anamorphic imaging model as a computer system for creating geometric distortion-free holographic stereograms IS described. Holographic stereograms were made using the computer system. A comparison is made of the uncorrected and corrected holographic stereograms. From viewing these holographic stereograms it is apparent …

Situation Analysis And Promotion Plan For Cushman Interiors, Caroline Mclver Pendleton-Hillmar

Theses

The quality, price and availability of a product (or company) are only important to consumers if they have a need for that product and if they are aware that the product exists. Advertising and promotion make the consumer aware that something is offered to them. Without consumer awareness nothing is sold.

In order to effectively create consumer awareness, an advertiser must know the mood of the buying public, the competitors, and the industry. Through organized gathering of information advertising and promotion may be developed so that consumers may be reached, advertising created, and products sold. This is true of any …

Apocalypse And Fortune - Digest, Lila M. Held Jan 1989

Apocalypse And Fortune - Digest, Lila M. Held

Theses

The premise upon which this study is based is that German Expressionist art has undergone an expansion in marketability, and aesthetic recognition during the past decade. German Expressionism is defined as an art of protest, an art that expressed its fundamental precepts visually through distortion, brutal images, and the emotive use of color and form.

I chose to use Ludwig Meidner to exemplify the characteristics of the movement. The basic tenets of Expressionism are apparent in both Meidner's visual and literary endeavors. Ten years ago, this artist's name and work were obscure. Today, his art appears in galleries, his name …
